Valerie Fietkau: When I was a child visiting my father in Texas I used to hang out with the girls down the street, they were my two best friends they were sisters and year apart I am white and they are black and my stepmother used to drop me off at the pool all the time and I always beg them to come with me and they always told me no. One day I asked them why and the older one walked over to the oven and picked up this little metal looking comb with a wooden handle and said in ominous tone, this is the comb! I do not like the cone and then she explained to me how it worked. We are all in our 50s now so this was before hair straighteners and they explained to me that every time they got their hair wet they had to use that thing on their hair and it is something I'm assuming you are we younger than me so I'm not sure if you're familiar with it that you stick on the stove and heat up on the stove. I'm sure your family has had horror stories because every black woman my age I have talked to when I mentioned the comb they all get that hateful look on their face, I'm guessing some of them have gotten burned from the thing it is a running joke between me and my friend Rose. One day she had me help her straight her hair cuz her husband was gone and they had absolutely no idea how long something like that took LOL. So when she got married I had found one of those children's comes somewhere, I'm surprised they still make them! And I gave it to her as a gift but I gave it to a privately because it was a inside joke and I didn't want anybody thinking I was a racist LOL anyway she about died and she opened that she's like where in the world did you get this!
