So the model we're going to be working with today is a practice head that I got off of Amazon a long time ago. We go way back, so I lovingly call her Sheila she's, a beautiful brown girl and the texture of her hair is perfect for practicing braiding, because it's kind of a Yacky texture and it has enough texture for you to practice on grit. So if you want to get your practice on, I definitely recommend this girl here and I will leave her information in the description box below. So you can pick up your own Sheila if you're following along today, I'm only going to be using two tools, just some hair clips to part the hair and clip it out of the way. I'M also going to be using a piece of extension, hair for demonstration purposes. I'M going to be using this blonde colored hair, but you are welcome to use whatever you wish. If you don't have any hair on you, you can also practice with yarn a lot of people. Don'T know that so pick you up some yarn and you can get you practice on them. So we're going to start easy and work our way up, beginning with the two strand method, I'm going to take my extension hair here and I'm going to basically wrap this around a section of hair. I'Ve already sectioned off. So, as you can see, I'm just wrapping it around the root, and now my natural hair is my third leg and my extension here, or my first and second leg, and I'm just going to start braiding down super easy super simple, super quick. This method is perfect. For beginners, because you're only working with the three legs here, so it's ideal for a course in kinky hair types because unfortunately it can easily slip out. So, if you're working with fine hair, this may not be the best option onto method two, I'm going to do. The same two strand method, but this time I'm going to wrap my natural hair around one of the legs, so I'm going to wrap it around twice until the natural piece is in the middle and then I'm going to start braiding down. This is just going to provide a little extra security at the root, however, because that natural hair is still the third leg there is that possibility of a little bit of slippage. So again, if you're working with finer hair types, this may not be an ideal option for the three-strand method, I'm going to split my extension hair into thirds and I'm going to take one-third of the hair and pull it apart and then I'm going to hook it Around the middle of the two-thirds piece, creating three legs individually here and what I'm going to do is I'm going to take one of those legs attach it to my natural hair and then I'm going to braid around it. A lot of people favor this method, because you're able to get a more even strand distribution. However, it's not my personal favorite because of the larger knot at the root. It'S ideal for most hair types, but, however again because that natural hair is still the third leg, there is the possibility of a little bit of slippage there. So if you don't have a grip game on point, then your braids may not last as long now, let's level up our brute security by splitting up the hairs a little bit. What I'm going to do is a two strand over and then I'm going to split the natural hair into two and also split that second leg into two and match them up together. So now I have two pieces of natural hair on two pieces of extension hair and I'm going to proceed to wrap and braid. This is one of my favorite go-to methods, because it's ideal for almost every hair type and I'm getting more even distribution of the strands. So it's easier for me to break down the shaft. The root security is on point. However, the direction that you braid it in is going to limit the range of motion, especially in the first couple of weeks, because when you flip it over, it's going to still lay in the same direction that you braided it almost like a half cornrow and we'll Get to that in a minute, so taking it a step further, I'm going to use the three strand method where I'm using one third of the extension, hair and looping it around the middle and then I'm going to split the natural hair into threes, and then I Have an even amount of natural hair matching each leg of the extension hair. The only downside to this method is you've really got to get your grip game on point. So it takes a little bit of practice to make sure that you are getting it nice and tight and snug, but it is amazing for even distribution. Do you see how evenly that's distributed? The only downside that I've ever seen with this is that, if you're using too much hair, the knot at the top can be a little bulky. So you just got to be careful with that and how you grip the root. As you can see that bad boy isn't going anywhere next, two methods are formed by more experienced friends who know how to cornrow the first one, I'm just going to start off a cornrow using the two strand method here, and I'm going to split one side of That two strand and then as I move down the hair, I'm going to pick up very, very small pieces of hair as I go along. The best thing about corn rolling is absolute root security that bread and going nowhere. It doesn't matter what hair type you do it on it's not going on anywhere girlfriend. However, there is absolutely no range of motion, as you can see, that braid is going to stay in the direction you put it. So, if you're parting a specific way. Just remember the direction that you braided in is the direction it's going to stay and, of course, for the three strand method, I'm going to split my extension, hair into thirds loop it around the middle and proceed to cornrowing grabbing very, very small pieces. This is for those who don't really know how to borrow it keeps your stranded distribution. Even however, you're stilling gon na have that range of motion. As you can see, this method isn't exactly my forte for the last method. I call this my hook knot method. This is something no one ever showed me and I think I discovered by accident, but it has worked wonders for me over the years, especially with working with finer, hair types and Caucasian hair type. So, essentially, I'm going to wrap the hair around the root and create a knot, so I'm wrapping the extension hair around their natural hair crossing it over and then flipping it on top of itself. In this situation, my natural hair is going to be my third leg. Zooming in a little bit closer, I'm going to wrap that extension hair around the natural hair. I'M gon na bring it under then over and then I'm going to slightly tug on it and loop it over the top, creating a very small nut. And then I'm going to proceed to braiding down use this method all the time. However, it is perfect for all hair types, especially fine, hair types. You have complete range of motion. The root security is on point. The only downside is is that it does take practice, because if you are not careful with your grip, you can do this a bit too tight and can cause a lot of tension. So you just got to be very, very careful with the tension there. So here's a bonus method for those who are concerned with tucking or even more, even strand distribution. You can do this hook, not with splitting the hairs. I only do two because three is a little bit more difficult and can cause more attention, but I make sure that I'm going to loosen up my grip a little bit there before I hook the knot over giving it just a little bit of give and room To play with at the top so you're not pulling on the hair too much but yeah, I do the slip knot with the two strand method as well in case you're. Wondering here is an example of the Slipknot method being done on a Caucasian hair. As you can see, it is very, even and secure and turned out beautifully. She wore this for a really long time and rocked it amazingly well. I was really proud of this one. So that concludes eight ways to start a box braids. I hope this video was helpful to you if you feel like you learned something make sure you thumbs up and if you are already in practice with these things, let me know in the comments below what method works best for you. Your video was the 1st and the only one that I needed. It literally took me less than 5 minutes to learn the method. So precise, well taught and your voice- OMG, so soothing (lol made me believe in myself). I can't thank you enough. You have changed my life.

iamcrystaLinas Nicole: I LOVED this video. I am trying to learn how to do this for myself and it’ll still be a process for myself but I’m so glad I can reference back to this video. I LOVED that you had the camera so close to actually see the process. Thank You!! ♥️

Lori H: I always try to do 5:12 and I always end up doing the accidental “hook knot” method, lol. This is wonderful! Thank you for showing the many options. I feel more confident in my work.

Mary Lawson: I love the way you demonstrate how to do box braids, my Granddaughter always wanted box braids and I never knew how to do that so I went on YouTube and show how you made so easy for me to do them for her thank you so much and keep up the good work.

Shaylon Gray: Thank you so much for this! I’ve been recently trying to learn how to do box braids, knotless box braids, etc. because the prices are just outrageous right now

Kiara: Oh my goodness. Thank you. I was looking for a tutorial for the longest and this one is it. It’s the most helpful and I can see how you do everything. Of course when I did my first few braids it was still terrible but at least the hair is finally hanging on and not sliding off. Thank you.

I know how to cornrow and I will be putting in box braids. Wanted to see other ways to begin. Hopefully she will be as patient as “Shelia”

Stacy Uzowuru: this helped me so much! i did the 3 strand split and God helped me get the hang of it in a few tries. God bless you truly sis! ❤️

Emily Rowe: I’m in cosmetology school and I really wanted to be able to do all types of hair and braiding especially because personally if you’re a cosmetologist you should know how to do all hair. This video was such good quality and clear and the pros and cons of each method is extremely helpful. I can’t wait to try it on my mannequin!!! Thank you

Rachel Thomas: You have blessed me TREMENDOUSLY!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!! This is THE BEST braiding video I have ever watched. I actually figured it out and learned what to do. I have three daughters, all natural and then of course, myself. I am sooo excited about finally getting this right for us! I truly appreciate this wonderful video.

acbattle: I love watched so many videos and this is the first that totally made sense. You gave great angles and the Pros and cons were awesome. I have soft/fine hair and braids always slip if they aren’t tight, which is always too tight. I’m going to try a few of your methods. Thank you!!!!

Ella Wagner: This video was so helpful most videos on this dont make much sense or assume you have some knowledge of box braids but as a white girl I have no clue what I'm doing. I really wanted to learn so im able to do a friends hair she has always wanted nice braids but her family cant afford it so I wanted to surprise her by being able to do them. Thank you so much!!!

DorothyDandridge: Thank you Vandy! This tutorial is what I needed as a beginner box raider ‍♀️. The 3 strand braid that combines your natural hair with the “third leg” worked for me. I have short, fine and natural 4a/b hair. I don’t mind a bulky knot at the top of the braid since I did jumbo box braids. I find on natural type 4 hair using some edge control or gel keeps the natural hair smooth and flat to blend well with the hair extensions.

Victoria: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have 5 daughters and can’t afford to send them to get their hair braided every few weeks so I’ve been searching and searching about how to grip the roots better. Your video taught me another way, which was perfect for me and also showed me how to tuck their natural hair! I’m sooo excited! Thank you so much! The three strand method works best for me. I was using the two strand method.

T Anderson: I just want to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for showing the different ways to accomplish braids. Being a beginner and wanting to do this myself for years I never knew how to start. This gives you options and has been extremely helpful. This video is EVEYTHING!!! So glad I found it!

Katherine Morarie: Thank you so much for making this video! I feel I can do justice to my daughters hair now with her braids. She’s biracial and her hair is really curly and beautiful but the slip with braids is a constant struggle for me. I’m gonna give it a go with some Brazilian wool, gonna have this video on repeat til I get it

Lola Walker: This was an excellent tutorial! The instructions were clear and on point!

Charee Lile: OMG!!!!! Thank you sooooooo much for this. I watched 10 videos that were an absolutely WASTE of time. Perfect angle/visual, perfect explanation, and perfect variety for different hair. I now feel more comfy doing my own braids before I install soft locs. Thank you again!!!!! ❤️

Jada W: Thank you for this! Elaborate with an amazing demonstration and easy to follow along! I will definitely be getting my own Sheila! This video is a blessing!

Jill Hicks: This was THE BEST learning tutorial for braiding I've seen!! It's the angle of the camera, you did it nice and slow for me to catch your movements, and you explained each method clearly! I'm definitely saving this tutorial and trying!

Elouise frimpong: This video was extremely helpful. I taught myself how to braid when I was a child.. and I’m just learning these different ways of braiding methods. The last method is my favorite one that you’ve shown. I’m going to try that on my Caucasian friend’s hair. Thank you so much!!

Zennor Juno: Thank you so much for this video! I've bought myself some hair after 20+ years of being all natural (I used to do mine with yarn back in the 1990's!) and nowadays such a beautiful variety of colours! I'm doing mine an ombre of purples (with gray lol). My natural hair was waist length but i've cut back to shoulder so its not heavy and got rid of the split ends. Again thank you for the video as I was stressing how to attach. x

cookiedoughh: You are amazing!!! Thanks for having good camera angles to actually see what's going on and clear instructions. This is one of the best braiding tutorials I've seen yet. <3

theresmore2learn: This is, by far, the most understandable video I've seen for this new to learning house braids!! Thank you and blessings for the New Far!!

River Vlogs: Thanks for this, I wanted to start doing my own braids. And now this tutorial was very helpful

Ch Baker: WHAT A FANTASTIC TUTORIAL!!!!!!!!!!!! Every aspect of attachng the extension was SHOWN in a manner that could be clearly seen. And then, your explanation regarding what works better for various hair textures. You are a phenomenal teacher!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing.❤️

Priscilla Blake: You do such a great job explaining! I don’t even braid, was just curious but hell now I feel like I can do it lol

Hinata Hyuga: You are amazing. I'm a beginner and I couldn't figure out how to braid my hair for the first time. Luckily I clicked on this video. I did the first twist and it made my braids looks perfect for a beginner. Thank you so much now I'm more confident in braiding my own hair. ❤️❤️

Jasmine Fortune: Just wanna say JOB WELL DONE!!!! You're an awesome teacher! My niece learned in 5 minutes what she had been trying to learn in 5 days

allyalleybooboo: I started off with the 2 strand method months ago. Once I got comfortable, I tried the 2 strand split method. I tried the 3 strand method for the first time today, and I can see what you mean about the even distribution!! I need a whole lot more practice. I can see the 3 strand being my favorite method.

Solstice-Qween: Just briaded my whole head doing the 2 strand and double twist it sticks very well! Thank you!!!!!!

Ashleigh: I'm currently trying to teach myself to box braid, and honestly just how to braid in general. I just found your channel and was over the moon when I saw this Braid School playlist, it's just what I needed!! Thank you so much!! ❤️

Natalie Puentes: Finally someone that actually shows the difference and good position with the camera and slows down to explain. Plus the pros and cons. Ive been braiding for a while trying to become a braider and this literally helped me so much.

Rhea Glover: Thank you so much for all 8 1/2 methods lol. I've never learned to braid. Awesome tips. May God continue to bless your service

Life with Stripes: Thank you so much!!! We adopted my younger sister from Haiti and as a white family, we have never been great with her hair. We typically take her to get it braided, but I've made it my mission to learn how to give her beautiful hairstyles. I feel bad knowing she's missing out on an entire culture of hairstyles and I want to give that to her. Today I gave her box braids for the first time and she was so excited!

ericka graves: Amazing tutorial! I could see everything you were doing unlike other videos. I really appreciate this!

Penny R: Watched your video. You made it so easy to understand. I did box braids on both of my daughters and they came out great! So proud of myself Great tutorial!

Kashina Bennett: I truly do love your methods . I’ve watched many tutorials and just doesn’t seem to workout‍♀️. With yours , it seems very easier and with this social distancing , I’ve been teaching myself how to braid and your tutorials help out A LOT. Thanks a bunch

Nicole Thorpe: I thank you so much for posting this. I am a beginner since this covid-19 hit and I have been trying to do my own box braids but did not know how to start the braid. This was extremely helpful, Thank you!

lilmommalady76: This is a great video for beginners and those who can get their braids to stay after one of these methods. Decades experience of braiding here and I just want to add one more way in case it might help someone if they still need another method. I've learned (self taught) the best way FOR ME is to (1) braid the person's natural hair to the end then (2) split the braiding hair in half (in a two-thirds/one-third ratio) and (3) crochet the two-thirds in at the braid's root and pull one side through (will look like a T) and even the braiding hair to cover the natural braid and then (4) add the one-third directly on top and at base (no crochet and another T) (5) carefully hold the two-thirds braiding hair over the natural braid (to keep it covered and protected) and then (6) braid to the end. Pros__This ensures the braids won't come out, creates less chance of frizz coming through the braid, and person's hair is protected and style will last. Cons__more time consuming and not as easy to quickly rebraid if needed. I hope this can add to the wonderful ways that have been provided in this video. ***EDIT*** Here is another way that I saw YouTuber Adanna do her box braids https://youtu.be/GhUysVRzL3U I'm looking for a video like the way I described and when I find it, I'll put the link.

Thea Sterling: OMG you just taught me how to add hair to my braids using the 3 strand method! I have attempted it for years! Your view and technique was key! Thank you so Much! ‍♀️‍♀️

Tyler T: Thank you for making this video! It's the most comprehensive braiding video I've seen over the last 3 yrs. of trying to learn and I finally get it!

Bridget Williams: I have always used the hook knot method. So glad that you showed the different ways to actually install so I can switch it up

Choco Taco Taco: I appreciate this video a lot. As someone with a white mom I had to learn how to do my hair by myself. I've been trying to do my own box braids for years but could never figure out the 3 strand method, no matter how many times I tried or watched the video. I had no idea there were so many different way. Thank you so much for sharing

Deborah M: This is such a well done video! My boyfriend is black and I’ve been cutting and styling his hair since our daughter was born so that when her hair is longer I’ll be able to take care of her hair well too. Tanisha Piekielski: First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been watching video after video trying to figure out how to do box braids, especially with this Quarantine going on.
