Have you ever wondered what hair color would look absolutely perfect on you, based on your eye color and your skin color, to make your features pop? Well then, wheel yourself in we're talking about color theory today: wheels like color wheel now. Look i'm a strong believer that the best color for you is the one that makes you feel the most beautiful. But is it true that you really can't wear every color um? Oh um? Well, absolutely not! You can wear any color. You want as long as it's the right tone for you or you just do as you please, but if you want to find the perfect tones for you, then there are some things that you may want to consider and we're going to go over. All of these things today in this video, because if you don't consider these very important things like our skin tone and our eye color, then you may end up looking like this. When really you want it to look something like this? What'S good everybody, it's your main girl mel feeling brand new and if you are new, welcome to the channel, i'm so glad to have you here. I am a professional hair stylist, a lover of color, and my duty with this channel is to help you achieve the hair of your dreams, but while also doing it helpfully by the end of this video, we are going to determine what is your temperature? What are your undertones, what is your natural hair color category and what is your hair texture, because these are all the things as a professional, hair, stylist and colorist? I consider when i am determining the perfect hair color for someone, but we've got to work together. So take out your notebook, i'm going to be asking you a couple questions like what was your hair color when you were a child which you may think is random, but it is a very important question when determining what your best hair color is going to be, And i'm going to share all this information with you, so you can make sure that you do not make any mistakes at your next color appointment by accidentally, maybe getting a color that isn't right for you and your skin tone and it doesn't make you pop and It doesn't work for your hair and it doesn't last because you didn't consider the following. So let's avoid that and without further ado, let's get to it. So the key to looking your best, most vibrant, beautiful, looking self is by wearing colors of your personal palette. Think bob ross, when he's holding his little color palette, your color palette is going to be an array of different tones and hues and when you think about your color palette, think about the big picture, how all of those colors come together. That'S exactly what we want to focus on when determining your hair color now what's fun about changing your hair color is you can either make it contrasting by incorporating opposite tones such as blue hair on orange skin, or rather, copper hair on blue eyes? You know what i meant or by adding contrast in the value of the color. So if you are very, very fair and you wear very dark, hair or platinum hair on dark skin, that is going to give a lot of contrast to your palette and be very eye-catching now. On the other hand, your hair color palette can be very harmonious. A harmonious color can be very monochromatic all the same types of tones on one person, for example. I think my hair color is very harmonious to me, but what am i we need to determine our undertones before we decide if we want to go contrasting or harmonious with your hair color palette, we need to determine if your undertones are warm or cool. Let us begin with skin. Now there are three undertones that exist on the two extremes: we have warm toned and cool toned and the third one would be in between as neutral figuring out. Your skin tone can be a little bit tricky because of tens. Our skin color can change based on how much time we spend in the sun. Usually the sun will give everyone kind of a warm or golden glow, but that being said, how you tan is a very good indicator of what your undertone is. If you sunburn easily, you may have cool toned skin. Some other good indicators of having cool toned skin would be that against a white sheet of paper, your skin can look very red, pink or even blue. Now, there's another thing that you can do in direct sunlight. Look at the inner portion of your wrist and the inside of your wrist is the thinnest piece of skin, and you can see your veins if you have tattoos. This may be an issue for you, but when you're taking a look at your veins in direct sunlight, if they look blue or purple, that is an indicator that your undertone is cool toned. Now, if you're still not sure another cool trick i like to do is actually to use some paint swatches. Now you don't have to use paint swatches. You can use any colored anything to compare your tones now. On the other hand, if you tan really well, that's a good sign that you have a warm undertone to your skin against the white sheet of paper. If your skin looks almost yellowish and golden, then that would tell you that you are warm actually you're hot and when looking at the inside of your wrist, your veins appear to be greenish. Color is so much fun now, at this point, you've probably determined. I'M definitely cool, i'm definitely warm, but if you haven't you're, probably neutral and hey me too, now i'm not in direct sunlight right now, but in direct sunlight. When i compare my veins to this kind of olivey green palette compared to this more blue palette and even against the violet palette, fun fact this is the color of my bedroom. My veins are both a combination of green and blue and i can definitely tan pretty easily, but i have to wear sunscreen on the first day. Otherwise i am burning. I am burning and i will be red, but when i do tan, it's really nice and golden. If i tan a lot, i can be orange. That'S a different story, but overall i'm kind of in this mix match if you're also neutral, it's really fun because you have more options with your hair. Now that doesn't mean that if you have cool toned skin, that you have to have cool toned hair, but you know that for sure those tones will look really good on you, but remember neutrals. We can have it all now, besides your skin undertones, you may also want to consider the shade of your skin. If you have very fair, very white and pale skin, you may want to stick to lighter shades of color more of the blonde ranges, because this will look more natural on you and it won't make you look as pale, whereas on darker shades of skin, you can Pull off black hair, any shade of brown and even different reds, and once again, if you are somewhere in the middle with a medium tone, skin, you can go really light with blonde. You can go really dark with black and everything in between you're really a versatile queen. Now i wanted to talk about your skin color and your undertones first, because that's usually the first thing you want to take in consideration when determining your hair color with your eyes. However, the windows to the soul, your eyes will always look best and pop more. If you create that visual contrast, our eyes are our greatest feature and it's usually what we really want to focus on when we are framing our face with our hair color. Now you may have already noticed now that my hair is a little bit darker. My eyes are popping even brighter. That'S because i've created some visual contrast between the darkness and the light eyes. Your eyes will always shine brighter if they are framed with darkness. Now, whether you have light eyes or dark eyes, let's figure out your undertone. If your eyes tend to have gold and yellow and orange in them, then you guessed it. You have warm undertones in your eyes. Cool toned eyes, of course, would be blue gray, light green and even violet eyes if your eyes look very grayish and bluish. Obviously they are cool toned now once again, using myself as an example, getting real close here, depending on the lighting and depending on what i'm wearing my eyes are a light green and they can even look gray, which is more on the cool spectrum. But all around my pupils there is this flare of this amber gold color. That again would classify my eyes as neutral. I can swing both ways. It'S so fun! Sorry, if you're, not it's fine, we're gon na we're gon na get to the fun things that you can do now. What about the undertones of our hair as a stylist, i've literally heard a million times. My hair goes very red. My hair goes very orange. My hair goes very warm and okay. Everyone has these warm undertones in our hair when we are lightening our hair, but some people will pull warmer and have more warm tones in their hair than others, making them harder to lighten and as a stylist, i can actually determine how your hair is going to Lighten and if it is going to pull warm based on how your hair was when you were a child and yes, you may think that is very random. But i'm taking you down memory lane we're going to pull up the photo albums and we're going to determine what your hair was like in your youth, and this is going to tell us what your hair color category is now. According to the american board of certified hairdressers, there are four hair color categories across the globe. Now each of these categories have very distinct traits and everyone watching will find themselves in these categories to determine what your undertones are and how your hair is going to take to color. This is very important. Do you still have your notebook jot this down? The first of these categories is category b. This category accounts for 75 to 80 of the entire world's population, so there is a very good chance that you are a category b client. Now people in the b category are born with very dark hair that stays dark. Pretty much throughout their entire lives until they go gray. Now, when we take a look at the hair, color level system, a level one would be the darkest black hair and a level 10 would be the lightest blonde platinum. But if you are a person in the category b, your hair color is naturally between levels, one two and three so very dark brown. Now the next category is category w. The w category stands for warm brown. Now. Let me know if this sounds like you: when you were a young child, you were born with blonde or sandy brown hair and slowly, as you got older into your teen years, you dark into a brown sorry. This one hits different for me. Yeah. You know most people in the w category would consider themselves brunette because that's how they looked in their high school years, which are some of the most formative years. For me, i still look at my childhood and i'm like i'm that little blonde kid, i'm not that blond kid anymore. However, if you are in the w category, your hair can lighten in the sun kind of like a blonde, but not quite if you are category b. This is not going to happen for you, your your hair, won't really lighten in the sun, but category w. You definitely can get those natural highlights in the sun, even though you are a brunette people in the warm brown category can range from a level four to five to six and the highest being a seven. So this is all within the medium brown to the light brown darkest blonde range. Now i myself right now, i'm currently at about a level seven eight! You hear that mel you're, not a real blonde you're, not in the s category. The s category stands for soft brown, and this is the blonde category your hair might have darkened after childbirth, but for the most part you have been blonde your whole life and you probably want to stay blonde. You may do anything to stay blonde. You are probably the one in and out of the salon, the most because you are not having any of the roots about nine percent of the world's population is a part of the s category which accounts for people in the levels, 7, 8, 9 and 10 range. So this is the lightest of the four categories. Now the last category is the rarest of the rare. It is category r for the redheads. Only one percent of the population is considered a natural redhead, and this is how you know if you are in the r category, if you were a redhead and you still are a redhead, or at least you were throughout your high school and most of your life. If you've now gone gray, you're still considered in the r category, but for anyone that may have had reddish blonde colors when they were younger that soon darkened to brown, you are not considered a redhead. You would be in the warm brown category with me. Come along. It'S okay, hair color in the r category can range from a strawberry blonde, to a copper to a bright auburn red, and this category usually ranges from a level four. Five and six are you b for dark brown? Are you w like me or are you s blonde like i want to be, or are you the rarest of the rare are comment below which hair color category you are and remember it because your hair color category is so important when you want to change your Hair color now the main thing that determines the differences between the four categories is the amount of melanin and the placement of types of melanin. In other words, if you have very dark hair you're in the lower levels, you're going to have a lot of melanin in your hair and if you're in the higher levels, you may not have as much melanin in your hair. But you will have a type of melanin that is very warm called. Pheomelanin. Pheomelanin is the type of melanin that controls the warmth in your hair. So if you can literally see warmth in your hair as the sun is shining through, you can determine that there is a lot of fail melanin in your hair and it's going to be harder for you to get those lighter platinum, ashier tones as a hair stylist. I wanted to bring this up because everyone has these melanins in their hair that causes this warmth. On the bright side, most people look good with this warmth, especially if you are neutral to warm warm tones. Look great in your hair because they're very harmonious to your palette, but even if you are more cool toned, having warm tones in your hair may be that contrast. That makes your other features pop. However, if you are not into warm tones, i do not recommend you. Go lighter with your hair color because going lighter is always going to expose warmth and it's always going to fade. Warm you're always going to have that warmth. So you either do it or you know you do it or you know next year, don't forget about the texture. If you're going to be coloring your hair, you need to consider what your hair texture is, because not all hair types will be able to take certain colors, for example, category b again i'm using category b as an example, because most of the population is category b. People in the b category usually have more of a coarse texture, because it is so dark. It does have more melanin in the hair strand, which means their hair strands individually are thicker, and when you have such a thick hair strand with so much melanin in it, it's going to be hard to lift to a light level. But luckily coarse strands tend to be stronger than fine strands. If you have fine little baby thin strands, strickles little baby hairs, your hairs likely won't have as much melanin pigments. So it will be easier to lighten and lift. But you don't want to go overboard. You have to be very careful going lighter because fine hair is fragile, so when you are determining a hair color for yourself, keep in mind your hair type and texture and finally, that's everything you want to keep in mind now, it's time to decide the hair color For you and i'll use myself as an example to explain how i got this end color my natural hair color category is w the hair color that grows from my scalp right now is a natural level. Five and my natural dark hair can appear very cool until the sun hits it, which can cause my hair to lighten a little bit and reveal some warmth. Therefore, my hair has both warm and cool tones and the undertones in my skin and my eyes are also neutral. I wanted to keep my hair color neutral, so i could have versatility with my outfits. I can play up both the warm tones and the cool tones and overall, the tones in my color palette are harmonious, but now that my hair color is a little bit darker, i was able to create that visual contrast to bring out the lightness in my eyes Now this hair color is also going to grow out beautifully because it is such a close match to my natural. My ends are about two to three shades lighter than my natural, which already has such a nice gradient grow out. It appears very natural on me and that's what i like in my hair. I, like my hair, to look very natural. I obviously want my features to pop and i want to be able to have versatility to swing both ways. So that's how i created this medium. Dark blonde with neutral undertones - and i love it - it's not too light for me and it's definitely not too dark for me. Oh my god note to self, never, never color your hair blackmail. That is scary. So now that we've completely analyzed me and decided that this was my perfect hair color. Let'S take a look at some of the options for you and what you may want to consider now. My sister and i have created some flow charts for you to follow. So without further ado, you can go ahead and screenshot if you are a category b. If you are a category w, if you are category s, i envy you end for category r follow the charts. Let me know what you get down in the comment section below and if you end up calling your hair following the charts, please tag me in your instagram photos. I'D love to see it now, i'd like to close off this video. Just by saying that you would honestly look amazing in any color as long as it's the right tone for you, and i hope you found this video helpful. I hope it helped. You understand your undertones and maybe decide if you want to go for something more contrasting or something more harmonious. If you want to go with something more natural looking or something a little more out there, no matter what you do, i wish you the healthiest of hair, and if this video did help you out, then make sure you give it a thumbs up. Manes by Mell: If you liked this video, make sure you checkout HOW TO PICK THE BEST HAIRCUT FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE, HAIR TEXTURE & LIFESTYLE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XugtsPW_kU8 Thanks for watching!

Just Commenting: Mell: What's your hair color? Me: Black Mell: What's your hair color when you were a child? Me: Black Mell: What's your eye color? Me: Black Mell: What's your category? Me: Black Mell: What's your vein color? Me: Black Mell: What's your soul color? Me: Black

Julian animations: Girl, my skin tone, hair and eyes are exactly like yours! For a long time I thought I was a cool tone, but I am able to pull off warmer tones so now that you mention it I can see I am totally a neutral! You’re a life saver!!

LRiv43: Been a year since you made this and here you are still helping us! Thank you for putting this out. At 44 I'm just starting with the grays. Dyed my hair ONCE in my lifetime. I'm a W/ warm tones. Lightest brown/ darkest blond as a kid, lighter in the sun. Now I'm a dark brown like you. This video helped SO much! Thank you for making it!

Stephanie Uribe: You grabbed my attention right off the back with your amazing energy! Your so darn cute with such a great personality!!!

Desiree: This was an absolutely amazing video in hair color theory. I learned a lot and appreciate your time and effort to educate us! Such a beautiful, engaging young lady. Keep up the awesome work and I imagine you'll go do far, if you already haven't. Take care

Manes by Mell: remember Mell, another note to self DO NOT COLOUR YOUR HAIR BLACK..... Do we like the new colour? I hope this video helped you decide your next hair colour! Thank you so much for watching

Zosia Aniela: I used to be S in my youth, and now I'm W, but I've always wanted to be R. Thank you for this very helpful video! It's tough being a neutral - until you realize how awesome it is to be neutral. What really helped me in this video was when you explained eye color - I haven't heard that explained before, only the veins and white paper theories.

Minna Ventola: Thank you so much for the video and the charts, Mell! You have inspired me to colour my hair. I am category W and level 7, I think. I had a very blond hair, like platinum, the first my hair started to grow when I was 2+ years old, it then over the years first got a little darker to level 9, then it again changed to a little darker to level 8 during my teens, and now I am 7 or 6. My colour palette is somewhere between cool - neutral.

EmmDelilah gbba: Me, an olive skin, every time someone says "cold, warm or NEUTRAL": oh shit, here we go again

Sophia J.Egan: I looked at the flow chart and completely agree with my category and hair colours. I have tried blonde to copper to warm reds and I am loving the ginger/reddish look atm! Thanks for the video!

Mara: I’m category B, neutral/warm skin with warm eyes and I think neutral-warm hair. So I’d go best with blacks, espressos, and reds. Which I can agree with cause I’ve dyed my hair black and magenta red (didn’t pick up completely with the red) before and it matched me really well.

Jasmine Gloss: Just went to the salon to color my hair and left almost in tears because she said she literally can only do brown! (my hair is darkest brown) determined to add some color in my life, I went to the one who always has the answers literally appreciate you so much xoxo

Nope Nahda: This actually helped a lot. I’ve always been confused because I was born with pitch black hair that became a platinum blonde. When I hit puberty I had dark brown roots with ashy brown/blonde highlights and now in my early 20’s I have this dark ashy blonde. My husband was convinced it was brown but literally NO browns matched. Yet I couldn’t believe it to be blonde since no one talks about dark blondes so I didn’t even know they existed. I now understand so much more about my hair, thank you so much!

Amanda B: Came for the hair education, stayed for the comedy. Love your personality girl!

Yazmin Lopez: I’m new to your channel and I have to say that I’m really enjoying your videos. They are both informative and fun. Thanks for making these and for making them fun. I have been doing my hair the same boring way for 40 years and I think it still looks great considering that most people my age have destroyed their hair by this point. Anyway I tried some of your advice and I’m very pleased. Thanks again.

Rosa Lee McDowell: OMG I truly have the same exact answers as you. I have Hazle eyes so neutral, my skin tone is neutral, also I was blond for many years and the older I got the darker it got so category W. And finally, I'm now a natural 5 or 6. With all that being said our hair types are completely different! I'm a 2a-3b. Your so informative! Thank you so much!

Raffaella Ricciardi: Inspired by this video (same skin tone, same colour, same porosity, with wavy/curly hair in progress) I skipped from blonde ends to a cold strawberry-golden-rose nuance on the whole hair, resulting in slightly lighter "pink" on the ends, but with a great coherence as a whole. I never thought I could abandon blonde hair ends, but i'm happy I did it. My face look much healthier and "alive", even if I have boring, mouse-like dark eyes, but now, with a BLUE makeup on them, they POP! And, more importantly, with no makeup I look fresher and younger. Thanks so much, I'm learning a lot.

Breanna Northrup: This is why I love you Mel. I went to a video with Brad Mondo on hair dying and he NEVER talked about redheads. I felt so not seen. But you’re a queen and you see us all!

Leigh Ann Fabries: As someone who voted to stay blonde in your Insta stories, I would like to rescind my vote and put it towards the darker. Your hair looks soooo good! 2020 might be the year that I finally try to color my hair (for fun). I'm a B, but I have some W strands that go blonde in the sun.

Em Goody: If I could have you do my hair, I’d probably faint. love the new looks you and Amanda have achieved with your hair colors!!

Cred X: Amazing! Gorgeous! Beautiful! What better way to discuss choosing the best hair colour for oneself than by displaying an absolutely PERFECT colour on yourself. Looks incredible, Mell

elle_lc: wow such a great informative video! thank you Mell! I am in the W category, now a level between 6 and 7 naturally, neutral skin tone and eyes like you :)

Michelle Zubrinich: I'm the same combo as you! Loooove the new colour. Love the blonde too but this is gorgeous for fall. My hair goal is to have you colour and cut my hair ❤️

Jailene Guzman: It would be so cool if we could upload our hair routines on Instagram and Mell and Amanda could make a video giving us tips! I think even if you can’t get through everyone, we can still benefit from seeing others style their hair! What do you think??

Lauren Nasuti: Thank you so much! This video was by far the most helpful at helping me figure out once and for all my skin tone and what color hair would look best on me. Turns out I’m exactly like you girl! Except my hair is very straight and not beautifully curly like yours. Jelly. I always had a hard time forgiving out my skin tone because when I look at my wrist I see blue/purple and green! Also I have hazel eyes, exactly like yours! My face I see a lot of red but I have rosacea which of course doesn’t help! And my upper body tans while it can burn as well, but my legs Do Not Tan! They only burn. So I’ve come to the conclusion I’m neutral and I’m definitely a W, just like you! Thank you, thank you thank you!!!

Alba Paez: You're such a saviour! I've had dark black hair my whole life and I'd love some warmth to make my curls pop. This makes me want to do it even more!

Malia Reynolds: I freaking love your personality. I just found your videos and I've been binge watching them for a week. Your videos are so educating. I got a a bunch of products you recommended and followed your tips and my curls are so much better in one wash.

Andi real: So, what if my skin is cool toned, my eyes are neutral (green on the outside, brownish copper on near the pupil), and my hair is 'W' (born platinum blonde but darkened to medium brown). Would I be considered generally neutral? Love your videos! They're so educational and interesting!

Arminda Maia: This color goes so good with her eyes

Sadie Villanueva: I’ve never been so happy to have a neutral skin tone! So many options

t.: I cannot thank you enough for breaking down tones!! You clarified to me that I'm neutral. I was always so conflicted!!

ALEXA NAVARRO: This is an awesome video! Currently going trough a life crisis = transformed my level 4 hair to a 9 level. This video gives me hope, the warmth in my hair will be the reason I shave my hair

Nicole: This is the best video I’ve seen describing hair color. You described everything sooo clearly. Thank you ❤️

Anna Xia: Yes, don’t color your hair black took me a while to figure out, my hair color is light brown but very cool toned, almost looks like light grayish, when I colored my hair black it made my eye color pop for a few weeks, but when my roots grew out I looked very very very bald‍ .

Bonnie Jackson: Your flow chart was AMAZINGLY easy and helpful, along with your descriptions

Inked Leo: I’m going next week to my stylist to get a completely new do and color(I’ve recently lost like 130lbs and need to update my look to match my new body!), and I wanted a color that actually came close to what your chart suggested. So I’m happy I’m on the right track! Now I just gotta decide what type of hairstyle I want which is the hardest decision. I’m a W with cool skin tones(at least I’m pretty sure I am), any suggestions as to possible cut or color???

Liora Sitelman: You’re stunningly gorgeous! My hair color was might brown as a little kid then turned medium brown as a teen and later turned very dark brown almost black without changing it by myself. The few times I’ve changed my hair to a lighter color ie my childhood hair color, it turns out horribly as I naturally have thick black eyebrows. Sometimes I dye it burgundy.

Makena Avichouser: Hey, Mell. I just have to say I absolutely love every one of your videos! I have watched tons of “hair color for your colors“ videos and this is by fair the best I’ve seen. Do you think you could make a video/chart for unnatural hair colors? (i.e. Blues, greens, etc...) Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and inner sunshine when we all need a little light in the darkness.

Muskan: B Level 8-9 Cool/neutral hair Neutral skin (medium fair) Medium thickness No contrast b/w hair and eyes Overall harmonious colour palette

mary_A: I was born with extremely dark 3a/3b hair (the darkest in my family). It looks black. I also have light brown eyes and pale (like ivory) skin. I was always called Snow White as a kid and I took offense to it because they said it in an insulting way but now I feel more confident in my appearance because of mel’s videos! Thanks Mel!

Adeena Hasan: Where's my "hair color changes under sunlight" squad?

eva T: You are very fun to watch and super informative! I can't wait to try out some color using these tips :) Also I LOVE your hair color on you.

MeanJean McQueen: That flow chart helped me SO MUCH! I know I'm a category S. Thanks, Mel!

Gena Miller: Hi Mel-Thank you for always explaining hair products, styles etc that make sense and make me laugh. Love from NYC, be easy Happy Halloween xoxog

Anna Hatfield: Love this, I don't have to feel bad about my natural hair color which isn't on trend nowadays thank you!!!! you're beautiful even with the dark hair that was suppose to be a NO

Abundance: This video was very informative. I had a feeling what colors would look good on me but this just confirmed it more, thank you so much!

quantumwombat: I learned SO much!!! I had heard about warm/cool tones before but I had no idea your hair color as a kid mattered! I'm a W as well! Thanks for all the hard work you put into this!

Teri Ehr: That was the most fun and informative video ever! Now I know why even coloring my hair platinum turns it red! or banana peel yellow. You are so engaging, natural and entertaining - what fun!!

Angie Pérez: Hi Mell, that color looks amazing on your curls!. What color did you use? I hade very damage curls but since I started watching your videos and applying the products that you recommend I have seen an improvement. My tone is in the “B” category and I have applied highlights many times and it has never look good. I know I’m not good looking but I will like to feel that I did everything on my part to look good.

Lesley Dudley: I really wish I could get my hair done by you!!! I have green eyes and light skin and naturally brown hair and I’ve gotten my hair dyed 3 times and each time it was awful. I went from natural to this red color, to an even brighter red to blonde.

Michelle Stratford: I'm a W for hair, with a lot of blond and red natural highlights in my brown hair. For skin I am the palest anyone can be with definitely a Cool undertone. This was fun! Thank you so much!

T D: This colour looks stunning on you!! Having neutral undertones really makes it hard to decide so I think I will colour my hair just like you haha (I have a lighter natural colour but I think it could work). It truly suits you so well.

Beth Brown: Love your videos. You are beautiful, and I love your curls!! I am trying to bring mine to their full potential! I have Aunts, Uncles, and cousins with hair as curly as yours! I am sure mine will be great! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!

Alexandra: This was EXTREMELY informative

Virginia Lopez: Loved this video! love your personality and how you explain all the details with a refreshing side of humor.

betty lagogianes: This was so informative, your delivery style is so natural and engaging, you look amazing....I really think you deserve to have a huge audience!! Thanks!

MissJellyAss: I'm having a really hard time determining what hair color category I belong to. I had light brown hair as a child and have had light brown hair throughout my life. It hasn't darkened with time and it's never been even near anything between the levels 1-3 as according to category B. However as mentioned it hasn't darkened with time either. Judging by the scale 1-10 my natural hair color is and has always been a constant level 6 which is considered dark blonde (!?!?), even 7 during the summer. But my hair still looks more like light brown if you ask me and everyone else whom I've asked. So does the tendency to get slightly lighter hair during the summer indicate category W hair color? Still the issue of not having darkened with time. Also looking back at child pics I noticed a lot of natural highlights in gold/copper tones, yet my hair appears colder rather than warm most of the time. I'm so confused! Side note: once when I tried bleaching my natural hair that had no dye on it bleached very easily and didn't get orange at all, not even yellow. It was quite ashy tbh. Whole different story on dyed hair though. Also my skin tone is very much neutral, as are my green eyes that shift back and forth from hazel with hints of amber in the center (just like yours), to Grey-ish blue-ish tones. Please help me determine my hair color category!!! I'm desperate!

Stephanie France: I just came across your channel and you're so informative! This is my first video of yours that I watched and you seem to have such a fun, entertaining, big personality so far and I love it!

KЯØ: Veins on right wrist: dark blue Veins on left wrist: light green Me: shit.

Katie schrock: Absolutely loved this! My mom is a salon and day spa owner but too far for me to go on a regular basis. I haven’t had the best experiences with other places! Lol but I wish I could go blonde blonde ‍♀️. Have lots of grey ugh. Only 38! Had since 20s. Anyways I’m pretty sure I’m an S. Was platinum blonde when I was a baby.

Annie Hanson: Your new hair color literally put the biggest smile on my face it looks so good! I cannot stress how much I love it. I LOVED the blonde but I also LOVE this look on you!

seth: im lovin your hair color its just so extra. it complimented well your eyes. loved your overall features especially your hair btw im category B who's not a fan of hair color but watching this made me change my mind. im planning to have my hair dark or medium brown to highlight the curls

Kaylee Paige: Ok, first of all. THANK YOU for making this video! You went into great detail, which is what I needed lol. I just have one question though. I've almost always had kind of like a golden brown hair color except for when I was a newborn. It was jet black lol. What category would I be in?

Debbie Avoux Studio: You are ADORABLE!❤️And this was the most informative video I’ve ever seen on hair color. Thank you! Yes please do a hair cut video too!

Mildred Romero: new subscriber! i love her energy and she still keeps it professional.

Stelina Kritsepis: Hi Mel! Thank you for all this help, you really helped me embrace my curls and love them! But... Could you please do a "how to BRUSH your curls " because it' s a taboo for all of us the curlies! Bye!!!

Andrea Hebert: So I have questions. My hair behaves like type W, but my hair actually got lighter since I was born. I was born with level 3-4 and it now ranges from 4-7. I think a lot of this could be from the sun, but it seams to have lightened instead of darkened sooo.

Melanie Headley-Blythe: Haven’t even got through half way and I am already entertained by your energy . Can’t wait to see end results.

Mirasol00: You are probably the first haridresser that I know to mention the difference between the tones of your hair, skin and eyes. Usually it is just like: " Your skintone is warm, so your hair is warm-toned, too". That was the first video that's really helpful to me, because I have warm toned but pale af skin, neutral light brown eyes with a bit of olive, and a greyish light brown hair (category w). It really helped that you didn't oversimplefy this. Thank You

Laura Graham: Great video! I accidentally died my hair black once (it was supposed to be "espresso brown," but fine, porous baby-haired brunette me ended up with black hair). With my pale skin and lighter brown eyes, I looked like Snow White got an office job. Had to change my make-up, jewelry and clothes - everything. Never again!

Marianne Demuysere: My natural color is between a 6&7. After watching you I believe that I am a neutral. I bought a warm amber brown #6. I probably should of gotten a neutral. I hope it still looks good. My hair does not dye blonde. It turns red. Thanks for your wonderful video!

Day D: You’re literally my new favorite YouTuber! Love the comedy and high level education! Subscribed!

Jill Honeywell: You look absolutely gorgeous!! Love the wealth of information and energy you provide!!

Yarih: This was so helpful! I am category W and almost colored my hair black blue which is more suitable for category B. I will make a more suitable choice now

Pattie Pepper: OMG! You are so funny!!! I LOVE your positive energy! Thank you so much for all the info and tips!

Christian Raul Arroyo: Thank God! FINALLY someone does not encourage poor souls with the idea that ashy tones are always the best. I am so tired of these videos with colorists starting out with comments such as 'how to get rid of those warm tones', 'how to achieve that platinum we all want' etc. I personally can not wait for this trend to stop and people simply listen to their own color palette instead of what is in.

Naseem Afzal: Love the video. The palette was on point for my cool undertone and warm eye colour. Do you have any tips on greying hair? Eg transitioning to grey or preventing grey hair

Sarah Asselmeier: I'm pretty sure I'm a category B-as a kid, my hair was so dark it was almost black with like, burgundy undertones(mom confirms). I grew up and my hair lightened to a deep brown with red undertones, but if I spend enough time in the sun I can still get to a mid-auburn. I used to get natural platinum highlights too, but it's been years since I've spent enough time in the summer not working so I honestly don't know what my hair does nowadays. All I know is that I'm a cool-leaning neutral undertone and I'm dyeing my hair burgundy for the first time soon. Very excited

Aura Wright Media: Well, I am an S and consider my skin very warm but I have the cool tone eye color. So in the past I've looked better with the tones that are listed for the cool skin. I've been very copper red and very platinum/ash blond and it looked great. For me it's more a matter of deciding if I want all the maintenance of those more striking colors or the lower maintenance warm tones, which grow out really well. Right now I am very platinum because I felt I needed more fun in my color, at least until I get sick of keeping it up.

Knowledge/wisdomwins-againstimpulsiveness: Awesome video! Very informative and fun to learn. Thanks!!

Ti Almeyda: Omg you are amazing. Thank you so much for your videos. This one helped me so much. I am trying to find a new hair color for me...always afraid of it looking terrible. can't wait to get some more tones in my hair...I have discovered I am in category W. oooh ya!!

catdog dogcat: This was such a cool educational lesson. I nailed my hair color from trial and error.

Eagles Wings: Hilarious, love your energy! I feel the embrace of all cultures in your voice and humor.

Jake S.: I'm a neutral skin tone with, W hair tone. Used to have reddish brown hair as a child it got darker and a bit cooler as I grew older. My brother had blonde hair and it got dark brown as he grew up. I found going too light or too dark from my natural hair colour looks really weird on me. But anything couple shades lighter either warm or cool looks really good.

syd: I had a super pretty caramel blonde/brown growing up, as I have warm olive skin. But since high school I've been all over the map. I highlighted it all throughout high school, bleached it and dyed different colors, i got back to my regular color and then a few months ago decided i want to go bleach/platinum blonde. Big mistake :( I've been in for two appointments and it's still mostly warm yellow... I wish i had just kept it the subtle brown it was... looks way better with my skin tone.

Tarafe: I’m an S :)) Platinum blonde as a child and and more of a 7/8 now. But always been blonde. This video was so fun to watch and so informative, thank you! ❤️

Beth Kowall: Hi Mell, was wondering if you could put up the colour chart for category R, I am a natural red head, cool tones, blue eyes and pale skin. I would really like to read the colour chart for category R, thank you I enjoy your videos and your patience in teaching us how to care for our hairs

Georgina Hagen Hnatiuk: Well, that was easy. I have all the exact same mixed skin, hair and eye tones as you. Except I am a couple shades lighter in W hair category. Thanks. You made this easy for me.

Amy Medeiros: I'm a W, with fine, wavy hair. I have only colored my hair twice in my life (plus highlights a few times) and it was ages ago. I'm seriously considering finally doing it again!

i like cats: When you’ve always wanted black hair but mel says it’s bad

Ammarah Patel: My brain: Get your hair dyed again My bank account: You look lovely with the new hair colour!!

Scarlet's Letter: This makes a huge difference. I have very neutral skin, like almost completely neutral so I can wear any makeup. I'm def an S, since my childhood hair was silvery white blond & my natural color now is 8 Ash Blond. I wish I had more flexibility in how I can wear my hair, but it just looks bad any time I get lowlights. Whether the stylist adds warm or cool tones it tends to look strange & artificial. Most stylists will try to add depth with a "warm lowlight" that's so popular nowadays, which unfortunately makes my hair look orange & my skin gray

mer rb: You look beautiful and thanks for this amazing content I've never colored my hair I'm 24 and I'm scared of the damage. I'm definitely gonna use your knowledge

mini1812: I believe I'm a W because my hair was a lighter brown when I was younger and it will go lighter in the sun. It's always been definitively (darker) brown though. My strands are mostly on the finer, easily damaged side.

Monica Hope: Mell, I'm new to your channel. I think you did a fantastic job. Your video was informative and entertaining. Thank you!

Neisha Hernandez: Yes!! I'm having a little trouble for what color I'm going to do. So this came just in time. ❤

Katelyn Crook: I'm a little confused about my natural hair color category. I was born with very dark hair, probably a 2 from pictures and videos I've seen from that time, but my hair was golden blonde like a freaking Disney princess until I was going into high school and started darkening naturally. My natural hair is now between 4-5. My hair has always naturally lightened in the sun to the point I was always asked if I had gotten highlights. I think I would be a Category W, but I'm not 100% sure. Please help...

The Nightingale: This video was amazing. I've had such difficulties determining what my hair should be as a color. But clearly, I'm a cold person ^_^ pale skin with blue veins, icy light blue eyes, and white hair as a child. Still very blonde. The problem is, I have a large forehead (my whole hand is needed to cover it), so if I have my natural hair, I look like Lisa Simpson, with no hairline. So I love contrast. Would you recommend darker hair on me or making it brighter?

My Meditation Space: This was actually really helpful. Thank you.
