Back to the african diaspora news insider, i'm gil zalalam, bringing you this report. Today'S report comes from togo. A group by the name of heal by hair project has identified a new method to help people with disabilities in the country. Women in various hair salons have been involved in the project and helped conduct counseling for these mental patients. The heel by hair program aims to train hairdressers to become mental health first responders. I think what they're trying to do is noble. They have access to the problem. They understand how a lot of people are, you know depressed or they face some kind of disability, but they can't share it because it's taboo and we see our hairdressers more often than other people, especially women. So if those people are equipped with, you know like a first responder information, they'll be able to help the women that they're giving service to. So i think i thought this was brilliant. Let me show you this clip we'll come back and discuss. Mental health in africa presents several challenges. Patients frequently consult both traditional therapists and psychiatrists in togo. A group by the name, heal by hair project, has identified a new method to help people with disability in the country he addresses have been involved in the project and help conduct counseling to members of their communities on how to live along with people with mental disability. The heel by hair project aims to train hairdressers to become mental health first responders, so the idea of going through the hairdresser is to find women who are there? We are going to find women and talk to them on confidential matters. The women are the hairdressers and hairdressers who are invisible in society today, because of their social status. Every day a hairdresser tends to an average of seven women a day they talk to them. They open their hearts to them. Yet these hairdressers are not really equipped today. To provide counselling in the field of mental health, so the idea is to set up the fast movement of female hairdressers will help in mental health in africa through their daily routine hill offers a double opportunity first, to raise awareness on the subject and link it up With intermediaries, who already have the trust and proximity of users, just as i was saying, since we have the possibility from the age of three to be trained in first aid in safety and physical health, it is the same principle with the healing through this program. So it's to be able to equip hairdressers to be able to explain to them what mental health is and also allow them to recognize the fast signs we will help them from the beginning of the care chain and, of course, to direct them to therapies. For the most serious cases, as you saw, they really thought about this and it makes sense. You know i've never thought about this before. But yes, like you, see your hairdressers more often than a lot of people and, as i said in africa, it's a bit taboo to talk about like mental health issues or there are not even like the profession therapy is not. You know, it has not been accepted. As much as maybe in the western world, so for now, if we are, if we have this women that can help their clients when they're going there to do their hair well, why not? This is a win-win! I think it's. It was a wonderful idea and i hope they continue, building this business and growing it and um recruiting more women more hairdressers to tackle this issue. I thought it was a wonderful, brilliant idea, anyways guys, let us know down below what your thoughts are about. This women trying to help their clients by taking a class on mental health and just acting like a first responder. I am going to bring you this report i'll see you on the next one.
