Hey my lovelies welcome and welcome back to my channel, where i break down the fundamentals of my hair care. So if you're new to this channel guys, my name is dina and over here we talk about everything, relaxed hair care. If that's something that you're interested in, please do by all means consider subscribing to this channel and yeah: let's get right into today's video, so guys. Today'S video is all about identifying whether or not air drying is for you or whether heat drying is for you. Now. I know in the relaxed hair care community or in the hair care community on a hole when it comes to heat drying. Your hair, it's like a big no-no. You can never be on a healthy, relaxed hair journey if you are consistently heat drying your hair, but today i wanted to explore a little bit. You know, let's delve into the pros and the cons of both forms of drying, your hair, so that you can then determine which is better for you now. For me, i have my preferences, but i probably won't share them in this video. But you'll probably hear me talk about them, as i explain the pros and cons of each so yes, let's start off with air drying, because air drying is supposed to be the safest of them all. So, let's get right into it. Let me just get comfortable here. Get my foot in the right place? Okay, so what is air drying right? So air drying is pretty much the process by which we allow the natural elements to dry our hair. We do not add any heat. We wash our hair, we put in our leave-ins and we just allow our hair to just do whatever it's doing on its own right. There'S some persons who would at times utilize a blow dryer on cool settings, but i don't necessarily see that as air drying. That'S you utilizing a blow dryer and using cool air. For me, i it's it's. It'S still utilizing something else other than the natural elements that air dry, your hair. So i don't see blow drying on cool ear as air drying. Now, why do we air dry, our hair? Now, if you're on your healthy relaxed hair journey, it is preached, it is thrown in your face that heat is bad and as much as possible. We should be avoiding heat if we want healthy here now. In terms of the pros of air drying, so it's supposed to be less damaging on your hair, mainly because we know that heat tends to sometimes dry out. Your hair dry hair leads to brittleness. Brittleness leads to breakage, so air drying is supposed to be a safer alternative to drying your hair. For some persons, air drying has really led to thicker hair, and i i wouldn't necessarily say that your hair gets thicker because of air drying, but because all of the texture comes out during air drying, i suppose it appears as though your hair looks thicker, because the Curl patterns are more evident. You know your hair is not as sleek and smooth as when you would blow dry or you know, roll a set. Your hair air drying as well in my opinion, leads to less manipulation. So if you know anything about me and my channel um, i'm go easy all right, i'm go easy. I don't like to do too much work on wash day, so the less manipulation for me, the better. So when you air dry, your hair, you wash you apply your leave-ins and that's it. You allow your hair to just dry. So whenever you're manipulating your hair less, it means less breakage as well right. Well, we think we think it means less breakage, but i think in essence, air drying sometimes really shows us the true state or the true health of our hair, and sometimes we don't like that truth. We we don't like that truth. It doesn't take long, it doesn't take long and when i say it doesn't take long, i don't mean the whole air drying um process, but i mean having to just get the shower put on your leave-ins and go about your business. I am cool with that, as opposed to standing up in front of a mirror with a blow dryer and a comb in my hand or as opposed to roller setting and getting all that work. But now that we've explained some of the pros of air in your hair. Let'S talk about some of the cons. Let me preface this by saying: air drying is not for everyone. Air drying will not be for everyone. Air drying does not work for everyone. Now i'm a personal testimony girl to when i started my hair journey a while back. I could not air dry to save my life. It was the worst thing out there. It took me years and when i say years i watched so many youtube videos on how to edge right here and no matter what i did. My hair never came out like how these persons came out, and i wondered, is air drying really for me. It wasn't until about four years ago that i learnt my hair and learned what products i should use for air drying, but let's get into the cons of air drying, and these are cons from my experience. Whenever you have different textures in your hair, air drying can sometimes just throw your whole hair journey out of the window. You know what i mean, because the textures are so prominent that it makes it very difficult to style your hair. So that's one of the cons. The textures, your fourth, we love the textures, it makes our hair look thicker, but at the same time it makes it very difficult to style if you are not a drying properly guys. The dryness and the brittleness can lead to severe breakage, and i know that is one of the big cons or big reasons as to why a lot of persons do not like air drying their hair. They feel as though all of the moisture is taken out of their hair. Now the major difference between air drying, your hair and heat drying, your hair is that when it comes to edge right here, it takes a lot more moisture. Remember when you're applying products to your hair and you you're about to blow dry your hair, the heat basically seals in the moisture into your hair right, but because you're air drying, what happens you're putting on water-based products? And what does water do water evaporates? So, as your hair continues to dry, you will notice that your hair becomes drier. So generally, what i would typically do is i apply. My leave-ins apply, my serum, let my hair dry and then i would follow up with my moisturizer and oil and seal now. I have a detailed video on how i air dry, my hair. You can go and check that out. I think it's very useful provides you with a host of tips on how i would have conquered air drying. You know so please go and check that out now. Not only is your hair difficult to style and your hair feels um dry, but it's difficult to get a comb through your hair. Whenever i air dry, my hair guys, i do not use combs combs - are like a big no-no because, because of all the textures, it makes no sense to try and put a comb through your hair, it's just going to lead to breakage. I also find that throughout the week i tend to add a little bit more product to my hair, as opposed to when i would heat dry, my hair. For some reason, the moisture stays locked in a lot longer when i'm heat drying as opposed to air drying. But yes, all in all air drying is not for everyone, as i would have said, but it's up to you if you conquered it like, i have you realize that it gets easier and easier, but anyways, let's go on to heat drying, your hair generally, when we Speak about heat drying all here, we're looking at two main ways that we can heat dry. Our hair, maybe underneath a hooded dryer. Whether it is that your hair will just lay down straight is wrapped or you have in some curlers or you are looking at possibly blow drying your hair. So those are the two main ways that i see that we can heat dry, our hair. Now, what are some of the advantages of using these methods to dry your hair, the first one being eliminates all the texture, so your hair becomes pretty much all one texture or as close to one texture as possible, and because of that, it makes it easier for You to manage and comb and style your hair, so that's always a plus. For me, i feel more confident when my hair is blow dried or roller set to wear my hair down like if my hair is air dry. I want to wear my hair down. You know all the textures, it doesn't look sleek, it doesn't look smooth, you know, and some of us like that silky look. You know so we love to then go over with like a nice flat iron after you've blow-dried your hair, to just make it look nice and there's nothing wrong with that. Absolutely nothing wrong once you're doing it properly and it's not causing more damage to your hair than good. It'S okay, some persons as well actually prefer to wear low, manipulative hairstyles or protective hairstyles when their hair is blown out or when their hair is in a straight estate. So the braids the twist outs, the bantu knots these tend to have a different look. Whenever your hair is blow dried compared to when your hair is air dried in one of my previous videos, i got this really sweet email from one of you guys asking to show how i achieved this. Look here, yeah how i achieved this look here in in in a previous video, and i was like, oh my gosh. How did i get this? When did i get this and it was actually when my hair was at a straightest, so i had just come from the hair salon. I think it was like over a week and i decided to do a twist out and that's how it came out. I'M gon na insert another picture or another video just to show you how that seam twister came out on air, dried hair, totally different, a totally different look, so you know it really adds another dimension of blow-dried. Hair really adds another dimension to your hair styles. I want to say as well that when persons blow-dry or straighten their hair, it makes it more easy for you to stretch your relaxers as opposed to dealing with the new growth and the straight ends in order to manage the the relaxer stretch a little bit more. Some persons recommend that you blow dry your hair to make it easier for you to deal with, and i think that's a good approach as well as long as, of course, you're utilizing your heat, protectants and you're not being too harsh and abrasive with your hair. Maybe sometimes we don't need to go on high heat to blow dry, our hair. We can just use medium to low heat and that would work just as well all right. So let's look at the cons now of heat drying you're here. So my first con guys is the manipulation and i'm gon na tell you straight up when i first started my hair journey, i used to be roller setting my hair every wash day every wash day. I was in my mirror, coleman with my fine-tooth comb to make sure that my hair rests well on my rollers took them out, and my hair was gorgeous honey body bounce shine everything now i stopped doing it one because my hair became longer and it just became Just an even longer process, detangling became much of a challenge for me and two. If you know about my channel, you know the back of my hair is like a completely different texture. So what i realized is that utilizing a small tooth comb at the back of my hair resulted in a lot of breakage. So i had to just stop and do what's best for my hair and stop utilizing rollers on my hair. But i absolutely love to see a good roller set. It looks really nice healthy bouncy. I absolutely love it, but at this stage i don't think it's for me, regardless of if you are roller, setting your hair or blow drying a flat iron, your hair. It takes time compared to when you're air drying your hair. Of course, i can easily spend about 30 to 35 minutes blow drying flat, ironing or roller setting my hair and not to mention the roller setting bit when you're sitting underneath a hooded dryer for about an hour time consuming much now utilizing heat. As i stated at the very beginning, utilizing heat can sometimes dry out your hair, so it's very important that whenever you're doing heat styling at all, no matter the the method that you choose, you must put on some heat protectant to protect your hair, because we do Not want your hair to dry out, we do not want your hair to break and heat tends to do that. It absorbs moisture from your hair. So, if we're looking at both methods of drying, our hair altogether air drying versus heat drying, let me know down in the comments which one you prefer: no i've gone a year with just blow drying my hair and i've gone a year with just air drying. My hair and i'm telling you one one, resulted in my hair becoming extremely extremely extremely thin and damaged right, so i just wanted to share with you the pros and the cons of each. I know some of you may have had different experiences with both forms of drying. Your hair, let me know down in the comments which one you prefer, but let me just end this by saying where you start is not where you're going to finish so a lot of us here on our hair journeys. We may feel that air drying, you know, does it work for us, but, as i said it took me years, it took me years to get to the stage where i'm at right now with my edge right here and i feel like air drying - has a lot. Not only to do with your technique, but your products, the products that you use when you're air drying your hair are essential, a very, very, very essential, but at the same time, if you do love to style your hair with heat and your hair is not being Adversely affected by all means continue. These are two techniques that we can utilize whenever we feel like, depending on our mood depending on you know, on what time um frame that we're working with choose, whichever works for you, so that's it for today's video guys, of course, if you haven't already hit the Subscribe button like this video share, this video with a friend also turn on your post notifications like why don't you want to be updated every time i post, you know i post every sunday at 3 o'clock, my time so um get notified. chocolat3babe: Wow, you’ve really been touching on some relatable topics lately. When I embarked on my healthy hair journey, I started air drying because it was touted as the healthiest way to dry your hair. But that along with some other practices that are supposed to be healthy (stretching, deep conditioning for an extended amount of time etc.), actually slowly damaged my hair. I recently decided to go back to the things I used to do when my hair was at its best and my hair is doing great. I started washing every 2 weeks instead of once a week, I tension blow dry each time I wash, I only deep condition for the recommended time on the product label and I no longer stretch relaxers past a certain time and I just keep it simple overall and I’m really seeing the results. I’ve stopped doing what these healthy hair gurus are doing and after years of multiple setback and recovery cycles, I have learned to do what works for my hair. My hair exhibits properties of high porosity and therefore using heat (tension blow dry or flat iron on moderate heat) smooths my cuticles and I can retain moisture better. I’ve found the only benefit to air drying for me is that my hair appears thicker but I achieve the same volume by blow drying on the warm setting and my hair comes out looking shinier and just healthier overall.

Sapphire Relaxed Hair: I used to heat dry 5 years ago. It got thin so I started air drying and My hair Loves it it takes an 1 in half to dry but it's ok Because I've always set time for my hair I call it a hair date so I'm really committed to my hair on my wash days or whenever I do a pre pool I'm very committed to this routine.. So it's air drying for me all the way :) thank you kindly God-bless you

Fiona J: Great video as usual Dena....the struggles of air drying has really been real for me. The first month post relaxer when I have more or less one texture....I air dry. After that I blow dry on low heat in months 2 & 3. If I stretch my relaxer to 4 months, I air dry and then flat iron to avoid double heat, and styling is still kinda manageable. This is where I am now and I can barely wait to get my next relaxer. Bottom line, you are right on point....your products have a lot to do with your results. Hope u had a great Easter girl...

Crystalin Daniel: Come on Preach on......this information is needed in the relax hair community.... you really have to search for what products work for you, your hair type to see really if you want to air dry or heat dry because they both have its pros and cons..... keep up the goood work....i really enjoyed you speak truth here...

HrhSophia TheFirst: I heat dry every two weeks with a roller set under a hooded dryer. I have also air dried, seldom but it happens. However I also have the rollers in when I air dry. This works for me.

Shayla❤: I would say air dry. I use to blow dry my hair but noticed i was losing so much hair. Now that I air dry and detangle my hair I lose only about 10 hairs or at most no more than 20 hairs.

ChristyJane: Love your content! You're always so relatable!

0tismadaline: Having products that works for your hair during the air drying process do helps and am currently air drying more due to my heat damage salon experience but in all airdry works for me. Great sharing dear ❤

Candice Van louw: I prefer air-dry.. I only use heat to see my length and that's every 3 month.. And iam from south Africa and love your videos u had me hooked on your braid out style.. And your topic is relevant and down to the rooth. CAnDi from capeTown

Rhonda Denis: I’m natural and heat drying is always the way to go. Period.

Manning Viral Media: Your hair looks great, but I am really liking your make up. Maybe a tutorial in the future? Great content, thank you.

Sacha Bloom: Subscribed! Notifications on! Idk why I wasn't following you from this channel. I know I subscribed from my personal account. Annnyway, you look great! Your hair is goals
