This video is a bit longer, but I hope it's worth the watch for you! I feel like braiding toddler hair is quite a bit different than some hairtypes because of how fine it is. In this toddler hairsyle tutorial, I'll show you how to do a front french braid. This is the best place to start in my opinion. You don't have to do the whole head, so it won't take as long and it can be done on very short hair as well. If you need more practice and don't have a patient toddler, you can invest in a mannequin until you get the hang of it. I've seen them on Amazon for about $20.

In this video, I also go over a very important aspect before you even start the braid and that is PREP! If you prep the hair well and it's very smooth, it will make your braiding experience better. I show and tell you how I hold my french braids and I'm hoping that part makes sense for you. When I learned to braid, holding the braid was half the struggle. Now it feels natural, but it took a lot of practice! Below are some items I use when I braid her hair, so make sure to check that out!

All right, so the first thing that I'm going to do is wet down to her hair a little bit, and it just makes it a lot easier to do this toddler and baby type hair is really fine. It can be hard to work with and quite slippery. So I always wet it down and you'll see this. If you watch some of my other videos, I don't want it super wet, but I want it damp and then a lot of times. Your hair is somewhat snarly. So every time that we do it, I use a little bit of leave-in conditioner. So I'm just going to spray some of that in to help with the tangles and then we're going to use our wet and dried brush ultra to pump her or to brush her hair out once I've got it all brushed out. I'M going to put just a touch more water on it and then I'm going to go to it with a comb. This comb has whiter teeth on one side and narrower teeth on the other side, and I'm going to go through with the white side and just make sure that the hair is really smooth. So I am going to section off an area kind of in the front and middle here. Alright, I'm going to secure this all back in an elastic now, so this is out of the way, since I am just working with the front section to start this braid I'm going to take a small front piece and section it off with a comb as you Can see the hair is damp and I'm going to split it into three now I hold my French braids from the top. Some people hold it from behind. It just depends on what's comfortable for you and I'm going to start by taking my first finger and my pointer finger and crossing it over the middle strand. Now you can see I've got this middle strand in between the second and third finger here. That'S the kind of hold it in place until I grab it with this first and second finger again. So I'm going to grab this with my first and second finger again and the end I'm going to hold with my down with my pinky. It seems kind of confusing at first, but the more you do it the easier it gets. So, first and point your finger, add this piece over the middle and then I'm going to pinch it with my first and third finger and I'm going to grab this piece again with my first and second finger. Okay, now, the next time we go to braid. On the other side, I'm going to take my first and pointer finger again cross it over the middle and this time after I've crossed over the middle. I am going to take my pointer finger and kind of slide. It along to part a small little section of hair here and I'm going to bring it into the middle, and then I'm going to make sure it's nice and smooth. This is when it's really important to have nice combed out hair. You can even continue combing it as you go to make sure it's smooth so that you don't get bumps along the way and then we're going to go back to this other side again I'll. Take my first and second finger. Add it to the middle and see already I've got a little snag here, so I'm going to kind of work it out and comb it out just a little bit so that it's nice and smooth. When I add my next piece in so I'll, add the next piece in making sure that it's smooth bring it across and you'll pull it tight as you go and just make sure this piece is nice and smooth as you bring it in okay, first and second Finger bring it across the middle and then I'm going to take my pointer finger. Some people use a comb on this part. I'M adding a comb for me. Just makes one more thing that I have to hold in it. It'S hard to part it out. I'D rather just use my finger and kind of part a section, so we've got that part to the middle, make sure this is smooth coming over and then first and second finger again bring it over the middle, and you can even pull this other side to keep It tight and then add a small piece of hair again on that side and I'm submitting these ends down to as I go. I just don't want it to get tangled, because it looks so much smoother, smooth that out part off a piece with your pointer finger and add it in pay attention to how I'm holding it between these fingers, and it will really help a lot. Another thing is when you're learning to do these braids take your time. I'Ve got a fairly patient toddler, but don't try to do like a triple a triple braid right at first or something pull that tight, bring this side across again and, like I said before, if you need to comb the tails of this hair out and the rest Of that hair, take your pointer finger slide. It along grab a piece of hair and try to grab barely even pieces of hair. As you go same thing again, I'm going to bring it across and that second and third finger keep pulling it tight. Now her hair is starting to dry, so I might now just a tiny bit of water just makes it easier to hold and easier to work with. So it's not so slippery and you'll just continue doing this until you run out of hair to add in okay. So I'm almost out of hair to add in and whatever you part it off is the hair that you lied in. If I split it down the middle to do like pigtail, french braids, then I will add all of the hair from this side and all of the hair from that side until you have no more hair to add in and continue to keep it tight. I think I'm about out of hair here we're going to pull this tight got one more little section to add now at this point I am out of hair and I don't want to add any more of this hair because I'm just doing a little front for It French braid, you can continue braiding with a just a regular 3 strand, braid all the way down to the bottom, but for this style I'm actually going to secure this part off with an elastic just going to use this elastic down here. So I will secure this off an elastic, so that is a basic front. French braid! If you have any questions, please let me know and thank you for watching.

Their hair will look a little oily and wet for a few hours but soak it up. I prefer the Shea Moisture Hibiscus detangling spray for my daughter's lightly curled hair.
