Why Do My Curls Fall Out After Curling?

So many of you ask, why do my curls fall out after I curl my hair? There can be so many different variables: texture of your hair, products you use, type of curling iron/wand or flat iron, what temperature you use, etc. Today, I want to focus on one of the variables: how long you hold your hair on the curling barrel and what temperature you use.

Y'All was so excited for this video. One of the biggest questions that I get asked on pretty much all of my platforms is: why does my hair fall out after I curl my hair? I think probably one of the biggest variables is: how long do you keep it on your curling iron, your curling wand and so forth, and today we're gon na test that variable one section is going to be ten seconds. The second section is going to be twenty seconds and the third section is going to be thirty seconds today, I'm using the Kristin s. This is her one in 1/4 inch curling barrel, just a simple wand without a clip and the reason why I'm using a curling wand without a clip or a flat iron is because this will be very easy to keep track of the time and you'll be able To see the hair on the barrel itself and I have a set a 325 degrees Fahrenheit and I will keep the same temperature throughout the entire experiment. Alright, let's begin, I have separated my hair into three sections. They might not be equal, but whatever we just want to get three sections. So this right here, first section is going to be the ten second section. The section behind me in the back is going to be the twenty second section, and then this right here on my left side, the front left side is going to be a thirty second section, and I have no product in my hair just because I don't need It all right, so I'm just gon na take this first section divide it in half, just because I want to make sure I get as much hair and not use such big chunks of hair. That makes sense. This just makes it easier for me all right. I'M gon na try to keep the sections as similar as possible. All right, Andre is gon na time it and he's gon na. Tell me when to let go after ten seconds: hey babe, all right ten seconds and the way he's counting is he's starting to count as soon as I finish, wrapping the hair around the barrel, you just always be my counter - makes it so much easier for me. I don't you think as much moving on to section 3, which is 30 seconds all right so now that I'm finally done with all the sections I'm gon na make sure the 20 and the 32nd sections cool off completely. I can still feel the heat on this side a little bit in the back, but the right side is completely cooled off just because it was literally ten seconds per sections and basically I'm gon na cool it off for probably like five minutes or so and I'll Quickly want to show you guys before I brush everything out what the curls look like and if you can see a difference from the front to the back to the other side. Obviously you can see already a huge difference from the right to the left, all right. So ten seconds all right, it's been five minutes and I can now touch it and it all feels the same temperature. I'M gon na brush out the curls and we'll see how the entire look looks like. I am going to use a brush and we are gon na go throughout the day and see how well the curls last and how fast they all fall out. So 10, 20 versus 30 seconds. Let'S look at it now, once they're brushed out, I'm going to go out there. People gon na look super weirdly at my hair. What is going on there something's different, but I can't pinpoint it let's go eat some food. Five hours later see what the hair looks like. How does it look like Andre, because I can't really see it is a lot society still defined 30 seconds? How is the 22nd side just kind of goes away and then 10 seconds is obviously it still looks good. I can kind of see it in my phone very, very loose compared to this cider here, but they all still look really good. All right, I'm just giving you guys all sorts of different lighting in the studio we're actually gon na go play. Some excuse me we're actually gon na go play some tennis, because I want to see how well does hair behaves after I play a sport or go workout or play tennis. So we're gon na go play some tennis right now, and it is roughly it is 8:00 p.m. it is roughly 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside so a little bit chilly, but we'll see how the hair reacts and acts and we'll see what happens and I'll see you guys Later on tonight, I'm picking up my hair for a really intense tennis game. I came not to mess around, but also I want to see how well their hair lasts. I'Ll play some pentose super sweaty all rights to the hair. Oh, I am sweating. How does it look? The other side almost fell out this one yeah wow. That was a great cardio five all right, so it is a little past 10 p.m. we just came back had to stop by the store to grab a CVS since it's on sale, you're into that go check out your local Kroger, it's on sale, all right. So let's look at the hair and we did check the humidity. The humidity was high 70s, I think was like 77 in our area, so we really put the hair through the ringer through the test. I think we did good. I want to brush the hair out. First, just because I was running around all that good stuff, so we can really see how smooth the hair is. No kind of definition. We have. The 30 second side looks like the 10 second side when we began the 10 second side is still holding on, but the curls are very loose, they're kind of like a barely there Bend Andre. Let me know how the twenty second side looks, because I can't see so there we have it. You guys can see what the curls look like from 10 seconds 20 seconds to 30 seconds, holding them on the curling iron and how they fall out progressively throughout the day. I think, regardless of how long you hold it, you can see that obviously the less time you hold it at 325 degrees Fahrenheit, the faster they will fall out and they will kind of look like a barely-there curl. At the end of the day, I am going to sleep and then wake up tomorrow morning, and I will show you guys what the hair looks like after sleeping know what I was gon na say alright guys. I will see you tomorrow morning. It is the next morning I just finished my makeup and I still haven't brushed my hair. I wanted to brush my hair with you guys. I know special moments. Yeah, you can see thirty-second curls, still beautiful a nice bend to the hair. I think you can definitely see the progression even from yesterday, when we just finished curling the hair, the ten seconds it was very loose compared to the 20 in the 30 seconds. This could be the variable that does make your curls fall out faster than he really should. My hair is very fine and texture and thin and straight so it doesn't naturally keep a curl as best as a naturally curly haired person. So for my opinion on this channel, I never recommend anybody with any kind of hair texture to go up super high to the 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Your hair does not need it. All you need is going to lower temperature setting hold it for a little bit longer. There are many brands that prove it that even up to 300, your hair doesn't need it just hold it. A little bit longer be safe with your hair. Just make sure you understand when your hair needs. I think this is a very great visual. Even for myself just to see the progression of what happens from 10 to 20 to 30 seconds. For me personally, what I like I like to stick between 20 to 30 seconds, especially with the curling wand, just because you're not really passing your hair through on both sides, I like to hold a person a little bit longer on a lower temperature. Setting again, I want to mention this and cannot stress this enough. Please be careful, especially with higher temperature settings. Try out the lower temperature settings and hold it for a little bit longer, obviously start off with a little bit lower time and lower temperature. For example, if you go about 300 degrees, Fahrenheit hold it there for, like 20 seconds, see what happens and then progress through 30 seconds and maybe progress to 35 depending on your hair type, but please start off very slow and low. That'S the game slow and low. I hope you guys enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for watching and I'll see you in the next one. I love you all so much bye. You

Anna Schwarz: What I did so my curls finally stayed: smaller sections, smaller wand, a little higher heat/holding longer, a bit of hairspray, do your curls on second day hair with a bit of dry shampoo

jaimeh761: In my opinion, it isn't about the heat, but about the cool down! If I use rollers, I let them cool completely before I take them out. If I use a wand or iron, once I remove it, I don't touch my hair until it has completely cooled off. Then I'll go in and brush, and style etc. This ensures I have curls all day.

katiedoll1: It has a lot to do on your hair type. I have very very thick heavy hair. I can curl my hair (with no product) and by the time I get to my top layer the bottom layers curl is gone. I literally have to put mousse in and hair spray Before curling and after, just to have the curl last all day. Actually the best curls I get is putting mousse in, doing Dutch braids, and let my hair dry over night....which I learned from you. So thanks for that haha

Rebecca Jaycox: LOVE THIS TYPE OF VIDEO! Especially cause I was having this question while using my Kristen Ess 1 1/4in clipped curling iron. But I think maybe I wasn’t holding enough because it’s a much heavier tool than I’m used to& I don’t wanna burn myself

Sophia Moskalo: I'm terrified of using a wand. I'm afraid of burning myself. It just feels so awkward to hold for me. I much prefer a curling iron. I've tried the flat iron but haven't mastered the learning curve on that yet. Hairspray typically holds my curls/waves best. Nothing works like actually sleeping in rollers like I used it though. Didn't get much sleep so I haven't done that in years.

Katha rina: For me, it makes a huge difference what I do right after curling the hair. I do not touch the curls basically after curling them but leave them in the tight curl, bend over and sort of go through the roots with my finger tips on the scalp.

Kiana: The Styler Extender from Living Proof is my holy grail. I have naturally curly hair but I do like to blow dry it flat and sometimes do curls with my styling iron from time to time. The Style Extender is the only thing that has made the heat-created curls last through the day and into the next!

Monica Machuca: *Ladies, it all depends on your hair type* ☺

Cindy Snow: One of the few things I can't complain about my hair...it holds a style well. This is a great video and I just might buy a wand soon.

Corina Chakalian: I have very fine silky hair as well and my hair stays the best when I pin the curl up after curling! They last a whole 5 days when I do that. And if you’re in a hurry you can just hold the curl in your hand until it cools down a bit

Steph M-G: Great video. I have this exact problem. I have super healthy, dark hair and always wondered why my curls fell out. Since it’s healthy I have it on the high heat setting but I’m going to try the lower heat setting for longer and see if I have the same experience!

Alana Marie: I have thick, wavy/curly hair and curl my hair with a NuMe wand set at 180°C for 15 seconds. The curls normally last me about 3 days. It depends on the hair type and how well the hair holds a curl to see how long it will take it to loosen.

Erin Kelligher: I love the end of the day loose curl look

Rachel Miller: My hair is fine and silky, but I have a lot of hair. I have learned my hair holds curls best with heatless, overnight braids. Garnier has a pretty decent curl gel and mousse. They're not too sticky as long as you don't put too much in.

Jeza B: I have straight, fine hair, and I lost a lot of volume due to a lengthy hospitalization. I have tried gels, mousses, hair spray, anything I can get on my hair, and I’ve never been able to keep a curl in it. I’ll try the longer heating method and see if that helps. Love you so much! You look glorious, as always!

Alex Turner: Another Tip: alternate your curls by curling one, one way and then the next one the other way. That way your curls don’t conform together and make only big curl and fall together, so alternating them they are going against each other and essentially holding each other up.

Supernova: 30 seconds seems like a LOOOONG time to be holding the wand on your hair. If you turned the heat up you could get the same result as the 30 second side in 10 seconds. I use the correct heat setting for 10 seconds and my hair holds all day. Everyone’s hair is different too though.

TerriAtHealthyAttitudes: My hair is very much like yours, I use Bumble & Bumble texture spray and B&B heat protection and it makes so much difference, you be can use a touch of hairspray and it also helps

Rikki Kazee: My curls fall as soon as I get done curling it. What can I do to make them stay?

Ashendoll: I'm on a journey to glow up, and the one thing I wanna learn for my fine thin hair is how to curl it! It's my dream to have lovely curls like these to make me feel younger and prettier (I'm 26 going through serious premature aging). I've been devouring youtube videos, but if you girls have any tips, PLEASE gimme some!

Natalya Lytwynec: I've found that using the Living Proof 5 in 1 styling product when my hair is wet is the only thing that has held my curl all day and even the next

Shell Bell: Would the Dyson Corale straighter (used to curl) be more gentle on your hair than a curling wand? I would buy it for sure if I knew that it was.

Peach. gguk: Also if you have a problem with after putting hairspray/cream and they start to fall, don’t use them anymore. I used to curl my hair and put hairspray but they just flattened my curls. I stopped using it and my curls can be held for dayysssss!

Kayla Cawthon: Seriously- so helpful! Thank you

Ace Lightning: Back in the day, we used to have to sleep with curlers in our hair overnight. And even with that, the curls would fall out by lunchtime.

MEANiiCHiCHi: This is an awesome really DETAILED VIDEO!! I appreciates videos like this thank you!!

antieeee: I feel like your hair never gets frizzy even after you work out !! How do you control your hair friz? Please tell us your secrets!!

Renae G.: I was told that since I have fine, straight, virgin hair, that my curls won't hold up well no matter what I do. I can use hairspray, dry shampoo, second day hair, and they won't hold. So annoying!

shelby h: Ugh I just got my hair cut and have been miserable before I found your channel thanks so much! What shampoo are you currently using?

Joanna: I always do the same curl type with my curling wand. I have a slim one with a clip. I had a similar from another brand before. But since I have the new one, my hair stinks while using it. And the smell stays in my hair up tp 4 washes. It does not stink burned. Even if I don't use product. One time I wiped the wand with alcohol before curling and the smell was less. Do any of you have experienced that?

Erin C: I’m thinking there are other factors than time on the iron as to why people lose curls. Maybe you could go over the other variables and how to combat them. But I do like the idea of lower temps but longer time on the iron.

Joan Potanko: Your hair is beautiful no matter what you do to it. Love your videos

Julia Pearson: My hair holds the curl too much so it is harder to get that beachy 'straight' curl. I do have curly hair naturally. So less time for me! I don't brush them out with a brush either, so maybe I can try that! If I brush it straight with the Dyson Airwrap it is starting to wave within a couple of hours, so keeping my hair straight is a struggle, lol.

barbara huff: I have medium length, thick and frizzy hair but my curls never stay in for very long. Is there anything you could recommend to make them last longer?

Stefany 02: I love milana she never dissapoints. Her videos are always very educational and interesting i love how she dresses and does her make up.❤❤

MusicizmahQueenSBed4: Helpful video! Also, i just love you and your energy.

Rachel Green: You look amazing! Please do a clothing haul soon!

Hearts Love: What products did you use before or after? I know you don’t believe on the heat-protectant products. One variable—your hair in the back is longer, so of course they won’t stay as bouncy. But I think we get the idea. It’s crazy that just a few seconds of time can make such a huge difference!

Cortney McKnight: Omg you make curling wands look so easy

Hearts Love: How often do you heat style your hair? I try to heat style mine every other week, once a week at most. I even air dry my hair unless it’s a special occasion.

Tracey Watson: I have wavy fine hair and when I curl it, it can last a week or however long till I wash it. I live in a high humidity city (Brisbane Australia) and find summers to be harder on my hair causing it to frizz if I straighten it, so curling is the best solution for me then. Is there a product that would help to keep out the frizz?

Empress Lilith: My curls always fall after about 15 min BUT last time I did it sprayed the heck out of each strand with Elnet BEFORE and AFTER I curled it and it stayed all day

Lisa Middleton: I have moderate and fine hair. It is colored as well which should actually help a curl to hold in place. Damaged hair usually will hold onto a curl. My hair isn’t damaged in terms that it looks damaged but when you color your hair it’s not virgin hair is what I’m trying to say. But no matter what I’ve tried my hair will not hold a curl. The Curleys usually almost gone by the time I walk out the door after getting ready. I don’t know that I’ve ever tried to hold it on the bell for 30 seconds. That is a really significant period of time. I’m going to try that tomorrow. Crossing my fingers!

mandy wence: I love your hair. It looks heavenly. I wish I could color my hair. But haven't been able to find a stylist good with hair color.

Lynda Joko: Can you do a vlog on products to use to hold waves but isn't too stiff. I have asian hair and am having the worse time with curl fallout. Thank you.

Carla Fitzgerald: I would like you to also list the fingernail polish you wear on your videos. Thanks, love watching you.

Hair Me Rohr: I've been a licensed cosmetologist for 10 + yrs. You should NEVER leave your hair on a hot tool for longer than 15/20 seconds. That's awful on your hair. Curling irons and wands get so hot and can melt off your hair. Remember that girl on Ellen that melted her hair off on a wand? She had her hair on there waaaaaay to long. Also, always use a heat protectant. They do protect your hair against heat up to a certain temperature. I don't care what brand you use and also, if you have chemically treated hair, you need to use it. Always make sure your hot tool isn't too hot also (if it has a temp dial/button) if it doesn't, do not hold it on there longer than 15/20 seconds per strand. The easiest thing to make your curls fall, is if you're curling on freshly washed hair. It's best to curl on 2nd or 3rd day dirty hair for the curls to last longer! Also, if you have fine or thin hair, use a heat protecting hair spray to help them last!

Nancy Tovar: I keep it for 30 seconds and my hair still falls even adding hair spray after do you suggest any products before or after to maintain my curls?

Tracey W: Can you do an updated hair care routine please?

geekista: Brush your hair with your fingers ladies, the brush destroys all the work !

Marge Burkell: Interesting but didn’t really answer the question in your video title. How long it’s on the tool is obviously only one part of the equation. Smaller sections, products etc are all some more variables that will answer it in depth.

Joellen Petty: My hair is long I curl my hair and in five minutes its straight. My hair is natural curly but dry it and curl and in 5 falls completely out

Selina W.: my hair is medium in thickness (i’m asian so you can imagine the texture). my hair will not hold my curls UNLESS i use a really good hair spray. the only one that works for me is from the got2b (yellow can). my curls do not budge at all and lasts all day!

Katerina: this video is lifechanging for me! could you please make the same video? curls with flat iron?

Catherine Britton: I love malibus videos she's lovely :) but think you need product to help it stay in, if your ok with loose curls that's fine but if I curl my hair I like tighter curls :)

Gusto Paleo: Any tips on silk or satin pillow cases? Are they worth it? Can you seek a special offer for us.

EdwinaSY: Is it just me... I think all sides look similar at the post lunch check in haha...

jremediesfrance: I love your watch band! I checked the description box, but you do not have it linked. Where did you purchase it?

Salma Abdelfatah: I would like to see you doing a wig installment video from a well known company ❤

LolliMolly09: Oh man my hair would never last even the 5 hours lol. I'm lucky to get 2 hours

Eleanor Friend: Can you review the power style ceramic attachment?

Karla Fernandez: Milabu what do you prefer 1' or 1 1/4' curling iron?

Tara Tunstall: 34 years old and I just figured out what works to keep my hair curled. I have long wavy thick hair. I found hot sexy hair "support me" and it worked! I use it before i curl with a wand and hairspray after

AndreaRenata Gomez: Your hair it's so long already, and shiny and beautiful, I'm so jealous!!!!

Shirlene Higbie: Great video.... In the comments there where a few who mentioned over night braids ....How do you do that and get the curl higher on your head ... ??? ... I must have missed that video.......Thanks for sharing ...... Hugs ..... Shirlene

Sharon Gambrell: I think it depends on your hair and humidity!

Jessica Wood: I am looking for a new brush. Do you love the tangle teaser one? Can you get tangles out of your hair without ripping your hair out?

Odeleya: Am I the only one that no matter how long my hair is on the iron, the curls won’t even last an hour without completely falling out

Lydia Burton: Where did you get your watch strap?! I'm obsessed!

Ian Nator: do more heatless hair styles

Boel: Hey I would love to se a video on how you clean your hair brushes, like if you have any hacks, tips or tricks

Terri Fromm: Great video.

Yoshi: Mine fall out after 10 minutes.

Missi Harris: I get nervous to hold mine too long it will fry off! I already have damaged bleach hair :(

Skella: I live in the East Coast, my curled hair will stay FOR DAYS. When I go to Los Angeles it doesn't even hold for an hour...I'm so confused by this lol

Tammy Bishop: This is not a true representation. I roll my hair on hot rollers and I still can't get a curl to hold. I gone with no products, products, timing, using my fingers to run through my hair and it just won't hold. Please help if you can.Thank you.

Jumping Gak Flash: I have naturally curly hair, but curling iron curls fall out within a few hours. I have fine textured hair, so maybe that's why? It's really annoying.

Morgan Loyd: What temperature was the wand on? My curls always fall out, but I’m afraid if I hold it any longer my hair will burn

Listen_Darling: If I brush my hair the curls disappear.

Purple Nonsense: but whyyy is the top layer of my hair so straight and then the bottom layer from the nape of my neck just curls itself without anything?

AQ Supergirl: First i have to learn how to curlthen i will do all these techniques

Aleasha Rowe: Humidity plays a major role.

Sam Scott: Am I the only one to let the hair cool in my hand before releasing it??

Delila Farrell: Awesome! Who else loves this channel? Love from a new channel

stass lee: Hi, do you have an uploading schedule anymore? I know it used to be Sunday and Wednesday, but maybe it changed? Thanks!

steffers841: Your also using a large barrel. You would have better results with a 1 inch or smaller...

Ken Leung: 30 seconds making look tighter curls after few days later giving very loose waves! I always stick very low heat on My curling iron, but wand I need little higher !Because heat not get hot from both side with curling wand! Curling iron I keep 270-320f, but wand 290f-320f! I never trying holding more than 15-20second for any curler!

Eva K: if i left the heat on my hair for longer than 10 seconds it will burn right off, my curling wand has no temp setting - just hell-hot

Julie Scott: When I curl my hair my right side falls flat and straight a few hours later, but the left side stays curled ‍♀️

amanda.emily_: Really would love to know your thoughts about L’ange hair styling tools and products etc.. love your videos! Very informational!

joke biesmans: I love you videos. But I like your hair shorter

Hannah Mulvihill: There are different variables that go into why “your” curls fall. It can depend on hair type, density, products, tools, not letting them fully cool before touching them, etc. You gave no real advice on how to make them last.

Drew Ryan: First love your videos

Suzette Smith: I have hard to wave hair.. I'm still stuck with how make them last without a perm

Laura D: Hair type. Type 1 really won’t hold a curl well.

Ruta: It’s just me, but I don’t believe they are curls once you brushed them out I mean you took so long to curl and then you just brushed them out! I was like noooo! personal opinion. I believe the curly curls look gorgeous!

Aakib Kahn: Dear why dont u do hairstyle videos these days

Merry Bourgeoi:

Why not: Please do you have a tut about hair product to style your wavy hair?????

I love u Little mix: i love u but that was not even curled hair honey u lost all curls already when u brushed them off ,u should have let them be just as tight ;( those are waves not curles
