Got Thinning Hair? Here'S When It'S Time For A Hair Topper!

This ASK ME question comes from Carolyn, and she wants to know when the right time is to start wearing a hair topper as a solution to her thinning hair.

Got a question? Head on over to my blog (https://cornerofhopeandmane.com/) to shoot me a note, or leave me a question in the comments.

I think it's NEVER too early for women to start thinking about a hair topper, especially if you are seeing your thinning hair become more and more sparse. The more information you have before you make the leap (and the more experimentation you do), the better!

I'm wearing Top Secret by Jon Renau, video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxBINd...

Hey Lauren here from corner token Maine - and this is the first installment of ask me so going forward. I am going to be taking blog reader and YouTube questions and turning that into a little video series. So today's question comes from many women, but most recently from a blog reader named Carolyn, and she asks when, when do you know when it's time to wear a topper and then she actually has a follow-up question? When do you know once you start wearing a topper when it's time to wear a wig, so I'm gon na answer that in two parts right now, I'm going to talk about the topper, I'm gon na do a second video about the wig just to keep things Separate so if you have a question, feel free to hop on over, to my blog shoot me an email or leave a comment below, and I will get to those questions at some point in just askin a series, but so first off the topper thing is really Really personal, as you guys can probably imagine, I can only tell you what it was like for me, so I was concealing for several years before I decided to move into wearing toppers, I feel like it has started to rain and there's a drop on my glasses. I don't know if you guys can see it. I'M gon na ignore it anyways. So I was concealing for a long long time and technically, even now I probably could get away with concealing. I was using a spray-on concealer and also loving my boost in blend hair, fibers I'll link to both of those below or to the post that I did on those. I can probably still do that to this day. My problem was twofold, and maybe this is what you are experiencing as well, that led you to that question Carolyn, but so one it was taking me longer and longer to get the concealers to look right because, as my hair loss progressed, obviously it took more more Time more skilled to get that spray in those fibers exactly where I wanted them and hindsight is always 20/20. So, looking back now that I wear hair, I realize how much time I was spending on concealing my own bio, hair and wearing hair. Now is such a time saver, I didn't realize it at the time, but I remember feeling kind of frustrated that I was putting all this work into my hair blow-drying a putting the volumizing products on concealing it. You know it was just taking way too long for what the finished result was. So that's that's one of the reasons why I really wanted to segue into wearing a topper. The second reason - and this was a big one for me - so my hair - it probably would have benefited from a cut, but I like to wear my hair. A little bit longer still do, but it was very limp, very fine, very straggly. So while I could get the top to look pretty good with concealers, I couldn't wear my hair down. I can try to put some curl or some wave into it, but it didn't really hold that too. Well. So the second that all of that volume that I artificially added in the mornings as soon as that fell - and I lived in South Florida at the Times the second I walked out come outside to my car in the humidity it did fall. You know everything looked fine up top, but then my hair was just stick straight and just kind of yuck on the bottom. So because of that, I had to wear ponytails a lot of time, a lot of the time which was fine. So again I had everything. Nice and concealed everything looked good up here, but my ponytail literally was tiny. It was, I refer to it as like a toddler's pigtail, that's how little hair I had so my ponytail was just so wimpy and silly I mean it looked fine. Looking back, I see pictures, it looked fine, but you know it just it just wasn't fun. You know. Hair hair has never really been like fun for me, because my hair was never really great. I know a lot of women had really great hair before hair loss picked in and that's a big thing for them. So while I understand that I've never lived that, but you know just dealing with the concealing every day and then still having a lackluster result, especially when you compare it to my ends, I thought that there has to be a better way. So that's really when I started to look into toppers and I'm really glad that I did because now I'm saving time I'm saving money before I was getting my hair cut and highlighted regularly for again results that weren't super. You know. But now I just get a piece or two a year and everything seems to last about that long. So there is a little bit of caustic things there as well, but the big thing is really the time and I know no matter what the weather. You know. My hair is gon na look okay, I decided to wear it down back in the day if it rained or anything. Not only would I have to worry about. My concealer is kind of running. I didn't really run into that problem, but I was always checking just to make sure, but you, the bottom, the hair in your bottom would fall and it was frizz that would be limping. You know it just wasn't an overall good book, so you don't really have that problem with toppers. So those are only the two main reasons why I officially started to leap and to look into wearing toppers. So that might be those might be two considerations Carolyn and everyone else out there for you to think about this. Well, like I said it's very personal, some people have other reasons. I'M sure there are big ones out there that I didn't mention that occurrences, some others, maybe not to me, but those were my two so any questions on kind of my thought process, as I was going through this. drivewayfiends: This has been so helpful. I also suffer from androgenetic alopecia and I'm just about to the point where I'm going to buy a topper. I'm so tired of the fibers (and the messy bathroom that goes along with using them). Thank you so so much for what you do!

April Vernon Liversage: Thank you for this video, I was literally wondering if it was time to think about wearing a topper when I came across your video and it was exactly what I needed to hear. I have been wear hair fibres for years and I have kind of grown used to the gradual loss. I went for a hair extension consultation today and realised It’s just such hard work to get the top of my hair to look acceptable to wear down (I wouldn’t dream of leaving the house with it down without extensions and loads of hair fibres). So realisation is it’s not the underneath of my hair that needs help I need to accept it’s the top. So thank you for giving me the courage and wake up call that it’s time ☺️ and I’m looking forward to not leaving a dark hair fibres trail on ever surface my hair meets throughout the day. Thank you xx

TippyT Lawton: Thank you for your advice, i have the same kind of hair loss and am looking at my first topper. This was so helpful x

Danika: Hello! I just found your blog/channel and am so grateful! I just bought my first topper Saturday (it's due in Wednesday) and I had so many emotions trying it on. I have two questions for you: Do you have any advice for a first timer to not feel like "hey, I'm wearing fake hair now, everyone will notice and think I look ridiculous?" Also, what brand are your glasses? I'm in the market for a new pair and love yours!

Lani C: Thank you for sharing. I just started wearing toppers 3 months ago and it has made such a difference in my life.

Nicole A: I am so happy I came across your blog. I have learned so much from you, so thank you!! My question is about bonded toppers. Have you ever considered one? I'm not sure if I want to go straight to that as all toppers I have tried on, I have been able to see the transition from my hair to the lace/monofiliment.

some one: Wouldn't putting products on your hair like concealers and fibers prevent new hair growth and potentially worsen your hair loss anyway?

Roseanne King: Do you ever sleep in your toppers? How long can you wear a topper without taking it out?

Chey Song: I am unsure I am even ready for a topper. They are also very expensive... I have thinning hair on top but can still use fibers or coloring of the scalp (Henna Tattoo works with right colors and reapplication every so often..) but the hairline is my worst area as far as knowing how to make it look natural. Trying to work with the sparse hairs that grown down past the hairline etc, is a headache and I end up with clumps of fibers or scalp color there that looks unnatural. Is there any way to trim or pluck there to make it look more natural? or anything I can do there to fill it in better?

dony pi: Do you say openly that you are wearing a topper when people ask? How do you explain to your kids that you take on/off your hair?when I tried to wear a topper I felt fake...because I felt like I was hiding myself to others and I was also really imbarassed when people asked me about my hair or when someone simply looked my hair...another main problem is to find the right size and a matching color...thanks for sharing your story

Virginia W: Ty, helpful to me ❤️

Chaan K: Sadly I’m allergic to hair concealers like toppik etc

doglvr69: I am ready to start wearing a topper also. But I am 65, have very short hair and it is gray in front and goes darker as you go down my head (natural). I have been fighting a type of cancer for the last 13 years that is treatable, but not curable, so I take lots of medications that make my hair thinning even worse. It looks difficult to start wearing a short hair topper and make it look natural. Is it harder, in your opinion. I am also afraid of going straight into a longer hair topper for fear everyone will know what is going on with my hair. My hair is short, mainly because of the thinning hair. My hairdresser thinks in order for my hair to be bouncy and not dragged down, it should be short and would cover my scalp better. I use the spray on fiber when I go out. Where should I start?

maya lee: Did you buy your topper from USA? What i mean is . Is it made in the USA? I've order one topper and didn't bother to question, when i got it .it was from China and the hair was freezie, crusted like hair was all burn, and when I try to call them,no answer, email them, they said that's real human hair...paid alot of money for it..not happy at all,so now I'm kind of scared to buy it again....

Janet M: I purchased my first topper 3 months ago. How can I get the top to not look wiggy. I normally don’t wear a part but tried to pluck the hair to make one. When I put it on I don’t see the part. I bought the easipart xl. It has some curve to the base and I am thinking that makes the part go away because it doesn’t lay flat. Any suggestions to putting a part that makes it makes believable.

HWMOLiberty: Where did you buy it?

boo boo: Have you used Rogaine?

My Makeup Tackle Box: How can I order Jon Renau top secret?

Cathy's Creation and vlog: Great video ,what hair are you wearing in this video?

Debra Frakes: Alllllll this talking and you didn't show your topper!

Teresa Lockwood: Corner of Hope and Mane, you must be out of business, all your YouTube posts are 3-4 years ago. I wrote you a couple of messages and I pm you, but no answers. Anyway just wanted to air my frustrations. If you ever do see this and you want to answer it, I’m looking for a Top Full 18’ Jon renau, some sort of golden brown. Anyone that reads this and would like to help me please do. I want synthetic also. Thanks again. Teresa
