Are we canceling hair oils? You see the discourse surrounding hair oils has reached an all-new Peak. There is an increase of curly hair stylists on the internet. That will swear that oils do nothing good for the hair, but that they suffocate the hair blocking out water, leading to dryness, breakage and overall unnecessary damage, but on the other hairs for literally thousands of years, the practice of hair oiling is a sacred one of self-care Meant to nourish the hair, it leaves you to think which one is it. I am your main gramel and I am going to butter your brains with the Necessities. Is it necessary to use hair oils in your routine and, if so, which one should you be using? As a licensed stylist myself studying trichology we're going to look to the science as we do regularly now, if that all sounds interesting and to you, I am new. I hope you subscribe to this Channel and you'll want to hit that Bell button to turn notifications on, because we post new videos on this channel each and every Thursday that you want to see this one has been very high, highly requested. So without further Ado, let's get to it. What is so controversial here is what some curly hair stylists are saying versus what science says voiced by me very respectfully, absolutely no disrespect to any of these stylists. We just need to clear things up a bit all that oil that you are putting in your hair is [. __ ], your hair up oils, don't give moisture, you know water can, and so we are aiding to always increasing their hydration. Not always you don't always want to increase the moisture content in the hair, especially if it's damaged, hair, damaged hair is more porous and water will be even more damaging to it. So those raw form oils they're just sitting on top making it harder on wash day to really thoroughly get our hair cleansed coconut oil as an example does not just sit on top of the hair. It is a penetrating oil which we'll talk more about in a minute, but specific. Typically, we use it to help prevent protein loss in the hair, which can happen due to excess washing and to protect the hair from swelling too much underwater. But speaking of castor oil. It'S really not my favorite either. It would be so awesome, be so cool they do if you use the right ones, because there's a difference between penetrating and non-penetrating AKA sealing oils. These lines look good when it's in the hair, because it's masking what is going on, but at the same time it's preventing the water from getting into the hair, which, in certain scenarios, is exactly why we would want to use them. It gets in there. It can't get out because the hair needs some sun, some air. I need some water water you'd be ready to graze. The protein structure of the hair air pollution provides oxidative stress and water, such as hard water, sea, water pool water, all swell the hair, as well as can deposit some heavy minerals and some nasties that we don't need. So all of these things are damaging and you have to jump to a clarifying shampoo, which is super aggressive, this detox process. This is a one-time thing. You cannot continue to use heavy oiled product lines and detox your hair on a weekly basis. Ideally, there's nothing else to clarify because you're going to stay off the bad stuff, and we don't need to do this again. Detoxing or clarifying your hair is not a one-time thing because of our earlier points. There are many things that we need to cleanse from the hair regularly, which might not be weekly, but at least bi-weekly basic science. Oil does not mix with water and water is the foundation for hydrated texture. Yes, curls. Look they're chunkiest, they're juiciest when they're styled with a lot of water and moisture. But again there is such thing as too much of a good thing and in hairs that are very porous that will absorb that water and look really juicy. They won't be able to hold on to it, leaving your hair even drier than it was before now. You'Re gon na have to do what add more oils to kind of like cover up that dryness. Oils do not add moisture, but oils maintain the moisture levels in your hair. It'S a downward Synergy. That'S just going to leave you with a bunch of busted ass hair oils do not dry out the hair. They do not clog. Your follicles and your Styles aren't lasting because you're using oils, you might just be doing your hair routine incorrectly, and none of these stylists are necessarily incorrect. This is just a very confusing narrative, and I think that the main reason why these stylists are sharing these tips and tricks is because, most importantly, the main bottom line issue is that people are not properly cleansing. That is the true lesson that these curly hairstyles are trying to teach, and I absolutely agree, but in favor of oils, applying them regularly has been shown to enhance the lubrication on your strands, reduce combing Force for wet conditions, AKA reducing friction when you're washing your hair. So great as pre-poo treatments, penetrating oils like coconut oil, can prevent Hydro fatigue the damage due to swelling they prevent breakage by reducing protein loss and they reduce the formation of split ends in the hairs. Thank you me and oils go like this. You just got ta know how to use it, oh and they also add shine to it. So on that note, there are clearly benefits to using oils, it's just about how you're using them and not misusing them and abusing them. But that's why we're here to learn so now that we've gone the controversy out of the way the curl traversing? Let'S get to studying, take out your notes, the different types of oils that you're going to use for your scalp and hair are going to depend on your hair's needs, and we are only going to be speaking about hair care because scalp needs scalp. Health is a whole different thing, although we treat our scalp in our hair care routine. We need to treat it more like a skincare routine, because these are very different structures, so to benefit your lengths, we're going into penetrating versus sealing and the thing that differentiates these is their properties. You see an oil like coconut oil is not just one ingredient. It'S made up of many different things that affects how it interacts with your hair, and that goes for all oils. Oils may be polyunsaturated, saturated or monounsaturated, and typically oils that are saturated and monounsaturated. I know this is getting a little hectic. We'Re going to simplify things. Really quickly, but the ones in these two categories are the ones that diffuse best into the hair and by diffusing into the hair, I don't mean with their blow dryer I mean this is what makes them penetrating now. The best oil for penetrating into the hair strands is, can you guess it have you been listening who's, calling it's coconut oil? Are you Coco about the nuts coconutty? I know how typical, but it has been studied time and time again and the benefit again is that it's going to reduce protein loss from the hair. So if you have bleached damaged and color treated, hair and you're medium to thick or your hair isn't weighed down very easily, this is 100 the best option for you. If your hair is super fine and easily weighed down another option, for you is babasu oil, babasu or babasu, I like babasu. Actually I like how that sounds. This oil has very similar properties, but is a little bit lighter in both cases. The time to use these is before shampooing. These are not oils that you need to leave on your hair for extended periods of time, especially if you live in cold climates, for example, I'm in Canada, it's currently winter. If I put coconut oil on my hair, you know warm and melted indoors when I step outside it's going to solidify and that's going to leave my hair looking kind of dull and dry and feeling heavy and greasy, especially if it didn't have time to absorb into The hair, so these oils aren't something that you need to leave in it's best to use an hour or two or possibly overnights, before washing your hair. The longer you leave them on the more time, they'll have to soak into your hair, perfect and ready for my poo and if you apply heat you'll further Aid in that process, just to help really melt and soak it all in and what you might find is That your hair is actually softer, shinier and holds moisture better after washing and styling, and it's because it helps prevent too much swelling and stress and further damage on the hair strands. That is the main reason why you would want to use a penetrating hair oil before washing now when it comes to sealing. What are you feeling these are, what we call Finishing oils: they're, not just emollient softening but they're. Also, occlusive they're really going to help to keep the moisture in your hair excellent. So what you can use is either an oil or a serum, so we use these differently. We use them when the hair already has moisture in it. That doesn't necessarily mean wet, but maybe it's freshly styled and just dried and really soft and moisturized, because they these will help to create that protective barrier, adding shine and lubricating your strands to prevent friction and frizzen. Some examples of these are jojoba oil, Jamaican black, castor oil, which again is not my favorite almond oil, silicones and one of the best mineral oil. Now some of these are very thick and applying a thick film over the hair is not really favorable, you're, actually better off using small amounts and reapplying as needed, they're more of a cosmetic oil rather than a treatment oil. If you want to put it this way, you can consider penetrating oils as active ingredients and non-penetrating oils honey bone that hit just right, because there was no reason for that to hurt me that bad and non-penetrating oils for more of that cosmetic finish that shine, while Also, giving your hair protection I'm again speaking to my high porosity curlies, you may be a bleached babe, as I once was, and so using these oils is going to help to keep your hair smooth, lock out humidity, that your porous hair is gon na want to Absorb and result in frizz and it's going to help prevent that friction in between your strands from your hands from brushing styling. These oils are protecting, so I know they have been demonized for a long time. I see less and less products with silicones and mineral oils. In them day by day, but they are truly the goats for styling and sealing, and that's for my high porosity, babes four healthier hair, low porosity, hair you're, probably fine with just using your stylers low porosity hair, won't need to apply sealing oils and normal porosity hair. You won't need to use them as often, but when you have colored hair damaged hair treated, hair you're going to want more oils. It'S almost like the more you do to your hair, the more you have to treat it, and that also goes with washing the more you wash your hair with water, the more damage there's going to be in the long run, so the bottom line is we use Oils to protect our hair and prevent it from further damage. This is proven. This is science, and this is approved by men. No and many game is man. Now, when it comes to scalp oils, which is a whole separate, Beast. We'Re gon na have to cover that. In another video, let me know when you want to see it if you have any specific questions about scalp oils and we'll be sure to cover that. I hope I answered all of your questions when it comes to hair oils and speaking of questions. It'S time for our end of video question of the day, this was a comment left on last week's video by Fairy Godmother. If you want your question answered in next week's video, make sure you drop one below they are wondering what are my thoughts on drugstore products similar to the model of today's video, it's not about the product. It'S how you use it. You can get just as good, if not better, results using drugstore products than high-end Salon brand, depending on how you're using them, because, let me tell you they are full of the same chemicals as the other ones. Essentially, the same drugstore products are not filled with a bunch of bad stuff. That'S going to ruin your hair, but on that note I haven't done a drugstore curly hair review in a long time, and I think we are due for one that is cruelty free on this channel. So if you want to see that in next week's video make sure you give this one a thumbs up subscribe - and I thank you so much for watching until next time - I'm out am I sweating peace. Am I perspiring? I haven't even gotten started. So, let's hope not, but after we address the curl Traverse seat, contrary oh [, __, ], it's dark outside. Did you guys see that happening? Did you guys watched? Did you guys just watch that happen over time? It'S all right! That'S what happens. My name is Jeff. My name is Mel. I think this talk is kind of deceiving. No, it's it's! It'S all out there wall out. There swallow, I don't know. Segway transition interlude inter mood, I'm a mood. This look has absolutely saved my day. The moment I put makeup on today. I said it's gon na be a slay. I got ta share the lip combo with you. We did the rare Beauty Pine words matte lip liner in worthy. It worked. It worked. The tarte maracuja juicy lipstick in the shade Rose. This is the lipstick, great combo. I'M gon na go eat dinner now um, they have started without me. Goodbye love you so much

Lily Bee : The issue with the heavy oils and butters is that a lot of people were overdoing it and using too much while also not shampooing weekly

EfikZara: Lol thank you. Omg, tired of this rhetoric that’s never backed up by actual science. It’s out of control. Improper use of oils has always been the issue with people who are now demonizing them… but I’ve been using oils properly for years and my hair and scalp are thriving.

Stefani Ward: Yes a scalp oil video soon would be great! I have a question for that of us that suffer from sebhorreic dermatitis. Washing our scalps often is the best practice, but that’s so hard on the hair. Would love to hear your thoughts on whether it would be best to wash frequently with our treatment shampoos, but use coconut oil on the hair first to protect it, or wash less frequently, but use some scalp oils that can help with the yeast. I’ve been reading a lot about borage oil and I’m curious to try it specifically.

pj-bunster: I appreciate Mel's commitment to making everything rhyme

Bekah Robertson: I also wish there was a way we could share our before and after pics with you. Since I started following you almost 4 years ago my hair has looked better and better! Thanks SEESTERS

Elari: Hey Mel! Since you mentioned UV damage, I've had a question for a while that I'm absolutely desperate to have answered: I walk in the sun a full hour every day (even in winter - sunny San Diego) to get to and back from work. I have 3b medium-to-coarse, medium-to-dense hair that is very, very dry. The hair at the top of my hair is obviously fried from the sun, it's 100% frizzy 100% of the time and sticks out of my otherwise round curly shape no matter how I try to tame it. I ended up cutting half of its length (only the hair on top), which made it much better. But I'm still walking in the sun, and my hair is too short to tie up in a protective style. I've been trying out the Sun Bum Revitalizing 3 in 1 leave-in recently, which claims to offer UV protection. I'm not sure it will help in the long run. Any other tips? I hope this gets a reply!!

Billie Tanney: Absolutely love your videos! You've helped me to accept I have curls, and how to deal with the craziness on top of my head without having to keep it up... Which I did for the better part of my life... So thank you and your seester for helping all of us unruly curly haired people handle them!!

Anna Miller: After moving into the dry climate of northern Ohio winters after living most of my life in humid Tennessee, I've noticed my hair has lost so much volume and definition. I'm looking forward to learning more from your videos in order to encourage more life back into my hair! Thank you for the content.

Ashley Edhouse: This was very useful! I have high porosity hair and many times in curly and wavy groups I'm being told I shouldn't use oils by so many people. But my hair needs certain oils from all the damage! Next time I'll just share this video. Also I definitely want a video on scalp oils - as someone who has a dry scalp with psoriasis I think it'll really benefit me.

Leslie Witherspoon: I'm not quite sure when the myth that oils are moisturizing came into being but somehow it took off and I think that's what confused everybody. I've only known oils to be penetrative or sealing. Then one day a couple years ago I was seeing all the girls getting upset and telling everybody not to put oil in their hair anymore. I also agree with the idea that people were not cleaning their hair enough and that's what was causing the problem. There are people to this day that shampoo their hair once every month whether they have extensions, a weave, whatever. So they're steady putting all these heavy oils and butters in on their hair and literally never cleaning it off. Then, when they finally do wash their hair, not only are they shedding a bunch of hair but it's dry and fragile and breaking off. And they never seem to connect the fact that they haven't moisturize their hair in literally a month. I also think that people don't pay attention to the different sections of their hair and take care of how they treat it. The roots are the strongest they're brand-new, the mid is slightly weaker, and your ends are the most frail and need the most care. My mom taught me this over thirty years ago and I followed it ever since. Never had any issues with my hair. It's not the oils and butters y'all, it's your strategies and your methods that are off.

Jd Ck: Im 60+ and have tried every oil in existence over the years. The only ones that really made a visible difference to me is Nigella (aka Black seed) oil and Wheat germ oil. I mix mine with conditioner and add it to my homemade Gel. It works brilliantly for my thin European curly hair

kwest51: I don't even listen to other "hair' influencers anymore. I watch your channel and do what works for me based on your tips and tricks. Thank you for helping us curlies figure it out!

Sophia Aloeristok: Mell coming through with the facts and the science, why we love you❤

Jennifer Weekley: I just wanted to thank Mel for keeping things scientific, it's nice to have a channel that I can go to that just cuts straight through all the chatter.

Mattar: Would love to know the scientific details and controversies on keeping oil on the scalp for a few hours vs overnight!

Zarabeth George: I'd better watch this! I have a head full of coconut oil waiting to be shampooed . Love you Mell & Amanda

fairy godmother: Mell serving us good looks, luscious curls and a sense of humor as usual thank you for answering my question!

dy: i never was able to get definition in my hair until i stopped using the oils and leave ins like these licensed stylists of 20+ years suggested. and it also helped me save a lot of money to just shampoo and condition and use one styling product weekly so i recommend everyone try it they also helped me to understand that there are a lot of other misconceptions in the curly hair community such as the fact that your hair has an inherent "porosity" rather than it being an attribute that can change depending in the environment or health/level of damage of the hair (can also be affected by oil build up). truly, if hair is dry, this can only be fixed by water scientifically, since that is the only thing that can actually provide hydration. oils can only lubricate and give a feeling of "moisture" but in the long run just prevent the water from doing its job of hydrating the hair ‍♀️ and they are not making your hair grow either i fear it grows no matter what!

Meh: Can we please do a video on pixie curly hair or curly bobs and the struggle on styling and the daily styling with short hair????? Annnnnnnnd, there has been a huge difference with me using oils. My hair actually lasts a day or two longer and no where near as hard to derange. Learning how to use correctly and when to use them has really been a game changer. I hate that phrase but it's the only thing I can think to say at the moment.

Angela Yalizis: Mell, a big thank you! I am binge watching all your posts. Every styling technique you have provided works. I just saw your clip on CGM. I went straight to the suppliers and Olaplexed the crap out of my hair! Literally 4 years of build up gone and I feel I can finally breath again. Thanks for saving my hair! I will be visiting you from Australia for a hair cut one day ✂️

kim hill: I followed your suggestion about coconut oil for the scalp as a pre-treatment to washing and the result has been lovely: shinier hair, more bounce. My hair is not perfect. It's got a lot of irregular curls, but it's all slowly getting better. I have always (unknowingly) had high porosity hair and had given up on it, but learning through trial and error has changed everything.

ㄹㅅㄹ: Thank you!! This silly no butters no oils thing has been getting on my last nerves cause it just doesn't make sense. Especially considering the fact that water in the hair strand is not a good thing UNLESS you have dehydrated hair (which I think most type 4s have tbh), but even then too much water is still bad. Also their obsession with it being raw vs in a formula is so weird. Whether you're using a hair serum filled with oils and some other products, or a raw oil/butter, you're still going to have a bad time, if you're not washing the oils out properly and allowing them to build up and not using them properly.

Rella Haire: I feel like a chart is almost needed. So… is argan oil penetrating or sealing? And which of the penetrating oils would be best for finer hair that is easily weighed down? You mentioned that some are thicker than others, but not which ones. Thank you so much!

Johanna Torres: I just trust you Mel, it shows that you do your research and not just repeat what others are saying. Since I started following your advice my hair has never looked better

Jared Marino: Girl... come through with this gorgeous set! You KNOW she's lit PERFECTLY. Real talk through, love how you are still fair to other stylists when offering your opposing advice. Keeping it classy

Ruth Kuder: Hey Mel, have you ever tried Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic Curl Stimulator gel? I love it. (The name is fun too ) Would like to find a similar gel in case I can't get a hold of this brand. Any suggestions? Thanks for all you do!

Jacy Henk: Question: how can low porosity hair turn to high porosity hair after just one color treatment, or can it? My strand test was low porosity and my hair that was sent in was color treated. Thank you for all your great , and IMO, factual information. I like the science, Mell.

Néné: Omg THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. there is such pseudoscience out there that is what is ruining people's hair. I know that since I gave been listening to you, my hair had gotten wayyyyyyy healthier. Cleanse your hair properly and using oils has helped My hair's health SO MUCH.

Ashley Edwards: The front half of my hair around my face curl beautifully. The hair on the back part of my head is limp and wavy and won’t clump. What could be causing this? Also - is it harmful to use flexi rods on a few of these pieces to help them blend in with the rest of my hair better?

Marie: I really appreciate what Mel does for the curly hair community and her explanation how and which oils to use are great! This being said, I am shocked how she advises to use mineral oil. A simple search will deliver hundreds of articles concerning soil polution, mineral oil spills that affect marine organisms etc. Forget about how it makes your hair look shiny and smooth, there are enough alternatives. If you have just one tiny bit of responsibility towards the environment, then try to avoid using mineral oils whenever possible. Same with her attitude towards silicones. Yes, silicones are not quite as bad as plastic and no, they are not toxic in hair products and you can get rid of their buildup if you clarify. But they are not water soluble, they will stay in the waters which means that they are a waste problem. I do not understand how we can all call for cruelty-free products but on the other hand promote these ingredients and completely ignore their effects on the environment and marine life smh

Aliya B: If you are dandruff prone or have a naturally oily scalp like I do (I only wash my hair once a week, but when I do I use an anti-dandruff shampoo for my scalp and a good moisturizing conditioner for my hair), do you still benefit from scalp oils? If so, which scalp oils? I have tight curls/coils and very dense hair that's a mix of thin and coarse hair strands.

Erin B.: I really love apricot kernel oil as a treatment before I shampoo or do a protein treatment. My face loves it too. Helps keep the balance.

Manoji Pereira: Great video! @sciencemeetscosmetics also mentioned that the whole idea of "hydrating" the hair is a concept borrowed from skin care, that can't be applied to hair because healthy hair repels water

Harley Myers: Hairitage. It has been my life saver. Over half my hair products are from them. Would love for you to do an updated review on them since they have come out with such a huge range. Edit: spelling

Nicole Eymard: what are the right ingredients (and I guess brands lol) for the clarifying shampoo that we should be using every other week?

Ciara N.: I'm so glad she made this video. Literally yesterday I was having a mental breakdown, searching YouTube to give me a solid take on what to do.

Akhila Boyina: It makes sense that in India we’ve used coconut oil as it’s super humid in many of the areas of india and preventing too much moisture and reducing friction during washing makes sense

jessica: I also remember Google saying textured hair is thicker and more oiled naturally, but it is more prone to losing oil at the same time, so you have to put oil back in. Oils work for me.

Belinda Chappell: Hey Mell, does fractionated coconut oil still benefit the hair as a pre-poo like regular coconut oil?

Accurate3D: Hey Mell, I am very new to having a hair routine and my hair is extremely curly. I have a very beginner question, because I don't know what shampoo I need to be using. I use a gel that has Peg-8 dimethicone and in one of your old videos you said that the only way to prevent this build up is to use a shampoo with sulfates, but on the other hand I really dislike how sometimes shampoo can make my hair extremely thin. Is there a shampoo you recommend that can get rid of the Peg 8, properly wash but maybe not thin the hair too much? Any help would be incredibly useful, and I am in Canada if that matters for product availability. Thank you for enlightening me with these videos!

Brianna Marie: hi mell, i’ve followed you for a few years now and you’ve taught me how to maintain healthy and lively curls. i’m asking if you have any tips for keeping my hair safe while i work. i work in the food industry with requirements to always wear a hat or updo. my hair is so long a hat isn’t enough so i resort to clips and braids all the time. my curls are healthy but i’m scared if i stay like this for another year or two they’ll start to lose their kink.

Heartwaves: Been trying to figure out this for my thick & wavy 2b, low porosity hair, that may be over hydrated. One wavy girl said that to get a healthy balance of protein and moisture in hair, and save on all the scientific formula of figuring out how much protein/moisture is in each product, and how much to use to create the right concoction, she uses a pre-poo treatment of oil the night before she washes hair. She said oils help balance protein & moisture in the hair to create healthy balanced hair. True? Are you recommending coconut oil over castor oil for my type of hair? And if I can ask... why I don't I ever see any curly/wavy girl using heat protectant in hair before diffussing... is it not necessary?

charyd76: Hi Mel & Amanda! I discovered your channel about a month ago and I can’t stop watching! My daughter and I have learned so much from you, so thank you so much! My questions: -Is carrot oil good for your hair?; -I use it with my styling products to reduce breakage, should I use it as a finish?; or -not use it at all? ‍♀️ Again, thank you for all your videos

Sapphire Blue: Thank you! I see so many different opinions, but I trust you so I'm sticking with my coconut oil and finishing oil now

Nura Martinez: Hi Mel! First I want to say that you studying tricology adds even more value to your videos and I appreciate that a lot! Second, I started washing my hair more often ( before i did once a week, now twice) and I’ve notice my scalp is actually itching when before it didn’t. I think it should be that my scalp is dry ( currently surviving canadian winter) but I have no idea what to do about it. How do you hydrate the scalp? I am using an everyday shampoo and conditioner with no sulfates neither silicones ( I do love sulfates and silicones) but maybe these are too harsh for me to use often? I was also wondering could I add something to my shampoo and conditioner so that I can still use them? Sorry for the long message haha but thank you for all the help and sense of humor!

TheTemperamentalEcnomist1: Thank you Mel! Please educate me on scalp oils as well! Incredibly well timed, I was looking for info on hail and scalp oils

Carol Martin: I’m 53 and still can’t stop running my fingers thru my curls! Maybe someday Thanks Mel. I’d love to hear your drugstore reviews. I’ve tried everything including the fancy but so often return to Garnier Fructis ‍♀️

Esther T. Jones: I can't use oils on my hair, but serums seem to work! I followed the blowout professors tips on use, and everything's going well so far

A Reader Is Borne: A scalp oil video would be wonderful! As I’ve been on my curly journey I have come to realize just how dry my scalp is. Not a lot of flaking, but itching certainly. I also had a lot of hair loss due to some stress over medical issues with my youngest son. I am finally starting to get new hair back (which can be a styling nightmare ), but I am overwhelmed by all the scalp oil choices. I am also. It sure when it the best time to apply them. I feel like when I rub them in I am messing up my style so I try to only do them at night, but not sure if I am just applying too much or my technique is off. Help!

Lise Verger: Thanks Mell for this : mineral oil like Morocannoil has just saved my routine throughout the week ❤️❤️❤️

Erika C.: Thank you, the misinformation with curly hair is crazy. They all just make it extremely difficult to figure out a very simple process for your unique hair needs. My philosophy is not to think that products “Save” or “kill” my hair, rather my routine is most important for healthy hair

Ashley Crosby: I’m a waitress, and my curls smell like a restaurants. How can I refresh and make my hair smell better without having to wash after every shift? And 10/10 need a hair oil video. Yes please.

Helen L: This was a really helpful educational video, Mel. Thanks so much for all that you do for us curlies!

Arlene Guizado: Could you do a styling tutorial for people with short curly hair? Sadly there are too few of these videos. It’s difficult for brush styling, gauging product amount, etc…. Thanks, and you and your family and channel are the most amazing..

Angela G: This video came at a great time. I was just thinking about using an oil on my hair so, Thanks Mel for all the great info. I would love too see a video about drug store products.

BBL _M: I was also confused by the controversy about putting oils in your hair. I had bleached, dry, heat damaged hair and when I use argan oil after I wash it it looks sooo healthy , my waves look defined. When I told my hair stylist she was appalled. She said oils are drying my hair , that’s why my hair is always dry. But it was actually making my hair grow and I helped with my split ends. So I was so confused

♍️ 👑 Queen: You’re the best Mel would love a scalp oil video! PLEASE cover rosemary oil & do you have any oils you would recommend using daily/ multiple times a week? MUCH LOVE

Kaelyn Stayrook: i’ve been WAITING for this one!! does this apply to ingredients in leave in products as well or just using the oil straight up?

Gabrielle Price: My grandma gave me some argon oil a few years ago. I’ve been using after I style my hair once my hair is dry to kind of seal everything and add shine. This video makes me wonder if I’ve been using it right though

Gabi.: Great video as usual! I'll always swear by coconut oil because back when my hair was bleached into oblivion and was super dry and damaged, applying coconut oil for a few hours before each wash made a HUGE difference, it pretty much saved my hair (all other products I was using were the same, I should add, so the oil was the only difference). Nowadays my hair is healthy (no longer bleached), so I don't really see much of a difference using it, but for damaged hair it definitely helps, so whenever people try to say it does nothing without evidence it always makes me pretty skeptical about the rest of what they're saying (like these TikTokers).

Jenna: Hi Mel! I have a question! I keep seeing videos about “thickening your hair with oils/ serums”. Is this truly possible? I have fine curls and tend to lose a clump of it every shower so a magic thickening solution sounds too good to be true! ‍♀️

K E: Omg. Thank you for being so informative! When I first got into CGM, I was watching a video about scalp health. They got an up-close view of different people's scalps, of different hair types and that washed their hair different amounts. The lady doing the...study? Video? Asked one of the women, "What about oils? How often do you condition your scalp?" The woman asked, "What does that even mean?" And the lady doing the video said, "Exactly." And then never answered the question!

Sarah Mohammad: When I first got into curly hair routines, I've been completely convinced that mineral oils were horrible for me, also silicones. At first, I used a leave in with silicone until my friend told me it's bad for me and I threw it out. Ever since then, I've been avoiding silicones and mineral oils while my hair became super dry and way too frizzy. I've always wondered why, maybe I should return to incorporating silicone in my stylers and some mineral oil to seal curls after diffusing! I'm a high porosity curly due to extreme heat damage Love your videos! Keep it up !

Christina: Mell, how often do you recommend using the K18 treatment? I did the initial 4 times & it was amazing. I don’t want to waste the product…so expensive. Not sure when to do it again. Maybe after coloring? Thank you!

Eiffel1331: Great video as usual. Love to hear you discuss the science :) And yes! I'd love to see you review cruelty-free drugstore products and give recommendations for different textures in next week's video. I'd also like to see a scalp oil video, but after the drugstore video. I really need help with a CF drugstore routine, especially fragrance-free or at least essential oil-free products because my skin is easily irritated by fragrances and essential oils. I have dandruff, maybe even seborrheic dermatitis? Thank you both for putting all the work into such great videos! They're so helpful!

danielle davis: Omg thank god you made a video on this. I was so confused and it seemed like most of these stylists only promote one line “innersense”.

James F: Hi Mell, do you think brush styling causes damage? I tend to style with a wide tooth comb as I’ve seen online about the tension of brushes causing damage. What do you think? Thanks ☺️

Анфиса Литвиненко: I found out that for my scalp the best way to keep it clean and itch free is exfoliating with glycolic acid Once a week I do with glycolic acid toner (The ordinary) leave it for 2-3 h (plus pre shampoo oil on ends) and the wash! My hair finally feels happy What is your opinion about usual (face toners with AHA BHA) for scalp?

Juliana Sylvester: Great video Mel, as a follow up I'd like to know what the difference is between oils and hair serums. Is a serum an oil? Is an oil a serum? I know hair serums always seal the hair shaft so are used after styling but for example, Moroccan oil seems to be very popular right now! As does Mielle Rosemary and Mint hair growth oil (applied to the scalp) but again I'd like to know the science and ingredients behind these as the educational element of your videos always helps me to understand what I'm actually buying and paying for!

Corrine Lewis: Mel we need the scalp scoop: conditions (like states of the scalp on health or how much build up), natural scalp oils, detoxing

Michelle B: My hair looks terrible with any sort of finishing oil. My curls immediately separate and turn to frizz and fluff.

Sincerely, Jii: and that is why you are the best curly hair girlie

Sharrell Kline: Thank you so much! I needed this exact information. I think coconut oil prewash could be a game changer for my colored locks.

Marina Huq: Learn to style my 60 year old curly hair after watching your videos. Great job ❤

Druid: Yes drugstore products soon please Mel your videos are so educational thanks for all the work and research you do!

Rina: I have noticed that these hairstyles who don’t recommend using oils keep pushing innersense products, not only that when people ask them to recommend something more affordable they ignore them

Christina Souza: I’m a wavy, but still find so much in your videos that I can use. I have fine hair (blonde…or at least I was until I hit 50) but I have a LOT of hair. High porosity, dry, frizzy hair. Quite a bit of grey now. I wash once a week and add oil daily. My hair seems to get dryer each day and I have no idea why. Seem to be allergic to coconut oil (scalp gets a rash). What am I doing wrong?

E: Guess it depends on how dry your hair is what oil you use washing it first not doing it to often I know that when I have it done professionally a trim and a wash hot oil conditioning treatment under low heat -It totally changes my hair ..I look like a new woman-Which Is rare mine needs 5 weekly trims or 8 weekly -Even when I am growing it longer I take 100% the advice of my hairdresser if you have a good one do not change they will not advise anything that is not needed mine often will say wait two weeks it doesn't need anything doing to it yet

Janet V Johnson: Hi, Mel! Can you please discuss scalp oils for people who have oily scalp (like me?) Thanks!

M A: Absolutely love you. You are so extraverted. Wish I was like this! Here is my question for the scalp oil video: it is recommended to not leave the rosemary essential oil (which I mix with another carrier oil) on scalp more than 3 hours as it could otherwise clog your hair follicles with dust particles and lead to hair loss. Personally I can't be bothered. I oil my hair and my scalp the night before I shampoo and I sleep with it. Is this really bad?

Kacey M: I loved this video! I look forward to the one about scalp care. But if I could give one piece of constructive criticism, could you list the studies that you reference in the description or on screen?

Julie Haughton: Does gray hair need more hair oil? And also, I’ve heard many influencers say you should change up your hair products, but what if you have found a product line that really “hits it out of the park” every time?

Chelsey Burt: I’ve seen a lot of products with Moroccan oil sitting on the shelves of various salons. Does this oil offer any benefit? Or is it just hype?

Angelique Schalk-Ruff: I literally just had ~theeee~ best wash day because I did a hot oil treatment before shampooing and I’m still rocking day 7 hair. * chef’s kiss *

Hala El-Murr: Mel, I need your help. So my hair is thick. My hair is generally frizz free for two days after styling. It feels soft and bouncy, but after day two my hair feels coarse and hard and a bit dry. What gives? How can I prolong the softness and sleekness? Thank you

Hodo: I've been seeing so much oil slander on my fyp!! Thank you for making this video ❤

Disney Toys R 4 Fun: Id rather just use hair products formulated with penetrating and occlusive ingredients. Oils make working with my gels and foams a nightmare

Laura B: Thanks for the video Mell and Amanda. Looking forward to your drug store( I prefer affordable) review. My question is regarding brush styling before or after Gel/other hold product? When do you recommend and what are the pros & cons of each.

D G: my hair is super porous, and oil is a must. I like just a teeny amount right after conditioning instead of a leave in conditioner. then a little gel and im good. I use hemp seed. A little goes a long way

C Calandra: Good one thank you! Im new to oiling & i think i got the right ones.. Ive combined: jojoba/rosemary/castor/olive. I cant do castor alone but the others make it more manageable. I was hoping to get the benefits letting them sit on my hair a cpl hours and washing it out. I dont go crazy. I dont saturate. I put it on day 3 hair as I dont wash everyday. Currently I cant help have it tied up for work but love releasing it & its shiny, mostly straight, no frizz! Ill will try it on my almost dry fresh hair, see how the curls go!

Jody and Amanda: I love you forever. ps - I think I should get commission from all the curlies I send to your channel

Kendall: Hey Mell! I live in a very humid area. My hair tends to get wet, soak up the water, lose hold, and become limp. What should I do?

April Plourde: Hey Mel! Can you please do a video on scalp care? I've been suffering from dry, itchy, almost burning scalp on day 2/3 of my wash day. I never had issues until I stopped using sulphates and started wearing my hair curly. Should I reintroduce sulphates into my routine? Thank you!

M scarcepearl: i liked the video coconut oil is dope ! For prepoo! If u read this comment and your curls are smaller than hers and more frizzy or puffy or with a higher porosity like mine, use reduced coconut cream or coconut butter instead of the clear oil that she showed in the video. Because it is heavier than the oil it is more nourishing for our curly hair type + for sealing at the end on dry hair, castor oil is

Zooey Dayz: Thank you so much for this video, it was so helpful!! I was wondering if there are any specific oil brand you'd recommend for SOTC? I have fine hair and currently use olaplex but I'm not sure another type of oil might be better. Also I was hoping you could do a review soon on Rizos Curls Products!! Like their new scalp scrubs and hair masks!!♥️

Jackie Williamson: First: good to know that since I wash frequently (oily scalp), I might benefit from a pre-poo oil. Second: I usually wash in the morning, so it seems like my best option would be to pre-poo with oil overnight. What’s the best way to do this without ending up with a greasy pillowcase/bonnet?

Ally: What are best oils to treat the scalp with for hair growth? Are oils useful when you have a dry itchy scalp?

Lami Akindele: The irony of these stylists claiming that the oils are bad for hair when they are only concerned with how popping the curls look at the end of their service because they're only STYLISTS

Reap&Sew: Your my absolute fave Mel! Don’t change a thing ❤

Teri: Question: Is clarifying shampoo enough to remove minerals from the water? Or is using an apple cider vinegar rinse going to help more with that? Love your videos! You're a gem
