Thanks for being Part Of The FSE FAMILY!

Hey guys, Matt back from free salon education.com, I just finished up this shag haircut. I think you guys are really going to like this one. It'S a nice longer haircut, so I think that's something we don't do all the time and longer haircuts in the salon can get a little bit boring. So here's a new modern twist on a shag. It'S a really user friendly haircut. So it's not too complicated for you. We take out a lot of weight, so people that are looking for a haircut that might work better on thick, thick, coarse hair. This is a great haircut, for that does remove a lot of weight enjoy. The video guys hit like hit comment hit comment just comment. Let me know what you think. I would love to know whether you like the haircut or not, and who you're planning on doing this haircut on and let me know what haircuts you guys want to see. So we can create more videos for you here. We go alright, so we're going to start off the haircut by sectioning. This is the simplest sectioning. You will ever do in a haircut so we're going to take out a triangle from the front bang area so basically from the recession point to just below the high point of the head. So I'm going to say maybe 3 inches up from the center of the head you're going to take that parting now, we'll clip away. I clip away one side of the head and then I start off by taking my diagonal forward parting cutting my guide at exactly 90 degrees, so pretty much straight out from the head shape. The head shape curbs forward slightly towards the forehead, so that 90 degrees isn't going to be straight up in the air. It'S going to be a slight angle forward, then I continue down the head shape using that first section that I cut as my guideline. So stationary guides through that part, then, once I start to round around the ear that head starts to peel away, I take out a section of that hair and that becomes my guide so now, because I don't want to over direct everything, because once you round to Many corners of the head, the hair, just gets too heavy and the layers just fall too flat. So just because I had that stationary guide doesn't mean I'm going to cut there the entire time I'm going to do the same thing on the opposite side. So, over directing everything up now, a big question is going to come up. How do you match up each side? What I did was, I took a little piece from the back corner, use that, as my guide kept my angle at 90 degrees and that allowed me to keep a very similar length. Now that doesn't mean you want you won't. You won't want to go in during the dry, cut and soften any layers or anything like that, but it tends to work pretty well okay, so there is just like before once I got down to the ear. I created a new guideline just by sectioning away the top and working from the middle down. Now we're going to work into the fringe. Big thing with the fringe is you'll notice. My elevation isn't super high and I shift my finger angled down on each side. So I'm bringing everything out, I cut it straight at the beginning and then just to add that angle into the bang area. I go through and just shift my finger angle. That gives me my angle in the haircut, but it keeps the weight in there. So I could over direct everything which would also work, but sometimes when you over direct, you have to elevate and that takes out a little bit too much weight. So just shifting your finger angle keeps the weight of the the bang, which I think a heavier bang. Looks great with a shag haircut now, I'm just going through with my vibra straight iron: ironing it out working a lot a lot of times with vertical sections when I'm ironing, so I don't crease the hair, so you'll notice as I work through and then I polish, The top section usually horizontally, I almost done to there - you can see the layers in the movement the the greatest thing about a shag haircut as long as you don't make it multi. Looking for your guests, this is a very guest friendly haircut or customer friendly haircut, because it's just a lot of layers, so they could feather it back. They can wear it forward like this there's so many different things they can do now we're going to hold the hair at the exact same way that we did when we cut it wet, but I'm just going to go through and do some point cutting with my Beautiful Mizutani scissors that I love so go through point, cutting just softening those edges and really just skinning it up little bit because anytime, you have a stationary guide. We were layering it through. We were elevating everything nice and high, but it's always cool. To have add a little separation to those layers notice how I'm not going super deep and I'm also working very vertical to the way that I'm holding the hair. So I'm not trying to cut too many chunks into the shape that I created and the other great thing about going through and point cutting. This way is just to make sure that I don't change or alter the shape of the haircut. A lot of people will just start pulling hair up and point cutting it wherever they want to it's very important when you're point cutting to hold the hair exactly the same as you did when you were doing the wet cut. So you keep the initial shape of the haircut but you're just going in and softening those layers. Now I'm going to work through the back in a pinwheel section or pie-shaped sections or pizza shaped sections whatever you want to call it work my way across the back of the head point: cutting concave layers into the haircut. I like this because it kind of attaches like because we over directed everything forward. It pushed all that weight to the very back of the head. So what this is going to do for me is it's going to kind of skinny up the back. Add some texture into the back some shorter layers as well, which in styling is going to make this haircut really come together. So you can see those little pc layers coming through carve is one of my favorite products. I love its a textured wax, but it's not super heavy, so I even like it in long hair, you can see how it just pops and those layers come to life to create that kind of shag. Haircut look now there are going to be questions. The bang is in her eye I, for some reason love having bangs in people's eyes. I don't know why, but you can absolutely cut those bangs shorter. Oh actually, I left it a little bit opened up there. So if you guys liked this video, please share it with your friends. I'D love to hear in your comments what you think, thanks for checking out the video check out free salon, education, com for more videos, you

Kathy Goodwater: What a great video! I'm not a licensed stylist, and I have had so many stylists NOT cut my hair as I want. As a result I'm always trying to cut my own. WOW! After watching your tutorial I cut my shoulder length hair into a perfect shag. I LOVE IT! Did I like the tutorial? LOVED IT! Thank you so much.

melody Koko: Okay, so I just did this on myself and I love it. I had no idea it could be so easy, then why can't I find a stylist who can do it? I kept my length and it looks a lot like the mannequins. Thank you for the video!!

Natalie Krueger: I love this. I had been looking for a modern shag how-to for months until I saw this!! I would love to see maybe a super simple blueprint for these cuts so we could screen shot them and have them on hand in the salon. Thanks!!!

Aria: As a recently licensed Cosmetologist I love these videos. There great for quick refreshers before I start my day. Thank you!

michellesteil: Matt, thank you for Free Salon Education and for this video. With your expert instruction I gave myself a great, timeless cut that seems to elude so many professionals. They all need to be schooled in your methods. Bravo!

Terri Collins: Love this look. I’ve got lots of body in my hair (fine w/lots of hair—gets heavy if layers aren’t cut properly). With graduated layers, I can wash my hair and let it dry curly or blow dry it straight. I really like how you cut bangs in an inverted V. I usually have them cut a “C” on each side around my face. Keeps it from looking so heavy around my face. My main problem with hairdressers is they CANNOT cut a shag these days. When I try to let my hair dry naturally and let it curl, some of my layers curl more or less depending on the length. I cannot seem to get hairdressers to understand how to cut layers evenly all the way down my hair. I wear my hair in more of a medium/short shag. Can you PLEASE cut this length on video so I can show my hairdresser. (Btw, seems like the halfway section in back of my hair is always longer than top layers or bottom layers.). I like my hair length to come down a little past my chin. I have a teardrop shaped face. Sorry so long winded. Nobody can cut correct shags anymore. Watched this long-shag video, and I was so excited to see that you could PROPERLY cut a shag. ( I’m 58yo and this is a great look and easy to fix if cut properly) —-T Collins (Louisiana Gal)

zatikki: Very well done, and easy to follow what you were doing, thank you! This technique helped me tidy up the mess I'd recently made by cutting my hair the way I used to do it when I was teenager in *ahem^ 1975. Love ya, man!

Jana Cobb: I just did this haircut and it turned out soooooo good!! I forgot to take a pic, as usual, but it was awesome. Thanks so much for the video! You're the best!!!

Heather Štefanec: LOVE! Did this on myself but left the length and it is PERFECT. Did it myself because no hairdresser ever seems to give me what I want (since my favorite one moved a few years back) cut wise and I'm sick of it. I kept my bangs sideswept and it looks wonderful. I have a folding mirror to ensure accuracy. Couldn't be happier. FINALLY happy with a cut. Thank you!

Macaroni Darnendo: Thank you for this video. Now I can go to the stylist and show them how this is done! I wish for this hair cut for a while now but all I get is a "bob hair vut with a little frizzle at the bottom" and I could not explain them how that should look like. Thank you once again you are amazing. Keep on great work!

Roberta Palladino: I really love this cut! you have a great gift, thanks for all of your videos I'm really learning a lot! ♡

Hayley Gregory: Fantastic tutorial! Thanks for the professional language, terminology and execution.

Rochelle Sumeray: I love this. You’re such a pro. I would like to see more of a curtain bangs look not quite so heavy (as you did mention in the video as an option) with more whisky pointing at the bang and a little more height on top making it a little more like a pixie mullet / shag. How would you do that?maybe I’ll find it amongst your other vids. Thanks again.

C Blackwell: I love learning from you, I respect and value my Sassoon roots, they taught me consistency and structure, but Teachers like you inspire creativity, and when I’m feeling a bit of a stylist block, yes I get them, watching a couple haircuts helps get my groove back I would live to see you cut a chin length bob square no layers but loose you feel me. I would live to see how you get in it. If your not feeling it, anything will do. Thanks again

Angela Archer: I had a shorter shag and loved it. The layers and cut work really well with my waves so I can easily style with a blow dryer, brush and pomade. I need to get back to that haircut.

LoveoftheDark Fiber Arts: I loved this, thank you. A friend of mine is wanting something new, and I think this will be perfect!

Annette Varela: Great hair cut I tried this cut on my daughter she loved it! Thank you...

Anna Armstrong: So Easy !!!! Thank you! I believe stylists struggle so much with haircutting because they cannot remember the partings. I will totally use this haircut tutorial behind the chair and when educating.

JennieFurFur Zetter: I’m starting my first official day as an apprentice tomorrow and this was the EXACT haircut my client was asking for! I feel completely confident that I can make this happen for her. THANK YOU.
