Color Matching for Toppers

Finding the right color of topper, hairpiece, and extensions that perfectly matches your hair color can be challenging. Luckily, we have a great process to help you with color matching, and there are many things you can do for yourself to help navigate the sea of options at your fingertips.

The best place to begin is to understand your skin tone and the complexities within your skin and hair tone.

Now if you're like me and you have fair skin, you might assume that you must, of course, have cool toned skin. However, though this was my assumption and I happened to be correct, my aunt who is also fair like me has warm undertones. So, colors on us look different.

Figuring out what you are is pretty simple. Look at the veins on your wrist: people with a cool skin tone will have blue or purple veins while those with warm skin will have veins with a green hue. If it looks like you have a blended color, then you are probably neutral. Still not sure? Take a trip to your nearest makeup store where they color match, and they will be able to tell you precisely what your undertones are - but be careful because I did that in a Sephora and left spending way more money than I intended! Got to love makeup!

In contradiction from what the term invokes, warm skin tones illicit a reaction that you should look for warm colors. This is actually not the case; you want to avoid those colors if you have warm toned skin. Choosing warm colors for you will make your skin dull looking and take away the beautiful warmth that is already there. So, if you have warm toned skin, look for colors that have ash in them.

Following this same rule, if you have cool toned skin you will want to look for colors that have a warm tone so you are complimenting your gorgeous cool tone! To match the topper with your natural hair color you will then need to make some more conclusions about your hair. The first is the level of dark to light. Here is a simple guide to help you navigate the color system:

• 1 to 1B are black colors
• 2 to 12 are browns
• 14 to 26 are blondes
• 27 to 33 are natural red colors
• 130 to 132 are vibrant reds
• 34 to 60 are grays!

Keep in mind that hair toppers are a bit different from matching full wigs or even extensions as the topper lays on your crown area and allows your natural hair to show underneath. In my experience, the outermost layer of my hair has always been just a bit lighter than the rest of my hair as the sun over the years has naturally given my hair highlights and low lights. So when I look for a topper, I choose a color that is just one shade lighter than my natural color.
