You have to separate everything into three sections. One two three you're gon na cross cross uh, give me a b. Give me an r give me an a i d b. You guys did not do great on that. Let'S try it again. Give me a b. Give me an r give me an a id, thank god welcome to beginner braids 101, so my hair is curly, so i want to give it a little bit of slip. I'M just going to take the air dry or the instant recovery. Serum put it on the base of this part of the braid put this on this part. If your hair is straight or like really straight or really really fine, and you want to do a braid, i definitely would suggest applying a salt spray throughout your hair or a texturizer. If it's really really straight and fine, you could even do our air dry cream. You could put it on your hair dry. You could mist your hair, flipping your hair upside down and then diffusing a little bit of air dry cream into your straight fine hair. It'S going to help to give it a little bit of hold a little bit of texture without feeling crunchy. It'S just going to kind of emphasize your texture and give the braids something to kind of hold on to so. The first thing i'm going to show you is just like a simple braid, just braiding, your hair down. The reason that i, like these clear elastics is because you just don't see it in the hair as much as like a big um hair tie. First, you have to separate everything into three sections: one two, three you're going to cross cross up; one two, three and also two. This is like a rachel ray thing. I always talk about like she made this like vanilla box cake where it was like vanilla cake with, like strawberry ice cream and she's like. But if you don't like vanilla cake, you, like strawberry ice cream, you can do it like different flavors. So that's kind of how this is too, like there's a million ways to do it. Okay, this is just one, but basically it's just really literally simply we're gon na braid we're just gon na do a little braid, so we're gon na take this side we're gon na cross it over the top and then i'm going to hold the braid. In this hand, between my index finger and middle finger, i'm going to take this chunk with my left hand, grab it and put this left chunk over the top. So you can see the braids starting to form i'm going to take this cross it over the top, and you could really braid over or under i'm doing over, and you can see the braid is starting to happen. Okay actually see how the the sizes that the braids got uneven, i'm going to take this fat chunk and split it to kind of re-establish the three sections which won't hurt anything i'm gon na keep braiding. Then i'm gon na bring it to the front, and i'm just gon na finish the braid and i'm gon na use this clear, hair tie, which is actually two to secure it. I'M just gon na do this fun thing where you take the outsides of the braid and you pull it apart, and it just makes the braid a little bit more romantic. A little bit more, like whimsy, also makes it a little bit more full, i'm just taking my fingers and working the braid and see it's good. If you have any of these little pieces sticking out it's okay, it doesn't have to be perfect, i'm pulling it apart and then what you can do, if you wanted to you, could like use this as like the basis for a little low sung, bun or a Little updo you could like twist this braid up so now, i'm just going back and gon na pull out a little bit more of the sides. If you wanted to you could like do a little ribbon on the bottom, you could put like a little barrette here. Obviously, if your hair is longer it's going to give you more of a braid if you're someone who wears extensions, this is a really good braid, because it can just kind of hide everything. It'S a good like little in-between style, but look how cute it is just an easy, braid good job go braids number one can't hear you now. If you feel like a snoozefest girl, i came out of the womb knowing how to do that. Braid. I got another trick for you, i'm just going to take that little hair tie out actually one trick that you can do with these hair ties. You can put oil on it and i'll, take it right off and i'm just going to pull that out. Okay, this next braid is going to start to introduce us to a french braid okay. So what you're going to do to start this french braid, which you could do it from here, but it's harder. So this is braids 101 remember, so we've got to start somewhere. So i'm going to start with just some hair right here at the top of my head, so just from there and i'm gon na start my braid here. So we have one two, three three sections. So when you french, braid you're gon na, like gather hair as you braid, so i'm just going to start with a normal braid, and you see how i'm trying to keep my hands more towards my scalp. I'M not trying to hold the hair um way down the hair shaft. You want to keep it pretty close to your scalp and i like to hold my hands on top of the hair. Instead of from underneath now on this side, i'm going to gather a little bit of extra hair, i use my index finger to scoot scooch scooch. I grab a chunk and i'm going to pull it underneath that section and then that's me just cleaning up and making sure there's no extra hairs. Now, i'm on this side, so we're gon na get this tail. I'M gon na grab a little bit of hair scoot. It in pick it up and pull it underneath that section you could put the sections on top or underneath one's gon na make a cornrow one's gon na make a french braid. You see, i still have my three sections. I'M now on this side, i'm gon na take a little bit with my index finger. I grab that section, i'm gon na put it underneath and you just continue this side to side. Now, i'm really coming here with my index finger, i'm gon na grab grab grab. I scooch those together now, i'm on this side. I'M gon na grab this section, this hair scooch scooch scooch. I have it all together here in these fingers and i'm just gon na feed it underneath into my middle finger, making sure i don't have any extra hair and now here we go now we're over on this side. I'M going to grab it i'm going to scooch it. I really like to travel with my hair like this. It keeps it out of my face, keeps me from getting hot and now you're going to start to run out of hair, so we're gon na grab this scooch it underneath scooch scooch, and now it just turns into a braid and yeah. You just sprayed it to the ends. Now. If you wanted to get fancy, you could take this tie it with a hair tie. Then you could like roll it under pen to turn it into like a little bit of a shaker braid or you can let it stay down. I'M going to come around and grab some of my little trusty hair ties, and then you could do that same thing. If you wanted to pull these out so see, i'm using my fingers to feel around because it's so much easier to do someone else's hair than your own. But my fingers know what it's like to do someone else's. So you just use your fingers to feel yeah that feels cute, i'm a braid, it's so pretty. Every breed has a personality of their own, so yeah. These are just two really fun ways to get braids started. Try it out um see what you like the little braids you have are cute. If you want to do that, one like how to like take one chunk and do a little braid, then another one that jared's just requested with his one inch long hair. So here's another fun thing you could do it helps if your hair is a little longer, but you could take like this braid it braiding braiding, braiding, braiding braiding. Yes, yes, yes, then we're gon na make it fatter. It'S giving me lauren conrad in the hills. Yes, spencer, that's heidi, oh lauren had brody, oh, he does chris. He sells crystals now. Yes, he really does oh yeah hummingbirds too he's like a hummingbird dealer or something is that going to be what happens to my career in like 12 years? Okay? So that's this brain braid, so i'm gon na braid this side. This is kind of like the cersei season. One through five, like before shame, is what this is gon na turn out to be so i'm just pulling these braids apart, giving it a little bit of texture, we're going to tie that together at the base and voila you're done just kidding. No, so then you take this and you're going to scooch it back, and then you just put the braids on either side, and then it just turns out like this well anyway, thanks for coming to braids 101 you're gorgeous you're stunning, if you're still watching this video You'Re, a real one. I love you ah, like comment subscribe. Oh yeah tag me if you recreate this on instagram stories, get your brain on love. You you

Dodoushka: This is the first time I learn how to make a french braid and it turned out fabulous from the first try. I've been wanting to learn this since I was a child, good thing I learned just a week before I turn 30. Thank you beautiful awesome amazing JVN. Lots of love from Romania

Flowery Vegas: I learned how to braid on my American girl dolls, but was never all that great at French braiding. This is a super easy to follow along tutorial and I appreciate that you did it on yourself. Thanks for the helpful tips, Queen! I appreciate you

Elissa Strem: These ideas are both motivating and inspiring. I do a simply French braid sometimes but I will try just a few of these simple steps to glam up my look! Get me out of the ponytail rut!

Nyte_Blade: So nice to start my day with some JVN energy. You make me smile. Thank you for sharing your light with the world!

MSK: I’ve been braid-averse all my life and now I’m inspired. Turns out what I needed all along was a full body demonstration of the braiding process and tips for curly hair. And JVN air dry cream, which I already have (OBVI! Because its the best!).

CC: Loving this tutorial! Thanks for the 101 tips! T.T Also, as someone who's starting to embrace/learn more about my curly/wavy texture, I love your hair as inspo! Hope we can get more tutorials on maintaining wavy/curly hair as well. Would love that. Thank you JVN! <3

Jeanpants: Jonathan, can you please do a video on flattering haircuts for different types of face shapes? Love youuuu <3

Jennifer Loher: Going to try these on my daughter! My hair is short and curly but this will be helpful for me to try that french braid and small braids in her hair.❤️

Heidi Kohl: I literally learned how to braid from volleyball. And then I had YEARS of practicing on my own! I’m still trying to master the four strand braid!! Literally feels impossible on myself

yesmissjane: that third braid is so cute, and honestly, I've never seen anyone making it before. Thank you!!!

Queen hWitch Melody: I'm mesmerized by your ability to so easily braid behind your head I like to do the first braid. And I like doing the one where you have 2 baby braids that hang down near the front. I don't think I look good in french braids though because the underside of my hair usually looks oily :x

Stacie Robbins: The first time I've had a lesson in french braiding! You're a fun, light and engaging teacher- so good at what you're doing! Would love to hear you say, "scooch, scooch, scooch." all day. How about a video on self-install clip on extensions?? Maybe I'm missing one in your files but considering the investment in self-care for my super thin, wrecked from chemo, curly hair. Thank you for bringing a squishy light and love into the world!

Jennifer BBB: Omg this is a weekend hair practise project!!! Always relied on my mom to braid my hair…when I was a kid and now it’s time to take the hair reins and ……….B-R-A-I-D ‍♀️

Teela Kovacs: This is such a great 101 for lost potential of styles for medium and long hair. I would just add the tip to not involve a mirror as it can just confuse your hands if you're beginning to learn. I really loved that you chose to work on your own head. Braiding your own hair vs. someone else's can be a whole thing! Love you

Kristina Rush: Thank you so much for this video! I have 2 active daughters with long hair and I am not at all a braiding professional! The tip to start at the back of the head and not the front for a french braid is going to be a game-changer for me! Thank you!!!!

hazeleyeschick jen: Love this! We now need a Braid 201 course! Dutch braids, fish tail braids, corn rows etc. Other styles that use braids too. Thank you and love you!

Courtney Christopherson: Hi Jonathan I'm a session hair stylist and makeup artist and I am obsessed with you. I love your energy and personality so much! I feel like you have a way with people and you might have some magical tips for us. Anyways that would be amazing.

Nicole Campos: The crown braid brings me back to my figure skating competition days. My mom would braid my whole head into the crown.

Candice Lamberth: I cannot thank you enough for making this video. I can do a basic braid, but cannot seem to master the French braid. My daughter complains that mine are too loose, so she asks my hairstylist sister to do it when she visits. ‍♀️

Rav P: OMG, the first time I've managed to do a French braid after following your steps!! Yaayy! Thank you ❤️

A Redheads Ramblings: I appreciate that you did them on yourself. Too many tutorials are done on someone else so if you're trying to learn how to braid your own hair it's hard to translate it to what your hands need to be doing while behind your head and you can't see what you're doing

Especially how to do a French braid was top tier on my list as my grandmother used to to this for everybody when I was younger and I want to keep the tradition! Thank you

Colleen Chatterton: Thank you so much Jonathan. I also have been thinking so much about how to do braids. My hair is quite thin, but I love the look of braids. During Covid my hair has grown out, so it's long enough to braid. Can you do some more with braids and ways to put your hair up in a bun. I'd like to leave my hair long, just because I enjoy long hair. But I want to learn how to braid it so that it looks OK. Otherwise my hair is too scattered. I'm sort of tired of having to wear short hair. Thank you so, so much. And thanks for showing us how you can braid your own hair. This is most helpful!

Aarti M: Thanks for the video! I can do the kind of french braid you showed, where the braid "sticks out" but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do the kind of french braid on myself where the braid doesn't stick out....if you make another braiding video, would love to see that!

Katy DeBardelaben: The way my mouth dropped open when he tied the two braids together and flipped them back to make a flower crown So casually dropping bombs like everyone knows that!! Do you know how hard I’ve tried my whole life to hold one braid with my mouth while braiding the other side and then trying to get them together without unraveling?! AMAZING.

Kiki Gilmer: My hair is just about to my waist and I braid it every night and it takes such a weirdly long amount of time to braid it all the way to the bottom. I felt your pain doing that little braid in the front, lol!!

Cristina Camacho Salazar: The third braid is everything! Thanks Jared for making Jonathan do it! Hahaha

Alyssa Alexander: Question - Any tips for braiding with shorter hair (like just past one's chin)? I always find that braiding my hair now that it's in a bob is really hard. Love you JVN!! <3
