"I Love Haircut - I Love Hairstylist"

Now jess has this fabulous texture, so we're going to also address her texture and we've already discussed in our consultation. What we want to do with her fringe today, all right, so there's a couple of things that we really want to think about when we're cutting the fringe. The first thing that we're going to look at and address is our face shape, so this is really important. For example, if i was working with a guest that had a very diamond shaped forehead, i know that my sectioning is going to be very small and that my actual fringe or bangs are going to be small to mirror that section as well. Now, let's look at jess's forehead, so just actually has a square shaped forehead, so i know that my sectioning is going to be a little bit larger um just to go along with the shape of her hairline. The second thing that we're going to look at is we're going to actually look at the shape of her head, so um on all of my guests that i'm creating a fringe on or trimming up their bangs. However, you want to say it: i'm always looking at these two elements right, i'm looking at the actual hairline and face shape and then i'm going to come in and i'm going to actually look at the shape of the head. So i'm going to take my comb and i'm gon na rotate it back and forth, like a seesaw and i'm gon na find where the head starts to round down. So jess's head starts to round down right about here. So i know that i don't. I do not want to go any further back than that point. Let me kind of section this, so you can see a little bit better, all right so again, i'm just taking my comb and i'm kind of rotating it back and forth, and i want to come down to the point where it rounds down now. What would happen if i went further back with my fringe? Is it's no longer going to want to live forward right, so i'm actually cutting a section of hair to live in the front of her face moving downward right. So if i go too far back where the head starts to round up or then actually round back down, it's not going to live forward right, it's going to live off to the side. It'S going to be a super awkward layer. Don'T want that right! So i'm going to take my comb, i'm going to rotate it rock it, i'm going to find where her head rounds down all right. From that point, i'm going to go from the where the head rounds down to her high recession right. We already talked about um, where her hairline comes into play, grab some clips and she disappeared just kidding all right. So again, i found where jessa's head rounds down and then i come in from the point of the high recession. Now one thing i definitely want you guys to be very aware of: is the sides? Okay? So i always tell my students that i teach here at tangerine salon that consistency is the key. So if i, if i have a really clean, concise way of sectioning the fringe, i'm going to be able to be consistent every single time, so i want to make sure that i'm not actually coming into the side of the hairline right. I don't want it to lay super chunky or bulky off to the side. So as soon as this starts to be the side, i want to push this out of my way. Just get it out of my way. Don'T have to worry about it all right, then. I'M going to come over to the other side same thing. On the other side. All right, then, i'm just going to check my section for balance alright, so today i'm going to be showing you three different density of bang or fringe okay, so this is actually the heaviest amount of fringe that i would have on my guest um. So again, this is where the head rounds down and then to high recession and high recession. So this is the heaviest amount of french now for jessa's hair. Today we are actually going to be doing a medium density fringe on her today, so to go in for a medium density. All i'm going to do. I'M actually right-handed. So i'm going to come over from my left side and i'm going to take my comb at the corner of my section and then i'm going to draw a half circle. So all this does is it takes this uh point off of my section and i can make this as light or dense on this uh. Taking this circular shape. So again, i am checking for balance all right, so this is going to be medium density, yay, medium density, all right. Let'S say that um just decides she wants to be. You know a little on the conservative side and go more of a a lighter fringe or a wispy fringe. All i'm going to do is take my circular section and i'm going to draw a line and cut it in half all right. So obviously i need to clean this up. Clean sections are the best okay, so that would be a very fine soft fringe now, a lot of times. What happens in the fringe section is people will either do way too much or way too little. So this is the lightest amount of fringe that i would do on just for her face, shape and density of hair as well. So again, i'm going to actually draw these shapes here. So again, we want to find where the head rounds down and then we're going to go and it's hard to tell them on this head, but we're going to go high recession. Okay, so if we can visualize here, this is where the head rounds down and then we're going to say: high recession, high recession, all right and so we're going to say this is heaviest density all right and then we're going to take our comb and we're going To draw a circle, a half circle, and this is going to be medium density, all right and then, if we were to come in and take this and cut it in half with just a straight line. This is going to be fine, slash, wispy, light density, and i can't i can't do the why this board runs out all right so again for justice here today we are actually going to do a medium density. Now you notice just has this incredible texture, so we're definitely going to be working with her texture as well. Do you have any questions coming in shay? All right, you guys shout out. If you have any questions, don't make me feel like i'm on an island. Where are you at all right? One thing, i know that um is asked kind of frequently is: do i cut bangs wet or dry, and the answer is both i like to do it both. So it all depends upon the texture density that i'm working with, but i do like to do a little bit of both all right. So you see me kind of moving the hair around and feeling what her texture is going to do and you kind of see we have like a lot of great movement in the center here, so i'm actually always going to start on a center sectioning. So i'm going to come in at the center now i know that um jess has this amazing curl that i'm working with so i'm going to definitely take that into account. So i want my centerpiece to be just on the bridge of the nose so that being with the texture and the the type of curl that i'm working with, i typically with uh normal textured hair, i will do about an inch longer than what i think i Want it, so i know that once i remove some of this weight of hair, i know that it can definitely spring up and there could be a cowlick or something that i'm unaware of now with jess's curl as well. I know that i want to go even further down so giving myself that inch, i'm going to go ahead and do another inch, i'm actually cut to the tip of her nose. Then i'm going to move the hair around and i'm going to see what it's doing get a little more water here all right. So i know that once this is diffused nicely, it's going to hit almost exactly where i want it to be, but i do want this middle to be just slightly shorter, so i'm actually going to go ahead and come and bring this up. Another inch all right. Take an inch off here all right, fabulous! Look how great that is: yay, okay, wonderful! Now i'm going to take this and again i am going to be framing her face, so i'm going to use that center section as a guide and i'm gon na over direct the remaining hair to that center section. I'M angling my fingers at a 45 and what that does. Is it just nicely frames the face there all right? So for the other side, again, i'm going to repeat so going back to my center section over directing towards the center taking my fingers at a 45 degree angle, all right, and then i'm going to check here just to make sure that i was balanced on both Sides, let me get the change a little bit wetter, all right, i'm loving this! It'S looking great, so i want to go ahead and dry her fringe just to see like how much spring. If i need to come in and detail anything, but that's looking pretty great to me - i'm loving this shape here. So i'm gon na combo, two products uh the first product i'm gon na - do - is our familia that we all love so much. This is just a light mousse and i'm just going to run this through and then scrunch it, and then i'm also going to use just a little bit of our be curly style prep, just because i don't want too much frizzy stuff happening in the fringe. On this beautiful new immediately fashionable jess, look love love all right, so i'm going to take my diffuser um, i'm going to do low, airflow and high heat, and then i'm just going to lift the fringe and let the diffuser do the work. I know like a lot of uh curly girls out. There are always afraid to get like bangs or fringe because you're like oh my gosh, my hair is gon na go crazy on me um, but i promise you. It is absolutely doable you can enjoy. Having this super fashionable fringe um, absolutely you just need the right. Stylist in your life and jess is actually a stylist at the highland village. Tangerine salon give her some big shout out: she's um, amazing stylist as well, and does wonderful things with curly hair. I think the biggest thing with curly hair is like the patience that you have to have, because it's a it's a labor of love, sometimes all right. So i don't know if you guys can kind of see what's happening right now, so her fringe is kind of splitting here, a little bit in the middle. So what that tells me is with her curl and her texture. It actually needs to be a little heavier. So i am going to actually release this uh center piece here and go ahead and incorporate some of this into my fringe, so i didn't want to go too heavy on her initially, but i definitely feel like through this center here. I need like a little bit more, so i can kind of come in and drop whatever. I want to add into that, and then this is where i can kind of come in and start just dry cutting, since we already have like the great texture and a lot of curly hair too. Sometimes it's nice just to cut it where it lives. So that's exactly what i'm going to do. I'M just going to maintain that nice angle. So one thing i feel like people do a lot when they have to go in and do some detail work when it's dry is they might get a little scissor happy and start cutting into their guide, and so you want to be very careful not to cut Into your guide just to refine what you already have all right, and that is a heavy fringe for our lovely model, jess all right. Thank you so much jess. Thank you. Thank you. Bobby you're. Welcome all right guys. I have my next model. Everyone, please say hello to lauren lauren's incredible and she is um so kind to be my mom today now on lauren's hair, we are gon na do a long curtain, bang which are which is trending so much right now, i'm so excited to just give her a Little something extra because being extra is fun, yeah, good posture, all right. Another thing that i wanted to kind of address with you guys too, is when i am cutting um lighter hair. I can definitely use a darker comb when i'm cutting uh darker hair. I definitely want to use like a lighter comb just so i can really see my cutting line and the contrast really helps as well. So for lauren, i'm going to use a darker comb all right same thing: we're gon na first look at her hairline and lauren. Actually has like a really pretty round face shape. You know what they say like this is the shape everybody wants, but nobody has. So how did you do that good genetics, so, with this uh forehead being like this nice round shape, i can really do a lot of different things, um uh, and so she can wear her hair back away from her face. So i i definitely um you know. I have a little bit more flexibility to play with there, so we know we're good with our our forehead shape, yeah and now i'm gon na go ahead and come in and i'm gon na find where the head rounds down. So the head rounds down right here. So again, i'm gon na start with my triangular shape and then making sure that i'm not coming into my sides now lauren definitely has like a finer texture of hair. So i feel like sometimes when you're doing a fringe, and you feel that texture, you might want to go ahead and do a thicker denser section and honestly, that's a huge mistake, because, even though she does have a finer density hair, the sectioning honestly needs to mirror And match her hair, because her hair is finer. This section should be finer, you know just kind of going along with what she has, and so i'm going to go ahead and check again where the head rounds down that looks good and then i can actually take a little bit more right here, all right, wonderful, So if you're wondering do i do this sectioning every time when i do a bang trim. Yes, i do um and if you work with me you know that i'm not lying. I don't lie to you um, but i do i do this consistent, because consistency is the key. So i start with this triangular section. I address the hairline and make sure that i'm in the high recession and not the sides of the hair and now lauren does not want this much curtain, bang and she's being a sweetheart. Let me do this so again: we're going to go through and we're going to do our half circular shape. Taking that point off and we're going to pin this back now, you guys remember if i wanted to do a finer. What would i do? I would cut this in half right, just slice that right in half, okay, but we're gon na, do it a little heavier we're gon na do a medium all right now for a curtain, bang there's two different ways to do it right. I can have it where it's like framing the face, or i can have it be a little blunter. It just depends on what type of style they wear like if they wear it up how they want it to lay um. I get the pleasure of working with lauren, so i kind of know how she does her hair, so i'm actually going to do it straight across that way. She can put it in a ponytail, she can pin it up or she can leave it down and curl and do some fun things with it all right and again, i'm going to start in the center here and i comb underneath and then i comb on top And what this does for me is gives me consistent tension. So again i'm going to go lower than what i want just because i want to see how much shrinkage i get so not too bad right. That'S not terrible! Now um, i guess i should have told you guys what my goal is, so i want hers to kind of sweep back and almost be. You know like a layer but not a layer when she curls it. So i want it to like just be a little below the lip area so that we're almost there. So i'm going to take about a half an inch off more going back to my center section, and you can cut this blunt straight across or you can point cut it for a little more softness all right. So then, i'm going to pull this straight forward. Keeping my fingers square to my body and then i'm going to do the same on the other side, pulling it straight towards my body, keeping my fingers nice and square, and then i can pull my section all the way together and check that as well. Now, if i wanted these edges to be a little softer, i could definitely do a little texturizing on them um, and i know that, since this is a very blunt horizontal line, i don't want it to fall this heavy. I want it to look very soft, so i'm actually going to texturize the ends just a little tiny bit again. Her texture is very fine, so i want to make sure that i'm, my motions are mirroring the texture of her hair. So i'm going to come and pull this all together and just on the last two inches of her hair with my blending shears, i'm just gon na very softly create a little bit of light texture there. What do you guys think? Do you like it? So i feel like this blends really nicely with her hair, but it gives a little lifted movement as well. Very pretty! Wonderful! All right! Thank you! So much lauren, so i am going to show you guys, one more fringe, uh we're going to do a sideswipe fringe. Um but i'm going to actually do it on a mannequin, so let me get my mannequin. Thank you all right, my lovely mannequin all right now my mannequin has dark hair, so you got it like home. So we are gon na find where her head rounds down by just placing our comb and leaning forward and again, if anybody's uh popped on kind of late, my name is bobby joe pulvino, my tangerine salon, i'm an aveda ambassador um. I should probably should have said this earlier, but welcome uh. We are doing the fringe today, so we are gon na start with taking our comb and we are gon na find where her head rounds down right about there and then also. I guess i should have added. We are going to be looking at her hairline right, so it is a definitely a wider hairline. So i want to make sure that my section mirrors the hairline here. So i'm going to come in find where the head rounds down and then i'm going to connect that to high recession, which sometimes can be really challenging to tell on a mannequin all right. There we go. I have to pin this it's wanting to jump away from me. You know you've made it when you can work on a mannequin head all right, so i'm actually gon na go ahead and wet the hair. Now you guys are gon na love. This water bottle has kind of gone crazy on me. Why not all right, so we are going to be doing a side swiping. So just to recap, we've done a really nice heavy fringe with our triangular sectioning, which is our heaviest section right uh. We did a nice curtain bang with a medium section, which is just taking our heaviest section and drawing a half circle to cut the corner or the tip off right. Now we haven't done a light fringe, so i can definitely do that for you guys after i do um the um side swept fringe, and that is just by taking our circle and cutting it in half. That would be our lightest fringe. Okay, so this would be the lightest fringe. I'M gon na actually pin some of this hair out of the way medium fringe and then the heaviest fringe and get some of this hair. Out of my way hope you guys are liking this okay. So the biggest thing with side swept fringe is you have to choose which side you're parting, your hair on okay? So we need to know which way our fringe is sweeping okay. So, for example, if she parts her hair on the right hand or on her left hand side, then it's going to be sweeping here, yay if she parts it on the right. It'S going to be sweeping this way, all right. So i'm just kind of looking at this making sure it's nice and balanced and um. This mannequin actually has quite a bit of hair at the front, so i'm actually going to do a medium section and take some of this off and it's okay to do that. With your guest as well, especially when you're creating a new fringe um, we cannot put it back right, so sometimes i'll cut a little bit less then i'll go back and i'll look at it and say: okay, that was too much or too little um. So we can always take more all right, so miss casey parts, her hair on the left side. Oh we're back sorry guys, sorry about that, um! Okay! So she parts her hair on the left hand side. So i'm gon na take all of the hair and i'm gon na comb it to the side that she parts then i'm gon na take my fingers and i'm gon na measure out the length. So i'm measuring the shortest point. Okay, so if she wants the fringe to start at her eye, that's going to be my shortest point. If she wants it down to her cheekbone, that's going to be my shortest point. She wants it to the lip. That'S going to be my shortest point, so i want all of this hair, nice and tight. So i'm gon na i'm gon na actually do it uh shortest point at the cheekbone and then i'll. Do it again shorter? Just so you can see it twice. So i'm gon na comb, all of this nice and tight, i'm gon na check my measurement cheekbone and then i'm going to do not that i'm going to comb it again. Nice and tight i'm going to measure out cheekbone and then i'm going to do one nice cut. Okay - and i know this is going to drive you guys crazy, because you want to cut and recut don't do it, then i'm going to release this and you see how this has created like a really great um layering effect as well. So it gives me my nice sweep and it also um layers it and takes some weight off of it. Yay yay easy, bangs right all right, i'm going to do it again, so i'm going to make it start my shortest point at her eye. So i'm going to comb this all together, nice and tight again. She parts her hair on the left hand side. So i'm gon na check it and then i'm gon na do one nice cut one cut all right and then i'm gon na comb. This awesome. Now we know with mannequins, we have to blow dry and we have to uh pretty much melt the hair down. Thank you all right. There you go. Is she gorgeous? Let me get her up and show you a little bit more, so you kind of see how it just sweeps over really nicely, but still very layered, and that's it if you want to go through and texturize this to create a little bit more softness absolutely. But how easy is that, and you can do that at any very length and again it depends upon where she sweeps. You would just do everything up nice and tight comb it over to where they part their hair one cut and then you've got this great layering effect.
