Jennie: Grombre Trend Has Women Ditching The Hair Dye

Four women discuss the reasons they are growing out their gray hair, and how to do it successfully.

Good afternoon everyone. Thanks so much for joining me. Today., I'm Jennie Montgomery. Welcome to another half hour of information to help you make the most of your time to make informed decisions and to keep up with goings on around Greater Augusta.. Today, we start with a cool trend in hair color, and it begs the question is gray: the new black [ Announcer ], More and more women are saying goodbye to dye and hello to their natural silver, hair, color., Lorraine, Massey, a stylist and author of Silver Hair Is on a mission to launch a new movement to inspire women to let their natural hair shine, through. You're, not letting yourself go! That'S for sure, you're, just letting go. [, Announcer, ] Hair goes gray when color producing cells stop producing pigment. Scientists don't know exactly why. Some people go gray early, but genes play a large role.. After 12 years of dyeing, her hair Fishkin decided to accept her silver tresses.. I get compliments every day., Sometimes I'm a little ``, Okay enough''. It just really makes me who I am you know.. I love the brightness of it.. I think it just matches me really. Well. [, Announcer, ] Celebrities, like Jamie Lee, Curtis and Helen Mirren, were some of the first to go full silver, but young girls like Pink and Lady Gaga, have followed suit. We're talking about now. For the last five years, the silver trend has been going on and I'm amazed at how many women actually look really great, with silver hair., Kathy, Wideman and Donna Hall are my guest right now and Kathy. You and Donna both have gone through you're, going through the process and you've gone through the process, and I just wonder, could you relate to that. These women aren't letting themselves go they're, letting go. Yeah it's very freeing. It was just very freeing.. My hairstylist said ``. You just need to do this., Just let it go embrace it and let it go.''. I said `` You're telling me that ?'' She said `` Yeah, I'm probably going to lose a good customer, but just let it go''. Of course I had illusions. It was going to come in like Barbara Bush, beautiful you know., So it was kind of a shock not to see it come in like that.. You know what I mean, But it's been very freeing. I love it and people comment.. I'Ve never had any comments on my hair. My whole life ever. [, Jennie ]. Like the lady said in the story everyday, she said people commented on it.. Nobody ever said: ,'' Your hair looks good'' ,'', Who does your hair ?''? Nobody until it went gray. Tell them what you said about the drive-through.. Oh my gosh, I went through there to get a cup of coffee and the little girl was making my coffee and another one was flying by the window and she goes ``. Oh my gosh. I love your hair color, who did it for you? I want that color''. I said `` God'', (, laughter, ). God did this. You know., That's just your natural color.. It'S my natural color. [, Kathy ] That we're just kind of conditioned to hide.. I'Ve done the reds and the magentas and the merlots, and this summer in May, when I saw the pictures from my daughter's high school graduation, I said ``, You just look stupid'', That's what I felt like because you're trying to be somebody that you're not - and I Said ,'', You just need to let it go''. I don't know if this is in the mid-40's type thing for me, but it's been a whole process of body, positivity and kind of trying to find myself.. As my children get older and move out of the nest. I'M trying to focus on who I am, and that was ditching a 25 year addiction to the dye, bottle. ( laughter, ), An addiction to dye., An addiction to the dye bottle, and it was fun and it looked good and then just all of a sudden. It just I don't know if it was a hair health thing or just an in my mind thing it just didn't ... Or you just get tired of doing it. And tired of doing it and the maintenance, and it just wasn't, staying well anymore.. If you know anything about hair dye, it wasn't staying well. Relating to that too, you feel like how long can you get away with that. You're, a certain age and they're ,''? You don't have those blonde highlights in your hair. That isn't your hair''. You know what I mean It's kind of one of those things.. How long can you get away with it Right. So you're both saying that, for you there's a big part of it that just has to do with authenticity. Yeah., And you just get tired of making that hair appointment, keeping it up and it never turned out the Same twice because your hair isn't like that., You can't put just stuff on your hair and expect it to turn out the same, even though they use the same color, because your hair is changing.. But did you just let your hair grow and start cutting off the colors at the ends. Yeah I did., And so you went through lots of roots showing.. That was a little weird, but the thing for me was that my hair was lighter., So it wasn't drastic that demarcation, line. [ Kathy ], I'm going to have that., But it wasn't quite as drastic for me, but it was still like you'd look in the mirror And you'd go ,''. Ah, you got bad roots going there girl bad roots''. Now, do you have any kind of rinse on yours, or is that just your hair, [, Donna ]? This is just it.. I mean Donna, it's beautiful.! It is just a silver silver color.. I still got to tell you: you can go by a mirror and you go `` Whoa''. I mean you still see yourself the way it used to be, and then you see that gray-haired lady and you go ,'' Hm wasn't quite ready for that today''. But then someone will say something nice. Yeah, but look at all this look at all this.. Well, I appreciate you saying that, but you still have to deal with the mirror. [ Jennie ] You're, not your grandmother as a gray lady.. No, but you still have to deal- I've, seen a lot of pictures on social media of women who are either in the process or who have like Donna gone through the process, and it's helps me.. It'S almost just like. I look just to give me a little encouragement.. It helps not to talk about it. Either. If people say ``, Are you ...''''? No, I'm embracing it'', So it helps not to go on a local talk, show and talk about it. That'S what you're, saying. ( laughter ), Pretty much thanks for the opportunity.. I am going to have encouragement. I know. And now you have Donna as like your lifeline to hang. Out. Call me when you get weak. Call her at that moment when you're in the drugstore walking down the hair, color aisle.. I know I've told my family and I've told everybody. I work with get used to seeing it up. As long as it's long enough to wear it because it's real curly., You kind of have a point too. When it gets to a certain point, you're going to go ,''. Oh I'm good.'', I'm getting it. Alright! Well, we want you to stay with us, because when we come back a beauty expert shares tips to help. You grow out your gray, hair and resist reaching for that dye. in hair color, not coloring.. It'S called Gone Gray and it's about wearing your natural silver locks. Proudly, as we see Donna Hall on the end here doing with hers. She's grown her hair out. Joanie Lamb right beside me, is the owner of Joanie Lamb Salon on Broad Street.. She and Coco Nikki are with us today, along with Helen Johnson and Helen, is in the process of growing out her gray. Joanie. This is something that you're seeing in your salon as well., Oh absolutely., I'm having people coming in and saying ,''. You know I really want to have a change happening with my hair. What can I do ?''? So then? That'S where I come in and share with them. There's many different techniques that we can do.. First of all, we can go radical.. We can just cut your hair off and go short short short, or we can do some low lights.. First of all, we can take the hair and completely blonde it out or blending it so that the colors will get lighter and then we'll put toners. On top of it., So you can do different colors in the toners to match the complexion of the personality. So from there they'll start seeing a nuance of themselves and when they finally look at themselves, they say ,''. Oh, my goodness, gracious'' such as Ms. Donna here. How her color is absolutely gorgeous. Through the whole process of trying to get from point A to point B. That'S the transition. You have to go through. Now for Kathy here. What we would be doing with her hair is that we would take it and do some highlights to it and then from there we would go ahead and put some other toners on top of the highlights, and then the process will just let it grow out. If that's what she chooses to do as well., She has naturally curly hair, so it'll be so beautiful as it starts to grow out anyway, because your curl consistency will be even more even and precise and bouncy and you'll just be like so ravishingly happy. You'll, be Like ``, Oh my gosh, why didn't I do this way before ?''? That'S because she won't be having the damage from the chemical of hair, color. Yes., So her hair will take on a different texture.. Yeah it'll have a different texture. With Helen here, she's already starting the process of letting her hair grow out, and it's absolutely pretty.. It'S beautiful beautiful., Her hair's, going to have like a silver tone to it. Helen, has also expressed that she might be at her wits. End with trying to grow it out.. Well, you know what one thing there's, also wigs that you can put on your hair in the meantime, if you want to do something kind of fun., I mean so many different performers wear wigs on their hair to go through that process, but I think, with your Hair, your hair is also very naturally curly and you'll, be surprised how pretty it is. As the color starts to grow out and just let the natural- Helen you've got inches grown out., You have got inches grown out.. I know I'm just tired of it.. I think that you're going to be really happy with the process. When you see it completely finished and there's so many wonderful people today that are doing their hair., I mean look at Helen Mirren. She's got her hair natural. Jamie Lee Curtis of course. She's- A little easier for her because she wears her hair, so short., Oh yeah.. So that's one thing: just cutting it., You know when it's short, it doesn't have as much as say: Helen's hair is longer and Kathy's is longer.. I have a client, her name is Mary Beth, Parichi and she's. A Jamie Lee Curtis look-alike and people are always ``. Oh, my God, there's Jamie Lee Curtis'' and I have her hair radically short like that.. It'S so awesome. I love it.. It has that Jamie Lee, Curtis flair to it., Also well Pink, is going more that color but you're, seeing so many different people now, because it's the trend and people are just looking and happy with the different tones that they're putting into the hair., We saw a Little video and the stylist in it said ,''. These are not women who are letting themselves go''. What would you say to that? I'M like `` Right on'', because what you're doing is you're coming into the salon. You're, still getting upkeep to getting your hair, trimmed and you're getting conditioning treatments and if they wanted to do followups by putting different toners on their hair to enhance their natural gray hair. They can., Such as with Donna's hair, and I think that's just really. Pretty. I'm going to get Donna in a purple, rinse. Donna. You could have shocking violet hair.. It would work. ( laughter ), But I do see that it's not going to be the less or the stopping of them coming into the salon or they're not going to keep themselves up. They're still going to be beautiful, women. They're, just a different stage of their Life and embracing that. Embracing that yeah.. So that's where the natural beauty comes through and you're feeling happy and when the soul is happy, it radiates with outside. You're right. Joanie. Thank you so much for your advice.. I appreciate it. Donna Helen Kathy, thank y'all for sharing this with our audience today. Coming up next on Jennie. It is happening this week, Black Friday shopping, madness., Don't go away; we've got a warning about scams and other tricks to get your hard-earned money.

Europa 17: I could relate to everything these ladies said. Eight months in, no chemicals, money and time saved, no more worrying about gray roots back within weeks. Seeing those women on Grombre Instagram convinced me to ditch the dye.

Uncomfortable Truth: I decided to stop dying my hair at 48yrs old, at 62 it is so BEAUTIFUL! I get so many compliments. My mother went grey very early back in the 60's when it was not really fashionable, but she looked gorgeous and I am fortunate to have the same silvery grey. Lots of comments from men! Grey is definitely the new Blonde!

Life tobelived: I had the same reaction as the one woman about color. One day I looked in the mirror and didn't recognize myself. I was born a blonde, then became a dirty blonde with gray and then I just kept coloring except when I was pregnant. When I stopped coloring I had been coloring my hair a brown color. I would get roots every 2 weeks which I think is more aging than the gray hair.

Cin Ma: I am 3 months in And I love the color I see coming out. I am so excited for it to be all grey. The lady who colors my hair is the only person against me going grey Bc she says I am too young. But my family and friends all love how it’s looking. Take care ladies. Silver rules.!!’ Stay safe

LMB: My surgeon ( former husband) said; "No wife of mine, will have grey hair"!..He ditched me at age 50 ( I was still coloring my hair) for a 25 yr old blonde nurse!.. He got BIG, he went bald...lost his job due to a vision issue.. I am 65 yrs old, grey and FREE!

Wendy Muir: Barista at Starbucks: Ooh I love your hair. People pay a lot of money for that color. Me: Mine was free. It just took 50 years to process.

Life tobelived: I was lucky that my young hairstylist was on board with the transition. She gave me some highlights to help me transition and now I'm almost done. I have to be honest I color my eyebrows because I'm a bit lazy to wear make up and if I don't have any color on them I would look like I don't have any eyebrows. I made the decision when I was 56. I'm so glad and even though it was difficult and it nicked my self esteem a bit during the transition my hairstylist and the other hairstylists in the salon gave me a lot of support through the transition. I am still the only one of my hairstylist's clients who has transitioned so far but she did a really good job taking me through it.

Renegade therapist: I love what she says at the beginning: "You're not letting yourself go, your letting go..." I will use that! I am 64 yrs old today, a natural redhead and started dying my hair close to natural color when it started going gray years ago. I have this tremendous urge to be authentic and I have not colored my hair since before Christmas. I now look like a calico cat! LOL But I am truly excited to see what it evolves in to, my mom was also a natural redhead and hers turned a beautiful kind of golden/silver color. I have to admit it is a bit hard to "not be a redhead", it is so much of my identity. BUT hey I'm still a redhead underneath, right? LOL Bonus, for some reason my hair is turning curly which I always wanted, and the natural hair is shinier and not as dried out. I have a top layer that is like "fuzz" from the years of dyeing! Wish me luck ladies and I wish you all the best on our journey together!! I feel inspired!

Connie Hall: Enjoyed your show. I too am letting the hair dye scene disappear. My main complaint of the upkeep is when I’m visiting my son in Europe, there is no time to keep the dye job up not to mention who would I go to especially not speaking the language in Budapest, Hungary where my son and family live. Covid19 pandemic has given me the push I needed to follow through of this journey. I’m 67 years young and really don’t feel like sitting in a salon chair for two and half hours anymore. I have dark brown hair and I would get highlights to lighten up around my face but by the third week I would already see a reddish tone coming out and I was never a red head. I’m Italian ! Thanks for another push towards going natural.

JR Pacer: After my 50th Birthday I decided to stop coloring the color wasn’t looking good on me 18 months later I’m grey and so happy with it

Carmen Arispe: I cut my hair short & decided it's time to let go of the dye & let my hair go gray...2months out & it's starting to show...gotta keep my feet grounded...God give me strength...want to be healthy inside & out...55 & loving it...❤

I said: Thank you for this video.....it inspired me to go grey....I went cold turkey 1 year ago....the year actually went quite fast, now the front of my face is grey....it resembles highlights & it fits my skin tone. I don't ever want to turn back.

Life tobelived: I get the looking in the mirror thing. The first time I saw myself in the camera screen at the bank drive thru I could barely look at myself. On a good day I think my hair looks great on me on a not so good day I think who is that old lady looking back. It is all about transitioning just like a teenager has to transition but instead of dealing with pimples we have wrinkles or at least those transitioning to gray who are older.

victoria Wyckoff: I agree it is the best thing i ever did and always get compliments from girls, women and even men!! Check out the website, Gray is the new blonde. it is a new movement and it is spreading! Thanks for talking about it!

R Mee: I’m salt and pepper ditched the dye 3 years ago ... absolutely no regrets.

Gloria Koch: I have been coloring my hair for about 55 years. I have decided to stop. I am tired of doing it.

Ossie R: I’ve decided to transition to gray. I’m 68yrs old and I have gray hair, I’m not going to look any younger. I want to look the best of natural me.

MsSaka100: Anybody else watch this and think the hair dresser's hair would look better if she let it go to its natural color?

Doris W: This stylist Joanie Lamb is so cool and down to earth. I wish she could be my stylist.

Yudi Pitre: 4 months into my gray hair transition.

Life tobelived: Elisainmontreal is a good you tuber to watch about gray hair transition.

monde pourri: I was looking for a video about Jennie Kim and came across this

Laura Swihart: I'm grey face framed! I like it!

Gloria Koch: Why is it okay for blonds to have dark roots but dark hair with gray roots is a no no.
