Waiting For Long Hair

Let’s be honest, we all at one point in our lives have had a haircut we didn’t like. Whether we had bad bangs, butchered layers, or any of a thousand other issues, it almost seems that a bad haircut is one of the many rites of passage every young woman faces. However, once you have gotten the bad cut, what do you do? Should you just wait for your hair to grow out to fix it, or do you scrap it all and cut off?

For my whole life I have had long hair - like Rapunzel level long hair. When I finally decided to chop some of it off, the stylist didn’t quite understand what I was wanting and was not experienced in cutting super curly hair and I ended up with a knotted mess. I remember when I was returning to school the Monday following this incident, I wore a hat because I was so embarassed of the results. At the same time, I was in a relationship with someone who knew how much my hair meant to me and noticed immediately that something was off when I refused to remove my hat. Instead of making a big fuss about it in front of everyone, they took me aside and I showed them what had happened.

Has the same ever happened to you? If it has, you know how difficult it can be to decide what to do with your hair in the meantime - especially if your hair is anything like mine and grows incredibly slow. Once the initial shock dissipates, there are a few options you can consider in order to not have to hide under a hat like I did.

Wear a Lightweight, Aerated Wig

Wearing a wig can seem like it would actually stifle the growth of your hair, but most wigs are lightweight and won’t stress the hair follicles and can actually help to keep your natural hair healthy while it grows back.

Consult Another Stylist

In my experience, going back to the same stylist after having a bad experience often will yield poor results. After this particularly bad haircut, I went to a new stylist who fixed what she could and then suggested we add in some human extensions to add a bit of fullness until my hair returned to a place that I liked. She used lightweight extensions that attached with a bead in individual sections so to not cause any breakage and allow my hair the aeration it needed to grow healthily without having to sacrifice my day to day comfortability.

Go Ahead, Buy A Hat (or headcover)!

For some, these two other options don’t allow you to see the light at the end of the tunnel, so you may decide that wearing a hat, scarf or some other hair accessory will be a more effective way to mask your hair cut disaster.

My personal favorite is to use a scarf and tie it up 1960’s style! In conclusion, dealing with a hair disaster can be difficult, there are ways to get around it and it can be done well and easily. Don’t let a bad haircut ruin your day, use this as a perfect chance to try new styles you would never have previously considered!
