How to Style Long Wigs Flawlessly

Long wigs are so fun to style as the options are endless! Not only are long wigs extremely versatile for styling compared to short wigs but they also help to keep you warm in the colder months.

There’s no right or wrong way when it comes to styling long wigs, as long as you’re happy with the look and feel good that’s all that matters. Whether you’re after a long human hair wig or a long synthetic wig, here we share our favourite methods on how to style long wigs.

Eight Ways to Flawlessly Style Long Wigs

1. Plaits

One of our favourite ways of styling long wigs is with plaits! There are so many variations of plaits to choose from, such as your classic braid, fishtail, French or Dutch braid. You can style plaits down the back of your neck or to one side depending on the kind of look you wish to achieve.

For an effortless look, gently pull on the plaited hair to loosen the braid.  Not only is plaited hair a beautiful look, but plaits help to keep the long hair out of your way whilst looking stylish and modern.

2. Ponytails

High or low ponytails are a great way of styling long wigs and are the perfect choice for creating a glamorous look with hardly any effort. Ponytails are a versatile style that can be worn casually, or you can jazz up the look with a headband or a hair clip. For a high ponytail, make sure that your wig is secure or on a wig stand and use a hairbrush to comb the hair up towards the crown of your wig to create a sleek look. For a low ponytail, use your fingers or a brush to move the hair into a low pony gently. Be cautious not to tie the hair too tight to avoid any damage to your wig when removing the ponytail.

For a natural look, we recommend keeping a few hairs around the front of the face loose. A wig hairspray is a perfect way to finish off the look, especially to tame any wispy baby hairs.

3. Heatless Curls

Styling long wigs without heat will not only help to keep your wig in tip-top condition in the long run, but there are also so many different methods for creating gorgeous heatless curls. Curling a wig without heat can easily be achieved with the help of bendy rollers, plaits, a headband and also a doughnut bun.

For those who are short on time in the mornings but want bouncy curls, why not take a look at our long curly wigs so that your wig is always styled and ready to go! Or for a more casual look, beach wave long wigs are a perfect choice.

4. A Bun

Long wigs are excellent for putting into a low or high bun. A bun is the perfect style on those days where it’s a bit windy out, but you still want to create a sleek look. Buns are also versatile enough to be dressed up from looking casual to formal and low buns are a great choice; whether you’re having a day around the house or at work.

If you don’t feel comfortable with creating a bun, the doughnut bun technique is an easy way to create a perfectly formed bun. All you need is a hairbrush, a hair doughnut and an elastic band and voila!

5. Straight

If you have a long human hair wig, you can safely style it using heat protectant spray and straighteners. Unfortunately, if you have a long synthetic wig, the fibres can’t withstand applied heat but if you prefer synthetic wigs over human hair wigs, have a look for heat resistant synthetic wigs. If you like the straight hair look but don’t feel confident with using straighteners, a straight styled long wig is the best option for you.

6. Hair Up Half Down

A half up half down look is a beautiful way to style long wigs. The half up half down look is a great smart-casual style that you can accessorise with hair clips; one of our favourite looks for an in-person or virtual Christmas party.

It may be easier to create this style whilst wearing your wig, but it depends on what you’re most comfortable with. Firstly, make sure that your wig is thoroughly brushed through. Next, place one finger at either side of your eyebrows and bring your hands up through the hair and towards the crown to create a half ponytail. Now secure the half-up ponytail with a hair elastic or hair bubble and style the half down section of hair however you please.

7. A Fringe

Did you know that your wig can be cut? If you have a long wig and are looking for a more permanent change, you can take your wig to a professional hairdresser to be cut and styled. You could have layers added, a change in length or a fringe cut in if you fancied a new style. Just be aware that once your wig is cut, it won’t grow back.

A long wig with a fringe is a chic look, and you have the choice between a full fringe or a side fringe. A long wig with a fringe helps to frame your face and add a new dimension to your style.  If this is your first time looking at long wigs, why not consider one that already has a fringe? Wigs with fringes help to conceal the wig hairline which some people find difficult to make look natural.

8. Hats

Hats and headwear are an excellent choice on those days where you want to wear a long wig but don’t know how to style it. What’s more, hats are a great way to accessorise any outfit and keep you nice and warm in the colder months!

Top Tips on How to Style Long Wigs

Make Sure Your Wig is Dry

If you have washed your wig before styling, be sure to let your long wig fully air dry before attempting to style it. Styling a wig whilst it’s wet could lead to the hair fibres becoming brittle or damaged – a no go!

Use a Wig Stand

Some people find it easier to style their wig when wearing it, whilst others find placing the wig on a wig stand the most beneficial way to see the hair from all angles.

Take Care of Your Wig

As the colder temperatures set in, it’s important to take care of long synthetic or human hair wigs in winter weather as, like your own hair, human hair wigs react to the weather. When styling long wigs in the colder months, it’s important to try and defrizz your wig and choose the right styling products for your wig to avoid any potential wig damage.

Brush Your Wig

Always gently brush out your wig before styling to remove of any pesky knots or tangles. If you’ve styled your long wig with the hair down, we recommend carrying a wig brush or comb with you when out in public; it comes in handy on those windy days.

Only Use Appropriate Wig Products

If you’re looking for wig products when styling long wigs, why not take a look at our wig care products to help elongate your wigs life. There’s a wig product out there to help you when styling long wigs to get your desired look, from the Hair Power Ellen Wille Styling Cream to the Jon Renau Wig Flexible Spray Gel.

For example, you could style your long wig with heatless curls one day, and the next day style those curls in a low ponytail or a half up half down look.

When styling long wigs it may take more than one attempt to get the desired look, so be sure to take your time and don’t rush. However you choose to style your long wig, wear your look with confidence!
