School Responds After Video Shows Girl Sent Home Because Of Her Hair

A Louisiana Catholic school is facing backlash after a video showing a young black girl being turned away because of her hairstyle went viral.

Sixth-grader Faith Fennidy can be seen wiping her eyes and leaving Christ the King Middle School dejectedly after being told her extensions are against school policy in the video.

Her brother Steven posted Facebook video, which has been viewed more than 2 million times. His post said there are practical reasons for the hair extensions.

Naomi King: What does her hair got to do with her education? Nothing wrong with her hair at all and she's beautiful too! That was so mean and wrong on so many levels...

Well mind Your business: Schools: We don’t care about sexual assault, bullying or suicide Also schools: *the hair will distract the students and needs to be fixed*

Marla Mescudi: Lol, that's a protective style for natural hair. They're acting like she's walking around school with a 40inch sew in.

Danni K: My high school tried this, saying my colored braids was ”gang related” never have I ever seen my mom head to a school so quick to correct them. She let them know you will NOT tell me or my child how HER hair should be. IF other children can come with colored hair then she can COME with colored braids. If we need to go to the district to address this let’s get a date. They dropped off after that.

Squiddy: What a nice way to destroy her self esteem! Some people don't understand how children develop and yet work with children.

Busch Wacker: I thought her hair was pretty, very well groomed and i will bet she is well mannered as well... ♡

SLUTESHA09: I wish they would be quick to tackle bullying in the school and leave kids hair alone!

sweetness Ford---not my pic: Her hair was nicely done , all one color,, far from a distraction.... uncalled for, plus it saves her time from having to do it in the morning or at night

Sharla Eddings: What does her hair have to do with learning

Kimora Brown: This happened to me because I wore my naturally curly hair out by itself because I normally wore a bun... my teacher was already racist but I didn't think she was gonna say anything about my hair. when I walked into her class she stared at me for like 5 minutes. then she called me and I was scared to walk up to her from what happens on the daily bases... she said "Kimora go to the principals office" and I said "why" she said because your hair is inappropriate I walked out of the class and called my mom. my mom came uo to the school and went off

Charlie Wels: Who in the hell is looking that hard at the girl hair ? Damm

Windy 616: There is so much more in this world to worry about than the way a someone decides to fix their hair. It's just hair not a distraction. It is really none of anyones business. That should be between her parents and her.

M Arce: The most ridiculous thing I ever heard. She looks beautiful and presentable.

Excellent Efimer: If being sent home is what they did to bullies, the school system would be WAYYYYYYYYY better but of course Schools need to worry about more *"important"* things like *hair* and *clothes*

Bre anna: That’s targeting black students, everyone knows braid extensions are a part of our culture. They’ll probably have an issue with an Afro too.

Dianne Schuman: Schools should not have a say in how students wear their hair (unless they somehow manage to incorporate foul language or hate symbols into their hair style)

jizzncookies: That school is awful ☹️ we literally need these types of hair styles to protect our hair

Daniel Ewenkhare: Her hair is GORGEOUS, they should’ve NEVER sent her home

K C: This school should be proud to have such a beautiful extremely well-presented student, whoever makes up these dumb rules and then enforces them by berating this gorgeous young woman should be fired. They have no place in a system that is supposed to give care, support, and educate young people. If that was my child, I wouldn't be lost not knowing whether to send her back or move her to a real school which would also be traumatizing to this young woman as she would have to leave her friends. I would be so freaking angry with you, I don't feel I could control myself in a dignified manner when approaching you to discuss how appalling, inappropriate, damaging and traumatic your actions are/have been.

luviiixo_ xo: Even though this was a year ago this shouldn’t happen to anyone no matter who it is we are all equal!!

Bored Weegie: I've NEVER heard of this in my life..There are tonnes of kids with coloured hair,,extensions etc all over the world.. Education should be the MOST important part of anyone life NOT aesthetics..disgusting school board

Babygal333: Schools usually have rules on their student's appearances and uniform to have a positive look on the school (especially a catholic school); for example, colouring their hair in unnatural colours and putting on tons of unnecessary makeup. But this school's actions on this beautiful girl with beautiful hair was just wrong. The hair looked gorgeous and sending her home CRYING was such a dramatic and needless thing to do. The school deserved the criticism and needs to realise the choices they made could've been avoided with such a better outcome.

H K: Y'all aren't even considering how expensive a gorgeous look like that can be!!!!

Dionne P: This is why the USA is wayyyy behind in education. Their focus is clearly not in the books! Weirdest message I've never heard!!!

Rose Bayliff: The ‘natural hair only’ rules remind me of dresscodes, specifically the ones geared towards females. It’s a sexist system that wants girls to feel bad about themselves and treats them like sexual objects. The school system needs to be changed for the better because we are *not* distractions!

Asmaa Ahmed: There's nothing wrong with keeping your hair in a style that's easier for you. Even though I don't have really coily hair, I wouldn't want to style hair that requires a lot of time. If they let her wear extensions, she would have MORE time to do hw soo....

Chris K: This makes me sick. I'm embarrassed by my race when things like this happen.

lisabeth crawford: Now as a master colorist and i have also worked with human hair extensions, this is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard of! Human hair extensions purpose is to make the hair appear to be either longer and/or thicker. How did the school know? My guess is that some other green eyed little classmate snitched her out! I see nothing wrong with hair extensions as long as they are done in good taste.

S O: There is a clear motive behind that rule. I hope we all can see it

Tsu Nami: Imagine being a teacher and sending a student home for her hair. what a disgrace

Yousless1: Perfect example of a school bullying its students. She's a beautiful young girl, really doing nothing wrong, never informed of new policies. Leave her alone and do your damn job!

Red Fox: Such a beautiful girl, it's a shame this is still happening.

Michelle Padilla: I’m glad the parents took her out of that school. Her hair looked beautiful it wasn’t out of control it was beautifully done. Shameful a school is making young kids cry because of her hair.

Z0MBiE QUEEN: It's her HAIR gtfo does if effect her education? NO.. Does it effect other kids? NO.. Is she hurting anyone? NO.. Then why in the hell does it matter?

I. I.: If schools keeps doing that the children will think there is something wrong with their hair. And that's just messed up.‍♀️

Kylel Manofsteel: Too many degrees, not enough compassion or common sense for these so called policy implementers.

Not So Random Komaeda Fan18: I’ve been to school after bleaching and dying my hair blue with no issues, what tf was wrong with this girl having extensions?!?!

Xily: Nothing is wrong with her hair it’s beautiful! <3

Shirley Hollins: I have seen kids with blue, yellow and bright red hair at school, hair standing up on their head, but I never seen a child sent home because of braids. This is extreme racism.

NYRM1974: I saw the female student for hair is within proper form quite conservative and I don't know why this school is making a big deal over how a person wears their hair. If that was my daughter I would just yank her out of that school and put her in a better school. The school's policy is unacceptable and must be changed.

Avocado Einstein: That’s Rude! Going Home Just Because Of Hair Style?! That’s Just Wrong!

Jacque Jac: I went to a school 20 yrs ago that banned anything but 'natural' hair. Their excuse was because poorer students might not be able to afford extensions or dyes & might get bullied... Still, the policy wasn't strictly enforced.

Ivory Coffin: Okay, how the hell did you even tell they were extensions? Did someone pull her hair to check? When schools say "natural hair" it usual means hair color. My school had that rule, like you couldnt dye your hair blue or whatever. But adding extension, like wtf, there are so many more important things to worry about than a baby girl getting her hair done

Byron Mouton: There was a time we had rules and we abided by that discpline. I had to cut my hair which was long before i graduated and i respect that now because i received a good education at a catholic school.

jkmo3000: That’s how my school is too.. they don’t want us wearing making, fake hairs, we can’t change anything on us including trimming up eyebrows and stuff. Even our uniform has to be a certain length along with a specific type of shoes, heel height and a lot more including what you can wear in your hair

cribbles ': My best friend from school was African. Her hair was beautiful. One day she came to school with her natural hair. Which was a pretty dope disco frow. She became popular because of it. Even when we would go out at lunch old ladies could not resist asking about her natural hair. This a damn shame. Allow the kid to have her natural hair. Also this is a time for them to experiment with their own style. This is dumb af. Why can't we send home that greasy kid who plays games all the time in class.

Shawn K: I'm am caucasian and that girls hair looked well groomed. she was lovely in her appearance. God bless you Dear!

K. C: Simple answer to the sudden send-home: they didn't realize it wasn't her hair until somebody "clued them in". I'm disappointed the school didn't have a better procedure for dealing with the student, though. A simple matter of calling the parent / student and giving them a deadline for removing the hair extensions would have worked fine without the controversy. The school policy is nothing unusual, but their handling of a low-key matter was lousy.

niteweo: Hair shouldn't matter, and no matter how you wear your hair, natrual or not, it shouldn't matter and you should be proud of your hair.

Sonja Washington: Some extensions are real human hair, and are therefore natural hair! I doubt the school administration can tell the difference, you'd have to be a professional to do so. This is more racism in it's purest form!!

Breona Baughman: what girls go through at school: girls cant wearing clothes to their liking and expressive themselves can't wear their hair they way they want cant feel free and be seen as who we are as a human constantly judge for no reason Honestly school is a waste of time we are all going to die anyway it's sad but true schools dont give no fucks until it's too late to make change but proceed to do more damage in the upcoming years i wish everyone the best and keep pushing forward we'll get there eventually

Sonny: It may have been the rules, however the rules were clearly in the spectrum of racism and discrimination. To say that her hair (which is what she was born with) is not "acceptable" and she needs to conform her god given birth traits to seem "less then of a distraction" or even "threatening" in these educators eyes is quite absurd. Even a blind man can see that her hair posed no threat of either accusations.

usernameisonroids: I was send home from school because of my hair. And I walked all the way to home because my mom was busy. It was really embarrassing

Lord Darth Deth: The over all problem with the institutional and systemic racism is that whenever a person of color shows any pride in their ancestral heritage, whether in form or fashion, we are deemed to be threats and/or militant --- particularly when it concerns the standards of beauty and being. We've always heard throughout our lifetimes that "imitation is the highest form of flattery". This is an axiom whites take the extreme to the point of imposing/forcing/enforcing this notion on the melanated population. It reinforces their notions of whitd supremacy. When you are trying to look and act like them, they are comfortable. The retain their esteem as leaders/rulers of this society and will not tolerate anything or anyone who challenges them by contradiction of the pre-established standards set by them. We will NEVER have peace as long as they exist and in power.

Soltice 1111: When the school system in United States cares more about hair style and uniform than education

Illusion271: I don't see a problem with her hair. It's done beautifully. In school when I was younger the only rule we had was that if you had long hair it had to be tied up and that was only to keep it out of the child's face and to help stop the spread of nits.

concious2: In this case I agree with the school and I get what they are doing! Kids today in public school what they wear can be a distraction, this is not a public school and they are trying to limit the distraction of what can and do happen with girls and women adding hair! Her hair may not be outrageous but where do you draw the line? Who judges she is ok but you have too much, better to not allow across the board! I think if she had a medical problem and was causing a problem they would have accommodated the family and work with them as they said! Parents had choices and they decided to remove from school which was their decision which I also say was ok! Peace

GrimRepeatte: I wear my hair in braids to school almost everyday (no extensions, because it’s Haram and all that) and that’s what people normally compliment me for that Lots of other girls in my school use braids (tho most of them use extensions) and some of the guys to Basically what I’m trying to say is that my school is accepting when it comes to appearance and other schools should be too

Nicki Snyder: I am a white girl who wears my hair pretty much the same way as this girl in a high pony tail....why cant she?? This is outrageous!

Jalyn Wishem: I’ve only wore fake hair twice in my life, and if anyone would have told be I couldn’t graduate or so to prom because of it I would snap

Muslimah Afiz: They want natural? Go back with a fro!

sham421: “Christ the king” tells you all you need to know about this school.

Lxperron: These schools need to stop overstepping their boundaries. They are there to teach thats it. It is not their place to decide what kind of hair students should have or look like. These people need to either learn their place or be terminated this is disgusting.

Green Eyes: Id raise hell if that happened to me or my kids. What was even wrong with her hair?? It looked fine to me. A well groomed young lady ready to learn!

ThisisBerrie: THIS IS SO EVIL! LET LITTLE GIRLS HAVE THEIR OWN HAIRSTYLE! WTF IS A HAIRSTYLE GONNA DO?

Cj: They're teaching intolerance more than the love of Christ.... how shameful.

laszlo ♡: I love how old hag teachers force us to go to school and don't even let us come to school with any hairstyle we please. What does hair have to do with a good education!?

Chanel Cupcake: I was expecting to see a long luxurious weave or some colorful neon braids That hairstyle looks neat and cute! I'd totally let her rock a massive fro the next day if I were her mom

crafts and stuff: I think everyone needs to leave everyone else's hair alone unless there is a lice problem, then they can go home a get the shampoo.

HelenHighwater: Good grief these school officials need to lighten up. Her hair is very nice and not extreme. I had a classmate in public school in the 1960's who dyed her hair a different color about every month. Falls and wigs were also in style and practically everyone wore them. We did have a conservative dress code and it was followed.

lily blu: Yes let's continue to strip the kids of individuality and make them conform to a give mind. How 'bout y'all just teach them and not worry about their hair, which was perfectly acceptable btw

Christs Warrior: This is sick even if nobody had been sent home. If I were a parent of a student of this school, I would change schools immediately, after new rule. What kind of rule is this?!....just sick

Patti Howell: That wasn't fair! Unbelievable, I think that school is out of order! That's so true how can they say her hair is extensions? She must of been so embarrassed, poor girl! Well idk

Lisa S.: It’s painful to see a young girl cry! I hope my smile cheers you up!☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

vintagechild 44: Compliance more important than education! Glad they got her out, we can see what the foundation of this colonial education is, obedience and compliance.

Merilyn Freeman: Can't believe this even happened. Her hair isn't distracting and the school went to far. Hair policy is not something this school should apply to anyone. How do did they know she had extensions...you checked every single student on the 1st day of school? Racism is getting out of control and this os disgusting.

Illyrian Warrior: No one gets distracted the only one who does is the teacher ‍♂️ I hate schools and teachers sometimes I swear

mig0171: What’s wrong with her hair it looks beautiful

Lady Ivy Vine XIII: I don't care if it's hair extensions, neon green dying or henna red. A student's body is their own business and this school has no right to be sending her home for a simple weave that a lot of black women use. Btw, that protective and no-chemical option IS deemed more 'natural' by my friend from the Caribbean and is a hell of a lot healthier than a straightening perm.

carmved: There are little kids who dye their hair wear wigs and much more yet they dont get noticed at all

Curtistine Miller: Hair has nothing to do with learning .The mere fact that she has extensions has nothing to do with anyone some people need to add on to look thier best nothing is wrong with that!

Marlenys Reyes: It’s not about a girl’s hair. It’s about getting an education! How educational what what they did to that beautiful child? Some people just have a disgusting heart. Her hair looked perfectly fine!

Smidge: That reminds me of the time I got detention just cause my sweater was gray and not blue. The only one who was complaining was my English teacher luckily she left my high school but it was still ridiculous at least I wasn’t wearing my anime hoodies.

M D: the best lesson this school teaches students: be yourself no matter what! and also school is not a beauty sallon.

Beryl Morgan: I commend her parents for removing their child from that school..

Ever After: Guys am I missing something? What's wrong with her hair

Rainbow Shortcake: Did she show up with knee length neon blue extensions covered in glitter? NO! A rainbow 8" spiked mohawk? NO! (Because those might actually be a bit distracting). She went to school with perfectly beautiful, normal, appropriate hair. Schools need to focus on education and leave the fashion policing to parents.

Angela Maria: Do people know how difficult, time consuming and expensive is to maintain type C hair(curly, coily, kinky)? It is not the same to wash and comb or not even comb type A and maybe B hair (straight and wavy)as to type C hair, it is an enormous effort that takes hours to complete, so this girl sent home because of her pretty braids tied in a pony tail its really insensitive.

Earl Rogers Jr: I’m always amazed when I read complaints about appearance in private schools which the parents have agree to follow school policies before they paid theirs money for theirs children too attend which does not make sense to me. I feel if they don’t want to follow the policy in private schools whether it has to do with clothing or hairstyle that is a private school. They made the choice to send theirs children there when they could have went to a public school I would not have had that problem. Before someone says it’s part of their culture that’s a lots of BS.

Tommy G: The Army tried this same type of targeted “policy” and that didn’t work out too well for them. I hope she gets enrolled in a school that is more focused on her education than he hair style. As others have said to wish school were this dedicated to stopping bullying which is serious detriment/distraction to learning.

Vernon Blyden: It wasn't applied to all student when you know only a specific group of students wear extensions. If the rule is not equally applicable to all students then it's prejudicial and bias towards the student that it is applicable to.

Narrow Pather: So everyone should have to wear their hair EXACTLY as it grows out of their head then. No dye, nothing but hair. Some folk still think they own people and can tell them what to wear and how to look. Ignorance ... Sheesh! The things we deal with during a day of just trying to live life.

Tosca Tattertail: What does a girl having a well put together style that uses extensions have to do with anything? The braids are not hanging in her face, they are not hanging down below her hips where they might become a tangling issue (hair gets caught in door or tangled in chair or something). If you are going to make a policy like that in a private school you better have a really good reason. (only thing i can think is if you have an entitled wealthier student flaunting their style in the face and taunting a less well off student like the bully many entitled children can be)

Roycinda Alexander: Ridiculous!!!I cant believe this is still happening

Charmaine Gibson: the same thing happened to my son

Sharon Todd: Isn't it funny? How a Christian school can behave and be so un- Christ like? Would our Savior treat a little girl this way?

Shamayne Watson: This is a big problem in the Caribbean schools, I was also sent home for my hair a number of times. I just dont get what the big deal is about hairstyles.

Jim Knight: When the school put out the rules for the school year, one must obey them. But when they forget some of them the school should have to allow for some adjustments. Now if the rules have been there since the very beginning then don't cry just do what it says. Many of times I was sent to the bathroom with a razor to shave off my mustache I dealt with it. So even though the rules weren't there in the very beginning stop your crying deal with it.

KyssedByFyre: ~NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN~ I'm a white woman. Got in trouble for MY HAIR in the 80s at a Private Christian School. Parents had to come up there and everything. I just didn't make the news. I cried quietly in my room by myself since social media wasn't really a THING yet...

parad0x.: literally in my school if your hair isn’t well groomed or tied up, it’s either you get low grades or get a warning slip. And if it’s not naturally dyed, they’ll sent you home.
