#thesalonguy #hairtutorial #haircut

In this video, I demonstrate how to layer your bangs or fringe properly. If they are not laying properly, it's probably because they aren't layered.

What'S going on YouTube Stephen, a salon guy here so in today's video I'm going to be showing you guys how to layer bangs properly. So if you're a client watching this - and you know you're just wondering why your banks aren't laying properly or there's an issue going on and if you're a hairstylist, you need to watch this video understand because there's a technique that I do all the time. And it's very very effective when you think about you, know the bangs or you know fringe for all. You are lovely Brits out there and you know I when I'm doing this, I'm actually treating this as its own kind of separate haircut. Believe it or not. You know I treat this as something that is its own thing. You know, especially when you know you've got this as a separate, disconnected piece from the entire haircut right. You know, you've got bangs that are blended in you've, got bangs that are angled. You'Ve got a whole bunch of stuff going on when it comes to this area, but a lot of times if you're, just cutting it straight across and you're, not really layering it properly. Then it could cause the issue. So I'm going to show you guys how to do that today, let's get started alright. So what we have here is we've got our base fundamental section for the bangs or the fringe, and what I've done is you know I didn't go too far back, but I created a triangular parting, as you can see right in through here and the first thing That you guys need to do and if your client is obviously established the length of your bangs. So what you need to do is really be careful right, and this is really gon na be focused more towards a technique. Okay, so you know, if you're doing this yourself at home or whatever it is. You know if you're a stylist cutting this. You have to make sure that the length is not gon na, be too short right, because once you cut bangs too short forget it. It'S better to have a little bit of length to it and then create some texture afterwards, right I'll go a little bit shorter, but once you cut these things to short, forget it. What you never want to do is hold the hair and cut it exactly where you know, you're gon na put your finger here or where you think it's gon na, like it what's gon na happen, most likely it'll spring up. It may separate there's a whole bunch of issues that can go on all right, so we're gon na do. Is I'm going to lock my comb like this, and this is gon na be kind of the best way for me to cut this. You want to give yourself a little bit of room here, a little bit of extra lengths, you're, not cutting it too short, I'm just gon na kind of scoot down here and we're gon na cut straight across. So, as you can see, what we've done is: we've created perfectly nice straight bangs and if you want to go in and cut that little piece in the corner, if there's any little strays feel free to cut them. But it's best to have the hair a bit longer because when you remove the weight through layering, they're gon na actually spring up a little see how it's already springing up. But it's spring up to an ideal perfect length. So, if you're cutting your bangs yourself, locking in with that comb and cutting it straight across as an ideal method, so now the most important part, which is the layering so by layering, the hair. What you're doing is you're removing weight and I like to do a technique where I'm going to start in the corner. First right, I'm going to start in the corner and let's turn so. You can see this and I'm gon na Comus all straight up like this. So, what's happening is that as that hair falls down, what's laying on top of it is the weight, and that is what we need to remove that excess weight to make sure that these bang could actually have a nice flow to them. So there's the length again let that fall down and we're gon na cut straight across and what I'm doing is I'm working from left to right to Center and I'm gon na be doing the same thing on the other side and I'm going to bring this all Straight up and cut it so that we're actually creating a beautiful shape and removing that weight so that the bangs actually have some movement to them and they're, not just a big clump of hair, that's sitting on top of you know the someone's forehead okay, so there's That so now, what I want to do is I'm actually going to do this on the other side, all right, let me just bring this back a little bit, so you guys can see I'm going to stand on the opposite side and I'm going to do the Same exact thing: I'm gon na comb, the hair straight up like this, just like I did before, and there's that little bit of weight, we're going to cut that off the reason I like to do this again. As I mentioned, this is a technique. You know I treat this as almost like it's its own hair cut. The reason I like to do this on both sides is because it allows the hair to have a bit more flexibility and a bit more movement in case the client wants his. You know maybe sweep their hair a little bit more towards one side. This really really helps do that and it helps balance it out and, as you can see in through here, what we've done is we've actually created a nice silhouette. So far now watch this see. It'S got that great movement and through it like this, and that's it now, I'm not done the last part of this is what I like to do, and this is putting the icing on the cake I'm using the fine teeth of the comb, because I really want To make sure I'm getting all that hair with even tension, I'm gon na comb this straight back straight up like this and that little bit right there is that excess weight and I'm gon na cut that straight across. So now what we've done, and this little section of hair right here, what we've done is we've actually created a bunch of layers, as you can see right through here, the hair is falling shorter. All the way down to the bottom we've actually cut it so that if the client wanted to kind of sweep the hair over a little bit to one side, she can do that and do that on the opposite side as well, you know, but really, ideally, this Is for someone who likes to where they're hit the fringe or the bangs straight down like this, let's blow-dry it and I'll, show you what else we can do with this all right so now, what I'm doing is I'm seeing that's a bit longer right here on This one side - and it's probably because I was trying to stand on an angle without blocking the camera, which can be very difficult at times. So, let's comb that down and again it's better to do this now, as I mentioned, then for it to be too late afterwards. So if you do find that one side is a bit longer, what you do is you go in and there you'll be able to see it this way lock in the hair, and you can also cut these one they're dry too. You don't have to do it when it's wet right. I always like to do bangs, sometimes when they're dry, because again you're gon na see instant results, you just really really really need to be careful that you're not cutting them. Too short, you can also go in, and point cut like this to add a little bit of softness right into here. Again, it really depends on the type of look you want with them all right, but what's important is that we're looking at this part in two here we're looking at how its layered all right, that's what's really most important is the layering of it. So what I want to do is let's just go in here and I'm going to actually start to pick the hair up, like this and point cut a bit more when it's dry, just to add a little bit more movement to it. As you can see, look at all that movement that the banks have into here alright and what's happening, is if you're Coleman, you know, combing the hair run your fingers to it and you're still feeling it's a bit heavy. This is the best way to go about kind of softening it and shaping it, so that it's gon na be perfect, and you can also comb the hair straight up. You can do whatever you want and the hair is going to actually respond much better when it's dry, okay, it's gon na respond, much better when it's dry and as you can see through here, we've got great movement and great softness coming in through the bangs, which I think works really really well alright and that's pretty much it so here we have a nice finished fringe area with lots of beautiful layers, as you can see seen through here. The key is that you're not seeing any harsh lines. It'S very seamless - and you know it's definitely a great technique, so you know, ladies, let me know if you found this helpful if you're a client and you're saying no wonder my bangs look horrible, because that my stylist isn't doing that. Well, hopefully, you can learn something if you're doing it yourself if you're a stylist or you know professional doing this. Hopefully you guys found this helpful and please, let me know in the comments below so thank you guys so much for watching. Don'T forget to Like comment and subscribe and I'll see you next time for more videos with a salon guy. You

Fuzzy100666: Thank you for confirming I'm not crazy!!! I've gone to numerous stylists over the years, and when I ask them to layer my bangs they all say "Oh, you can't do that" or "You don't layer bangs". Yet, they'll criticize that my bangs are too thick, go too far back etc....but then refuse to do anything to help. To be honest, I've had to try and layer my own bangs because nobody is even willing to do it. Obviously my technique is not nearly as good, and I've used a razor instead to thin them out, but now I know layering bangs is an actual technique! I've always been made to feel like I was insane for requesting it.

Kathy Glez: I have to be honest, I love bangs, my hair grows like crazy, really fast, everytime the salon guy comes with a new bang video I cut my own hair, just like he said and I have never failed, this guy is a genious.

grinning owl: I've been cutting my bangs for decades using the exact same method as yours, except for the last part where you snipped the hair with the tip of the scissors. Back in the 80's, they used to call it the "precision cut", which makes your hair look great even on windy days, since it's layered in both directions. I think you did a great job with your demonstration. The only suggestion I have would be to explain why it's best to wet the hair first.

Micki McDaniel: This is EXACTLY how I like my bangs and I never knew how to explain this particular look to any of my stylists!! Now that all the hair salons are shut down and my hair is getting too long again, I feel confident I can trim my bangs just the way I like from watching this video! Thanks!

Tammy Brock: Love this video. No wonder my bangs split and looked crazy. All my stylist did was cut it straight across and did nothing else. ☹️ Thank you, this video taught me a lot.

Milly Ramos: Best bangs I’ve ever seen!!! You are a master at hair cutting! I wish I could get a haircut from you! People now a days can’t even do a basic hair layering haircut without messing it up!

Pam R: Thank you for including those of us who cut our own hair...very helpful!

Mary Jane Collins: Great instructions. Easy to follow. During this coronovirus, I've been cutting my own bangs, but they looked very "blockish". Cutting this way, they look fuller and move well. Thank you!

bohogal1: Salon Guy, this is a fantastic tutorial on cutting bangs and taking the weight off the ends. The point cutting in the interior of the hair is a nice tip, too! Thank you!

Mary Jane Chapman: I usually cut my own bangs. I used to take the whole section to layer, so thanks for showing to take small sections to trim! Love your technique!

jraes 25: My hair is really thin and my forehead is more flat than rounded, so my bangs are always volume-less and straight. I can never get that nice bounce to them! But I just followed this video at home and added a bit of layers to it, and the difference is astounding. They "poof" up easier and don't plaster to my face so much, this was extremely helpful-thank you!

Suzanne Roberts: Thank you!! This will save me during this Covid Lockdown when I can’t see my so loved stylist! I was ready to just shave me head and wear a hat!!

AP Schweiz: i just went to cut my fringe exactly the way you showed, and its great! i will never do the wrong way again! you are fab! Thank you for taking time to teach

Judy: The only stylist I ever had who knew how to feather my bangs was an Italian barber who was flatout the best haircutter I have ever had. I've tried to describe how I want my bangs layered and they always just cut them into a side bang. I pay a ton of money for haircuts that basically always look the same. I wish The Salon Guy would cut my bangs.

Y C: Omg thank you so so much for this vid tutorial! No wonder I sometimes feel like my fringe cut seems off? Maybe my stylist was and is doing it wrong this whole time!!! I’m going to try cutting my own hair now

Elizabeth: Works beautifully--did this on my own straight, thick, heavy bangs. Best bang video--discarded the others.

Amy P: I learned a lot from your videos about doing bangs. My hair grows fast so I have to deal with my bangs myself. Great video! It's interesting to see how this is done properly.

Cathy Bair: Excellent! I've never had a stylist do this before; I end up cutting my own bangs at home. Thanks a bunch ♡ ok...I had to find this video again to update my comment. I wish I could show before and after pictures on here. Bless you! ! My bangs look amazing ♡♡

Karen Lynn Wiebusch: I had a hairdresser that layered my bangs beautifully for years but then I started going to someone else. I really like the way my new stylist cuts my hair but she doesnt layer bangs like my original hairdresser did. Your video has helped me (carefully) to cut them myself and I love the effect. Thank you thank you thank you.

eponymousIme: Great tutorial. You explained really well and didn't block the camera. The only thing missing (for me) is how to incorporate tapered sides. My bangs start tapering at the end of the eyebrow and terminate at the top of the cheekbone/eye socket area. Would love to see a ideo on that! :-)

Kharla Jolly: I've had a hard time finding a beautician, who cuts my bangs this way! Thanks, for a very informative, valuable tutorial:)

Sharon Margaret Stewart: Thanks Steven for showing us as I’m a client great to look out for I’ve had hairdressers in the past been scissor happy with my fringe now I always ask for a grown out fringe ⭐️

JJ Bedrhi: Wow, the art of creating bangs is soooo amaaazing! I love bangs, but I have curly hair. Still nice to watch. I love bangs

Charlene G: Thank you! This was very helpful. I ended up cutting my own hair during this Covid thing and as a hairdresser I thought I could do it. Well that didn’t quite work out but after watching one of your videos I was able to fix it! Thanks again.

Christina Dewi: I learned this technique from your other video in the past! It works well, thanks to you!! . You always make learning become simple!

Sonia: Where has this been my whole life?? I followed this and my bangs look amazing! Thank you so much!!

Carrie Vogel: I’m so glad I came upon this video. I’ve been cutting my own bangs and they have been good but I’ve been trying to figure out the layers and this makes so much sense! Thank you!!!

Lehua From Kailua: Thank you for this bangin' tutorial video! I can now cut my own bangs with confidence! Huge Mahalo!!

Joslyn Sarshad: Thank you! My bangs we just sitting in a chunk on my face and looked horrible! I tried the left-to-right and vice versa section trimming and was nervous at first when the upper layers were so short, but now they're laying much better and more lightly. Thank you!

Sandra: Great tips! I've cut my own bangs for years-definately going to try this.

Judy Williams: Hello, and thank you for your video. I go to one particular hairstylist to do my bangs because she usually does them perfectly. I like them REALLY layered; more than most people would! But that way they're perfect for 3 or even 4 months because I also like them quite short. Unfortunately she goofed them up a bit and I don't really like what's going on with them (there is a bit of a 'step' in them on one side. Like a blunt step) so I was hoping to find something just like what you demonstrated. I'll give it a shot later on this evening. Again, thanks for spending your time trying to help people out.

Sarah C: Here in 2020. Thank you! I work on the road and don’t have time for bang trims at a salon. Easy to follow instruction. My trim turned out great!

Jade Balmer: Thanks for this tutorial...always nice to have a refresher when not cutting full time anymore!

goldkhw: This is such a good method. I've discovered that I can wear a side bang now after using this method. Sort of a "puffy" side bang. Looks really good. The best "BANG FOR YOUR BUCK" video.

Dorothy M: This is the exact way that my hairdresser cuts my fringe so I am going to try and follow this video. Very clear and good instruction.

Maineuser: Thank you SO much, TheSalonGuy! I want to try this. But the right tools are essential. What’s the comb that’ll hold those bangs? Mine are thin and fine. And what scissors — a reasonably good pair — will cut right on across without pushing the hair ahead of it, while cutting? If you could please provide links for the supplies, it would help SO very, very much... Thanks! Linda

Diane Marcus: My hairdressers never did this kind of cut to my bangs. This makes sense to me. Thank you.

Serene J: I did this and removed the "weight" and it worked! I have REAL bangs now. Makes a major major difference..it is much more texturized and so much more movement especially after I curl them! They are bouncy and very light. LOVE it!

KraZed Kat: Thanks for this!! Just what I was looking for my diy bangs!!

goldkhw: Just did my bangs again USING YOUR COMB. I got a red one. What a difference a proper comb makes. And I'm keeping "on top" of it now so it doesn't take as long. The "V" is brilliant. The comb. I can't believe the difference it makes. Thank you.

Jolene Phillips: Thank you for always educating and reminding us licensed cosmetologists the ways of cutting!! I love watching your videos and just wanted to know if you do any ethnic hair cutting videos?

Skinneee Lee: I went to a few hairdressers. They just can't get my bangs right. They would just cut the length and that's it. I diy this technique on my bangs, and viola... I love it. It's light and gives it volume. Making it so much easier to style.... and of course, look beautiful too! Thanks for sharing this!

goldkhw: I have been doing exactly what you just did only with dry hair. So I'm doing the right thing. And my bangs have been looking amazing. I'm not going to ruffle up the hair and point cut at the very end though. Too scary. I like your instructions for where to start the V at the top of the head. At last, I know. Thank you. (UPDATE: I'm back to watch again before I do my bangs. And I saw something that I missed in my first viewing. Thanks again.) UPDATE...UPDATE: Did em. They look SO cute. As a final thing to do, I make three layers from the top point down. Pin up each layer. And point cut the lowest one first. Just a little on each layer. Improvise a bit but the "V" is the VERY best.

Mirella Giovinazzo Mason: I'm growing out my bangs a bit longer so they were looking a bit scraggly. I trimmed them a just a touch like you showed us and now my bangs look great! Thank you so much!! ❤

Carol Liscinsky: Thank you for this video. It really helped me to explain how I want my bangs cut!!

Charlene Boster: Thank you for sharing this technique. I’ve never seen this done before with my bangs...that’s probably why I never liked them...but now I know what to show my stylist

Basak Parlak: Thank you Sir, after watching this video, thanks to you, I corrected my bangs!

romantic horror: I made a human hair wig, and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong with the bangs. Now I know. Thank you!

Animal Lover: Thanks so much! I often cut my own bangs as they grow so fast. I would be going to the salon weekly! Now I can do them myself! However, my hair is not like the mannequin you were using. I have fine hair that seems to stick to my forehead. LOL Hope I can still do it myself

Mary Leigh: I have to admit, I tried your method just now and WOW!!!!!

Kit Kat: Fabulous video! The thing with keeping those bangs at the perfect length, for me, anyway, is that I have to trim them up every 2-1/2 to 3 weeks. Worth it though.

Starlet D.: Thank you so much for demonstrating how to properly cut bangs. I moved and have been away from my much loved hairstylist for a year now. No one in my new town cuts my bangs right. It has been a nightmare. I feel confident to do my bangs myself thanks to your tutorial.

I'm Done People'n👣: As a Beautician myself...excellent way to do bangs very useful teaching.)) ..BTW would like to see you do a hair layering for heavy wavy hair long waist length. To keep length but lose the weight

Karli Morrow: Yes very helpful, as I often do my own fringe

D Lucas: This is the best, helpful technique I have seen yet on how to cut my bangs. Thank you. Saves me money and only I know how I like to wear my hair

Pamela Painter: I’ve been cutting my own bangs for years. I have to cut them a few times between haircuts. I do it the way you’ve shown except for the triangle. I will do that next time for sure.

Lidia West: Honestly, this is my most favourite tutorial I have watched so far. Really excellent Thank you

Miranda Bailey: I love this technique...thanks for your videos

Carolyn Clune-Galione: Good job....enjoyed seeing how to texture the bangs once cut.

Cami Cri: Thanks, very informative! How about if you want to have it part on a side? How do you cut it then?

R Erwin: This video was great! It looks like something that I can actually use on myself.

B11IE 111: Finally! This is the video I was waiting for! Thank you so much.

Avril Retief: Awesome, thank you, that was so helpful

Lhor Bred: Thank you..as a mom of 3 girls I prefer cutting their hair than going to salon regularly.. this video helps me a lot so thank you so much

sandra: You make it look so easy love it

Lass X: Really helpful video. Though I am struggling when I ‘lock in the hair’ with the comb to the length I want, to actually cut in myself. The comb is getting in the way.

janie digh: Since Covid-19 started, I haven't been able to get a haircut. I started cutting my own bangs. They look alright, but not great. The finished bangs in your video look EXACTLY the same way as mine did when my stylist did them! There's no way I can make them come out as well as yours (or hers), but now I can make them look much better. Thanks!

DHoz: do a bangs video for wavy hair! or can this be done for wavy hair too? <3 love ur videos

ICthruthngz: Nice. This is how I learned to cut bangs in Cosmetology school in 1985! Works great! ❤ ✂️

M 3: Thank you for this tutorial. I cut my own hair and bangs (my hairdresser can no longer cut hair). My bangs need a cut and I am going to try your methods.

The Smith family life: Extremely helpful:) always learning from you:)

Pamela Roberts: This is one of the most helpful hair cutting videos I have ever watched! Thank you so much!

I AM WHO I AM D: I did find this helpful. Thank you very much for sharing.

SUE: I'm not a hairdresser, just a client who goes to them from time to time, and no I've never had anyone do as good a job on bangs, as you have demonstrated can be done .....oh but I wish it could have been my hair being on the thin side would have looked so much better I think if done with these techniques, thank you for doing the video so maybe I can learn to help myself and my bangs.

Sharon FLOYD: I have natural curly hair. I caught feathering for my bangs and layering for my hair. It’s so hard to find someone that can do it right and less you want to spend 50 $60 on up for a haircut. Now that on disability, I can’t find anybody that knows how to do it right. I don’t know what their problem is but I don’t like being the guinea pig lol Nice job

Liz forbes: Omg ur the best.... it’s bin years n years I’m 64 now and FINALLY I came across a brilliant stylist!!! Thanku so much for the tip.... my bangs hav sucked so long and I just kept cutting with no spring in the bangs before u came along❤️

Jenny Combs: Amazing!!! I will show this to my hairdresser!!!

Esmerelda Indigo: Yes! Thank you! I have hip length hair and like long bangs around my face-- with layer and movement. It has been a challenge. This helps.

Patricia T: Best bangs haircut I've ever seen, (in 69 years.) Thanks! ☺

Penny Shirey: You Always have great techniques to help learn how or show your own technique that works for you! You’re awesome and it’s too bad I don’t live where you are. I would pick you for my hair stylist! Hope all is well with you and things are better since you took your break!

Hot Jul: I always cut my own hair, self taught. This was helpful. ThNk you.

krissy wolf: I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my bangs.... I did everything right but they looked off still... It was because they lacked layers... Thank you for this awesome tutorial. My bangs look so much better now

Just Random: I cut my own hair and am always happy with it. I would love those model heads.

Mandy T: No hairdresser has ever cut my fringe like that over the past 15yrs at it does my head in. As they learn it at college then forget. Brilliant video & great cut thank you. ❤️

Sophie H: I love my bangs.., but my hair grows fast and I tend to slightly trim them while I'm styling my hair. This vid was extremely helpful.. salon guy is awesome! I just subd..

Carol Weaver: That is how I like my bangs! I ask if they will point cut, and always ask to leave a little longer than my eyebrows. Often they are above my eyebrows and that I do not like at all and it will upset me forever until they grow out. Have liked them cut when dry just so they will not make any mistakes but do not want to sound bossy. It is bad enough I have to ask for all of this when I come in. I can do the point cut, of course, but I thank you so much for showing me how to do the layered look and do it properly. I know it is a little harder on your own hair probably, but this I will be doing when I need it done again. Often have to admit before I go to hairdresser my bangs will have grown too much and I end up doing it myself and then just do not have the look I want without that layering too. Thank you, so much!

Damnedgirl: I have walked out of a couple salons over the fact that the so called stylist asked me to pick ONE side I’d like my bangs to be. I told them they should cut them so that I get to decide what side I want to wear them because I personally like to change it up from time to time. How boring to always have it one way ALL THE TIME?! No thanks! I’m a proud subscriber and have searched/watched many bang tutorials... yours by far, the best technique I have ever seen. Appreciate you for sharing!!! :)

KJ Traylor: I'm not a hairdresser, but I learn a lot by watching your videos. Thanks!

Mary jacob: Great technique.. This is the best one..I really liked it. I am going to try this to my self.. thank you..

Lucy S: Perfect! Thank you so much!

RoxannaMoore: Out there are so many hairstylists but very few know how to cut fringe, this tutorial is amazing so inspiring

Treebard: That's beautiful, thanks!!! BTW, I couldn't find a link to hair-cutting scissors. Do you have a recommendation of best scissors? Thanks!!!

TheEnergyMagic: I've cut my own bangs forever - hairdressers seem to think that if they don't cut them overly short, they haven't done their job, so I tell them to leave them. Sometimes I get the bangs really great looking, other times, just OK. I see from this video why it comes out right and will get them right from now on, I think.

Alona Myronenko: Thank you so much! I was able to fix my bangs :)

monsta Robinson: carefull not get to close to the bits not needing a trim with your sheers, those sheers are rather long. other than that you are a awesome guy with sheers!

cherre2008: This was one of the best bang videos on Youtube.

GiGi Is: Amazingly enough, I do my own bangs like this. I am not a hair dresser:)

Madeleine Audette: Love this. I cut my bangs, so this was helpful.

TiffiT.: You’re a genius! Any chance you could show the original Farrah Fawcett hair cut? ‍♀️

yakk13: Thank you for confirming that you don’t part the hair from all the way to the corner of your hairline. I keep trying to explain that to stylists but they cut over too far and I get a flip out on one side from that excess. Looks awful
