As everyone has differences in their undertones and coloration in their skin, it can be difficult to know which undertone you have. It may even be difficult to tell what your undertone means, regarding what colors would work for you. But fear not! Below is a guide made just for you, to help you quickly determine your skin tone.

What Is My Skin Tone?

If you were born with fair skin like me, you might be assuming that you must, of course, have cool toned skin. Though my assumption was correct, my sister is also fair. But unlike me, she has warm undertones. Therefore, colors on us appear very different, and what works for one may not work for the other. Figuring out what skin tone you have is pretty simple. Look at the veins on your wrist: cool toned people will have blue or purple veins while those with warm skin will have greenish veins. If it looks like you may have a blended color, then you are probably neutral.

Making The Call

In contradiction from what this term invokes, "warm tones" illicit a reaction that you should look for warm colors. This is not the case; you want to avoid those colors if you have warm toned skin. Choosing warm colors can actually give you a dull appearance and take away the beautiful warmth that is already there. So if you're still not sure, take a trip to your nearest makeup store where they color match, and they will be able to tell you precisely what your undertones are.

 

So, What Are My Options?

If you have fair and warm toned skin, look for something like an ashy blonde color or even a light brown with ash tones. If you're looking for something edgy and cool, go for a blue-black color for some awesome contrast.

If your natural hair color is medium to dark (and you have a warm skin tone) try adding in some highlights and lowlights to give variation. As a general rule, avoid adding in too much gold or red as the idea here is to compliment your natural warmth by giving it a cool counterpart. If you do decide to go with colors in the red family, make sure you accompany them with cool colors, pale blonde highlights and ash browns. Yellow is a warm color, so a good compromise for someone who loves red but has a warm skin tone is a violet red purple is complimentary (opposite) color to yellow on the color wheel and therefore when they are paired, it's pleasing on the eye.
