If you have long hair, should you have layers? Yes, because long hair with no layers will be flat and straight. If you have long hair, it will be heavy. Now I'm not talking about short layers. But you need long layers so you actually have a little movement. That way you can actually wear your hair either wavy or straight, but at least your hair will move.
When you do layers around the face, it's called a framing, and that's actually going to frame your face. Depending on how short the layers will be, it will give you . . . for example, if you have a piece of your layer starting here, going all the way down, that will do a nice framing.
What happens when you have the layers in your hair is that it also gives you an opportunity to actually put your hair up, and keeping some of those pieces will make your face actually look softer. That's why if you have long hair you should definitely have some layers.
If you have thick hair, you can have a little bit more layers. If you have fine hair, you should have less layers so that you don't lose all the thickness at the end.
