In this video I'm going to show you three ways you can wear a 1920s faux bob. Not all women were happy to cut their hair short when that became the fashion in the 20s. If they still wanted the silhouette, they'd wear their hair in faux bobs like this. Enjoy watching!

My name is Lucy, I'm a Dutchwoman here to offer an alternative approach to beauty.

On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!

I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.

You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.

Enjoy browsing!

Hey guys welcome to a new video. We are revisiting the 1920s today. Yes, we are, and in this video I'm going to show you three different ways that you can wear your hair in a twenty stashin when your hair is actually long. We all associate the 1920s with their short boyish bobbed, hair styles and those were very popular at the time but like in any era where short hair is popular. Not all women were super happy to jump on that and cut their hair short in all the decades forward to 20s super long hair was the norm, so I guess you can imagine that it was quite an extreme fashion to cut your hair at that short. For many women and many women struggle with it a lot, especially older generations and women, who were maybe a little bit more conservative, and that is why loads and loads of women actually were their hair info bobs. A wonderful modern example of this that I think many of you might be familiar with is the character Dottie. You don't Dorothy from miss Fisher's, murder, mysteries. She seems to have a bob all throughout the show, but then there are some scenes where she is in her night clothes where he can clearly see that she has a very long curly ponytail, and that is very realistic. As a person like her, who is a little bit more reserved and shy and traditional would definitely have not been super keen on cutting her hair short, the first hairstyle that I'm gon na show you today is actually how she wears her hair in at least some Episode of the show where you can see the back of her head, but before we get into that, I first need to curl my hair, of course, because the hair needs to be curled for this and we need a little bit of that finger wave action. So I'm gon na start by making a deep side parting in my hair and curling, my hair, with the smallest curling iron I currently have, which is this one right here, and the most important thing when you want to make cohesive waves in your hair, is to Go row by row when you are curling, so I'm going to be curling all of my hair in the same direction that I'm gon na pay a lot of attention to where my curl starts, making sure that I make my way back in rows. So, every time I finish, a curl, I'm gon na roll it up and pin it away with a little duckbill clip. So when I've done that, all over my head, I'm gon na give that a few minutes to cool down and while we're waiting from those curls. To said, I wanted to tell you a little bit about today's sponsor kiss. Today'S video is kindly sponsored by Ana Luisa, who made absolutely beautiful jewelry my favorite pieces are from them and they are running a Mother's Day. Sale Ana Luiza make absolutely beautiful, dainty jewelry pieces. In fact, most of the jewelry I wear in my videos nowadays is from them, and today I am actually wearing some pieces from their new collection. This necklace and this beautiful bracelet right here and I have one more beautiful, beautiful necklace from that collection, which I have worn for the past three days. I think consecutively, Ana Luiza as a jewelry brand, really focus on sustainability, which is something I value a lot. They have a goal to achieve a net zero carbon footprint by the end of 2020 and all of the goal that they use is reused. So it's love mind it's all recycled, which is absolutely fantastic because there is so much gold out there already. That is unused right now. The pieces are of an amazing quality, very long-lasting. I don't have any signs of world any of mine whatsoever, and I have had them for a while and for the quality that they are. The prices are really really good, starting at only $ 39, but they also have some higher-end pieces featuring lab-grown diamonds, there's something there for everyone, so absolutely be sure to check out their website, and, like I mentioned, they are running a Mother's Day sale and I feel, Like their pieces are absolutely perfect as a Mother's Day gift, so I will have a link in the description box below the video to their website, where you can go check that out, and they also have some really cute gift boxes. If you want to use this as a Mother's Day gift, so a big thank you to Ana Luiza for sponsoring today's video do be sure to check out the website. Their pieces are absolutely gorgeous and, let's move all with the hair cells. Alright, my curls have cooled down and set so it's time to knit them down and see the ringlets that we have to work with now. The Riddler's are looking good, so it's time for the hardest part, let's all pray to this circle, hairstyling also they let me do something that looks remotely like I've been away today. Let'S get started, I'm gon na brush this out and see what we get. I ask some nice and such curls, so I'm feeling hopeful all right. This is a good base to start with what we're going to have in all the hairstyles I'm going to start with is the beautiful finger wave type curl that is going to go along the top and sides of my head? If you guys know, this is something I'm not very good at I'm gon na try my best to make something acceptable, we'll just see how far I get with that. So I'm basically just combing and forcing my hair into this wavy shape, which is made possible by the trophy okay. So far, I'd say it's not too bad. I have somewhat of a wave going on what happens below I'd, say. Chin level doesn't really matter that much because we are going to do fo, obtuse or foe Bob's, but just to make sure that this space will be like this. After. I think that Eclipse I am going to spray this down with a lot of hairspray in an effort to make it last just to give this the opportunity to try and set and to make sure I don't ruin it. I'M going to leave my clips in while I work on the rest of the first hairstyle and for this first hairstyle I am going to be taking the bottom of my hair. I'M gon na brush this out just a little bit more make sure that at least the top is really nice and smooth with the bottom of my hair, I am going to form little pink curls that are going to make a row all along the nape of My neck kind of the Bob line - and that is going to create my faux bob. This is something that was done a lot in 20s. It'S a really easy way to hide, even very long lengths of hair and make it look like you have a bob, or at least to have that fashionable silhouettes, I'm going to start in the middle and work my weight outs. So I'm just taking some hair, and since this is already curl, it shouldn't be too hard to form a little pink girl, which i'm then going to all the way. Up to my hair right here, I'm gon na pin it down with a couple bobby pins and when you're doing this, you wan na sure to hide your bobby pins. Underneath the road don't really want to be able to see these, so it should end up looking something like this, then I'd say the next bit of hair over. Do the same thing encourage the curls to roll up, bring it all the way, see my hairline and bring it right next to that first girl, honey. So when you've reached the front curl the one that's next to your face, you can now decide how long you want the front of your hair to be. I like mine a little bit longer, so I'm not going to roll it all the way up. I also feel like this makes it look more like a up to you and less like a 20 spoke ball, so I'm gon na leave it quite long and about drawling and do the same thing on the other side, you should end up with something a little Like this and when you're happy with the way it looks, you can then take down your duckbill clips or whatever you use to hold down your curls. If you don't have these duckbill clips, then bobby pins work as well, anything that will hold down that hair. So here is your first option: it's a pretty basic nineteen threes, so Bob for people with long hair, but this is definitely something that women would have worn a lot back in the day. If you wanted, of course, you could accessorize this with different kinds of accessories. Just sliding it a little hair clip makes it a bit more visually interesting. I also have a scarf here, which is right when he's looking in my opinion, which you could wrap around your head. That'S for days when your waves don't turn out quite the way you had hoped. This is also something that would have been worn a lot in the Chinese as well before I start working on the second hairstyle, I'm just going to reinsert my duckbill clips actually to make sure that my waists survive this changing of having part of the hairstyle. The second style is quite similar, but instead of a bunch of little rules, I'm just going to make one large one. So I'm once again going to brush this hair out. So you make it come together, a little bit more and for one cohesive mass of hair. As much as possible, then I'm going to twist this and I'm gon na form a kind of long horizontal bond with it like that, and this I'm going to pin down to the nape of my neck. Okay. That should give you something a little similar to this. In the back so I'll take my clips out again there we go. There is another option that is just a little bit quicker to do. Then, the first option we did with old little buns once you have your curls. This is a matter of a couple of seconds to put up and also looks very cute and historically accurate. Now, of course, you could do the same thing, but make this fun out of a break. So in that case you would great the length of your hair. First and then switch that braid into a bun, but that's not the third hair, so I'm gon na show you today both of these that I have shown you so far have been visible. So it was very obviously a faux bob if there is also a way you can make this a little bit more subtle so that it actually looks as if your hair is schwarz and for that we are going to be turning the hair under. This is one method that won't work as well. If your hair is very long or very thick or both, especially with hair, that is about shoulder to waist length, this should work if it's not too thick, so I'm gon na brush it out again the back of my hair and I'm gon na be making several Rolls again and I'm gon na start in the center once again, it's quite similar to the first file actually in several ways, so I'm gon na make a roll first, hello, pin curl, but this time I am going to roll it under like that. I have my bat and I'm rolling it under, so that I now have a little rule here with a hole in the center and I can use that hole to pin this to the hair at the nape of my neck. So I'm going to insert a pipe in from both sides, so two in total, and that leaves me with a curl like this when I then go on to the next bit of hair and do the same thing. Okay, so there's the back and then with this front, hair we're gon na do the same thing, but you want to pay a little bit extra attention to this, because I feel like the front is usually the part that gives it away when you do a faux Bob now, luckily, the curls help a lot, but you still wan na just pay a little bit of extra attention to this and make sure it doesn't look too artificial. Now this method will generally give you a bit of a shorter bob and a bit more volume around the bottom. So it's you know up to your personal preference which of these methods you prefer, but this is what this looks like from all sides. Let me just accessorize this one with a little clip, so those were the three variations on a nineteen to expell bob, but I wanted to share with you today guys. I really hope you enjoyed this video and maybe found it helpful people don't forget to give a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel for loads, more beauty and lifestyle content. Don'T forget to check out Anna Louisa. I will have a link in these lectures to mow and measure things to them for sponsoring today's video. There is another video here that I think you might also enjoy. I can go watch next. Thank you for watching and I'll see you very soon in my next video bye,

catharsis: My grandmother would've loved to see that this generation of young girls would style their hair this way and not consider it outdated and boring.

BinaBecker: Very cute! These faux bobs even had a fun nickname, back in the day: nervous bobs (obviously, for women too nervous to bob their hair in earnest.) If you wanted the look but were too afraid to take the plunge and head out to the barbershop, this was the next best thing. PS: If you have a lot of trouble making the fingerwaves, there's a hack for that, too: Alternate the direction of the clips, so that some point away from your face, and others toward it. This makes sure that the dips and swells of the waves all line up neatly.

Chenoa Holdstock: I KNEW this was possible, but I didn't know how! Thank you!

Helena Roman: Such a cute video! Finger waves are hard...used to make me wanna drop out of cosmetology school, we were required to do like 20 of those successfully before they'd sign off on us. I went to that school for fun back when I was 15 and learned a finger wave trick. Start with damp hair, douse it in styling gel. Then "mold" the finger waves with your fingers as you did, then lock them in place with the clips and once you've done your head, blow it dry... then remove the clips, then gently comb through careful not to disturb the "waves." That's what we did when we didn't have time to pin curl. :)

The Edwardian Writer: These are so cool! Good tips for if I ever have to do a 20s thing. One of my favourite parts of Downton Abbey was that Edith never cut her hair and just sort of wore it in a bun with finger waves, and I definitely think the second method reflected that excellently!

magicattic: Also in Downton Abbey. In the last season, only Mary actually makes the chop, Edith, Lady Crawley, and many others, all did faux bobs.

Heismyrock3: In beauty school, when we learned finger waves, it was the hardest part! They were the bane of all our existences. You’re not alone in the struggle

Alyssa Rascon: Once again loepsie to the rescue! Thank you for this! I've been trying to do a 1920's faux bob and been failing miserably! These help so much can't wait to try them! ❤

MaryintotheWoods: Hey I'm a hairstylist And I love all of your hairtutorials, watching them now with short hair makes ne sad xD for the fingerwaves a tip(im german and trying my best to describe it): we always made the curls in horizontal rows, the first left turn, thenn the second right turn, then repeat. This way you create a deeper wave and you just can gently push them when you brushed them through und already have your wave without forming it by hands, that the way you do it when they are wet and are actual fingerwaves. Hope it works somehow.

Kirsten Paff: Me: Oh, that looks like Dot's hairstyle. Loepsie: A good example of this hairstyle is Dot from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.

S J: Thank you for this video! My grandmother wore her hair in the first style all her life. I've tried it a few times but, my hair is heavy and "crawls" out of any type pin or clip. I'll give it another go!

Callie Rose Martinsyde: I absolutely love that last style! I just got interested in doing 1920s historical costuming, and the one thing I really wasn't looking forward to was cutting off my waist-length hair. But the turned-under curls look easy enough to do and really do make the hair look like it's been cut short.

PumpkinBecki: Super-cute Lucy! And those fingerwaves worked really well. I adore Dottie These also reminded me of Lady Edith from Downton Abbey xx

Katie J.: These are so cute! I'm tempted to try this on my shoulder length hair!

courtcourtpickle: This video is so helpful! I'm designing hair for a show set in the early 1920's (trying to make a production work with safety procedures during quarantine) and all of my ladies have longer hair and don't want to do a chop (I really don't blame them, and definitely didn't expect it). I've been trying to find tutorials and videos that will be easier for them to go off of and use as reference, especially since some of them aren't hair-savy and I won't be styling their hair. This is definitely a video I'll be sending to them for reference! Thank you!!

Selkie Morien: These looks like the time for lesser or thinner hair to shine - can't imagine that working, if you have thick hair. And it looks very cute on you! :)

Sokka's Boomerang: I was looking for a good tutorial on these!! Thank you! Now I can finally live my weird combination of 60s to 70s clothing and 20s hairstyle :')

Dats ma boaaah: So impressed about how we could never tell it's a faux bob for the last one! Very nice job aha I'll try your second version of it because it's a bit more subtle and could be considered as a low bun (hair going past my waist, people would be shocked thinking i cut it off........) I love seeing how you Always stay historically accurate for absolutly every era, will Always be a pleasure to watch your videos

MORTICIA 1975: Beautiful! These styles look amazing on you! I cant wait to try these, too!

CherryLe Bee: This style looks absolutely stunning on you! Although most of the ones you do end up looking fantastic! I love your channel, thanks for the content! :D

skullstitch: This is absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much for posting this one. I've been trying to figure out how to do a 1920s hair style with my long hair, and I think this will work wonderfully!

ahmadeevasu: Oh, this is very pretty, I should try it! I like the way your bangs blended in those curls! And the video is so well-done: the music, the lighting, flowers in the corner - I enjoyed watching it from the beginning to the end! Cheered me up Thanks!)))

Carananga: Great video! I've been wondering how Dot can go from bob to long ponytail, since I've been rewatching the series lately xD

Grace Asher: I love this. I had to do this for an episode of Snapped and I enjoyed it. I had never done it before but I did your third option. It just felt "right" lol I wish I'd had a tutorial!! Imagine getting no hair when it had to look like a 50's bob and my hair isn't much shorter than yours But I did get makeup. I would've loved to switch that out

Annie N: I absolutely loved this video! Really inspired me. I always feel like doing my hair is going to take so much time so I never really do anything to it but videos like these show me that it's not that way! Thank you so much! Love your videos

songbanana8: I have been looking for a tutorial for Dot’s faux bob!! I bet you could get away with not curling the whole head. Thanks for the help!!

Mouse Bones: I love how approachable you make hairstyles. I have a lot of hair but it's both a lot and thin if that makes sense. To add to that it's gotten pretty long the last year. I've been having so much fun attempting to style my hair thanks to your videos.

Natalie Atkinson: This was an absolutely fantastic video- it's exactly what I've been looking for. Btw, I thought your waves were perfect, you're so good at doing a faux bob!

*Ariel*: omg thank you thank you! I’m currently patiently waiting until I can get my hair bobbed and it’s been rough so this will work great as a substitute!

Lys: Very beautiful! I love your videos, they feel so safe and peaceful

stéphanie: This is really helpful, I’ll definitely try it tomorrow!! Thank you

Charlie Angel: Fantastic job! Looks very authentic to the era! And it suits you! You look gorgeous! So does your hair! Thank you! I enjoyed that!

Katie Morrill: Beautiful!! I always struggle with these kinds of styles, thank you!!

Carrie M.: I love dotty and her hairstyle! Thank you so much for this video, I am growing my hair but I have this crazy quarantine desire of cutting everything, but i think with this tips i can just pin it short

cutex24: I love this, I have been re-watching all the Miss Fisher episodes recently and always love Dot's hair!

Deirdre Clyde: OMG you look so much like my grandmother! She was born in 1903. By the time I came around she had short hair, but she always kept that same silhouette to her hairstyle.

Véronique LaChatte: 20s style is so fun! I also have never dared to cut my hair short so the faux bobs are great!

Angela Petta: Love it, love it, love it. Great video with step by step instructions. BTW, thank you for the tips in your video about bangs. I finally got the look I was going for from your techniques. Cheers

WakeupGrandOwl: You knocked it out of the park, this has been your best execution of the styles and it's GORGEOUS on you.

Knot Lavi: Love this! You look so beautiful and elegant in a faux bob ❤

KateandBree: I really love the first one! It’s so cute.

Mark Inglese: Don't put yourself down so much! You are totally awesome.

Pinup & Nostalgia Image Creations: This suits you so well!! Love watching your channel, thank you for awesome content!

Beeza9419: You have such a talent with hair. This is really beautiful!

HeuteNachtIstMeinTag: That looks so cute on you. And the waves turned out so nice, too.

M A: Very cute! This certainly could double as 50s hair too

Lisa Simmons: I tried it for a 20’s Gala benefit I bet they will love it! Thx!

Sarah Andita Karina: I’m watching this while waiting for my tea to cool down. I’m going to put it on my hair following your previous video!

Pat’s Padd: Hello Loepsie and good footage thanks showcasing your various styles of a 1920s faux bob as they look beautiful and it would be fun if you did a bit of a black and white and sepia footage as it would look rather retro and I wondered if you’ve ever done hairdressing as I think you’d be good at it as you know lots of styles as I’ve seen in your previous videos so that’s all thanks for reading so take care stay safe and cheerio

Ralph Brincklow: This is so helpful!!! Thank you!

Knitandsew: omg yes!!! I do love a vintage bob but I really can't sacrifice my long hair for it xD

cathycva: Absolutely beautiful!!!

Anne Shirley: It's gorgeous!

Lucie Bouvard: I kept wondering how I could reproduce Dot's hairstyle ! Thank you :)

MituDjakarian: I love Dot!!! ^_^ She's so cute and I love her hair.

Liuba-huba-buba: It is easier to make these waves when you curl a top row in one direction (around the top of head), the next one goes in an opposite direction under the first row, then swap again and etc~ so the wave get shaped naturally, very small effort to shape the classic 20-s waves.

Selfie'storique: That was SO helpful, thankssssss !! :D

ChrisSunHwa: Actually, you look really cute with the tight ringlets as well as the finished style.

Vilma Lönneborg: I almost dropped my nail polish bottle when I saw your blouse because I have a very similar one!

Krystal Lights: The hairstyles are soo pretty!!!

Grace Kingsbury: My grandmother is hosting a Gatsby party this year for new years so I need to figure out how to do this

alienmasked: That hairstyle looks so good on you! Btw, where is your blouse from? It’s so pretty!

EmIEnGee: Thank you for mentioning Dot! Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries needs more attention!

Yuki 0-0: Ooo you should try to do a Judy garland look! (also love your channel)

Mochi: How long does it usually take you to do this hairstyle?

Carmen A.: Lovely styles.

angelicsailor: My favorite to do is the third one

Phoenix Uddin: Thank you for uploading. It‘s my birthday and I‘m turning 18 today.

Gabriel Hanssens: I'm actually looking at that video not for the faux Bob part but for the curling part: i'm obsessed with 1916-1917 fashion and i can not for the life of me find and article, magazine, tutorial or anything about how they did the beehive like updos in the late 1910s,the pinning part isn't that complicated (they mainly look like French twists, psyche or all of the updos from before in the decade where i actually have a lot of articles on) but what makes the updos look "1916" and not "fancy dress 60s mod grandma" is the cutting and curling of the hair and in that video you managed to have you front hair look almost exactly like a drawing from fashion without having all of your hair cut into a glorified mullet

Erica Procopis: Looks great!

sunita thind: Looks stunning but soo much effort with my thick long hair ‍♀️

Praiheda clark McCartney: Me encantó te amooo

Malakina1964: Well done. Very nice.

Heather B: I just need someone to teach me how to properly curl my hair i can never manage it on my own

Balletomane M: Hi Lucy! I love the hair clip you used! Where is it from?

Harper: That look really suits you!

Katie Duncan: With the finger waves, you look like Victoria Hamilton as the Queen Mother from the Crown!

Hudson1910: This is great! Thanks!

Hoki: You are a genius. ❤️

Elena Castella: The music is soooo cute! And you are sooo cute! And the styles are sooo cute

MM: Please do a beauty beacon of Colleen Moore she was a 1920s film actress and I have seen some beautiful hairstyles in Pinterest particularly one where she wears a headband with a bob similar to you

Jody Hakala: Good job I was wondering what hair products you used.

Aisha Malone: We’ve got a twenties murder mystery on Zoom next week, how did you know?

Gracie Ayers: This video is perfect thank you!!

barbie lee: You are the sunshine to my morning!

MoonyButt: Very ladylike indeed!

Marina Phillips: You look like an actress from a movie! Beautiful girl!

pamela thompson: Beautiful

Valerie Bartz: Oooooooo how cute!!!!!

stop looking at my screen: Can you do a Tatiana Romanov tutorial from when she was around 18?

Rowan Dawn: Would this work with naturally curly hair? Or would it be better to put in these types of curls?

BITCHESA QUEEN: Faux bob is my fav but the process is ugh!

Kara: Hi Lucy! Did you see that there's a Miss Fisher's Crypt of Tears movie!? I just found it tonight :) I thought you might be interested.

Carmen A.: very nice, thank you.

Glitterstar: my very straight thin hair is not going to like me practicing this every day lol

P: *your literally so beautiful!*

Emerald Jade: these are so pretty! u rly have the face to pull these off ^__^ u look like a time traveller! :0

Keir Boulton: Do you think this will work with hair that goes down past your waist?

MM: What curling wand do you use in in the market for a one and I see you use it a lot and for a variation of styles

El Squinko: We STAN Miss Fisher in this household
