How To Groom A Dog With Curly Or Wavy Hair - Grooming Demonstration

Learn how to #groomacurlyhaireddog the expert way - in the video demonstration from European grooming champion Jitka Krizova. Keeping a dog with a curly or wavy coat in top condition does require some effort.

But Jitka's shows how to apply her prize-winning grooming tips on miniature poodle, Barney. The techniques used for #goomingapoodle also apply to dogs with similar coats such as Bichon Frise, Bedlington Terriers, Irish Water Spaniels and Kerry Blue Terriers.

Curly and wavy coat types require a lot of work when it comes to grooming.

Other breeds with coats like Barney’s include Bichon Frise, Bedlington Terrier, Irish Water Spaniel and Kerry Blue Terrier. So the grooming techniques are similar.

Brushing always should be firm and gentle, because we don’t want to cause dogs discomfort and skin irritation. Grooming is a vital part of looking after your dog.

Miniature Poodle Barney’s curly hair tangles easily and has a tendency to become dry. Using a leave in conditioner before brushing will make the job much easier.

You have to make sure when you brush the coat you go right down to the skin and remove all the dead hair and mat.

For this type of coat a soft slicker brush is best. Gently work from the ends out first, making sure there are no mats or small tangles.

Slicker brushes are available at any pet shops, and it’s very easy to brush the coat.

The technique I’m using we call line brushing. With your left hand you hold up all the hair and gentle part and slide with your slicker brush. This way you make sure you brush the coat right down to the skin.

Curly and wavy haired dogs require 15 minutes of daily brushing to keep their coats in good condition.

We have to start when the puppy’s really small, about eight-nine weeks old when it arrives in your home. They get used to it easily and it makes a nice bond between you and your dog.

This is Barney one-year-old miniature poodle, typical example of a curly-haired dog he's about to have a grooming makeover in the hands of a real expert. I'M using. We call line brushing with your left hand, you hold up all the hair and gently cut and slide with your slicker brush. This way, you make sure you brush the coat right down to the skin. Curly and wavy hair dogs require 15 minutes of daily brushing to keep their coats in good condition. We have to start when the puppies really small about eight nine weeks old when it arrives to new home, they get used to it easily and it makes nice bond between you and your dog one of the best things about this type of coat. Is it doesn't shed, so a poodle makes an ideal pet for anyone, who's hosts pride or suffers from allergies. After I finish brushing we have to comb the hair. This way, we'll make sure there are no any knots left if the comb stops. It means there is a knot and we have to use brush again if we try to pull the knot with a comb. It'S quite uncomfortable and painful for the dog pay special attention to your dog's ears, legs back end and tail, because these are the areas that tangle easily. When you're happy you've removed all the tangles, you can use a hairdryer to fluff the dog's hair, we're going to use a slicker brush for fog dry and we using the same line brushing why, with it earlier when we dry in a dog, we have to be Aware of the temperature of the air, because if the air is too hot, it can cause skin irritation and skin burn next get que, uses the Clippers to trim Barney's, face feet and back end. This is tricky. It'S best left to a professional groomer. We have to be careful with webbing between dog's toes and clip carefully. Around shaped face is easier to keep clean, especially in area around eyes and ears, and dog's mouth next. Uk is going to trim Barney's legs head and tail with scissors, which they'll be, can be quite creative in poodles. The tail can be shaved with pom-pom. It can be completely shaved or just shaped with longer head. I will take probably 3/4 of an inch to match it with his legs and top knot to make the look balanced. The top knots is the hair on Barney's head. Yet he is going to create a classic pom-pom. She carefully measures the width and height to get the shape. The height of the top knot is roughly the same distance as from the outside corners of Barney's eyes. Barney'S haircut has taken yet cut two hours, but it's a low-maintenance style for the owner. The hair on Barney's legs and body has been trimmed to about an inch long, which makes it easy to look after for summer. We can go a little bit shorter. Keep the dock cooler for winter. We can leave the jacket a little bit longer Barney's only one year old, and I think he was really good today and yeah, I'm very proud of him. I think we can see the difference before and after in between grooming sessions. You should brush your dog regularly trimmers nails every four to six weeks and check his ears for infection. Weekly years can be a particular challenge with wavy curly haired breeds further advice. Click on our film called ears.

Barb Jarvis: Hi I love how talented you are at grooming this breed . I have a ten pound bichon but I love her curls and not the puff ball look . Would I use the same techniques you showed to trim and will her hair/fur just go back to those lovely curls . Thanks Barb

Rasa McClure: Can you please advise what bristle brush to use on standard poodle with very thick and wired hair (not soft, she is parti colour). Nothing seems to go through , only scratching the surface.

Vilma Canas: Thank you for the video! Dogs are family

Lupita D.: I've never accustomed my dogs to brushing their fur or clipping their nails and they're 5 years old now and each time I attempt they move and struggle. I wish I knew this sooner and did it when they were puppies. Now I'm scared to take them to a groomer because I'm embarrassed. They're a poodle mix and their hair grows fast. They're nails are long. Mom cuts their fur with scissors but each time it's a struggle.

JVONROCK: This is getting to know and love the animal living with you. They need to trust everything you go.

una esperanza viva: amazing, congrats and God bless you.

Ana T: But this takes away the curls. What if you want to keep your dogs fur curly.

Colonel Gayfur: You know someone is professional when they take measures with their fingers lol

bett cuva: i have a bichon maltese mix with a puddle and his hair is realy curly and it has some nots in the back end ,thanks for the facts!

Brenda J: Wish my cockapoo would stop fighting against touching her feet and legs and top of head. I'm working on her with daily brushing and being brave to show she won't stop the process, and praising her a lot. After a great brushing she gets a bit of blue cheese which she loves.

Sun and Moon Eater: Can i use ordinary Wahl hair clipper ( not meant for animal use) to trim dog hair?

Cee Beanes: Dear Jackiee Garcia, get your self a high quality treat, and get comfortable, have a soft slicker brush, comb, and nail trimers, sit down with your dog each day and work a little at a time on feet, massage feet and treat! if dog pulls back and fights you, don't treat. say quit, or no. but don't get on dog. make it fun and pleasant. when he doesn't resist treat! then when he is doing well just tip nail with nail clippers and praise and treat! you don't have to finish every nail, do one nail a day or two until you get them done. Remember this is training for grooming, not the grooming. brushing: line brush with a slicker brush, get comfortable lay your dog on its side and pet and stroke it. praising its good behavior start any where you wish, but put one hand on the coat and brush the hair out from under your hand, this is called line brushing remember to praise and treat, ignore bad behavior, and do not treat. you can do this with everything even brushing teeth, I start with peanut butter! yum!! the goal is not to finish from start to finish, but to introduce...now you have your start watch LOTS of the professional grooming videos, from PRO Groomers! and try to do just the simple things, get the dog used to a table Click N treat for standing! or say YES! and treat! have then stand for brushing, ear checks, cleaning etc. before you know it they will be stress free and ready for a professional grooming!now that I have told you all of this, know this a good groomer can groom your dog! don't be embarrassed, better to have your dog groomed and be mat free, and flea free! and looking good because a dog knows when he looks good and is happier for it!your Groomer will train the dog as she grooms it! and each time they see her it will be easier for both! so go and see your groomer at least every 4 to 6 weeks! 8 weeks on the outside.Cee.

Bonnie Dee: Saying a poodle/cross doesn't shed is nonsense. It doesn't shed as much as other breeds, but it certainly does shed. This tends to be inwardly too, which is another reason for the daily brushing. (Source: Qualified groomer).

somethingis charming: Could you make my toy poodle's hair not sticky and curly

Alice Flores: Good job

Kara Myers: well thanks for teaching me I should just leave it to proffesionals
