Time to think differently, break conversation!
In this video we look at using clippers to cut a graduated bob, I love this technique at the moment, the control it gives you is amazing to gently build up a beautiful graduation, I know the pure Vidal Sassoon Stylists out there are probably not going to love this one but I think we need to look at all tools and there different applications with an open mind.

Welcome to the life of hair, my name is James Atkinson and in this week's episode I am bringing to you something that some of the haircutting purists out there will find a bit controversial, but I quite like using clippers to cut women's hair with outlines graduated bobs. All sorts of things like that, so in this video I'm going to talk about how I utilize clippers to create feminine shapes, we're cutting the graduated, a line Bob in this particular video using a carving technique, and it's really quick. It'S really simple. It looks scary, and I appreciate it: I've cut it on a mannequin head and not a client, and some of you are going to say James I'd love it if you cut it on a real person - and I will at some point when I have the time, But I'm here just to inspire you to try something new, something different and think outside of your comfort zones. So I hope you enjoy it. If you do then share it with your friends, subscribe hit that thumbs up button, but most of all check to me in the comments any videos you'd like me to make. I will happily make you I'm currently going through the list of things that people have requested. So in the subsequent weeks, if you've requested something it is coming, I've got a pretty long list of things to go through. This was requested by a friend of mine who doesn't really use clippers in any way shape or form, and I really wanted her to see that you could use them in not just the clip ring with Jen's hair format. This is a great technique for creating a little bit of graduation or a lot of graduation. You can really really go for it and carve in strong graduated shapes, or you can use it very, very gently and just create a very soft bevel. Like you see here, one of the things about cutting graduation with scissors is once you've cut your guideline. You are committed to following that shape through to the end, whereas with this you can take off a very small amount and keep working it down until you get to the desired shape that you and your client are P with. I particularly like doing this for clients to aren't sure about the end result. The trick to this is just to keep working at it, taking very, very small amounts of hair off each time. You go past the shape and in this instance I've cut a diagonal line that that travels from back to front. That gives it a very nice soft a-line finish. It'S an incredibly easy technique to master. It just seems scary in the beginning, but once you've got your head around it you'll be hooked. I know that those Vidal Sassoon purists out there will be rolling in their graves, but we'd have to remember guys that there are tools there for a reason and we can always change the way we do things. I point cut the outline with scissors just to give it that slightly softer lived-in look, so it doesn't look too Clippard. This has given us a beautiful traditional graduation and I am absolutely in love with clip ring graduation at the moment now. One thing that we can also do with Clippers is that we can tweak the shape. We look at the right hand, side of the head here. It is slightly flatter than the left hand side. That is because I have used the technique that you are seeing right now on that right hand, side, and it is exactly the same technique that we used on the back. This means that the graduation will continue around the head from the back to the front, giving us a slightly slimmer flatter profile from the back and the sides. This is very nice on very, very thick hair. As you can see, there, we've got a beautiful slim profile, shape back to front now, but this isn't recommended on finer hair types and there we have it all finished, really simple, really quick, easy to use technique, one that requires practice. I appreciate, and one that makes you wicked using Clippers - gives you real control. I recently did this at the last Hair Club live event on stage got ten minutes to present, and I did a full graduated a line bob in under ten minutes, and you know I think it's one of those things that some clients will love some clients would Hate you know some people want that scissor, you know kind of vibe on the hair, but it does create or just give you the opportunity to create shapes that you just can't create with scissors. So it's just another tool to add to your kit and if you like, this, then give it a thumbs up and if you're not sure about it, then leave me a comment and I'd love to discuss your thoughts and I'll, see you again next Sunday for another Episode of the life of hair, you
Comments
Angela: Love how quick this technique is and looks great x
Jen Dodd: Very cleverly done. I have seen this done with a razor, it just carved a bevelled edge! Thank you James
Thomas Dazoxa: I've never even considered doing this, but it looks great!
Heather G: I'd probably zap in a step or two ... awesome to see how it's executed though. I've noted clippers used to refine (on dried hair) after cutting the shape on wet, but not to create the entire shape. Thanks James!
Diane Thompson: I use this too and love it!! However I use it more on the detailing!! Unlike you I like a clean crisp line around the bottom! So I bevel that bottom edge with my clipper almost all the time unless they like a softer silhouette! I think the graduated concave Bob is a dramatic haircut so I like to keep it structured and crisp!! I love seeing how different stylists interpret the same haircut! Makes my job interesting!!!
Adrienne Boullianne: there is more than one way to skin a cat, and the more techniques you master, the better stylist you become. plus, i like that you recommend going outside of the box. as always, you are an inspiration.
Sandra M. Belz: I want to try that. It's like sculpting the hair. Love the angle that results!
Lisa Rios: LOVE your videos and well explained education of each in your lovely accent of course. Could you please try and do a video or few on your favorite tools from combs to styling?? Thnx!
robert björnesjö: This looks soo scary, but so simple and beautyful . I know im gonna fuck it up the first time il try it, But with a lot of practice to be this light on the hand its an amazing tool to have
Tammy Werner: Hi James May I ask you to show us a grad uated Bob in the traditional way! Liked the clippers method but would love to see you do it your Sassoon way!!?? Thanks Tammy Oh PS I just found one in yr play list silly me! Thank you, loved them, you explain them in such an uncomplicated way! Best Eva! Tammy
kuts_by_kristal: Yes! Please can you do this in a little more detailed? I couldn’t really tell where you started and ended. I really want to learn this technique! I’ve watched it twice now
I should be sleeping: Whenever I use a clipper on the sides the client will question or negatively comment on my choice of tool. One gal snipped, “ I can do that myself at home “ I said,” Um...I kind of doubt that. But, it WOULD give us a few good laughs for years to come!” So now I quietly and quickly do JUST a BIT in the back (one minute or less) . PEOPLE
Adrienne Boullianne: would love to see your take on some men's cuts with difficult growth patterns, receding hairlines, etc., and maybe some facial hair basics. hopefully, you can use a human!
akolley1: love it, what kind of clippers do you use?
BFree in Jesus: Nailed It!
patricia russell: us barber school Designers had many months with only clipper cutting, it made us sculptors
patricia russell: I've been using all my barbering tools on women since 1980 Only because I was told i should not, you know when they tell us we shouldn't do something we have to do it and I went to VS on Davie Mews
Raul Tavares: So awesomeee
niche 123: Love most of your videos and techniques but this just wasn't right. It will really not hold a good shape over time.
