Welcome to the life of her, my name is James Atkinson. Thank you for joining me. This Wednesday episode that little cough that you heard in the background was my little boy, and that is because I'm still in quarantine measures here in the UK, as I'm sure a lot of you are wherever you are in the world, so I hope you guys are Well and that you're not suffering too much from this particular situation, I thought I'd bring you a Wednesday edition now. Normally I make my Wednesday videos around topics and subjects, but cuz you guys are off potentially who are watching this and I've decided to do a full-blown tutorial episode now. This was a requested episode from a few weeks ago. As someone came to me in the comment section and said, could I do or could they do channel cutting on longer hair types channel cutting for those of you that are not aware of that? Video is the way that I thin out or texturize shorter hair cuts, but not only shorter hair cuts. I also do it on longer hair styles too. This is a bob shape. A very blunt bob shape that's on very, very thick textured hair, and you know I'm a big fan of keeping things really simple. I don't like traditional layers too much, so I use this particular technique quite a lot in my day to day so on light. So I hope you enjoy it and I think it's gon na really cause some adverse opinions along the way, because it's quite an extreme technique - and I know a lot of you're gon na - say to me: how does it grow out James? How does this grow out and I can assure you I've been doing it for a very long time and if you get it right, if you make sure that you listen to the instructions in the video, it will just grow out seamlessly. One thing I will say is that you won't going to do this particular technique every single time the client comes in, because what you'll tend to get is is like an over thinning thing happening very, very quickly, so be conscious of that and enjoy this episode. If you do enjoy it, remember, share with your friends subscribe to the channel, hit the thumbs up button. All those things really really help and leave those comments down below I, and I will promise you. I read every single one when I get back to those comments. These days, well, I try my best, but I can't always so have a wonderful week enjoy the time with your family or on your own, something new and I'll. See you again on Sunday for another episode. As you can see, this haircut is all one length. I did a simple one-length bob to start this technique off now, when I'm cutting a bob generally, I don't use traditional layers. I just don't like the way it looks around 90 % of the bobs that I cut. If I'm going to put any texture in them at all, it is using this method. We split the hair down the center back and then, through the center of the Observatory. R take a horizontal section, this sections off the proportion of the head that has the most hair, or at least the most density. This is because in the sides there is less density to to the hair going around the ears. We are going to now start the technique now I know a lot of you are going to think this looks very, very scary, but if you follow from some very very simple rules, you will not go wrong. I can assure you in these underneath sections, especially we can be a little bit more free with this technique and take away a little bit more hair, because we have got more hair to play with the trick test. Technique is to comb the hair straight down from natural fall. Once the hair has been come down. We can then run our scissors opening and closing them very gently with very small snips parallel to a hair direction. This will remove lots of bulk from the hair, but also not leave us with any unsightly lines or pieces of hair missing from this underneath section. It will also retain some of the weights in the outline, something that I'm very eager to do. When I cut a bob, that is why I don't generally use classic thinning techniques that only take weights away from the ends when we move our way up the head. We take another section around two inches in depth and we take that section and elevate it around 45 degrees out from the head shape. We are now working on the hair that is 50 % of the way down the head. You will note, as we work up to the head, we will work further and further towards the ends. Take another two inch or two and a half inch section along the head shape this time to the front of the ear. These sections will depend on the thickness of your clients, hair. We then run the scissors down the hair parallel to the head, shape from about half way to remove the bulk through the Midlands and ends. This is not a technique that I particularly recommend doing every single time unless your client has got extremely thick hair. The client who I am doing this on does have extremely thick hair and I do do this technique most times, but there does come a time when we can't do it, so you have to pay due diligence to when you can and cannot use this technique. You cannot just use it on every single client hope for the best. We have now just taken a section from the highest point of the head down to the top of the ear and we're going to elevate the hair out from the head. A 45 degree angle. Again, this time we will be working on the last 1/3 of the hair and we will be paying ultra close attention to not taking big chunks of hair from this section, because this is the section that will sit right on the top of the head. Now. I know a lot of you're going to be wondering how this grows out, but I, as I said in my intro, it grows out beautifully. You just need to be very careful about how you go about it. You do not want to angle your scissors diagonally into the hair, especially on these top sections. It is better to go over it several times and remove a small amount of hair each time, then it is to get impatient and remove a lot of hair very quickly through this side, section taken a two-inch section that is above the ear now, because in the Sides there is less hair. I'M going to elevate these sections 45 degrees from the head shape straight away. I'M going to work this section through that bottom. Third, the second section through the sides, will be worked in exactly the same way if the hair is particularly thick, though in this particular section, we can place it straight down to the head and work with the channel cutting that runs along the scalp. My hi Georgie has very thick hair, and in that section I find it works much better. Her hair sits much slimmer. If I take that weight away from that section on this top section again we're elevating the hair away from the head shape around 45 degrees higher than that is okay, but not necessarily necessary that sound like a mouthful. Didn'T a tongue twister for you they're not necessarily necessary as we work through this technique, we need to assess how much hair we are removing from the head. We cannot assume that we are going to take enough away. Nor can we assume that we can keep going at it until there's no hair every time you've cut a section. We need to feel for how much weight we have left behind. Remember this first section is 2 inches above the ear, and the hair is elevated. 45 degrees from the head shape. This second section will be done in a similar fashion, but then we will remove the bolt from the internal shape closer to the roots, to flatten the shape around the parietal Ridge. This works particularly well on very thick hair types, but be rest assured if the hair is not very thick, you do not want to be removing that much weight from that area. On your clients, hair. This technique does look scary. I can definitely agree with you there. If you're sitting there watching this thinking wow, I would never do this believe you me many moons ago. I'D have said the same thing, but if you practice you will love it, and here is the finished result the soft textured Bob. That is more one length than it is not, but has got the look and the feel of something that has been texturized, and I love this end result, as I said to you before it's one of my favorite ways of cutting a bob shape. That is one length, and the maintenance of this is so easy for the clients. I hope you've enjoyed this episode and if you have smash that thumbs up button, stay safe and I'll, see you again on Sunday for another episode of the life of half you

Julie O: I think this is exactly what I need. I’ve got thick coarse wavy hair and I hate having it layered because it’s only about shoulder length. My ends are impossible even with a fresh trim and the layers are visible because of my fuzzy ends. Sometimes I feel like the layers look like shelves.

Serena X: Amazing. THIS is exactly what's missing from the bob haircut I received and is the difference between a sophisticated bob versus a basic one!

•Copel•: I am not an official stylist but I’ve loved this little trick for doing quick touch ups on myself in between cuts. I am a guy and I have such annoyingly thick hair. In the States, I’ve heard this technique referred to as “slithering.” ❤️ your content !!!

Marie Dyde: I have extremely thick hair, and I always say that I will walk out of the next hairdressers who tells me" you have very thick hair"! I'm 67 and have lived with it all my life and have never had any issues as long as it doesn't get cut too short. I wish all hairdressers could see this video!!!

Ivy Blu: Thank you so so much for a very clear and detailed explanation❣ It did wonders on my thick hair

Brandon Wood: Thank you so much for sharing this technique! I practiced it and was able to finally use it on a new client and she absolutely loved it! You're the best!

Eunice Serrano: Wow, such a unique way of cutting thick hair! I thought it was brilliant

Julie Torres: James I've watched this video twice now. I can't wait to give it a go. Do you think this would also work on curly thick hair or can you suggest some other cutting/thinning technique. Thanks for all your videos!

Jane Smith: This is absolutely the best technique for getting rid of weight that I've ever seen! This is exactly what I've been looking for, where have you been all my life?! I'm taking this video to my hairdresser the next time I go. Thank you!!! You have a new subscriber!

Mary Wall: I’ve got the puffy triangle from hell that I can’t do anything with and it’s barely long enough to tie back. My kids are calling me Karen I’m in Devon so as much as I’d like to come to Brighton for a cut it’s a little out of my way! Can you recommend a stylist in this neck of the woods that could do for my mop what you’ve done is this video? Thanks

paul Davies: Superb James sooo Excited to try this technique! I use a similar technique but going Up the hair, it's called "whiting " I'm sure you've heard of it. It's something I learnt from Paul Mitchell education classes but this looks amazing stay safe all of you and thanks James

Ladynipchick2: I love the principle behind the technique. People are terrified of most thinning techniques. I'm growing my pixie out and cos hair is thick, I follow what the hairdesser was doing before lockdown. She was quite simply removing chu n ks with texturising scissors - and this made my growing haystack of hair lie more lovingly around my head. I think I may have overdone it slightly now, but not sure what to leave and what to attack as I head from short pixie to a very short bob (my current status). Any videos for this type of thing, growing hair down in a pretty way? X

Ange C: The hair looks fine when it is styled but from personal experience, such a thinning technique can turn out badly. It must be done by a very good stylist who isn’t too scissor happy, otherwise the hair can be easily damaged from heat styling. It took forever for my hair to return to its normal state. I’m very reluctant to thin my hair now, I ask for long layers instead.

craig bryan: During lockdown catching up on all your videos great content and clear instructions thankyou so much always learning

HeadHome: Wow great video. Subscribed. Gotta love step by step tutorials. What a blessing to have such content.

David Koloc: Simply stellar work. What a great looking cut.

Jhonna FontGd: It workeddd! I never thought id have thin hair hahaha now its easy to achieve blunt bobs

Liz Peters: Oh my, this is genius! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Madeline Krahn: Hi! Do you have any recommendations for salons that use this technique in NE London? In the US I usually have success in Latinx salons, but I'm a bit lost here. This is the technique I'm used to (or very similar types) and it's the only thing that makes my hair manageable.

sparklebox11: I ask my hairdresser to take the weight out of my bob so it can lie closer to my head especially at the bottom where it starts to make my overall head shape look like a triangle. Unfortunately he cut away my bob and left me with a completely different hairstyle. I'm frustrated that he didn't know how to thin out my hair yet keep my style. I think I will take your video to another stylist and ask them could they do this for me. It's too awkward to show to my current stylist because he'll probably think I'm correcting him. He just went overboard and kept cutting til I had no length left. I thought maybe it isn't possible to do what I asked but I can see from your video that it is, and I feel hopeful. Thank you!

Paula H: Wow this is a breakthrough, nicely done

Cleo Truffle: thank you, I am going to try this on myself because every time I tell a hairdresser to thin out my thick hair to look soft and wavy, it never ends up looking like this.

Anime after Midnight: I am the exact hair type and thickness as this client and I'm so happy I found a better way to thin my hair!

Juliette Donohue: thank you again for this video; how can I get my fresh speaking hairdresser to do this technique on my hair? as I have thick coarse hair, I'm always given layered haircuts, but now I have a bob with short hair on top and longer hair under, and I don't think I really like it My head always ends up looking like the shape of a triangle when it grows out... the result is lovely.

unicorn and dragon: Hi James.Thank you for sharing your experience with us again. It is very nice to see you again.God bless Xx

lindegirl 333: Love your channel..I’m not a hairdresser but I am interested on different styles and different cuts. Your so innovative ..

oo01010oo: Question! How does this cut grow out? I’d love healthy long hair so I chopped off my dry bits. I need a style that won’t damage my ends? Does anyone know if this is ok for ends?

wordellliz401: It really would have been helpful to see the finished result straight but great video otherwise

Marcials Blends Hair: SUPER INTERESTING!!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!!!!!

Alice Hebior: Now I know why my hair is frizzy when braided. I have to tell the hairdresser not to thin my hair all the time. It does not grow out seamlessly. Have had to go down to a pixie to grow out again because eventually it is a frizz fest. Slithering is the term I know this technique as. It was great for awhile.

Estera Nine: Ok but....(I have same question for people who use thinking scissors very close to the root) It’s been texturised from pretty much the top. And it always looks good straight after and even few weeks after. But how is it going to look after few months, when hair start growing and getting tad longer? It will start sticking out? Because would be impossible to texture exact sections next time

Beth Moore: Need this done on myself! Ughhh!!! Thick course hair here with a LONG BOB. Haven't had a haircut since Jan

Hels Heubner: Wow I'm going to do this as my hair is a short bob and so so thick so it looks like a mop. Thank you

E KN: lovely result! wondering if this technique would work for a pixie on really thick hair?

Andrea Gonzalez: Hi! Could I use this technique if the hair is already layered ?

lil_lianna: This is different to layering right? Because I've got quite a thick hair and whenever I want to get rid of some weight on the salon the only option they offer me is to have layers and I hate the look of it when they grow out sometimes causing fly aways which I Hate.

Antoinette Antoinette: Nice technique thank you

Kate Marlowe: I use channel cutting on my male clients that have thick hair. It gives the look of texture beautifully.

Stuart McRae: Thanks!!!!... can’t wait to do this!!..(did you use some sort of cutting lotion??)..✌️❤️

Shanah Mazzola: wow absolutely amazing technique..

Suzanne Lyle: It does indeed look very very scary. (I use Rusk texture shears and cutting techniques for bulk removal. Just makes me more comfortable)

M G: First time I have seen this after watching many clips. This may be just what I need.thanks

Sasha Fierce: Im not a hair cutter but this is how i cut my hair cos i have thin n big curly hair , looks good to me ,n salon lady cant do it for me,

Jacqueline Thompson: Hi James, would this work if the client wants to put their hair up asswell as down? Thanks Jackie.

A Fajardo: Was hoping to see how it looks like when dry & not yet curled.

TylerMyStyler: Thank you always for your wealth of knowledge

Anastasia Beaverhausen: This is fabulous.

rebecca muir: I do this,it’s awsome. What scissors do you use please?

Kay Rodri: 2:22 technique starts

candy zepeda: do you recommend this technique on thick curly hair?

Tatiana Muzichenko: Would it work for a pixie bob? I am afraid if the hair is to short it might stick out.

Meeshala Bird: I do this on my clients as well and it is the best

Gracie to the Max: The hardest, most saddest thing about watching your videos.... so disastrous and disheartening... not being able to try these techniques... because I’m quarantined and cant touch my clients!

Marcials Blends Hair: Happy Wednesday Dave!!!!!!! Watched the commercials all the way and I'm ready to watch the vid.

Mika Anderson: I’ve done this with my razor lots. But now I’m going to have to try this out. Thx

TrueGamerVed: Can I do this with thinning shears? Thank you

niche 123: When doing this technique try flipping your scissors so they are upside down in your hand. Much better angle and more comfortable.

Lisa Fanucchi: Love those plants!!!

Lisa Fanucchi: I have all my clients addicted to bulk removal ✂️ lol New subbie here ✂️✂️✂️

Cad man The hamster lover: What cutting Comb are you using here please? I’ve always used a matador number 4 comb for cutting but I like the look of your one!

Violetta: I don't understand why most hair dressers do not know how to thin out course thick hair without layering or using shears which really doesn't do much. Don't know what they learn in hairdressing courses. I'm not a hairdresser yet I know this is the way to do it even before i saw your video. I'm taking this video with me next time i go to a hair dresser.

enigma ian: i'm doing a hairdressing exam i'm studying children's hair a 10-year-old model with bob for drying without music and regular speed would it be possible?

Jaci Mckinney: Very cool!!

pinkroxysouthmead: This is exactly what I need trying to find someone like this in Bristol is impossible

Toni,s hair styles: Great video James liked and shared

parvin zarrin: Wow ! Nice cut can be done by razor ??!

enigma ian: a very detailed drying video only would be possible I am doing school and would like to learn well how to dry bob

Alice Hebior: I have coarse hair - maybe the texture is the reason I had issues with frizz?

Vashti Sookdeo: I usually thin with a razor but will try this nxt time

Michelle Emiliani: Can i do this technique on longer hair?

Mary Mary:

Christina Jones: James, James, James... I have a cpl clients that this will be perfect for...if we ever get to go back to to work in the salon!

Tahsin M.: amazing

: what is the name of this technique?

sari taylor: Hun cos this is cutting quite close to the scalp when it grows out is there chance of hair sticking out funny. I was always taught to never cut below bend in hair

Rina Mae: This looks way too scary to do at home at first I thought there was a chance but no way, it looks tricky

Laura Rose: How do I specify this to my hair dresser? what do I ask for? I want to show the video but I’m embarrassed!

Marylou White: génial merci so kind of you

witch mountain: Feel like moving to southern Spain and opening shop? Pretty pretty please!!!

Mhai19 Bande: is this allowed for curly and has a thick hair???

annette Sereno: How do you thin out short hair my hair is very thick and everyone just wants to shorten it is hard to find some who knows how to thin it out or as they now say texture

Nathalie Drilon: I wish you could show us the finish cut with a natural hairfall dryng... Not this wavy looks.

Anjali K: omg that was grreat!

Najla Ahmed: ✂️I what you did but the top Is not appear thicker than the middle ❓

Lisa JAN: Can you use a razor. Instead?

pavilion pavilion:

Taruna Mohan: Very good

Rain: I do it with my razor.

DANIELA: My hair always looks poofy because i have a lot of hair✋

Hina Malik: I want my hair cut from you but you are far away

Kandyce Canon: I don’t want a bob cut I wanna make it not a bob cut

Wendy Rathbun: We used to call this "channeling"

diaryofseresha: At first i thought it was mannequin sittin on chair literally the girl didnt even move her hand once n plus was stiff asf , creepy :x
