What is a Capless Wig?

capless wig (also known as a wefted or open cap wig) is one of the most common wig caps, used and loved by many wig wearers. The cap construction is made from wefts that are sewn together, with more space between each weft for breathability and comfort.

Whether you’re new to wigs or an experienced wig wearer, we’ll explore some of the common questions asked by our wig-wearing community. These include what a capless wig means, the differences between wefted wigs and other types of cap construction, and the benefits of choosing a wefted cap.

What does a Capless Wig mean?

A wefted or capless wig is a type of wig cap construction. A capless wig does not mean that there is literally no cap – a better way to visualise a capless wig is to picture it as it’s otherwise known, as an open cap or wefted wig. With a capless or wefted wig, each weft of human or synthetic hair is machine-sewn onto rows of material. These rows are more spaciously apart in capless wigs than in other constructions, especially at the top of the crown.

The wig wearer benefits from  more room in between each row of hair as this makes the wig more breathable.. This is why they are known as capless or open cap constructions.

There are various wig cap construction types available, from capless to lace front wigsmonofilament wigs and hand-tied wigs. If you aren’t sure which wig style is best for you, we have a guide to picking the right wig on our blog.

What is a Capless Construction Wig?

With any wig, wefts of human or synthetic hair are sewn into rows of hair strands, or wefts, to form the wig. Usually, the more closely together these rows of hair wefts are sewn, the more voluminous the wig hair fibres will appear.

As the strands aren’t sewn as closely together in capless wigs, they are often much more lightweight and comfortable for the wearer. A capless wig is usually machine-made, too – this means that they not only give you gorgeous style, but they’re also much more affordable than other wigs.

What is the Difference between a Capless Wig and a Cap Wig?

The main difference between a capless wig and any other type of wig is found at the crown of the wig construction. A capless wig comprises spacious open wefts for a cool and comfortable style. Whereas with other wig styles, hair wefts are constructed much more closely together, which can feel much hotter as there is less space for the air to escape and the scalp to be well ventilated.

If you’re seeking a wig to play with your look and keep up with fashion trends, wefted wigs are great for this. They come in a whole range of styles and colours, so there is bound to be a wig that is best for you. For ladies experiencing hair loss or thinning, one of the other wig constructions may suit you better.

The Advantages of a Capless Wigs

1. Breathability: A capless wig takes away any worry about feeling too hot. Being ‘open cap’ means that there’s more opportunity for air to circulate, making your head feel cooler and overall making for a more enjoyable wig wearing experience. This makes it a great choice of wig to wear in the summer.
2. Lightweight: As the hair fibres aren’t closely packed together, this makes the wig a lot more lightweight and comfortable to wear for a longer period of time. A capless wig is especially great if you live in or are travelling to warmer climates.
3. Affordability: Capless wigs are much more affordable than any other wig type because of the way that they are constructed. Whether you’re looking to try out a new style or trend, an affordable capless wig gives you the option to add styles to your collection!
4. Volume: Capless wigs often have ‘permatease’, giving them a teased and voluminous look along the crown and part to hide the wig construction. This is brilliant for anyone wanting an easy-to-style and glamourous look all day.
5. Choice: Capless wigs come in a range of styles, colours and lengths to suit everyone’s needs! Whether you want to cover any thinning or balding areas or want to try out a new look, a capless synthetic or human hair wig is a great option! If you are looking for some longer locks, Robin Wig by Noriko Rene of Paris is a popular choice, and the Tori Wig from Rene of Paris is great for a shorter style!

The Disadvantages of a Capless Wigs

1. Lack of styling versatility: Unless you choose a capless wig with a full fringe, you won’t have the option to change the parting of the wig.
2. The crown: Due to the capless wig construction, the permatease along the parting of the wig can be more noticeable than other wig types. If you’d prefer to have a more natural-looking wiglace front and monofilament wigs are a great option for a natural parting.

How to Care for a Capless Wig

Like any other wig, a capless wig needs looking after properly to make the most of your new style and keep it looking gorgeous for longer. It’s important not to treat synthetic wigs and human hair wigs the same. Human hair wigs will need washing more than a synthetic wig as they will react to the weather and humidity, much like natural hair does. However, synthetic wigs are more prone to tangling, so they will need styling more often to appear as natural as possible.
