Hair Color 101: How To Darken Light Hair - No Green!

Some hair coloring tips from a licenced hairstylist :)

1 - When going dark from light, make sure to 'fill' the hair or re-pigment with the missing colors (Orange) first

2 - Never use an ash colour to really darken light hair (or you'll get GREEN!)

3 - Use a demi-permanent hair colour instead of permanent (your hair is probably very porous and will easily absorb the colour)

Hey guys, it's Sally, I am back and I am dark hair it again. What do you think? What do you think? I thought I would do a quick 101 on how to darken light hair, because I just did it so I thought it'd be really cool to show you exactly how I got this look and what products I used and what kind of things you need to know. If you're going from light hair to really dark hair, so what do you think? First of all, do you like it? I feel better with darker hair. I think I look better with darker hair. I think I look healthier with darker hair. I prefer darker hair yeah. Pretty much so if you're, a new stubby, you haven't seen you this dark hair, surprise, it's turn old selfie. Then you're used to seeing me this way. So it's no big deal for you um, but anyways. Let'S get into the tutorial, so it's not actually tutorial, but I'm not actually gon na color, my hair, but I'm gon na show you exactly what I used and how I chose the color that I chose okay. So the first thing you need to know is that hair starts off with the three primary colors, so you've got blue red and yellow the three primary colors. When you lighten hair, the first color to leave your hair, is the blue, then what you're left with is the red and the yellow. That'S why? If you have dark hair like mine and you lighten the hair, the first color that you see is orange, cuz, red and yellow make orange. So that's why, when people lighten their hair when their hair is really dark, it looks Orange II and have to keep lightening it and lightening it and lightening it until it gets to like a pale, yellow, color and then what we use is called a toner to Tone, the yellow down of the hair, so we use something like a violet or an ash like a bluish tone to cancel out the yellow. So you get this really beautiful kind of white blonde. Okay! So that's how you get a nice neutral, beautiful blonde! Is you lighten the hair to the pale yellow and then you tone it or you lighten it until whatever level, and then you have to offset it with a color so to cancel out orange, you use blue to cancel out yellow you use violent okay. So those this is just color 101 for you right now, so when you're doing the opposite, when you're taking really light hair like a blonde and you're going to really dark, you need to redeposit or repavement your hair with those primary colors. So obviously, when you have really light hair you're missing that orange color right you're missing that corporate color. So then, you have to reap it that in your hair, before you actually go darker, otherwise you're gon na end up with a really bad greenish tone. And the reason for that is that, if you use a neutral kind of color neutral, has a lot of blue or a shiness in it. So you can't just put in an azure brown on on yellow hair cuz on light, yellow hair, you're gon na end up with green cuz, yellow and blue make green. So don't do that next, never ever ever put an ash. Colored Brown dark brown color in lightened hair, because you're gon na end up with green and it's gon na look horrible and getting green out. It'S just not fun because to cancel green, you need to use red and I'm talking like fire-engine coppery, your strawberry shortcake red. So you don't want to do that ever ever. Never do that. So what I did was I used a dark kind of gold, coppery tone on my hair and then I went and colored it with a color that I wanted. So the color that I wanted was the 3 N, which is a level 3. It'S pretty dark brown color and I used a neutral tone because I didn't want it to be too red or too ashy and the color line that it used was color Oz by gold. Well, I absolutely love this line. One of the things you want to consider when you're darkening, hair too, is figuring out what product line to use and then also figuring out what type of product do you want to use a permanent, a semi-permanent or a demi-permanent somewhere in the middle and demi-permanent, is Like the best option, nine times out of ten, if your darkening light hair, because the demi permanent is not as harsh as a permanent color would be, but it still has staying power that a semi-permanent may not have you may wash the hair may wash out of The hair, but the thing with light hair is that it tends to be very porous. It sucks out, color really quickly. So that's why, when you go darker, you may also want to start doing your roots. First, color all your roots, let it process for half the time say if it was a 30 minute process. You process it for 15 minutes, then pull it through pull the color through on your ends that are gon na soak up the color faster than the roots. Right because they're more porous and damaged and then process for the remainder of the time. So this is how you re color or repigmentation. So that's the lesson right there. People, but the color odds that I use isn't amazing. It'S an amazing day, your permanent. It doesn't have a lot of ammonia, so it doesn't smell, really bad and and use a developer, just as you would like regular peroxide for a permanent hair color, and this is the one that I use. I use the intensive line. I'Ve heard that this is really good. I don't actually know so. I can't tell you 100 %, but I spoke to the lady at the beauty supply store and she told me this is the best solution to use. If I want staying power with my color on school wall color, so I use the intensive lotion and I just put it in a bottle and use two parts of lotion. One part of the color. You mix it up in a bottle and you start doing your thing, so it was actually a pretty quick process. Pretty simple, pretty easy, so my question for you is: would you like to see a tutorial on how I color my hair because well obviously I've already colored it, but I can show you how I do my roots and how easy and simple it actually is. So let me know if that's making me interested in and if you have any questions at all any color questions, I can help you out just an FYI. I am a hair stylist, a licensed hairstylist and I am a licensed color technician. I did color after I was done my school thing and I got my license. I just did strictly color, so I'm fairly familiar with color, it's been a while, but I still remember a lot of the fundamentals. So if you have any questions at all, let me know - and I can answer them for you. Okay, you later peace out,

Maegan Haynes: This video was so helpful! Super informative! Thank you!

Jermeeth: This makes so much sense! My boyfriend, some time ago, decided to go blonde, and after about a week he decided to dye it like a brownish color, it was a realy red kind of brown, and his hair turned purple! XD Everything makes sense now! I missed seeing your videos Sally! You look great with the dark hair!

Jaqui Suarez: This video was so helpful! I just dyed my hair a bit ago and I am not too happy. I had a medium brown base with chunky blonde highlights which I do not like and wanted to go over them with brown because my roots are horrible, (my hair is naturally very dark brown. Almost black). I wanted to dye my hair a golden brown but it ended up making the brown parts of my hair look like a dark ashy brown and the highlights are an awkward ashy color as well. I mean it doesnt look too terrible but this video is very informational!

Sally Heart: It's really hard for me to tell you exactly because I'd have to see how fine or coarse your hair is in order to prescribe the proper developer you need, but typically I would do a 10vol for the red colour, and then do the brown with 10vol or 20vol right after I'm done shampooing, conditioning and drying my hair from the first red colour. (Some colourists like to skip conditioner when they are colouring the hair again, but I find it really evens out the colour and prevents it from grabbing dark)

1996vivian: I'm a new Subscriber and love this video! I was golden blonde and went copper. And as you can imagine my hair close to my head came out fine. But my ends, came out muddy. Can I do what you did to fix this? I use box colors. Beauty stores confuse me. And I never get the help I need. Thanks!

Elvis fan girl: Hello Sally,  great video.  I have level 5 hair naturally, but I recently highlighted my hair, kind of a bayalage way.  At the ends I let the lightener stay on a little longer so they are golden blonde.  The highlights are like golden copper and of course my brown underneath.  It does not horrible but I don't like it so I want to use a level 6N demi over the top and crown area then feather down toward the bottoms.  I am hoping it will look more ombre.  Then I was thinking of running a 8A demi for like not even 5 minutes through the ends.  What do you think?  Please help.  Thank you very much.

LadyG: Hello! Very informative vid. What is your take on bleach wash? I have black hair with caramel highlights. My roots grown out for over 8 months and decided to try to go darker to an all over warm brown. Someone suggested I do a bleach wash all over and color over. Now my hair is just a whole bunch of shades of brown and nothing matches and looks like a bad ombré job now. Any advice on how to fix this?

sabrena0345: Ok, I have a few questions! I want to dye my hair from a kind of almost beach blonde to a medium brown. my natural hair color is dark, ashy brown and my roots are showing. So I'm going to dye it a reddish color and then do the brown after. Would I be able to do both dyes in a 24 hour period? And what level developer should I use since my roots are about 4 levels darker than the rest of my hair?

Dano Mehner: Hey lady! Great video, thanks for all the information. Question: i have ALOT of grow out, my hair naturally is dirty/light brown. I have about 4in of root grow out and the rest of my hair brassy/bleached blonde. I need to go all one color, preferably medium brown. What its it exactly that i do to my hair first so that im not going to get that green/ash color? And is it something that i only apply to the blonde and not the roots (as far as repigmenting)?

Keia FNay: Very informative.

Sarah Freer: Hello, loved your video and your hair! As a natural redhead I am very confused as to how to darken my hair to a nice brunette color. I was told green tone cancels red but i am scared with how its has natural blondish highlights... Will a dark ash make my hair brown, or green? How do you dye natural red hair...will it even work?

MariniSol: Does the rule also apply to highlighted hair?

Nyssa: It is so nice to see you with dark hair again. ^^

Monica Morneo: so I have extremely blonde hair but i grew out my roots ( about 2" 1/2) would I color my roots (they're a deep chocolate brown) with the red as well or just the blonde and then color a lll of it brown?

Aleah Oseguera: I have naturally dark hair it's almost black and I recently decided to do ombré because it looked very nice and I wanted something more interesting well the lady who did it COMPLETELY ruined my hair. She colored my already dark roots a light brown which has now turned into a medium brown and the rest of my hair is a very uneven and light shade of blonde it looks absolutely terrible! I want to go back to my dark hair but I'm not sure how to do it at home since my roots and upper half of my head is a medium brown and the rest of my hair blonde. Please help!

ShiPolar's Life Bloopers: My hair was blue and now it is grey with blue tints throughout. Would I use a light golden brown first then a darker color over it?

Ria Dextre: Hey! i REALLY need advice, i bleached my hair yesterday in purpose to get blond dips, but instead it turned out in an orangy color, and i really want to go back to brown again, so can i just put a brown dye over it or do i have to put another color over it first??? since you said that for blond you need to get the "redish pigment'' first, but my hairs already orange so.. I REALLY NEED ADVICE, PLEASE! Thxx

🌼 Viksta 🌼: Hi, was wondering if you could help me...ive been colouring my hair brown for a few months now but my natural colour is dark blonde and whenever i dye it, my roots keep coming out lighter...i would like to go a light ash brown as i dont like to orangy tones on me...any advice would be great

Trail Heads: Heyy!  I have light blonde hair now..which has been bleached and toned.  I have some pretty bad roots growing in which are ash brown.  I want to dye my hair to a light brown (a little ashy) color.  I've had the green disaster happen to me in the past. What color would you suggest dying it first before I put in the final color?  And should the first step color be permanent, and then the final color demi permanent?  I want to dye my hair today, and I trust you know what you're talking about, so I'd really, really appreciate it if you could answer this today if you see it of course!!  Thanks so much!

Ana Leona: So I just dyed my hair blonde; and then skipped and went to brown with a box dye. It's looks brownish grey. What do I do? I need it fixed as soon as possible...

Victoria Anderson: Can you please help? I change my hair color A LOT & it's naturally about the color of yours in this video. I got my hair very blond from just bleaching no toning and then dyed it pink then a month or so later went over it with redbrown THEN went over that with cherry red.

Victoria Anderson: I then tried to go brown on one side of my hair but the dye would not even take so I had to bleach my hair twice and it was still stained pink! So then I dyed over it with a blue black and that faded to a horrible brown-green color. I want it a buttery blond now

lyts: can you put jet black dye on platinum blonde without it going green?

Destiny Jenkins: Okayy.. So My hair is pretty blonde(bleached). I wanna dye it brown without it turning green! What toner do I buy? I wanna go chocolatey brown color. So what hair dye boxes work the best?

DSY.91: Hi I hope that you can help me with this. 3-4 Days ago I went from a 3 (dark brown)to a light chestnut color...The thing is that I don't really like it and I kinda want to go back to my natural hair color. Is it possible to do that. It kinda is an inverted/reverse ombre, there is still a lil bit of my natural color between the middle and the end of my hair but very subtle while the top is this light chestnut. I'm going to the hairdresser to see what he says. What do you Think? Thanx!

keep bathwatr salty: Roots first and then drag too ends cause ends are more pourus

Chinaa. Dahl: I TOTALLY USED ASH BROWN AND GOT GREEN HOW DO I REMOVE IT :''''''(

emmahzification: you look better with dark hair, for sure

Carolyn S: Hi Sally I think you look better with he darker color/ Question for you though ...my hair is normally close to a Ash bought some dye from Sally's 6 and 7 mixed the two but it turned out more blonde and I used a 20 developer. It has only been a couple days so I really dont want to dye it again how can I get it darker also my daughter say it has a hint of orange in the sun...?????? I think it has more red which I dont like either. Help....Thank You.

mattersfingers: Any advice for someone who put light ash blonde over really bleach blonde hair and it's turned grey. I don't want to dye the ends again. will it fade out if it's permanent. I wante ombre hair so put the ash blonde at the top to mark it darker . The top was fine but the really bleached bits are grey/greeny. I'm annoyed :-(

Lauren Donoff: i want to do my hair myself.... i dont have the money to spend on going to a salon, i am a hairstylist as well... i dont do color.. i only cut!!! but i want to use schwartzkopf color... im just trying to figure out how i should fill it... what color or what product to use?

Bell Ad: OMG, please help i went to a hair dresser in my vacation in us. and she made this beautiful color, but the highlights is turning green, i have tried a violet shampoo....and it doesent help..please help me....should i color it to a warm brown?help help....:(

Fenady79 Kindayam: U said if ash brown put in light blonde it turn to green..so it mean i must put a bit red on the ashbrown right?
