Neither haircuts because the same welcome to today's video, I am gay - mean girl Mel. I am a professionally trained hairstylist that specializes in textured hair. I am frequently asked so the question: what haircut should I get? What air cut is best? Is it dry cuts better than a wets cuts? Is a wet cut or cutting your hair straight really bad for the curls? What should we do? Look there are so many different techniques. I won't be able to get to all of them today, but there are two major haircuts that are in questions specifically a dry curl by curl haircut and a dry flatiron straightened haircut. But since these are two of the most popular and there are pros and cons to each of them, I thought I'm not just gon na tell you I'll, show you what these both look like. So I'm doing something that many would consider quite crazy. I'M gon na be cutting half of my hair, a dry curl by curl haircuts and the other half I'm going to straighten my hair and cut it straighten, and I will show you guys what it looks like both straightened overall and both curly overall and what results Work best for your type of curl and your type of situation and every haircut is situational. It'S all gon na depend on what's happening here and what you want in here so stay tuned for the results and a ton of info that you may want to take notes on now, when you're getting your hair cut. There are three major things that you need to consider consider the following number one: what look am i going for right? What look are you going for now asking yourself this question is going to align with your hair goals, so what are you trying to achieve? Is it overall health is it length? Is it more volume? Is it shape? What are your styling preferences this? This right here is the most important thing to bring up, because this is going to determine which haircut is going to be right for you. How do you actually like to wear your hair? Are you a wash and go Queen? Do you like the versatility? Are you switching it up in different natural styles? I'M talking braid outs, twist outs, heatless curls, that type of thing, and are you actually smoothing out your hair? Often are you getting blowouts? Are you straightening? Your hair should be cut, how it is mostly worn and how you would prefer it to look. So your preference is how you're going to be wearing. It is the most important thing once you've considered the look that you're going for you need to consider. How much are you willing to loose and number three? How committed are you to maintaining this haircut different haircut? Styles and techniques will require different types of maintenance, so we need to be aware of the upkeep of this look, so we can continue to achieve our hair goals. So for me, I'm just looking to maintain my shape. It'S all kind of grown out, and I really like the haircut that I've had I just kind of want to maintain that so, let's get into when and why you would want a dry, curly cut or a straightened haircut without further ado, I'm going to go prepare My hair for my appointment, hello, I'm ready to now cut this right here - is how you want to arrive to your appointment anytime, you're, getting your curly hairs cut, especially if this is stylist that again, you guys don't know each other too well just yet. You want to go in with your err in its natural state. Now I did already go ahead in the process and prepared this side of my head, but I put the same products all throughout my hair. I used olaplex number 6, which is the leave-in reparative styling treatment, and then I used the number 7 oil Denman brushed and like err, drive and diffuse, this side smooth out this side using this Denman petal brush and I gave it a quick flat iron towards the Ends so that's where we are, you don't necessarily have to freshly wash it, but your hair should look like how it usually does on a daily basis. I'M gon na go ahead and start cutting I'll show you a little bit what I'm doing explain what's happening and then we're gon na really compare both sides. As you will see it here we go the row. The flow blue, whoa first things. First, I'm going to start on the bottom. You usually start on the bottom, with a curly dry cut, you're, building a shape you got to start from the ground up. You can really see the difference in my shrinkage with these two sides like this and on my straight side. You can really see where it just thins out and I can see the split ends so much worse, but of course, even in the curly side. Some of these curls towards the ends just get really thin and they'll get wonky and frizzy. So that's what I'm focusing on now, I'm just looking into a mirror over here because that's necessary. I am using my mid suit any shears. These are the puffins. These are very expensive scissors unless you're a professional doing it. This is not even an option and because I know you're gon na ask if the scissors do matter. Um. Yes, I know I mean it's more important to know how to use the scissors, which I have explained in even previous videos, like my bang coming video, but as long as they've got a sharp blade, you can even find some good ones on Amazon, I'll link. Some good ones below so, let's talk about some of the pros and the cons of each cut. A dry curly cut is extremely beneficial for people that have multiple different curl patterns throughout their hair. My bangs are my curliest part of my head and leaving these out. I'M trying to grow them out so to try to really minimally trim them. That'S where the trail bike colonel comes in you're, cutting each curl for how it naturally sits on your head. This makes a curly dry cut, probably the best option for someone that wears their hair, naturally curly, all the time which I do. I always wear my hair, naturally curly, but I do like to wear my hair in different types of styles, so that is something to consider. That is one of the benefits of cutting straight. I want roundness here and my fear, something I definitely do not want is ends that are too thin. So I want to keep enough bluntness and heaviness on the perimeter of my hair, while still getting some layering in now. I go for pretty classic layers that classic. I mean this is like a very traditional way when you see me elevating my hair off of my head. It'S always 90-degree, just like when i style my curls, because that gives me the most amount of volume and it allows me to really build that shape when it is curly and look. This is the shape right right and now I'm going to go over and do the same thing on my straight hair side, but it's just gon na be done on my street here. Oh, I also want to make know I'm cutting my hair down the middle because I have actually been really liking, my middle part, so I'm okay with this, I'm really going to try to balance out this haircut with this haircut. I took off about an inch of this hair, so I'm gon na take off about an inch on this side. Cutting the hair straight is very similar to cutting the hair if it was wet. I'Ve showed you guys how I cut my hair wet in my last haircut, video and I want to address a common misconception about what cutting there's an idea that, when your hair is wet, it stretches 50 % and you're stretching the hair even more so you're gon Na cut off too much and it's gon na jump up way more, but realistically, our hairs elasticity is not that crazy. When you're cutting the hair when it's wet you're, simply just adding some tension to make it straight, which is like what I've done here. So a wet cut is straight cut very similar. Just keep in mind that cutting your wet or straightened is not a bad thing. There are plenty of scenarios when you would actually want to get a cut on straightened or wet hair, and these are some of the benefits. So if you don't just wear your hair in washing those, but you also like to twist out some braid outs and heatless curls and straighten your hair, you will get more out of your straight cut now. A cut on this kind of hair is especially beneficial when you have a very consistent curl pattern throughout your hair, so especially once you've already transitioned or you do notice that your curl pattern is similar throughout getting a straight cut is perfectly okay, it feels balanced. It feels better, and I think it's looking amazing can't you tell here, you clearly can right away, but I'm sure a lot of you are wondering Mel. What does the straight side? Look like, let's see how the curls reshape up after this haircut, hello, I am back. I am curly and feeling better than ever. I got that fresh cut feeling this is curls actually, after my second wash way back to curly neck back to the whole half-and-half situation and also day two. So this is really what my hair is going to look like. So, let's take a look at both sides of the haircut before it cut anything. I'D never find it at all. This was our straight inside, and this was the curly cut side. You actually see and notice how the hair on the side that was cut straight is almost a more consistent and even shape a stronger shape. If you will then on the dry curl by curl side, cutting curl by curl can give it a little bit more of a lived-in look right off of the bat. This means that longevity-wise, so your hair cuts to come a haircut done on wet straight hair, will yield longer-lasting results and tends to grow out better. Now. Why is that? When we are cutting crew by curl and cutting the hair in the shape, naturally is number one? Your curls are probably never going to curl that exact way again, so it will appear a little bit differently and also when you're cutting the curl as it is already spiraled and textured, the eggs will look a little bit more textured, so we're talking eggs that look A little bit wispier a little bit softer a softer, more lived-in shape, but in the long run, things can really get out of control. It'Ll start to look a little bit stringy and really lose its shape. A lot faster - and this is because, when the hair is clean, cut with a traditional and classic haircut, perpendicular 90 degrees from the Strand. It will create more bluntness on the ends and it can make the curl look fuller on the bottom, and it also ensures that no hair was left behind and you can really notice the textured ends when you straighten your hair. So take a look at my now. Blow-Dried, smooth hair, you can see the differences in the haircut and even the health of the ends, because my aunt's have gone so bad. Putting a strong shape with a straight cut ensured that all of the split ends were taken care of on the curly cut side. Obviously, this cut is going to look very textured on the end with strings because it was cut curl by curl and if you never straighten your hair, maybe you won't care about that, but if you do, that is something to consider, but there's also nothing wrong with That, because there is not just one way, to cut curly hair and there's not only one technique that you can use it's about using multiple techniques to get the results that you want and listen we're not done here now is when the magic happens. It'S time for the finishing touch, so I've stabbed my hair as I prefer to wear it. This is how it's going to look most of the time, and this is how I'm going to refine the haircut and it's, how you add those personal touches if you're ever leaving the salon wearing your hair, not styled. Naturally, you know if you went for that blowout or any other style besides your natural curls or besides how you're going to be wearing it most of the time there may be some discrepancies in the haircut, and this can often lead to disappointment. So it's time to add the personal touches which personally I have always done on my own hair. Even when I was getting my hair cut by somebody else, I know my hair better than anybody. You know your hair better than anybody, and sometimes you just got ta. Take matters into your own hands and add those details yourself, especially with curly hair. We have that freedom, it's not that serious and it's really important to do that on hair. That you know is styled how you like it personally now that I've just done a pretty serious, cut and cleaned everything up in between my next haircut. I will be doing some minor dustings with dry cutting, but when I need a good serious haircut, I do go for a wet haircut or a haircut on straighten hair for that really nice clean, strong shape. So, what's the bottom line, there is no right or wrong way or just one way to cut curly hair. Okay, there is a wrong way. You definitely never want to let anyone texturize your hair, never go crazy slide. Cutting because I've had my hair splits like cut dry, I'm gon na talk about it, just don't let them use thinning shears on you or fit out your hair at all or texturize it and supply cut and do crazy things like that. Don'T lots of ever do that? Okay, that's the wrong way, but anyways. What will save that um? The best hair cuts come from music, multiple techniques, and hopefully this video will remind you to think about how you prefer to wear your hair and think about what its meaning when it comes to deciding your next haircut. Remember. I do have a video on how I cut my hair straight from the last time, so check that out, if you haven't already - and on that note, I cannot stop staring at the east dark roots. I think that's the next thing that needs to be taken care of. So let me know if you want a video on how I'm going to touch up my roots. Hodge area bring up the blondes with bleach and color and no damage and of course, if you have any other comments or questions just leave them in the comment section below I'll try to answer you guys as much as I can and if not, then you never Know it just might be the next video. So if you like this video, please give it a thumbs up share with your curly friends and maybe even your hairstylist, and make sure that you're not just subscribed, but you also have the post notifications on. I cannot wait until then. Thank you so much for tuning in and all mad notes. This has been your main girl melt. Oh peace. My ends are just like kind of snapping off I never oh the split just split. I can't even do the splits, but my hair can do the splits. Oh, my god, it's terrible elasticity where cuticle, where throw the whole head away. My hair is gon na, be everywhere Hamptons, it's crazy. What a split end looks like that's my whole medulla right there. This is really bad. This is really bad. What are we what what has to happen? What should I do snapping right off? Stressful, it's stressful? It'S! It'S stressful, bye, goodbye love, these winds, okay, I'll get! This party started whoa. Okay, this [ __ ] is out of control. Okay, why? Even look okay but hello? Oh back and better, oh, my god, okay, so Uncle five months without a haircut, I really don't recommend, especially if your hair is fine and color-treated. Like me,

Cassandra Bankson: *After quarantine I DEFO need a ahircut. I appreciate that you're a prof as well as texture-conscious! Brad mondo needs to react to you, and I need to get less afraid of these scissors lol!*

Linda Grace: I'm not that picky about how my hair is cut, but the styling. I mean, can ANYONE make my hair look decent after a cut besides me? No matter who cuts it or how, I have to go home and either refresh (if I'm lucky) or full-on wet it all down and restyle completely. Also, thank you for putting away the idea that only a dry cut will work for curly hair. That is another one of those curly girl myths that keeps getting perpetuated.

Michelle1970: I am a hairdresser also. I haven't done it professionally in a few years though. I can't find anyone to cut my hair right and it doesn't ever feel even when I do it. I need more layers, like a round layer cut, but everyone just wants to cut my hair in long layers. You should do more videos on haircuts, on curly hair or mannequins that we could learn from. That would be sooooo cool!!!!

Reem Hussain: *”I can’t do the splits but my hair can do the splits”* I never choked so hard

Sara Hall: Hey Mell, for those of us who are unable to get to the salon due to the pandemic (they have closed all hair salons where I live), it would be great to have a basic cutting guide for non-professionals who need a hair cut, but can't get one. :(

Amber Whitley: Literally only 2 minutes in to the video but I have to say- for my hair type a dry curly cut is a must. I was getting straight wet cuts and could figure out why my hair was always wonky and why there were gaps in my hair. It turns out it’s bc the top and front layers of my hair are very coily while the underneath back layer is more of a wavy pattern. Top would shrink up while bottom stayed close to the same creating massive gaps ‍♀️

J S: I came here early so you can read this :) So I know you're ok with sulfates and silicones. The curly girl method teaches us to avoid them (because supposedly they are only for straight hair), yet your hair looks great. But I'm still sure there's a difference between hair products that are good for curly hair versus straight hair. Can you make a video on what products not to buy and how products for straight hair differ from products for curly hair? You can even call it The Mel Method :O

Tiera Ferguson: I love that your videos are so nonbiased. People are usually so headstrong in their own ways that they never show you the benefits of the other ways as well. So thank you!!

Eline Eide: My stylist cuts my hair while it is straightened and i love the way my curls look after! My curls bounced back beautyfully!!

Amber Abbott-Farr: SO EXCITED! I'm excited every Texture Tuesday, but this is a video I really need (didn't realize how much I needed it). Hope you and your family are doing well

Courtney Nelles: Question: I got a cut from a new to me stylist. I actually really like the cut but the styling. was. terrible. It was a wet cut that of course was damp and frizzy from combing after the cut. But she never rewet it! She just added product and tried to scrunch and diffuse and then looked confused as to why it didn’t look like it did when I came in. So I totally understand that not everyone knows how to style curls. Would it be out of line to ask her if she would like some pointers? Because I really like the cut but the styling was so bad I had to immediately go home and redo it.

Dora Mercedes: Thanks for this video. I've had dry cuts on curly hair, dry cuts on straightened hair, and wet cuts. I still prefer wet cuts, especially because I air dry my hair and go a few months without cutting.

AshleyErica: From my experience, when I get a dry cut, I cannot straighten my curly hair without it looking like a bad haircut. However, when I get a haircut after my hair has been straightened, my curls look great when I style them naturally, and I can straighten my hair knowing that my layers and bangs do not look so choppy.

jose martin chilet: we stan this queen so much, love her so much ❤️she always gives us all the curlTEA with laughs included thank u

Ms. Rodriguez_: I like this video! It also would've been great to see a wet cut. There's a misconception that curly hair can't be cut wet.

Jade: Looking forward to this for sure!! I've needed to cut off a couple inches and reshape and told my hairdresser lil' sis, who lives across the country, that my options for me are very limited and especially now with not wanting to go out....so I'll probably try and do it myself :/ but, upside I guess being that 1. It's already a mess so hopefully I can play off a bigger mess as being on purpose and 2. I'm not going out too much right now so it'll sorta grow out maybe by the time I have to....aahahahahaha....so, this will be a great video for me and my messy curls!! :) thanks in advance :)

Sammy Bateman: So i had my own seester cut my hair (who is a professional) using the technique while the hair is dried curly because my hair has a mixed range from 2a curls to 3a curls. It worked sooo well! She was able to cut my 2a waves more shorter to a medium length so that it won’t look as awkward with my tighter curls. Thank you so much! My new haircut has given me a lot more confidence! ❤️

Lauren Hendrick: Thank you for making this video. I’ve had curly cuts, dry straight hair cuts and wet cuts. It was nice to see the blatant difference side by side .

Julie Bruce: I just came back from getting my hair cut dry (on straightened hair) for the first time. She did an AMAZING job! Thanks for all your info!!

Madison Luna: I learned how to diffuse, style and all that to my curly hair and been loving my hair. I also use a bonnet so my hair stays beautiful. You have helped me. Because I would of never known somethings without you or my aunt who works at a hair salon.

Jessenia Castro: Loved this video! Very informational. I actually do the straight cut on myself once a month to get off dead ends without losing length. ( I’m not a professional but I’ve been doing my own hair for years now)

scw73: Thank you for this. I wish so badly that I had seen it a few months ago. My hair is becoming more and more curly but is dramatically different in different areas as well as fine and low density. I went for a haircut not having a clue what I wanted except volume and I'm fairly certain she used thinning shears. Never again.

Gamer Named Darvit: I'm really glad I saw this video! I've been dry cutting curl by curl for my maintenance trims (trying to let my hair grow long again while also growing out layers). My ends are looking whispy and I didn't understand why they looked like that because I trim my ends regularly, don't use heat or chemicals and don't have split ends. I'm due for a trim and this time, I will be blunt cutting my ends while my hair is wet to make sure I get those ends! Thank you so much for the information! ^_^

Gabriëlle: A big applause for you Mell... love the very clear informative way you've shown us the difference between the techniques. love from the Netherlands @Krullenpagina

HayleyTief: I just found your channel today and am binging your videos. Just wanted to say thank you for addressing having different curl patterns! I've always felt very alone in that. My hair is also way curlier on the top of my head, and discovering dry cuts was a game changer for me.

Veronica E. Soto: I love this video❤! Thank you so much for taking the time to educate me about how should I treat my hair better when is time to cutting it

missheathersmiles: I've learned more about my curly hair with your videos than anywhere else. I can already see a difference in the way they look and learning to love them. Thank you. You and sister brighten my day with your videos.

Trish Pipkins: I'm surprised that I like the straight/wet look best. This is so incredibly helpful. I'm trying to avoid heat and grow out my hair. I've tried both ways (dry curl by curl) and wet and felt like I may have done the curl by curl wrong. But after watching this I did it right. My results weren't horrible I just didn't like them as much as when I cut my hair wet. I want length but apparently I want the cleaner look more. Lol. Who knew? Thank you so much!!

Lynda E: I learned I could NEVER cut my hair while straight and dry. Last year, I had to get it re-cut while curly, because one side of my hair was obviously much shorter than the other after getting a dry cut (most likely because I have different types of curls/patterns throughout my head of hair). The more ethnic/textured one's hair is, the better off she/he will be cutting and wearing their hair in it's natural state!

Alisa: Thank you so much Mell❤ just tried some of your tips for definition and my hair already looks so much better! and I'll definitely try these tips in my next cut. btw that color of your shirt looks so good on you!!

Zara Levy: Girl you should be proud of yourself, your amazing

JC7 Blessed: Haters: Well Mell... Kanhair West: yo Imma let you finish but Manes By Mell has one of the best hair cut tutorials of all time.

Moushumi Maharaj: I'm actually going for a trim next Friday and I always feel guilty about straightening my hair to cut it since I always keep my hair curly now. This has really helped me. Thank you Mel.

Nancy D: What do you do when one side has way more volume than the other? would you cut it differently?

Cynthhhi: Hi Mel, thanks for this vid! Are layers better for curly hair? I gave myself a quarantine hair cut. It looks good but it ended up being way shorter than I wanted and I lost the layers that I had (now it's more straight across) I'm so nervous to see what the shrinkage looks like when I leave it naturally (2b/2c hair type) - I've been embracing my natural hair during quarantine.

Rwby The Assassin: I learned the hard way about thinning my hair. I had always had my hair cut by my mother it was long and she just did layers (it was very damaged cause she didn't know how to care and wash it and told me to do it like her straight hair) but I wanted to get it all off into a pixie undercut thing. And my mother wanted to have nothing to with it so for the first time I went to a stylist that my friend recommended they had good reviwes. She cut it off and we were able to donate it. She texturized the crap out of it and also thinned it. She also styled my hair dry with moose and straighed a small section of my hair (the longest part) I went home and stylied it myself it looks so much better now I'm currently growing out the thinned out parts.

Curly Hair by Eden: I love this video! I agree, in the salon I work at we do wet cuts to get every “dead” piece of hair but we also do dry cuts if that’s what you prefer or if shrinkage is super drastic! The only thing i think I didn’t agree on in this video is the slide cutting... yes absolutely hell no to texturizing (I cringeeeee) but there’s a technique called Ouidad cut, and in that technique we slide cut.. ONLY because it helps blend layers and add volume to wavier clients hair or remove weight on super long hair... definitely for curl types 2-3A or 3B. I do not recommend that for tighter curls like yours and mine though it just makes frizz. If anyone is curious my hair page is @eg.curly on insta

Nikki Lopé: MEL!! you straightened your hair for us!! I was getting the DevaCut for a long time and I couldn't figure out why my hair kept looking wonky I finally let my sister who is a balayage educator cut my hair. I thought that since it wasn’t a “curly hair cut” it wouldn’t turn out well. But I’m so glad I tried. My hair looks great now! And it grows out really great as well!

Lashes With Dawn: I love your videos! You inspired me to transition my 46 year old hair. Thank you! ‍

Krystle Life: I'm so thankful for this video!!! I've been needing a cut, but between COVID-19 and me not having a stylist even before all this mess I wasn't sure what I was going to do... Now I feel like I can do it myself! Yay!

Monica Torres: "Throw the whole head away!" I have had this feeling after some real bad cuts when I was younger :P hahaha

Sparkling Red Rose: How sweet of you to sacrifice your own hair with 2 hair cut techniques ❤️ the curly cut side looks cheerful & bouncy & the straight cut side has a more sleek thicker look Ummmm I feel the curly cut side has a more summery vibe look ⛱️ & the straight cut is more of a wintery ☃️❄️

Kim: This video is awesome and super helpful! My question is why shouldn’t you get texturizing thinning? My hair is wavy and really thick and I have a lot of it. I’m wearing it natural most of the time now but used to straighten it all the time. If I don’t have the bulk taken out of my hair, it will look like a big triangle and lack a nice shape regardless of how I wear it.

Aron Dosanjh: I just realized the hairdressers here where I live, always cut my hair in the wrong way exactly how you described it, and that's why I always end up hating it. When I talk about it saying that my curls should not be cut like it's straight people just think I'm being a narcissistic bitch

Kristy Torgeson: Ahhh, Mell! The slide cut! My stylist does it every time even though I've asked her not to! I thought I was crazy thinking that it wasn't right for my thin 2c hair because she said it adds texture. To me it just thins it out more. I'm bout ready to take the scissors in my own hands! I cut my husband's hair, so I don't feel completely unprepared. My only concern is getting the hair on the back of my head decently shaped. Thank you for these tips! PS I saw you cut into your ends on the dry cut after trimming off the split ends- what does that do?

makayla sandra: Submitted my testimony for your admission to the Sephora Squad love your videos, personality and education!

Diane L: What a great idea! I just got a curly hair cut but I want it to look cute also if I straighten it! You are genius girl! ❤️

Cathie Phillips: I can’t imagine anyone doing this on themselves! You’re awesome!

randomwithKurstie!: Aww I really love your darker roots, I think the contrast with your hair and skin looks so good! But it's your hair so do you..

Piper0516: Ok. Maybe you’ve covered this and I missed it but I’m ready working to love my curls because I’ve hated them my whole like. You’ve helped exponentially. I have found purple rice Shea Moisture being the best for my hair’s natural curls without adding any other products. It looks beautiful but I’m still working toward finding ways to do my hair that allows me to pull it up for workouts every day without ruining the curls. I can’t stand touching my hair and having stuff on my hands or it gets on my face and I have to wash my hands even more than I already do. I’m working to find things to use to enhance the volume and definition of my curls. I love both my curls and straight hair. I don’t put anything in my hair when I straighten it. I’m up for suggestions.

Shari Perlman: Mel, I love your videos! My hair stylist says he like to cut my hair wet because my hairs might not fall in the same curl every time. You Said This! My hair is medium, fine and not so dense. B4 2020, I styled my hair most of the time. I'm addicted to getting my hair cut every 6-8 weeks. Mel, how long should I go b4 my next cut? I'm at week 4 and itching to make my next cut. It isn't about split ends, but change in the old and new in the shape.Stay healthy, happy and safe!

LadyShiva16: Mell, thanks to your videos I've now had the courage to cut my own hair (twice now) and lol and behold! It turned out well! I have 2a-2c waves and they look much better now. Even getting a bit curlier. So thanks!

cameron bennett: Can you show how you do a dusting next time you need to do one? These hair cutting videos of yours have been really helpful and you're the only person on youtube that I trust to show and talk about ways to do a dusting properly. You've helped me understand my hair better and I am so happy that you post videos so consistently.

Sabrina Bailey: As a curly hair specialist in the NYC area I love this comparison!! Really good reference for both stylists and clients to see what works best.

Alegna LaVieenRose: My bestie is also a hairdresser and she insists on always cutting my hair (2c/3a) hair wet, your video visualized her explanation as to why

cameron bennett: I just got a hair cut last week, and I like it, but I found some split ends while looking at my hair after watching this video, so I like seeing the ways I could go about fixing it. Do you recommend just trimming the split ends as I find them(there's not too many) without touching the rest of the hair or do you think I should try and go to a hair stylist? With the covid-19, though, I would prefer to do it myself. I'm still making my way through your videos, so if you have a video on this already, I'm happy to be redirected to it by anyone reading this comment. Any advice is helpful. On a different note, I like this video a lot. I've been experimenting how to style my hair by using different techniques on each side of my hair and figuring out what I like better. Seeing side by side comparisons helps to see the cause and effect relationship so thank you do doing these types of videos.

Curly Jess Journey: This video could not have come at a better time, I’m getting a haircut this Friday YOU’RE AMAZING!

LakersFan1185: I love the perfect haircut that is achieved from a dry cut. I did a curly haircut and I hated how it’s not uniform.

Rebecca: Its like you read my mind Mel, looking forward to learn!❤

Margot Skadberg: Mell, its taken a long time but thanks to you I love to wear my hair curly! I am so thankful to you for this. I wanted to know if you suffer from fairy knots? You know, those little hard tangled balls of hair at the bottom of the strands that are almost impossible to untangle without...(sob) having to break them off? These are making me crazy, its so hard to grow my hair to begin with....and yes, I detangle thoroughly on wash day. Mell, could you devote some time in a video to how to combat these nasty little knots? Hail to the Queen!

Bridget Barrett: Hello! I love your videos! I have such a problem keeping my curls, by day three they are already super frizzy and undefined even though I use SO MUCH product. I have a similar curl type to Amanda and could use some help stretching the time between wash days.

Undescribed _: I typically wear my hair both curly and straight. I also style my hair for work. For me the straightened vs curly look really depends on the weather and if my hair wants to behave. However, I always get my hair cut after it is straightened. I have been seeing my beautician for 14 years wowww lol so she knows my hair very well. What we usually do is take a look at it before, when it is dry in its curly state. Determine what’s going on with the shape and what I like and don’t like about certain areas for her to better decide how to cut it. We have to do this because I don’t tend to keep the same cut all year. 6 months ago I may have had her cut my bangs regularly then I decided that I don’t want bangs anymore so it turns into and entirely new cut that I want to look good both straight and curly. This will also depend on the length of my hair. No matter how many times I say I am going to grow my hair out. I get tired of it suffocating me in the summer and have her cut inches off . Anyway after discussing what I am envisioning my hair like she will wash & condition it, straighten, clip my split ends then shape/style it. This has always worked for me! Thank you, I love your videos.

Karen BellyTribal: Thank you I cut my ends (wet cut) by myself because I'm looking for length. Once I achieve it I will try a curl by curl cut for shape

Stream _Punked: Hi, I am new to your channel and really love the tips you give, your awesome . I was wondering if you had any hairdo suggestions that would keep hair off of ones face while they worked, without wreaking the curls themselves. I have rather long hair see, if goes down to the small of my back when dry, and am having a hard time finding a hairdo that works well. Any suggestions welcome!

iamJWILLIAMS: This video was sooooo helpful!!!! thank you!

Jordan Murphy: Hi Mell! I love your videos! I was wondering if you could make a video about short curly hair? (bob length and shorter) Is there anything we should be doing different for styling/cuts/sleeping, etc or is it pretty much the same? Hairstyles would be fun too! Thanks!

Kings Mom831: This is why YOU, are the hair queen!

Loraine Mcgillivray: Yes to a video on root colouring. I have naturally mid blonde hair with some bleach and some high lift tint highlights to disguise the sprinkle of white I have at 48 (missed out grey and went straight to white). I just put a few in the top layers and use a cool toner every few months to refresh my colour without overbleaching etc. I'm always happy to improve my technique though. Best wishes.

Alyssa V: girl your hair is sooo pretty! i love it so much!!!!! i don’t have curly hair (i have wavy hair) but i still love your channel! ❤️

Jessica Jimenez: Love this video. It good to know there is not a right or wrong way to cut curly hair. Also great to know to not thin out the hair. I use to have that done but not any more.

Leiy D Beauty: yes , I want to see the blonde video. I like to wear my curls both curly and blown out. Ive tried the curl by curl and I hate the way my hair looks after. I do like the straight cut, so now I don't feel bad for cutting it straight.

French Fry: Another great video! I've wondered about this topic a lot, so this was very timely and informative.

okichigai: Can you explain to me what thinning shears do on curly hair? I told the stylist at my last dusting scissors only and no thinning shears (because I've heard it's bad). Just trying to understand the why behind it.

Griselda Mendoza: I’m so happy I found your videos!! My daughter has curly hair and I have no clue how to care for it. My daughter is 2 and is just about to have her first hair cut. Thank you so much for all your tips

soooztm: Loved this! Thank you! So helpful!

Emna M: This helped a lot! Also, quick storytime : I just got my hair cut professionally only to decide that I'm gonna redo it myself. My hair dresser had relaxed hair herself and clearly no clue on how to manage curly hair (she ripped my hair while detangling). Her idea about layers was to chop it all around with THINNING SHEARS ! I was mortified! I'm really glad people like you exist so curly girls can understand their hair and manage it better. Love your channel !

Ieke K: You're makeup and nails are gorgeous! And that blue shirt looks beautiful on you <3

Brittany Van Muyen: Ahhh! I definitely have had my hair thinned, back when I didn't know what I was doing with my curls. Hahaha worst decision ever lol

Ellen R: No hair left behind. I enjoy your videos, I always laugh and learn. Thank you!

Sunflower Reader: Mel, what do you think I should do to stop hair loss? I've been losing a lot of hair lately, could it be protein or moisture overload? Love you Mell, you're a curly icon!!!

Sarah C: Great video to start my few weeks off from our gov shutting down spas to prevent spread of COVID-19! I know I'll need a trim soon, bit gotta wait of course. My fave 2 stylists cut my hair damp & straight, but in a way that looks great straight & curly/wavy, so I can't complain.

Erika Aguilar: I've recently been wearing my hair consistently naturally wavy/curly. I have A LOT of thick hair and always get it thinned because it's just so heavy. Why is it bad to thin it out?

Nemesis Noel: I need to cut my hair again but I’m not really sure what shape or how much to cut right now. Lately it’s been feeling really dry and damaged so I’m trying to get back to healthy curls.

tiya967: What I'm learning is basically "unlearning" everything I learned through the curl method and Deva curl fad I've been consumed with and spent all my money on for the past almost 6 years. I ruined my hair with straightening all the time, but I miss what it was like before this. I thought diving hardcore into the curly world would fix everything. The last time I straightened my hair (which I hadn't done for almost 3 years), I realized how fragile, thin and uneven my hair was. :'( I'm lost right now, but I will follow your wisdom because from the first video I saw over a year ago...all I thought was YAAASSS! PS. can you do a video specifically about the different haircuts depending on how you style your hair and needs (like you mentioned in this video) <3

Marissa Harrison: I’ve tried two “curly” cuts in the past year and both were kind of bad. The first was a Devacut which was terrible and grew out so badly. The second was better but still didn’t look great. And like others said stylists aren’t always very good at styling wavy/curly hair. So from now on I’m just getting regular cuts.

J H: Every time I get my haircut by a new stylist I tell them that I can't have texturizing shears, but they still end up "slide cutting" it. My hair is fine, and wavy... and the slide cutting has made it terribly unmanageable. I can't seem to find a stylist that understands, or how to convey this to them.

Kelsey T: I tried a rezo/curly cut in 2018 and my hair was butchered and uneven. I feel my hair is too coily so No thank you never again that taught me a lesson. I for now on get my hair cuts/trims On blown out hair and have had no issues with my hair that way.

Gabriella Ballestas: Thanks for the tip! how can I get my hair cut if my bottom half is completely straight and the rest is curly? my stylists never believe that my hair grows like that.

Noehmi: I am so picky with my hair but also have a hard time telling the stylist if I don't like what they have done. My curl pattern is different all over and I really like having a wet cut. The stylist that just cut my hair had me looking like Diana Ross, I love her, dried it and then cut it. I didn't tell her I didn't like the styling but i really didnt like the cut either. I went home and trimmed it a little more. I wish I could find a stylist like you with experience with textured hair Love all your videos and have learned a lot

Galilea Serrano: I do both. I straighten my hair first and get give myself a trim. Then I wash it and style it in its natural form. Later I shape it to the way I would like to wear it. Works fine for me

CajunChild: Ohh, this explains a lot! I would always get my hair cut wet, but the under parts of my hair get coily and the top doesn’t curl as tight, so I would always have that triangle head thing going on. Now I know!

Michele Wickett: I have an appt for a HC on April 7th (Keeping my fingers crossed). I'm going to have my stylist watch this with me. I'm going for your HC directions. Thank you Mell

Jessica Brewster: Have you ever tried styling your hair with a Wet Brush instead of a Denman Brush? I noticed the Wet Brush clumps my hair so much more than the Denman Brush! You should try it! I’d be curious to hear how it works for you.

Vanana: Perfect timing, I didn't have a chance to get a haircut before we started staying indoors because of school. But now I'll be able to cute at home! Thank you so much!

Ken Leung: I personally think cutting your own hair while is straight pretty easy for have curly hair!

Soft Rain: The straight/wet cut looks definitely better. I like the fullness and evenness of the shape

Tammy S: I am SOOOOOO Blessed. I met my hair goddess in beauty school and she is not only my best friend she's been doing my hairs for over 20 years. She knows my hairs well!!

Lyniese Pellecier: This helps so much and now I’m not so worried about cutting my hair while it’s straight

itsashleygisell: Mell thank you for this video! I’ve been transitioning from a round cut to a more length all over hair shape. I want it to look like I’ve lived in the jungle and never had bangs, and my hair is long and full of long luscious curls. Get it? Lol I’m achieving that slowly but I’m doing it through trail and error. Learning techniques on YouTube and compiling everything. I have yet to come across a video that explains exactly what I need to be doing in order to achieve that cut. Pwetty please get a lil specifee about this cut that I want to achieve

Anabela Nenadic: Love this video it was very helpful and informative
