Hey guys welcome back to my channel, my name is shannon and i am a hair blogger, slash business owner of the business, oh so curly and i also share a lot of business tips on this channel. So if you are interested in learning more about running a small business girl, boss content and then every single sunday, we do a curly hair video on this channel. Hence why today's video is going to be all about styling tips for natural curly hair, it's a sunday. It is wash day i've just freshly washed, my hair, it's currently drying, but it's fully styled. Let'S just get straight into the five top tips for styling natural curly, hair, so tip number one is to deep condition your hair. Every week now i say every week because i do recommend that those with curly hair actually shampoo their hair every single week. Now it may be different for you. I know with my scalp. It gets very irritated and i get a lot of product build up throughout the week, so i need to wash my hair every single week. So whenever you do choose to shampoo your hair, i'm not on about co-washing i'm on about when you actually cleanse your hair, you are going to want a deep condition, i'm totally against actually shampooing your hair and washing your hair without deep conditioning. If you skip that deep condition process, please do not complain to me that your hair is dry. Your hair isn't defined. It isn't soft, because deep conditioning adds all of those special touches to your hair. When you add that into your wash day routine, the deep conditioning is a must and something that has completely transformed my hair. When i was younger, i only ever got my hair treated, slash deep conditioned when i was in the hairdressers, and that would be every maybe six months so only twice a year. I would actually deep condition and treat my hair, which, for those with curly hair, that's actually so bad and no wonder my hair was so dry and no wonder it was so damaged. So especially if you do have coloured hair or heat damage, or any kind of over protein hair you're going to want to really make sure that you are moisturizing. Your curls and deep conditioning helps with that. A bonus tip for deep conditioning weekly is to add in some kind of thermal heat or just use like a layer of shower caps, a layer of bonnets i like to use a shower cap and then a bonnet on top of my shower cap, and it becomes Like a greenhouse for your hair - and this really helps for your deep conditioner to actually penetrate into the hair, those with low porosity like me, we will get into porosity later on in this video but loads of low porosity hair. Like me, they find it very hard for product to get into your hair. As you can see, a lot of the product that i have applied on my curls after washing is actually just sitting on top of my hair, and it takes quite a long time for it to soak into the hair. And that's because of my actual cuticles are very tight together, whereas if you apply heat, it slowly starts to open up the cuticle similar to how heat and steam actually opens up the pores on your skin, so that allows the product to seep into the hair. More so you want to make sure that you add some kind of heat. There are loads of products on the market, thermal heat caps that you can place in the microwave, some that warm up on themselves, and you can also just do it. The diy way, where you put multiple shower caps on your hair or get yourself an oso, curly bonnet, and you can put the bonnet on top of your shower cap or plastic bag. It really doesn't matter which one now my second and i should have put this first, because it is the most important curly hair tip that i tell everyone crazy enough. It isn't really known for those who are new to the curly hair tips and the curly hair space, and a lot of us grew up without doing this. I know i did i would actually apply. I have to laugh because of just such the huge difference. This one little change makes in your hair routine, but i actually used to apply a product to my hair when it was dry for one and i would just apply the product like boom boom. The product is only going on the top layer of my hair. It isn't reaching inside every single strand of my curls, which i have thick hair, so you can imagine that the inside was dry and matted. And next, when you apply product to your hair, when it's dry, it's not really getting the same effect than when your hair is wet and you apply product. I don't fully know the scientific reason as to this, but i know that it works. It'S tried and tested, and just take my word for it. It actually works for me with low porosity curls. I find that i get the best results when my hair is dripping wet or soaking wet in the shower, but obviously, if you can't do it that way, you can do it while your hair is damp or you can grab a spray bottle and while your hair Is drying throughout the product process? You can just keep spraying the hair to make sure it's damp, and i find that look. You can see here now that i've applied product, while my hair was wet it's starting to look way more defined than if i was to just apply it straight to dry, hair applying product. While your hair is wet, my next tip and i'm gon na add it into this tip because it's kind of similar and it works together. Well, so this is actually applying product to your hair while it's damp or wet, but in sections this is a game changer guys. Honestly, it's gon na change the game for you. I like to section my hair in four, so one two, three four, you can section your hair even more than that. I'M just so like i was gon na, say skilled, that's kind of like two in my own horn, but i have a lot of years of experience of doing my hair, so i can get through it really quickly now, but in the beginning i would section my Hair into maybe even four on one side, four on the other, and that is when you want to go in with your hair product and you want to really go through every single strand. So if you look at my hair, you can see that every single part of my hair is moisturized and it's starting to define and that's because i actually sectioned my hair and i applied the product section by section. You don't want to leave any part of your hair untouched because that's going to cause a lot of dryness and frizz and you'll notice that the outside of your hair will look good. But it will start to expand because this part is really dry and matted. And just frizzy, and it's going to you know, make the whole aesthetic of your curls just not look right so make sure that you are applying product and layering in sections. My third tip is actually to find out what your hair's porosity level is. If you are new to the word, porosity porosity is basically it's a way of identifying how your hair reacts to water. Now, with me with low porosity, water tends to sit on top of my hair, so you will find that it takes a while for your hair to get wet, and that sounds crazy. But if you are in the shower, you will find sometimes that it takes such a long time for your hair to like wet all the way through. The water will just drop on top fall down drop on top and then you'll have to really really soak it. For the whole part of your hair inside and out to get wet, you will find that i use a spray bottle a lot, because my hair dries really quickly as well, while i'm styling so to keep it wet and to get the best effect. I use the spray bottle to keep going while my hair is outside of the shower, so to find out whether you have low medium or high porosity level hair. You have to do a porosity test. You simply take a strand of hair freshly washed no product applied, and you want to take that strand out of your head and then you want to put it into a glass of water. Now you'll be able to tell whether you have low porosity, medium or high. Just from how the hair strand reacts to the water, if it is floating on top of the water, it is low porosity. If it is down at the bottom, it is high porosity and then, if it's in the middle, it is medium, definitely check that out and what that's going to tell you is how your hair reacts to water and what types of products are going to work. Well for you! So when you are a complete beginner to curly hair care, finding out your porosity should be your first thing to do, because it will help you to identify what products may work for your hair and you can go through those instead of wasting your time going through. Every single curly hair product on the market and having a lot of trial and error, you can simply go directly to the ones that work for your hair porosity. Now. My fourth styling tip is identifying what kind of curls you want to have so the way you decide to detangle your curls can actually affect the look of your curls once it is dry. I like to finger detangle, and that leaves me with a very natural look. As you can see, i don't mind a bit of frizz when it dries. I like the natural look. This is my natural curl pattern. I'Ve grown to love my hair. It has got better over the years, thanks to me learning how to look after it, but i don't feel the need to manipulate my curl pattern as much as i did before. Now. If you want to change your curl pattern, there are different techniques you can use. So there is the technique where you use a denman brush and that kind of brush actually clumps your curls together. So if you prefer the more clumped together look when your hair is dry, you can use a denman brush. You also can use the finger curl method where you use your fingers to detangle, but then you go in section by section and you actually twist your hair with your finger and it creates this kind of like shirley temple cows like a little coily curl section by Section and when it dries, it looks really really cute and nice, but it's just a different curl pattern to what you have here. Definitely try out different detangling methods and see what you like. Everyone is different. Obviously, you're gon na have your preference, but another thing i want to mention when it comes to the topic of detangling is to detangle, while your hair is wet. Please please, if you don't take anything from this video, please take down this tip and save yourself and your hair heartbreak by detangling your hair. While it is wet when your hair is dry, it's just it's pointless, trying to detangle you're gon na cause so much breakage. It'S gon na be hard on your fingers hard on your comb on your brush, because your hair just isn't in the state that it needs to be to make detangling easier when your hair is wet and if you want to add some kind of conditioner. I recommend a very cheap conditioner, like the tresemme naturals, one that everyone recommended back in the day, because that is really cheap. So you don't mind using a lot of it just to detangle with and then you're going to rinse it out anyway, so definitely grab a conditioner or just really wet your hair and section your hair and detangle in sections, while it's wet from the bottom upwards. That'S another key point: if you go from the roots down, you are going to cause so much breakage and it's going to be way harder to detangle, whereas if you go section by section and go from the bottom bit by bit until your brush or your comb Or your fingers can go through the whole hair with no blockages. That'S when your hair is fully detangled. It may take a longer time but, like i said earlier, once you get used to the routine you'll be able to zoom through it real real quick. Now, my fifth tip is a bunch of curly hair hacks. These are things that i've learned over the years that really help with certain hairstyles. I have been loving this sleek middle part in bun that i could just never do when i was younger. My hair was just so thick and out of like it, wouldn't even sleek and be neat and tidy, whereas now i got the perfect formula for it. So i love to do this like kim k, sleek. Look, it just makes me look a bit more mature and when i go out sometimes i like to have that look. I don't know why. I just like to switch things up, but a thing that i have learned over time to make my sleek bun even easier to go quicker and just get it done is midweek or a few days after wash day, i will do a braid out, so i will Do one braid here one braid here, one braid here one braid here and i will sleep with my hair in the braids and wake up, maybe the next day or the day after and take the braids down. Now this really stretches your hair. I do have a bunch of videos on my channel covering the braid out and on my instagram page, but it actually stretches your curls if you are looking for a more wavy look, the kind of like crimped or straightened and curled look without any heat, definitely test Out a braid out or a twist out so once my hair is stretched, it makes it so much easier to actually brush back i'll use my braid out and then what i will do is. I will put it in part it in the middle and then sleek. It back into a ponytail, i can leave it in a ponytail and it won't shrink up because the hair is stretched, or it's just really easy to compart to put into a bun, because it is stretched. That'S a really good hack for those who like to do. The sleek back styles, but you may find it a bit hard because you have quite thick hair. Those are my top curly hair, styling tips. I hope you found them really helpful. If you have any questions about curly hair, please do leave them down below and i will catch you next week next sunday, next wash day for my next curly hair video bye,
