What is up guys welcome back to another fun-filled episode of cartooning 101, I'm your host BJ Dell and in today's video, I'm gon na walk you through on how to draw cartoon hair for girls and women so said in previous videos. But if you're new, I'm using the iPad pro 12 point 9 inch first gen model along with procreate, the Apple pencil. But this is not a digital tutorial. It'S all about the basics and fundamentals of drawing. So if you don't have an iPad or a computer or a drawing tablet, just grab a piece of paper and a pencil follow along and keep watching all right guys. It'S go ahead and jump into the video today, cartooning 101, how to draw hair for women and girls, and I'm using the sketch ink shade brush. That'S part of my new brush set. The link is in the description below if you are using an iPad pro in procreate, but if you're using a pencil and paper just follow along as is or just use any of the brushes and procreate if you're following along digitally. So this is the template that I showed how to do in the first episode of cartooning 101. I'M going to be using this for today's episode. So if you haven't watched that - and you want to learn how to make this one, all the lines represent, go back and check out that video, because I've got a bunch of these pre-loaded in here to kind of speed up the process. I'M not going to be drawing all these out by hand. So if you watch the last episode, cartooning 101, how to draw hair for men and boys, I talked about first off this round part here of the upper portion of the head. This represents the cranium or the top part of the skull. This is kind of important because the hair itself grows out and away from the scalp and from the skull. So when you start to do your hair, you want to make sure that the hair doesn't sit directly on this line. That you're not using this as a guideline, because everything is gon na look really compact. It'S gon na look really smushed together. We don't want that. So we want the hair to actually come out and above there, so for this first one we're gon na go ahead and draw just a basic bob style haircut. So the first thing that we want to do is I'm just going to draw a line across here to kind of give us an idea where the bangs go. We'Re gon na have kind of short chop bangs on this one, and I talked about in the previous men and boys episode. If you are doing bangs, if you're doing a swooping, hairstyle, definitely keep in mind the eyebrow line and the eye line make sure that those don't get covered too much by the bangs unless it's on purpose, if you bring these down too far, it's going to start To cover up the eyes, of course, with women's haircuts, you're gon na possibly have that kind of one eye covered, look with the bangs think kind of like Jessica, Rabbit or if you're doing boys like a Justin, Bieber or emo. Look, you know you might have that swooping bangs, but just keep in mind how far down these go. Now that we've got our guideline for the banks here, I'm just going to of droppin some designs. Here'S basically like triangle here and then and kind of cut this into a more basic bang shape here, we're just kind of grouping these into kind of chunks that make up those bangs. So we've got a pretty good start there to the the overall shape that the bangs are gon na take from here, then, I'm gon na pull down some hair from this bang right here down into the front. To start this shape of the bob want to make sure that I'm kind of framing the face with these lines, and you see they're coming down kind of framing that in fortunately with this kind of hairstyle. I like in these videos to break everything down by shapes and hair, is really hard to do that, just because it is so kind of organic and flowing a lot of times and it's really hard to break it down into certain shapes. So this one it's going to be more, you know how to put the lines where they go, how to taper the line and so on and so forth. So stick with it and follow along and practice as I'm doing this. So the next thing I'm going to do here, the hair is gon na wrap basically around the back of the neck here. So we need to make these lines here to kind of show that that hair is coming around there and behind we're. Also going to add some extra stuff in there once we continue on a little bit further, just to kind of show that that is sitting further back and that's kind of one of the tips and tricks that will learn going forward. Now that we've got that done, I can go ahead and start to pull these lines up. I want to kind of angle these back and away so we're going to pull that down just tad bit further and pull these back in a way so that the hair can then start to move up here into the top portion of the head. And now that we've got those we'll go ahead and kind of start to pull them around now from here. Basically, it's almost gon na work like an aura like I said you want this to start out above that cranium part. So if we just kind of follow this circle around and then kind of bring it down a little bit more flat on this, so it's almost like an aura surrounding that top part of the head, and then I like to kind of usually have just kind of Like a sharper angle here at the side, so it's not just a perfect. You know round circle going around to come back up here too. You can kind of dent this in a little bit, so it's got a little bit more shape to it like so. That'S going to be the basic outline, the basic shape from here. We can kind of build up a little bit, so let me go ahead and let's go back down to our template layer here. Let me erase these parts that overlap, so we can get a clear view of what we're doing so, we'll just knock these out real quick. So that's covering the ear. So we won't see those we don't need those in there and we'll just get basically what we're working with here. Okay, so now, what we need to do is kind of start to build up this section here. The banks are the the bob that comes down. It'S really bland right now, so we can start to layer this up to do that. We'Re gon na basically follow this line down and around and then we're gon na bring it back up into kind of a thick chunk. So we're going to make this a little bit thicker down here and pull it up into a taper, so this is going to taper off here at the top and it's gon na make. This looks just like a thick chunk of hair. That'S gon na kind of build up the volume and the layers of this now from here we're gon na make another one of these behind. So we're going to follow this line back and up and then draw another line following that same direction back into the distance there, since this layer of hair is sitting number one kind of stacked behind and then also going off a little bit more in the distance. It'S going to follow up a little bit higher. That'S why this one comes up further about the key is here. I want to have this front line come up further than this back line, so this one will come up further in the taper. This one will come off a little bit shorter and then from here we can go ahead and erase that guideline, and this is going to kind of just curve up, naturally into the rest of the hair. So if we just kind of bring a curve there, that's gon na curve up into the rest of the hair there and then we'll do the same thing on this side. One key here to remember, like I talked about in the video for the boys and the men, is to remember that, of course, if you've got a barber, that's doing their job correctly or a hairstylist. Your hair should kind of match up from side to side, especially like if you've got like the the parts here, that would be like the the sideburns or so on and so forth. But the key is to not have everything, look like it's perfectly symmetrical people's hair and it's not exactly symmetrical, and you know you do need a little bit of just organic look to it. So I would say if you're using digital, do not go in and use the symmetry tool to get one side done and then just kind of trace that across the other it's gon na look like I said to mechanical: it's not gon na look right! So do your best to make sure that they're both about the same size but at the same time you know make them a little bit different. So it doesn't look like it's just traced from one side to the other, because that's not the look that we want. So go ahead and darken this in and around here, so we can see it a little bit better. There we go. They said this squared off here just gives it a little bit more attitude and doesn't look as plain so now that we've got that done. We can kind of start to go in and add some extra lines do some shadows so on and so forth. So let's go ahead down here. You'Ll see that we used. You know pretty thick lines here around for the the basic look of the outline. When I go in behind here, these are gon na be setting further back. So I want these to be line weight wise, a lot thinner. These are gon na, basically just kind of show that there's those strands of hair back here that are set in behind where it wraps and then from there. We can also go in and kind of shade in back here. Of course, if you're using you know pencils to do this, you can do this fairly easy with. You know: shading techniques, if you are using digital to do this, you can also go in using. You know darker colors, if you use the techniques that I show in some of the videos as far as shading and making an extra layer doing a layer of black and then dropping the opacity, you can do that as well to kind of darken in some of Those areas to make that look a little bit darker behind here, so whatever medium you're using just kind of play around with what works best for you and what works best for your style from here. We can also add in some extra shadows. So if we have the kind of light source coming in from this top right hand corner this kind of chunk here is going to give off its own shadow here back on that one. So we can kind of put a shadow in there kind of shade. In back along this, one you'll see it's gon na start to kind of build up the the kind of volume of everything it's going to give a lot more shape to the hair, and it's going to overall just look a lot better. So, let's keep kind of building these up same thing here with the bangs, the bangs, of course, going to kind of give off their own shadow and shape, but with these, of course, you've got the the shadow coming here in the hair. But it's also going to come down onto the forehead as well, so you'll want to get some shadows in there and then you know maybe some some shadows coming off here as well and as far as your technique for shadows. It'S totally up to you. What you want to use, sometimes you know just using a bunch of lines together like this and even doing you know, cross hatching, could work. It'S definitely up to your personal preference, your style so on and so forth, and then also once you go back in if you're doing digital coloring, you can use highlights as well to kind of block out some of these and make them pop a little bit more. So from here, what we can do is add in just some random lines throughout with these once again, not making them too thick. We don't want it to kind of fight. For you know the struggle of what's gon na be viewed first by the viewer. We don't want to see these as competing with the outer lines for the viewers attention. We just want these to be kind of thin and placed very you know, kind of sparsely around, not getting too many going on, but enough to where it gives. You know that appearance that there's some other strands of hair in there as well, so that is the the first one: how to do the bob haircut. So let's go ahead and turn these off and the next one. Here, let's do kind of like a longer haircut for this one, so longer hair style - I guess rather than cut, but let's let's go ahead and draw in some shoulders here, because this one's going to come down. The hair is gon na, come down behind and over the shoulders, so this one, I guess, would be more of style like I showed before in the mail video. What we want to kind of do with this is make sure that we pay attention to the hairline. So I talked in the mail, video about doing the hairline and when you start to kind of pull the hair back in a way. So, instead of having a swooping motion or bangs that fall down, if you have hair, that's pulled back or if you have bangs that are kind of pulled back and fall back around. That'S why you need the hairline. So if we just go kind of close to the top here and just kind of draw a line across here for the hairline, this is gon na. Allow us to kind of pull the bangs over top and show some of that hair below we're. Gon na know. Where that goes so, what we're gon na do here, starting from the center we're gon na pull out a line here, this is going to be the bangs coming up and around I'm kind of pull these off just kind of angled. I kind of like that. Angular, look when I do my drawings just adds a little bit more style. It'S personal preference. You know find out what works for you, what your style is and we'll talk about that later too, in some other videos of being able to find your style and how you can do that and we'll just pull this back up and around. So that's going to be that right hand side coming over and then this bang is going to kind of pull itself up and around you'll see this lot and kind of like Disney type of illustrations. So this bang will come here and kind of pull it back down over the face here. So you can see that where we did the hairline that's going to kind of show these lines tucked underneath. So that's why we needed to do that to have that hairline there. So we knew exactly where that was coming into you, and then we can pull off from this side here and kind of pull this down and around, since this is kind of setting over further to the left. It'S going to have more hair pulled back and over to the right, so this one's gon na kind of puff out a little bit more on this side and it's going to kind of come in a little bit closer on this side. So that's another kind of idea or technique to keep in mind is what side is gon na? Have the greater volume of hair? It'S all going to depend on that part and then speaking on the part from here we're just gon na kind of pull this part down and around and kind of work. This hair in and we'll have this coming. Oops have this coming down into a pretty nice swoop right there then, from here we can once again kind of throw in some lines here. This is going to be the where the background is or the the shaded part. So that's the the overall look of the hair: let's go ahead and darken everything up, so we can kind of see it a little bit better. Once again, I'm going to oh, no, I'm not because I'm on the same layer, how about that I'll, try to get in here a little bit! Maybe we're gon na erase some of these overlapping sections. But I don't know if it's gon na work, just because I don't want to erase too much of what we already have done. Essence get what we key in here. That'S that's good. It'S actually not too bad. So let's go ahead and darken this up now. So we'll start here with this section and go ahead and pull this around once again, just kind of coming in with this part down here get this the right color there we go this up, just gon na come down and around and swoop down there, like, I Said this is that hairline here, so all this hair is going to kind of come out of this section here, kind of tapered off underneath like that, that's why we needed to put that hairline in there. So we knew where all that was coming. We kind of make it thicker here, so it kind of shadows itself as it's pulling out they're all wines kind of come out from that same place from here. We can pull this out and around a little bit sketchy here coming like so and pull another one. There, over top of the ear as well that ear in there - okay, not from this one. Once again, these are going to be the kind of outline, so we want them kind of heavier starting out heavier line weight coming down and around as they come down. We can kind of thin out the line right here on the backside if we need to since it's set actually in the hair there and then same thing over here, we can just kind of pull these out and around. If you want to overlap lines here, we can do that too, to kind of build up some volume. So if we pull this down and then this one instead of doing this perfect line connected, we can kind of pull this out and around like that, so it overlaps right there. You can build volume that way as well, just by pulling that down and around like so and then from here we can kind of start to add in the rest of that back section and get this darkened in. So it doesn't look so off when I use a you know, different layers here like this, and you know, try to do stuff fairly light on the sketch process here and then it's still part of the design like this. It just overall looks off when you kind of connect everything together so now that we've got that let's go ahead and start adding in those lines like we did previously like. So we're just going to use those kind of sparingly coming up we're going to kind of build these up. This is going to be that back section that kind of sits back behind, and then we can use these lines like this one here to kind of show us where we're gon na shade at so that's going to be kind of where that back section is so We'Re gon na start shading from there over get the right amount here. So we're going to shade in this part here like so and then same thing here, everything's pretty much gon na fall behind this one here. So let's do another line here and then kind of do our thinner lines around and then you can kind of shade it back here as well. I wan na make those a little bit darker, since I did on this other side like that, okay and then, like I said, just going back through here kind of pulling up different lines as we come down and around to give that appearance of the hair coming Around I don't like to go too crazy, like I said with these lines, so use them sparingly and then a lot of stuff. Like I said you can do just once you go in with the the shadows and the highlights, and even the colors you can kind of start, adding in some different textures and some shine to everything. Just by you know, adding in like some highlights here that you could do on the the part area right there, how that all breaks out. So that's just basically a quick and easy way to do long, hair, except with these they're cartoons. So don't worry too much about getting everything: 100 % realistic and perfect with cartoons. Definitely the you can get away with. You know a lot less work than what you would doing. A 100 % totally full blown photorealistic portrait. So definitely keep that in mind and it kind of gives you some some fun leeway to to kind of push stuff and try different things. So that's it for that one! Let'S go on to the next one here and this one we're going to talk about doing just like ethnic type of hair style, African American in this one I I love doing this hair style. So much there's. You know different ways that you can do it and incorporate it, but this technique is a lot of fun to do. It'S super dynamic and just kind of full of energy. So let's go ahead and I'm actually going to start this one with doing some basic shapes. So I want to get the the overall shape of the hair in here and the way it's going to come and once again doing shapes like this. I'M not using this to actually go through and trace. I do not want to use these circle shapes to trace, or these ellipses to trace, I'm just using this more than anything to get the overall shape that I want out of the hair. So I like to kind of do stuff like this to build it up and then use that as my guide lines to go off of so that's going to be my basic shape, like I said not using that to trace I'm using that as my guide. So I'm gon na go ahead and start to kind of darken this and I'm gon na have kind of a part here, so we'll start to come down off of there. Now the key with doing hair like this is really getting that nice, like swirly spiral. Squiggly look and with this it's definitely a trial and error method has a lot to do with being able to adjust. The pressure of you know your strokes and get a lot of different line weights. So you'll see, as I'm doing this, I'm kind of just pressing harder and then letting up and pressing harder in certain areas and letting up. Because I really want this kind of squiggly line weight to come in and it starts to build up and have you know a lot of kind of value to it? It'S adding a lot of volume to the the hairstyle and it's adding its own shadows too, which is really cool. So if you kind of watch the technique as I do it and then coming around the top here to kind of want to do the same thing - and I don't want it like, I said to be perfect - I kind of want to have this really fun. Squiggly natural hairstyle and said this one is, is just so much fun to do and you can get a lot of really cool looks out of this by kind of going in here too, and doubling up those lines like we did on the previous one. You can build some volume there as well and just doing just some fun little shapes around here. You get a really really cool. Look like I talked about too in the previous one, with the last one in the mail boy Amen, video talked about doing that hairline and kind of building up off the hairline, so you're not tracing that perfect hairline. We'Re gon na do the same thing here in the part, I'm gon na come in really thick with the lines here to pull out and they're gon na kind of work in the appearance of having this line here for the part, because they're all gon na kind Of be touching, so this parts kind of working itself in there just because of the way that we're doing this here. So you can see, I'm not actually drawing that part. So much as I am letting the lines themselves work into that part and it gives a really nice natural look to it. This can be used. Also, you know down here coming out of those overlapping sections. You can bring other lines there and then, as you're starting to build up from the bottom. Here, you can use the same kind of technique to kind of build up. Some kind of spirals down here start to build up that volume and the shape of the hair, and I said this one is just you know so much fun to do. You get a really cool look out of this just by using this technique and it's some really cool effects out of it. Now, when you go in to actually color this in or shade it or so on and so forth, you can also get the same. Look too just by going in with highlights or lighter colors, and let's say this was a white here. You would just be able to you know. Do these same things here to get that highlight, look and kind of give it that same body that same shape that you've got right now so play around with this. Of course, this can be used and a lot of different hairstyles the technique. You know you could go more of the the perfect, rounded afro. Look, you could go in with kind of pulled to the side and and do braids down the sides as well. There'S a lot of different possibilities with this, but just keep your wrist loose to get this effect and just kind of like I said just do that squiggle let up off the pressure back down so on and so forth. So you can get that overall, look and then go back in and do the you know the the shading and shadows to kind of hold up all of the the different areas that you need to. Do it like this to give that even more volume and shape a lot of cool possibilities with that? Alright, so that is it then for cartooning 101 how to draw women and girls hair, alright, guys, that's it for today's videos. Always thank you for watching. I appreciate it if you like today's video to make sure you give it a thumbs up subscribe to the channel if you haven't already and hit that bow for notifications. So you get alerted when I post new videos and speaking of new videos. Next up in the series, I think we've kind of run the course with drawing all the different heads and all the different information we need for heads in the cartooning series. So there's something I missed or something more. You want to see. Let me know, but before we start putting everything together with the body, we need to get the rest of it done. So I'm gon na do feet next. I'Ve done a previous video about hands already. So I don't know if there's really a need for another hands. Video because haven't watched that one jump back check that one out and if there's something else you want to see with hands. Let me know - and I will do a specific cartooning 101 for hands as well.
