How to Cut Your Own Hair

There are a few things that could potentially go wrong if you decide to get creative with the scissors on your hair at home, while you’re unable to get your regular trim at the salon. However, if you follow these top tips, you can learn how to cut your own hair evenly and achieve a fresh salon look from the comfort of your own home!

How to Cut Your Own Hair: Important Tips for Beginners

1. Invest in the right tools

It may be tempting to reach for the kitchen scissors rather than ordering some styling shears designed for the task. However, it’s more important that you invest in the correct product to ensure you get the cut you want, and your hair remains healthy.

2. Trimming not chopping

Remember, you are just giving yourself a little trim to keep things fresh and tidy, not going for the chop. Take a little less off the length than you think you need; you can always go back and trim more, but once it’s off, that’s it. If you are thinking of going for a completely new style, it’s always best to wait until you can get in at the salon.

3. Should it be cut wet or dry?

It’s important to work with your natural hair texture rather than against it, with different textures being easier to trim depending on whether they are wet or dry. If you have curly hair, it’s easier to cut when dry, but if your hair is straight, feel free to dampen or wet before cutting. Why is this, you ask? Well, this is because wet hair shrinks, so it’s easier to see the exact length when the hair is dry.

4. Embrace point cutting

If you want to know how to cut your own hair evenly, we would recommend cutting into the hair vertically, so the cut is less blunt and, therefore, less pressure on you to make sure it’s perfectly in-line.

How to Cut Your Own Hair: Method

Straight Hair

• Remember, even if your hair is straight, it may have slightly shrunk once it’s wet, so consider that when you decide how much hair you would like to cut off.

• Divide your hair, so the front and the back of the hair are completely separated.

• Starting from the back of the hair and working in very small sections at a time, point cut just the ends of the hair.

• Work your way towards the front, ensuring each section you take matches the last section and feels even when measuring various sections in your hands.

Curly Hair

• Divide your dry hair into small sections using clips across your whole head.

• Try and let your hair be as natural as possible, so you know exactly how much will be cut off and what it will look like.

• Point cut each small section, measuring each one with your hands to feel if your cutting is even across the sections.

• If your layers are short at the top, then we wouldn’t recommend cutting those, as they will blend into the rest of the hair regardless and won’t look out of place.

Top tip: For short hair, if you can wait it out until you can get an appointment at the salon, then that would be better, as short hair is a lot less forgiving. If you can’t wait, then take extra care when cutting and approach each stage with patience.
