Hey everyone Jamie here and it's October, which means we're put weeks away from Halloween so throughout this month, and do it girl I'm going to be showing you a lot of fun crafts that can be great for Halloween party, decorations and costumes, and today, I'm just going To be showing you a craft off the top of my head right, it's time to show you how to make this DIY yarn wig. Let'S do it girl for your wig you're, going to need a big old thing of yarn. That'S your desired! Wig color buy as big of a ball as you can so that you know you have a ton of material to work with. I went with the multi colored yarn because I think it opens up a lot of possibilities for costumes but feel free to just go with one solid color too. You'Ll also need a knitted hat that has a similar color scheme as your wig, because parts of the Hat might peek through the yarn as you whip your hair back and forth. All right, that's not dated reference, but you know what I mean since my yarn has a dark color scheme with a lot of black in it I'll be going with a black hat. Finally, you're going to need scissors and a crochet hook what you don't have a crochet hook. You have meme either. If you're like me, you can just get away with using a bent paperclip instead. Alright, here we go is step one. The first step is to dive into making what I call yarn pigtails, because they look like this we'll be making several of these and then attaching them along the Hat to measure the yarn. You can literally use anything as long as it's the same length that you want your wig hair to be. You can use a binder a book, a pillow, whatever I'll be using this cardboard circle that I had leftover for my pizza dinner last night. It was delicious, starting with one end in the middle of your measuring guideline, wrap your ball of yarn around and around. I recommend doing at least 20 loops and then eyeballing the thickness from there. You want it to be what I call a skinny fistful when you're finished cut out your yarn, so that your end piece is on the same side as your beginning. Piece then cut out a small piece of yarn like a half a foot or so, and then tie a firm knot around your wrap strand. You'Ll want to tie this knot on the opposite side from where you cut your loose ends. So here once you've tied your knot, cut your yarn back on the opposite side right where your loose ends were. This ensures that your yarn strands are all about the same length and that they won't slip out of your knot, make an even dozen of these pigtails and then you're all set to attach these little piggys to your hat step. 2. Okay! So connecting your yarn here to your hat is super easy place. Your crochet hook, / paper clip through the topmost part of your hat and just a little off-center to the left, take one of your yarn pigtails and grab either end of the small piece of yarn. That'S not in your pigtail together now, pull that end back through your hat, using your hook. Repeat this step, bringing hook to the top of your hat, but this time makes sure to put your hook a little off-center to the right grab. That other end of your small piece of yarn and pull it through once more now simply take those two strands and tie them in a knot together on the inside of your hat now's, a good time to mention that you can also use chalk or artist tape To draw a border down your hat, to help you keep things straight, and even since you'll be placing the hook a little to the left and a little to the right of Center and voila one set down 11 to go secure. Three more sets vertically down the front center part of the Hat about 1/2. An inch apart then attach three sets horizontally at the back of your hat right below, where you placed your original pigtail. Finally, take your remaining four pigtails and attach two sets on either side of your hat. They'Ll be positioned below the end pigtails. On the back of your hat, creating a triangle like pattern over your ears and then these little piggies went to montage step. Four, almost done all that's left to do is create the bank repeat, step one, but this time use a smaller yarn measurer, since your bangs will be about six to eight inches. I'M using this small box of nails for my measurement guide, create at least three sets of bangs and then attach them right, underneath your set of main pigtails at the front of your hat step. 5. The last step is to perfect your wig by making your finishing touches. Try on your wig measure, where your bangs will fall perfectly on your forehead and then cut them with your scissors. Add more yarn if you need to in any patchy areas or even attach a bow or hair pin, if you think it fits your character and there we go your own homemade wig. I love this craft because you don't have to deal with the time constraints of sewing or the messiness of gluing, and you can make your wig any length any color and for any reason I mean, let's be honest, a bright blue and white. New Year's wig would be pretty sweet, but for Halloween purposes you can make it all white to be an angel or all-grain to be a fairy or you can make it multicolor in order to be more like a clown or you can just make it bright, pink Or multicolored blue like this one, in order to be anime or sort of like a rocker chick. What kind of wig did you create? Tweet me at Jamie Patito Instagram me at hey, Jamie or just tell me all about it in the comments below we did it girl, I'm Jamie and you're on girl, comm answering questions preemptively. How much yarn do you need to buy? Well, I bought two balls of yarn that were two hundred and fifty yards each and three dollars each and you can see how much I have left over. However, it's no problem to have more yarn than less, because you can always use it to make more wigs or to attach to your costume. Can you change the positioning of where you attach your yarn? Of course, mine was just a suggestion and since I did it down the middle, that means that my wig has a middle part, so you can attach it to the sides underneath anywhere that you get full coverage just so you all know. I totally thought I was going to have a much longer wig, because I used a pigtail that was about two feet. Long, so definitely make sure your pigtails are really long like three feet. If you want to have a wig, that's past your shoulders. Good luck! Everybody! I whip my hair that can put that with my back and forth on with my chili, what you don't have a crochet hook: no crochet whoa

Sarah Dyess: quick tip for this if you want to make a realistic looking wig brush the yarn with a wire pet brush and then straighten it with a flat iron

Faith Arvizu: Thank you so much! I was able to take your template and create an awesome Cabbage Patch Kid wig for Halloween! It's adorable and I can't believe I made it!!!

Stephanie De Falco: This was so easy! Thanks for the great video. I made a great Raggedy Ann wig with just one big roll of red yarn...and old panty hose as a scull cap. Happy happy!

The Katt Kult: I’m literally living for this 7 years later

Cherryblossom Desu: This works really well for gothic ragdoll costumes... very cute in ponytails ^-^ with little bows of course

amy owen: awesome! this is going to work perfect with my Emily Elizabeth costume!!!

alexandre borges: You rock, sweetie! Nice job. Thanks a bunch.

Lyssa Lectro: So I used this method to make the wig for Red Guy in “Don’t Hug Me I’m scared” AND OH MY GOD IM SO IMPRESSED WITH MYSELF! Thank you so much for this! Like, I legit was about to buy a $60 yarn wig (that would’ve worked, but wouldn’t have conveyed the look I wanted at all) so I decided to see if I could do it myself. I saved a bunch of money AND it was so fun to make. It is a bit time consuming (granted I need a LONG wig, so that didn’t help) but I really like crafts like this, so it was not a problem at all, especially for the finished product. My DnD Halloween party isn’t ready for me.

Lovee Columbus: thank you for your tutorial. your video helped me make my first wig! if I could figure out how to post a photo I would.

Mimi D: I love love do it gurl Jamie is so creative

Litzergam: I made a yarn wig last year. Tip however long you want the hair to be, measure double that length. I used a laundry basket and each bundle of yarn was 4 ft long. that gave me enough length to make Pippi braids.

Louise Sobieski: You simply have a spectacular sense of humor!  I enjoy every episode!  You should be syndicated!!

Kalie Gravedoni: I love the "Do it, Gurl" videos!

Djijser: I love it! If yo comb out and straighten the yarn it will look just like hair! Thank you so much because i need a lot of wigs

doitjamie: If you want to make it a braid, no problem! Simply attach the yarn (make it LONG) and braid it! Since you're adding so many layers, it shouldn't show the hat. To keep it from tangling, put all the yarn in a ponytail or pigtails. Have fun!

tarzan ツ dhesi: THATS SO COOL AND CLEVER I MADE A BEARD LAST MONTH USING YARN AND IT WAS FUN!!!

Chelsea Chu: I actually made "yarn pigtails" for my 5th grade class spirit shop. They had the colors of my school. But we made them into pom poms

Crafty Poos: I sooo want to be a rag dolls for Halloween this year now!! Lol

EliaPinky: "What? You don't have a crochet hook?" ... hahaha! loved it!

Rolando Grijalva: You can wear that yarn wig as a beautiful ancient egyptian queen , Jamie dolt...but I love you that much

booimjaimie: Can we use a glue gun instead?

Phyllis! at the Disco.: i would just braid strands the same size as your other "hair" on the wig then instead of tying it through the middle do it at the end.. Then pull some strands out to attach it. Make sure you have "hair" underneath to ensure no hat peeks through

Janay Webster: My mom did this to make me a cousin it costume when I was younger. Went to my feet

ava: The whole time in my head I was thinking "If I make this I'd scream DO YOU LIKE MAH WEAVE?!?" I need help.

AB Farrow: K I'm gonna need a lot of yarn. I'm making a Rapunzel wig. Thank goodness I'm not making it 60 feet long, It's gonna be braided with flowers.

Shloime Gross: how long do i need to make the pigtails for an adult head?

eve jones: Love do it gurl

kyandi3: yours reminds me of Emily's hair from the Corpse Bride :D

Kiera B: Nice idea

Creative Creature: DUDE!!! Cheap Cosplay 101 is what this should be called!!! Official anime cosplay wigs can range from $20-$60 depending on length and many other factors, I always just by the cheap Halloween wigs for $10 and make sure they're as close to the right length/style as possible, spray painting and styling when I get home. The only problem with using this kind of wig for cosplay is it's not all that easy to style, as least not from what I've found. (I had an old yarn wig from Halloween when I was a kid and could never get it how I wanted) Maybe you could do something on hos to get pony tails or spikes into 1 of these things. Anyways, for now I'll be using this idea for straight wigs. Heh, the cosplay I'm working on this is actually perfect because he's a doll.
