How To: Cut Hair Extensions To Blend With Short Blunt Hair (By Yourself!) | Diy 2021

I'm a real hairdresser and today I am showing you how to blend your hair extensions into your real hair, at home! This is a full detailed demonstration that will work for any type of hair extension (tape ins, fusions, sew-ins & even clip ins). I'll be showing you a few different ways to blend your hair with shears (if you don't have actual shears, you can also use regular scissors- you will be fine) and for a few techniques we will use texturizing/thinning shears (these are optional). The hair extensions I am wearing are from Full Shine on Amazon- they are the 22" tape ins- I am wearing two full packs. Links to all tools/products will be below- none of them are sponsored. Welcome back to my bathroom, my name is brittany. I'M a real hairdresser, and today i'm going to show you a few different techniques to blend your short hair. With your long extensions on yourself by yourself before, we start hacking away make sure that you subscribe and like i'm here for you every single week twice a week on wednesdays and sundays, i'm going to show you how i blend my hair extensions on myself. But i do want to note that hair cutting is very similar to religion. We all have the same common goal and there's a thousand different ways to get there. Not one of them is right, not one of them is wrong. Not one of them is better, not one of them is worse. This is just what i use on myself, so you may take bits and pieces of this and blend them together, or you may find that none of these work for you, you will need some sort of scissor or sheer for this, i'm using a really inexpensive pair Under ten dollars on amazon, i'll put the link in the description box below. If you want to grab some, you can absolutely use a crafting or regular scissor, because these are just hair extensions, but it does work a little bit better if you have an actual sheer. Let'S get started so the first thing i'm going to do is cut my basic shape or my length. I want to even up these ends, so i've separated it into two big sections with a straight down the middle back part, and i'm just going to group this together and i'm going to cut straight across to get rid of these straggly ends. And i'm going to be cutting it against my body. It is very tempting, especially if yours are really long to over direct it and cut it where you can see. That is a big no-no, because that is going to actually change the haircut and give you a graduated layer, not very good, because if you're not aware when you cut hair extensions, they're, not very forgiving and they show every single line you make so be careful. So cut against your skin, how you're going to do that is by using a mirror now we're going to match the other side. Okay and of course, i cut the cord to that. Microphone still works, we're good to go folks. Now i'm going to take these and check for balance just closing my eyes and making sure that they feel even feel even enough to me so now that we've got a basic shape, we're going to go through and blend this piece into this. These are these back corners here you see this and if your hair extensions are done properly, you should have these two little corners, because you can't put a hair extension there to cover it or you'd, be able to see the weft so you're always going to have This natural hair hanging out on these two back corners. You can't really blend these without actually cutting these, and this is your real hair. So if you have an issue with that, go ahead and skip this step, but for me i wear hair extensions pretty much every day of the year, so i don't really mind what my real hair looks like and we're not cutting much off. I'M going to show you two different techniques, a different one, on each side on how to blend this corner piece into this long piece. So all you do is take these back corners here and then clip your hair extension back. You don't want to get confused and overwhelmed so go ahead and put that in a pony, yeehaw technique. Number one is very similar to slide cutting. So what we're going to be doing is taking our scissor or shear, opening them up and using the belly. This is the belly this piece right here, so this is my hair. This is my shear, i'm still focusing on the belly and i'm going to take it with my thumb and take this corner starting about mid shaft. You don't want to start at the root because you're going to have really short hair and it's going to start sticking up on you. Looking real strange. Don'T do that! Okay, start at the bottom or the mid shaft, i'm going to start in the mid shaft. Here we go cranking cranking, cranking cranking, there's not a whole lot of hair coming off easy, easy, easy, easy, easy and repeat: it is better to do this in very small steps versus yeehaw just go to town on it. Please do not do that. We cannot put this back well, we can put this back, but it's just easier to do it right the first time, so here we go again taking it cranking it in a sliding motion, we're only taking off a very little little bit of hair. I'M going to do it one more time, so it's not a huge difference, but you can see how it's less blunt versus the other side. It kind of shaved off a little bit of that corner to make it blend. Now i'm going to take this and you can't over direct that that's fine and i'm going to point cut this. That means i'm working with a very tippy top of the shear or scissor, and i'm going up up up up straight up and down you're, not going diagonal. That'S going to remove too much weight, we're just trying to feather so up up up up up just on the ends. Here we go ready now for the other side, we're going to be using a different kind of tool. These are called thinning, shears or texturizing shears, depending on who you're talking to, but they have teeth on one side and a straight blade on the other. What happens when you place the hair in here and clamp down? It'S removing every other hair. If you will, you slide it down and it thins out the hair while also blending it. You can take this horizontal and hack at it. However, i prefer to always do mine vertical that will eliminate any kind of harsh lines that this straight blade is going to make. So i'm going to take this comb, it vertical and same kind of technique, i'm starting in the mid shaft and i'm going to one two: three pull it out and it's removing every other hair and you can see how much it softened the ends. Now, let's take this down and see how it looks i can see here on this side. I'Ve got a little bit, so i'm going to go through my thinning shears, and a lot of that too, is that golden color. I need to correct the color a little bit there and that will help that's much better. Now we need to go through and do some face framing layers, because you can obviously see here. This is where my real hair stops that do have like kind of a mullet with my real hair and then a drop off of weight. That is an obvious sign to outside people that this is fake hair. That'S what we're trying to avoid this is my real hair. Take your take a section just like this. You want it to stop right where the ear starts so go ahead and do that on both sides clip the rest of this back, we'll work on that later. I'M combing this and i'm going to over direct this forward. Take little crab claws here. Come on in here. Come on down here's my real hair, i'm going to slide my fingers down. My finger position is diagonal not like this. That will trick your brain into cutting straight across, keep it diagonal. It'S hugging my face gon na open, my sheer or scissors, and i'm going to do the same sort of technique that i did previously i'm just gliding it and cranking it down. While moving my finger position down and gliding gliding gliding gliding gliding not taking a whole lot off, i know that looks like a lot, but i still have a lot here. We don't want to go in for the kill, then you're, just gon na have to throw another dang hair extension in there. I don't know same thing here: we go gon na go in and glide this down, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank crank and i'm gon na do mine one more time. So same kind of thing, diagonal, crank, crank, crank, crank crank and i'm actually going to cut this little length off right here like such still not good enough for my liking. So now i'm going to take little pieces. Oopsie girl scouts have a little bit in there. I'M going to take little pieces and start just texturizing it one by one taking that off taking that off, so you can see how much better that blends, instead of just being straight across it's now diagonal a nice face framing layer. That'S very soft! Now i'm going to go in on the other side and repeat the process now, depending on if you're, right-handed or left-handed, it may be a little bit harder because it's going to be backwards. But take your time same kind of thing and my layers on my real hair are actually shorter on this side because of these bangs. So there's my guide, i'm going to start there and start cranking at this moving this forward. I actually have a little bit of weight in my bang area, so i'm going to go through and just lightly kiss that to take off that big weight. Now, at any point in this, if you see, for example, you have a blunt line, let me make one real quick. Let me get some more okay. So if you accidentally messed up - and you have a very choppy d chop - it's okay, don't panic point cut it out, lift it up, just give it a little kiss up up up up down up down up down there. She goes nothing ever happened. Now. We'Re gon na go through and cut some layers into this. The first thing that we want to do is to clip back the length, so we don't make any mistakes when we're cutting layers, we're not cutting into our actual length. That was step. One we've already done that so to ensure that there are no mistakes, go ahead and take right above your ear, i would say like at least an inch or so around here, i'm going to again put this inside of a ponytail now unclip, the top. So for this you want to think of the top of your head as if it were a complete pumpkin pie and at the center of the pie, we're gon na start, dividing it in two slices, so triangular subsections, i'm gon na start in the back here by Just taking a big triangular-ish subsection does not have to be uniform, don't worry about getting real technical. Take this straight out, hold it in whatever way it feels comfortable. For me, it's taking little crab claws going in with a peace sign. I'M gon na slide this puppy down until i get to this point where my real hair is meeting my fake hair, this is the main part that we need to blend, because it's a complete change of shape or drop off slide. This down here goes my real hair and that's the last part that dropped off. Now i'm going to take my scissors shear do the same sort of technique and i do have a little little tiny, tiny, tiny bit of my real hair that i am going to cut. You don't have to cut your real hair with this, but it does make it look a lot better we're going to go in with the belly this year and we're going to start cranking it sliding it down. Cranking it not sliding it. You can slide it, but that mocks the razor more so and it takes off more weight. We want to do baby steps, especially if this is your first time crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank down. She goes repeat the process because i'm taking very little pieces off, so i'm going to do this multiple multiple times versus going in for the keel weights dropping off right there. That'S my cue to start going in there crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank crank. I don't have to worry about. Oh am i supposed to cut this or not? No, because your length is pinned up, you can cut the hell out of this. If you want to you got your length, but might i suggest just doing a nice even slope here? So it's not the mullet-esque look unless that's what you're going for! Then you do you sister. You got this, i'm going to take little bitty pie slices just picking up random ones. Finding where my real hair is there, you are right there, cutting that corner out or that weight now you may be wondering well, is this going to make my hair look thinner? No, it's not! Not only is it going to blend it, it's going to make it look a lot thicker, especially when you curl it, because you're going to have all this short, pushing against the long to give you more volume more fullness. Now, for the back, i like to just take a piece pie shape and over direct it for why you want to over direct. This forward is because it's going to create a nice change of shape, we'll have shorter layers going to a nice softer long in the back. So the more you over direct something the more length is saved. So here we go from the back, taking a vertical piece cutting above my fingers now waiting for that drop off and just sliding this thing down, while over directing here's another piece in the back same thing, there is oh, i need to color match that there's my Real hair over directing this and just sliding this girl down and i'm just going to go ahead and cut all that length off, because i want a nice shorter layer in the back, i'm happy with that, so i'm going to go through on the other side. Again, i still have my length clipped up, so there's no opportunity for me to make a mistake, taking it out vertically waiting for my hair to drop off there. She goes down down down down down down here. We go another piece vertically got really short layers on this side. Picking up the next one swinging it from the back there's my guide, i'm just kind of eyeballing that not too concerned if i cut my real hair to be honest with you and notice how my shears are facing diagonal they're, not straight up and down that's going To whack that whole dang thing off diagonal, think of what you're doing you're, taking a piece of hair and slivering it off. So you have short short short short shorts, long you're, not okay, careful coming in from the back here. There goes that as my guide and i'm gon na take a lot off this, because that is my back layer perfect. You can see here when i take it out to the side how nice that looks short going too long swing both of these around, and i can see that this one is a little bit shorter, so i'm going to just hack that off looks good to me. What doesn't look good is my bang area. There'S a lot of weight right here, so let's fix that. I'M going to take a triangular subsection like so twist this couple times and point cut this up and down up and down. I'M not going diagonal diagonal diagonal diagonal. I'M just going up down up down, then i want to put a little bit of an angle on this, so i'm going to go through and do the same thing, cutting that corner off or that tip, and i actually like a really kind of short piece right. There, because the short will push against the long and create an illusion of thickness and that's what we want here. This is an optical illusion at its finest this hair is. I am a magician taking this doing the same kind of technique on my bangs just giving those a little bit of layering. I do like a nice shania twain feather bang. Now at this point, if you need to trim up your actual layers of your real hair, if you have short layers like i do, you can just take them straight up and point cut them. I'Ve already done that a while ago, but you do want your actual real hair to have a nice haircut and look healthy because that's going to make these blend a lot better, all right! Now, let's take these ponies out. Let'S see what we're working with much better and it's going to look even better when i curl it and style it, but i'm going to go through now and refine it. And i just like to do that by taking vertical sections taking the thinning shears and just doing it once just one time. We don't want to get scissor happy with these things just one time as i get scissor happy and i really like to focus on the corners of my head. If you think of your head as a square and you put an x in it, it would have four corners. Typically, you won't have bulk here, because you don't grow hair on your forehead. Most of us don't anyway, but you will have bulk on these back two corners, which reside right here, so how to get rid of that. Take that puppy vertical and i like to go in the mid shaft with this thing hack at it, that's going to get rid of that bulk same thing on this side, mid shaft vertically go in snip snip all right. Ladies hey days and gays thanks again for joining me here in my bathroom, i can't wait to see you for episode 21 of sunday service and that's where i make a really big deal at ordering things on a sunday.
