A lady asks what would happen if Extra Strength Rogaine (minoxidil 5%) which is labeled for men, is used by a woman. She adds that it says it is dangerous on the packaging, and not for use by women.

New York hair restoration specialist Amiya Prasad, MD reviews this question in this video, where he discusses how minoxidil works, and why a stronger formulation may not mean better results, and details how he stops female pattern hair loss:

0:55 - Dr. Prasad’s background training, and his founding of a non-surgical alternative for hair loss for men and women

1:17 - Dr. Prasad’s experience with minoxidil for men and women, and finasteride for men

1:35 - How 95% of hair loss cases are pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), which is a progressive thinning of hair until the hair disappears completely

2:06 - How minoxidil can help manage hair loss by prolonging the growth cycle of thinning hair, but it does not stop hair loss progression

2:27 - How 5% minoxidil is the FDA approved dosage for women, and Dr. Prasad finds this concentration adequate

2:46 - How Dr. Prasad has also combined higher percentages of minoxidil, retinol, and other agents for custom formulations

3:02 - How Dr. Prasad has virtually eliminated the need for minoxidil in his practice because of Hair Regeneration treatment, which is more predictable and far more effective at stopping and reversing hair thinning

3:15 - How Hair Regeneration works using extracellular matrix and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stop progression of hair loss, reactivating hair that is not growing, and make hair that is thinning grow thicker

3:50 - How Hair Regeneration has achieved a 99% success rate in treating female pattern hair loss in Dr. Prasad’s practice, an improvement from the over 80% success rate when they were treating other female hair loss causes

4:30 - How most patients see improvement within 12 to 18 months, with only one treatment needed, a second treatment in the second year for a few patients with advanced hair loss

4:49 - How Hair Regeneration is an alternative to just stronger formulations of minoxidil, which can be prone to scalp irritation

5:14 - How minoxidil was originally a hypertension drug, which had the side effect of hair growth, so it does have value

5:26 - How Hair Regeneration patients stop using minoxidil after treatment

5:49 - How most of Dr. Prasad’s female patients usually stop using minoxidil because they didn’t find enough benefit from it, especially when applied twice daily

6:25 - How minoxidil does have a role in hair loss treatment prior to treatment like Hair Regeneration

Thank you for your question You’re asking question about using minoxidil extra strength for men and is it safe for women and, I am sure, it’s for your problem, you’re dealing with which is most likely female pattern, hair loss.. Well, I can certainly give you some guidance with this question. I’m a board, certified cosmetic surgeon and a fellowship trained, oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and I am also the founder of Trichostem™ Hair Regeneration. Centers a procedure we developed in our practice as a non-surgical alternative for hair loss for men and women.. So I certainly have a lot of experience with the use of minoxidil. In this country. Minoxidil and finasteride are the two drugs that are FDA approved for men and minoxidil is FDA, approved for women. Now, hair loss, which 95 % is referred to us familial and also called androgenetic alopecia, is basically progression of thinning hair.. The hair starts at thick and eventually as it sheds it grows in, and it gets thinner and thinner and continues to thin until it stops growing all together and the area becomes smooth and its only skin.. So minoxidil has certainly have role in the management of hair loss, but it’s important to understand that it does not stop. Hair loss does not stop the progression.. In my experience it appears minoxidil basically prolongs the growth cycle of thinning hairs. Now in this country. Currently, there is an FDA approved of 5 % foam Minoxidil for women and, from my experience, 5 % is adequate for its purpose. Now we have certainly tried compounding minoxidil and combining higher percentages of retinols and other agents to help improve the topical treatment. But what we have done in our practice is basically eliminate majority of the indication for minoxidil, because we have developed something called Hair Regeneration. With Hair Regeneration. What we are doing is we are using a material called extracellular, matrix, (, ECM ), combined with your own blood. A part of your blood called platelet-rich plasma, (, PRP, ), And essentially, what we are doing is what you want to try to do with minoxidil, except we are doing something more.. What we are able to do is stop the progression of hair loss, reactivate hair. That is not growing, as well as correct the hair growth cycle. So then, instead of thinning, the hairs actually grow. Thicker. Now for women. In our practice, we have achieved more comparably 99 % success.. Now this is something that has evolved over years. Where for women we initially had numbers like 88 % success, but what we did with time, we basically limited who we treated to just female pattern: hair loss and eliminated the types of patients who have other problems, such as chronic telogen effluvium.. Now what that means is that, within 12 to 15 months, most of our patients, both men and women, will see significant improvement with this treatment, which often is a single treatment.. Sometimes there is more than one injections separated by over a year, but in essence, I think that there is opportunity to consider alternatives. Besides just thinking stronger minoxidil.. One of the challenges we had is that we would encounter with higher strength. Minoxidil was scalp irritation and patients. Just didn’t want to continue using something that is causing scalp to be irritated.. Remember that minoxidil was originally used for hypertension for high blood pressure.. In fact, the effect was seen: hair growth, so I’m not saying it doesn’t have value, but for most of our patients who use minoxidil once we Hair Regeneration treatment., We had them stopped. But to going back to answering your original question as far as extra strength is concerned and from my perspective, 5 % minoxidil for women is adequate.. As a side note, I would say most of our women who we see in our practice, who have tried Minoxidil in the past and stopped using Minoxidil, because they felt it wasn’t really doing much for them.. You know it’s one thing to try to hold on to the hair and it’s kind of a weird uncertainty, whether or not the minoxidil is effective. And for many patients they just feel like they are not seeing a difference to justify the twice daily use of Minoxidil. As recommended by the many manufacturer, but still I personally believe that there is a role prior to someone having a treatment like Hair Regeneration and again, I think that if you want to use 5 % minoxidil, I think that would be adequate. And learn more about Hair Regeneration and find a practitioner who offers this type of procedure learn more about that as well.. So I hope that was helpful. I wish you the best of luck and thank you for your question.

GirlCami: These videos are so informative and greatly appreciated. When having generalized diffuse hair thinning & using the 5% strength labeled for men's use, the directions of course cater to men saying to apply to the normal top/back balding spot for men in a certain amount. But for women, in order to get it all over the scalp where the hair loss is, it takes much more in amount. Is there anything to be worried about in using more than recommended? I actually use the liquid strength with a bottle hair comb (normally used for hair dye application) in order to quickly use it at night, and then use the foam for daytime use b/c it is not as messy but it takes longer b/c you still have to part and try to make tiny rows of foam along the scalp and disperse enough that you feel like you are getting a large amount of your scalp covered and not just taken up by your hair. I am still using this related to chronic telogen effluvium. I have always had an oily scalp, and it does help some with oil control too. At times, it has felt irritated, but not bad and not often. If there is a better process, please enlighten me. Someone should invent something easier for women as far as application process and direction. A video related to this would also be helpful. On a side note, how is chronic telogen effluvium differentiated diagnostically from the others. Mine started many years ago after non-aggressive weight loss. It ebbs and flows but has never gone away. But my hair fallout always has the little white bulb intact on the tip coming from the scalp. Is that you know? Just wondering. Thanks in advance.

A Navarre: Hi. Firstly, I wanted to say great videos and great information. I am in my late 20s, and over the past decade have experienced a tremendous amount of shedding in hair to where the thickness in hair is approx less than half of what it used to be. I had a biopsy done a few years ago that confirmed androgenic alopecia. I have not taken any medications to help with this. With the PRP+ACell non surgical treatment, what results have you seen with females in this age group who have androgenic alopecia? What would you constitute as successful results for females in late 20s early 30s with androgenic alopecia who opt for this treatment? I think I saw in one of your videos that the male patients had almost 90+percent success rate, but what are the success rates for females with this condition? Also, what side effects would someone like me experience after this treatment? Is there any shock loss involved? If there was, how would it be treated? I would hate to lose more hair after a treatment. Would the treatment be applied all over the scalp or in one specific area? Finally, and I am sorry if this was answered somewhere else, what is the price or price range expected for this treatment? Thanks in advance!
