6 Hair Color Rules From A Stylist To The Stars

Nanci, a self-proclaimed Hair Color Diva and celebrity colorist, reveals how to get the color you want without having to make mistakes first.

People change their color according to their mood. That'S why there's so much screwed up color walking around because they've changed their minds. I mean yesterday the girl got broke up with her boyfriend, so she changed her color black because she's, like really mad, and so two days later she finds this really hot surfer. Guy now she wants to be blonde. So love is like nah she's got an orange hair. You can't change your hair color with every guy that you change in your life. It doesn't work that way. I would which is wear a different hat and a lot of people screw up their hair because of that they don't understand the dynamics of hair or hair color. In general, I started coloring hair like really in the 80s, but in the 70s often I got really interested involved with it, but it was the 80s that kind of trial and error period. It was that whole Punk era and that's really what brought color out and then in the 80s color started becoming more popular and people were doing and even guys we're doing it. And now it's like no big deal, the kids color their hair. Oh the biggest problem. It'S not choosing the right color, a and B always choosing a color. That'S too dark in actuality when you're choosing a color at a store. If you're like the common person, you always choose the lighter color, because you can gradually go darker once you go dark. It'S and you cannot go light. Color does not lighten in color there's no way it becomes a whole corrective hair, color situation, and you know it's timely costly and it could damage your hair. This is a correct way of doing a highlight close to the scalp, and then I show you one the wrong way. Okay, that's that's a good way, and it's all about putting it right on that part and then the runway we're just taking it in there, like. Oh yeah, my boyfriend is this and this and this and then they're not looking and then they take the foil and then they do this. You see the difference. You see the placement of the foil. So then you're going to put the bleach right here. So then, what do you get instant roots when a hairdresser does your highlights really quickly and then puts you under the dryer to process you that's like a huge red light right there, if you're, a client in a chair, getting a consultation by a stylist. All of a sudden she's going to take the phone call from her boyfriend watch you smoking a cigarette outside. Then that's the time next into our keynote, to get up and just run, and if the person that you're trying to tell what it is that you want, is not listening and is somewhere else and that's also another kid get up and leave just get up and Walk out say, thank you. It'S not going to work just walk out. I had a lady who had been coloring her hair black, I'm like pitch black and she came in one day. Her eyes were so gorgeous. They were yellow with green and they had like an avocado color ring and that denotes warmth and she had this dark mask on her head and I took a long time, but I took all that stuff out and - and she walked out of there with beautiful, amber Looking highlights, it was beautiful and she was just so happy. I mean words, couldn't even describe how she felt that day. She felt like a million bucks. You

Lisa Miller: As a stylist, color can be tricky and unpredictable. There are many factors that come into play during any color service that effect the outcome; the client's personal hair history (home-care maintenance/previous chemical services), environmental pollutants (mineral and product build-up), medications, hormonal factors, etc.. The key to achieving any desired outcome is utilizing the best professional products available along with technique. Experience is everything (which is why so many salons have a tiered pricing system)! Stylists are human too and sometimes we make mistakes. It sounds like Taryn's stylist got in a bit over her head and tried to make it right but missed the mark. Do not despair, there are ways to undo just about any hair blunder. Seek a manager at the salon (that is usually the most experienced stylist) and calmly ask them to correct your hair. If not, seek help elsewhere; but remember it will be a "corrective color" this time and find a stylist who is experienced with color correction. And be prepared to pay $100+ because while anything is correctable, it's also time consuming and better products/more experience, cost more!  Best of luck :)

MEGSMEGAHITS: I cannot tell you how many times I have asked a stylist to foil my hair so that I do not end up with dark roots and they tell me that you cannot foil hair without dark roots.  Now I can actually SHOW  them THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE!!!!  THANK YOU!!!!

cookiesandcream: I love this woman!  Great personality.  Lots of good advice and interesting conversationalist.

Troy Sherry: I love his video! I am not a real women, but I give this advise to all my friends and family. If your stylist/colorist is not interested in your hair- get out. A stylist that cares about your hair will strive to please and understand your desired hair style.

isa90201: Whether you like it or not, she speaks the truth. I'm a stylist myself, so I can back up what she is saying.

haircolordiva: I like to keep it real and simple! Just like when I do hair color.

Anji Chan: I am a stylist as well and what she is saying is truth. She is putting it in a real world application and trying to help people not ruin their hair. There are a few things that have changed in the industry since she probably started and many manufacturer's of color and lighteners have different processes. For instance at my salon we use CHI color and yes it goes under the dryer but it is also ammonia free and the heat helps the color process. Don't talk down about this woman, watch a dif vid.

Camille Martin: same here I love the way my stylist does my hair and I'm getting it dyed dark auburn this saturday! :)

Simone T: Fantastic advice last foil job was about to get scary I got up & walked away. Colour is hard work & a science in itself.

haircolordiva: @simplycuteaful Congrats!!! you Got and understood my message here. The point is to seek a stylist that really knows hair color. Not a hairstylist who doesn't understand the dynamics of hair color and how it works in realation to your specific hair color situation. Thank you!

haircolordiva: @jim6o don't use color unless you need to. Leave it natural. if you really want to improve the depth and shine use L'oreal Color Gems for men at Sally Beauty Supply. Use Med brown or Light brown. It just adds depth but doesn't lift so you will not be brassy or orange. Don't lighten your hair. It will always look brassy

lovemylogics: Best bleach on the pro market is L'Oreal Platinium Plus (it's also available under the names Redken Blonde Icing & Logics Luminous). It will lift even a natural Level 1 to the pale-yellow (almost white) stage for super pastel toning. The best permanent haircolor on the pro market is Logics Colorcremes. They are 100% Pure-Tone color with Mica-Reflective pigments for the most beautiful, translucent color in the world. Originally invented by Clairol, they're now owned by L'Oreal.

Ariana Dourre: She's being real, and that's actually pretty good.

Los Vlogs de Ana: This is a good advice because i've had a stylist that basically took a call instead of finishing my hair.

haircolordiva: My analogies or painting a story sees to work and in most cases the story has happened to someone. Thanks for tuning in!

Frau Regner: Can I tell my stylist I do not want to be under the dryer while she takes a break? I never knew this was bad for my hair, so I always just accepted it.

Simone T: Nanci I plead of you please bring a training video!! I had my 3 monthly foils new hairdresser simply could NOT get the foils close enough

Siena Vessel: This lady kind of talks and sounds like Cher!  Even looks like her a bit too! Wish her shop was in Colorado we need more Hair Colorists,

Valerie Gerke: Thanks for this..i was on my way to do a cover up color, but now I wont. Maybe just wait a little longer to go get the whole thing..color and highlights

sj1605: I have dark hair that is almost black and I am dark skinned too. I am Indian. I have never colored my hair but want to get some highlights (I think) in my hair. I am not sure if I should use caramel or dark reddish color. Not sure what to do with my hair.

haircolordiva: Loreal makes the best bleach for processing with higher volume developers. It doesn't puff or expand. Not using heat is also a good way to insure your bleach will not bleed out. Heat is not a good source of lifting.

TsDollie: o_o feeds her a taco ^^ Thats what i had for dinner-

Alaina: I will dye my hair as dark as I want!!!

Lindsay Nicole: I'm a stylist and when I finish a foil- i normally put them under the dryer for 10 mins... not to be selfish and take a break but to keep the client's time in mind. If I just let them sit there, they would have to process at least double that time.

haircolordiva: just add the black lowlights once you have achieved the light brown hair, or if you hair is alreay black just add light brown highlights

Copernicia Alba: gorgeous hair. love her too

Kevin Onthank: GREAT ADVICE!

haircolordiva: Thanks Nurse613 for understanding me! nanci the haircolordiva

Kerri Potkonen: I agree ppl change their hair way too often on a whim

jessica knop: LOVE LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!

Arch: u r good.. gr8 advice... just gr8 and true

john george: i totally agree with you.

rtogurl: In my opinion she is telling it like it is. People don't like the truth. She is looking out for the customer, and why not? You pay good money for this service....I don't know about every body else, but if I am paying for hair care...I want hair care! There is nothing wrong with wanting quality for your money.

haircolordiva: @potentual ...You got the message!!!! other people want to be defensive because they are not listening to the point of view. It may be because I am discribing them...

haircolordiva: thanks to all of you that have watched my video... haircolordiva

haircolordiva: @butters174 You are not going to someone who can actually do hair color... there are only ceratin stylist that can actually do color... :) nanci

haircolordiva: @jim6o if you skin is pale and your hair is dark then Red will make you look sickly and light brown will only look orange on you. You are a true Winter... Red is for someone who is an Fall and so is Orange..don't do it! :) nanci

haircolordiva: yea, well my advice has worked for years and people actually learn something. I have a lot to share about hair color so ...whatever

Lulu Aljeryan: REALLY GOOD VIDEO

BreanneMichelle1133: why doesn't anyone like her ? lol she just being honest.

haircolordiva: @Miffny good for you, if I made the differnce to 1 person then I did my job. I am only trying to help the client who is under the hands of a hair stylist who is under experienced...

Quyen Nguyen: wtf, i like her :D

alyssa carmona: i really dislike when stylists push that there is not way for color to lift color because that is incorrect. i may have not been a stylist as long as her, and i would never attempt to lift color with color, because the effects are very faint. maybe a level or two if your lucky. it does adjust , change, and slightly lighten but it doesnt leave it completely the same as it was before the service. again, i would not reccomend it i just feel that it needs to be addressed correctly.tested it in BS.

sirviceman1: teriffic now I dont have to go to the salon anymore thank you )

wildbill6410: @muchobella001 ...not everyone thinks that all hairdressers do is smoke and talk on the phone. That is not the impression I received from watching this video at all. It seemed she was giving out pointers to watch out for, such as the hairdresser being distracted. Many jobs require the worker to pay close attention, some don't. You acknowledged that there are some bad hairdressers out there. Those of us who are not hairdressers need tips on what to watch out for. Have any pointers for me?

Nick H: i am weeping for the hair industry because of people like this. what a joke.

haircolordiva: @miavonni No, you are not listening to this with an open heart... you are taking it the wrong way and you can't see past that.

Matilde Ramos: oh my GOD!! can you help me i want to color my hair light brown and then add black i guess lowligths how would i do that???

haircolordiva: @ThatsSo70s that is why if you notice anyone not listening to you then You have to deciede to not proceed with the service... it is up to you to get out of the chair and just say NO! :0) nanci

haircolordiva: go into blonde... start with highlights...

bellabeautymakeup 35: I need help with haircolor

Rose: Truth hurts !

richmanpoman1: Wiping color off the hair with a towel, tsk tsk very unprofessional. It's 2019!

AGVlogs: I liked the video, don't leave dumb comments talking crap about how she does something wrong and then ask why that was done lol. Products are products .

george benisho: wau i like that

Jayven Jay: she obviously did not went to school for this 1.in the beginning of the video she is using bleach from the box, not the professional one 2.It is true you cant lighten color with color but there is always alternatives like removing the dye 3.Why is she using hairspray or some sort of spray while she is bleaching? She's just wetting it and causing more damage 4.Why is she using a whisk to mix the bleach? You never use any metallic tools with bleach it can cause the bleach to work less effectively.

Melody Starr Widener: Yeah you guys need to stop hating on this lady because I have spent thousands at hair salons my lifetime and I can tell you first handedly that TONS of these stylists out here would leave me under dryers and not return for a long time or would leave me sitting in the chair with the foils and 30 minutes later I am looking around for the stylist wondering where she went. I think it is VERY negligent to start on another clients hair or to go in hiding for a half hour when you have a client!

Michael H: If your stylist takes horizontal sections through the side areas of your highlights you should walk away also. Who is this lady??

hey Fitz: this chick is OBSESSED with boyfriends. super weird. i'd like to know which "celebrities" she does. lol.

Nicolerulezlife: @wildbill6410 we'll mine talks to her salon friend while doing my hair very annyoying!

GGirll22: she sounds love sick

John: This video is a joke. It actually shows you the wrong way to highlight hair, and edits out the proper way..WTF? Come on people!!

listentothis: don't highlight your hair yourself. all over home dies are OK but DIY highlights are completely no... you will not get a natural look without foiling and as your hair is so dark any blonde lightener will make your hair orange so you'll need a toner. go to a professional.
