Hair Stylist Didn'T Want To Do My Hair...

Hey GEMs!

Ready for storytime? Today's story is about the time I went on set for a modeling gig only to realize the hairstylist didn't want to do my hair. She wouldn't come near it and was clearly upset at the thought of having to touch my natural hair. SMH. At first, it seemed innocent enough, but as the story goes on further it becomes pretty obvious what the deal was. :/

Today'S story starts off innocently enough i'll admit, but, as time goes by, you will see that it becomes very apparent what is actually going on behind the scenes, but before we get into that, if you are new to this channel, my name is jillian. Welcome. Welcome and here at this channel i do a plethora of different things. I do story based content surrounding hair and i also ask my subscribers to head over to my instagram and dm me any questions that they may have about their natural hair care, and i will answer it in a video. So there is something for everybody at this channel, so if that is something that you are into be sure to subscribe, hit, the notification bell hit the like button, all those annoying things that youtubers ask i'm doing it right now, but without further ado we are jumping Into the story, let's go so, as i mentioned before, i do have work as an actress, i've kind of sort of modeled, but i'm barely five feet tall. So i don't really model. I get an email from my agent saying that i booked the job, so i was kind of excited knew that it was print work for a local hotel and they were very specific. They were very clear and said that they are only going to be filming. Just my eyes, so this little rectangle of my eyes and i'll explain further exactly what that consisted of in just a moment. So i took that information and i said okay, if it's just going to be my eyes, then i don't know if my hair needs to be done, they weren't very specific about that. They didn't even mention it, but considering hey all we're going to shoot is your eyes, i'm thinking. Okay, i might not need to worry too much about my hair, but how things work in this business is sometimes they will tell you one thing and by the time you get from your trailer to on set, it has changed. So i figured okay. I might not need to show my hair, so what i'm gon na do is just wear it in twist, so i am able to keep my hair in a protective style, which is what i wanted to do, but also if it needs to be taken down. I can just take the twist down within five minutes no problem. My call time was at 3 p.m. That day, which is typically a little bit later, but i figured like hey. Maybe i was maybe one of the last models to come in um, so i didn't really think too much of it. So i walk in and i can't remember if i was greeted right away or not, but i ended up. I just remembered that i was given a sheet of paper to fill out. I filled that out and then i just patiently waited after some time goes by um. Another woman comes out and she doesn't really speak to me. She kind of gives me a you know a side eye like i wasn't supposed to be there, but she doesn't really say anything, but she is talking to all the other girls, so i just assumed that she was part of the crew and before you ask yes, Yes, she was so after some time goes by. I can see she's kind of you know her eyes are kind of looking at the girls and kind of looking back at me and looking at the girls and looking back at me, uh. But i didn't really say anything because i'm just one of them: people i'm just like what's up hello and then she walked past me and she did that thing that people do where they think they're being inconspicuous, but they're being really obvious. So she walked by, and i could tell that she was trying to look at the form that i had filled out and she did one of those really awkward like obvious things, y'all know what i'm talking about. Once again, i didn't really say anything uh. She didn't speak to me, i didn't know who she was. She obviously didn't know who i was, but not really a big deal. So more time goes by and finally she comes up to me and the conversation goes a little bit like this hi um. Who are you? Oh hi? My name is jillian mitchell. I'M one of the models. Oh that's interesting because i thought all the models were already here. Oh okay, well, yeah! Well, my call time was at 3 p.m. So i'm here, okay, weird right but whatever so. I didn't take anything by it. I don't even think she gave me her name. I don't even think she introduced herself because usually that's the thing you know i was like. Oh hey, i'm the makeup artist. Oh, hey, i'm the director, oh hey, i'm the pa or whatever, but you know she, i don't. I don't think she even said who she was to me. She just wanted to know who i was, which once again whatever so after some more time goes by. I realize who she is: she was doing other girls hair flat ironing their hair curling, their hair, all that good stuff. So i was like oh she's, the hair, lady cool, so less than 10 minutes later goes by and this woman comes up to me. I kid you not just like this, so what are you gon na do to your hair? The hair lady just asked me what i'm going to do to my hair. Now, of course, a part of me was just like okay. Let me not let me not be defensive, because some people just speak like that. Some people are abrasive. You know that happens whatever, and there was a very there's there's a key moment. That'S going to happen. A little later in the story that lets me know that that was not the case, but just just stick with me here. So at this point i was just kind of like i can just take these twists down. I knew it wasn't a big deal, but you know her demeanor. She was just kind of like okay and walked away once again, i'm like okay, you know i didn't take the fence to it or anything like that. Just thought. It was a little weird that the hair lady asked me what i was going to do with my hair but whatever, but when you think about it, like i said before, she was flat ironing all these other girls hair, putting spiral curls doing all this stuff spraying A bunch of whatever, so you would think that that you should have the equipment to do whatever you needed to do to my hair, but whatever, who knows? Maybe she just didn't know how to do black hair, or maybe she didn't want to deal with. You know having a fight with me if she wanted to straighten it because we would have had to square up. I don't know i don't care, but the attitude was uncalled for. However, you cut it so i go in the bathroom. Take my twists down and everything's. Fine at that time, in my life, my twist outs used to be bomb. Okay, i will show you a picture of me and full makeup. Before my hair started going haywire, i started losing my hair, my my twist outs used to be bomb, but what happened? Next? Let me know exactly what she was thinking. What made it funny was as soon as she saw me, she did a complete 180., oh hi sweetheart, oh hi, honey, okay, sweetie, so we're gon na do this. I was all types of sweetie pies and sugar bits and all this other stuff - and i was just like - oh cause - you had a full-on attitude less than 20 minutes ago, but okay, the fact that she did such a 180 when she saw that she was not Going to have to touch my hair, which she did not the entire time she was just the nicest person ever so that that that that answered. My question was like okay, you had an issue with doing my hair to be fair, to be fair here, i'm trying to be as objective as possible when i tell these stories because um i feel like she might have been a little overwhelmed, but she seemed to Be doing just fine with all the other girls hair and then i come in and she clearly doesn't know what to do with black hair, so she's just freaking out you know granted. I do think that that is the wackiest thing ever that hair stylists don't know what to do with black hair and a black woman walks in with twists in their hair, and you freak out. What are you gon na? Do that's problem? That'S a problem! At the end of the day, it's an issue, but you know just trying to just trying to be fair, because i can only imagine this lady is not here to defend herself, but still we all know. We all know what that is, uh, so just had to put that out there just saying, but at the end of the day i have very little sympathy for this person just because you should know how to do everybody's hair, and hopefully that is changing. You know in um what is it cosmetology school? I don't know hair school, that's not the right term whatever, but hopefully that's changing to where uh more students are learning how to work with black hair, because i think instances like this is trash. I said it. It'S trash. This should not be happening granted. I'M glad that i was prepared, so i was able to alleviate any of the issues, but at the end of the day, like god forbid, if my hair wasn't in um, it wasn't set in that style, and there was nothing that i could do with it like. What would we have done if i was just like? I don't know, you're the hair lady? Why don't you do my hair lord? I don't even want to know what would have happened to my hair for no reason cause. You didn't see it in the damn just made me cuss. The irony of the entire thing was once i finally got onto set and finally filmed my aspect of uh the the project they literally hooked me up to like it almost looked like those old school binoculars. You know like back in the day where kids would take like a box, and it would be like a big long. Rectangle thing. It was literally like that all you saw was right here, so we did all that and i didn't even need to take my hair down, but at the end of the day my hair was cute. My makeup was kind of cute too. I was a peacock that day i was a peacock okay, whatever, so, if you were ever in las vegas around 2000, when was this 2015, maybe 2016, and if you ever crossed the cosmopolitan hotel - and you saw some eyes with some peacock makeup, looking back and forth, It was your girl, here's your girl. Have you heard about the story where my natural hair sent me to the er yeah? It'S it's it. It is as ridiculous as it sounds. It'S a good story, but bruh check it out. You

Kētta’s Coils: To be honest, I’m not surprised….. some of the educators in the cosmetology school I graduated from used to come ask me questions about my hair. I helped students do clients also to prevent them from damaging their hair. But the rudeness shown towards you was uncalled for. Just admit that you’ve never done that texture of hair before and maybe try and learn…. ‍♀️. It adds to your portfolio and gets you more clients. IJS

winter is here: The irony of it all is that they hire black models so they can show "diversity" but then the people they hire to embellish these models know nothing more than white people's hair and makeup... and this lady was low key racist. She could have just sprayed your hair like if she was doing something, if she actually tried to do something... even a meeehhh something and could have gone about her day... but noooo... she had to make you uncomfortable about your hair. How dare you show up to a shoot were she's in charge for the model's hair and you don't have straight hair? God help me but I would have confronted her.

J C: Stories like these are all too common for us. I’m sorry you had to go through that experience. I’m hoping that some form of action was taken to expose the problem to whoever the hiring manager or director was. We can’t keep allowing these microagressions and implicit biases to continue to fester in the workplace environment. I feel as though us being “objective” and not speaking up only makes matters worse. It creates psychological and emotional stress for the victim and that hairstylist needs to know that her behavior was not okay. Great topic for discussion.. Love your channel and your content sis!!

Josh Hughes: You must’ve had the patience of Job that day Jill lol very emotionally mature. Always praying for you and your family

Kristafa Woodberry: I do hair and I went to cosmetology school and they really don't teach nothing about our hair everything I learned I learned it at home. The crazy part is if there was a black hairdresser that didn't know how to do white hair they would flip out and have a fit. We have so much to deal with.

Quirky T: I will never understand how professional industries book hairstylist and MUA's that can't do every hair texture and skin tone. That should be a national standard requirement.

jennifer haggard: I just have to say, I love these story time videos just as much as your skits! ❤️ I am sorry that happened to you. Unfortunately, I have been to a salon or two growing up where the hair stylist had no idea what to do with my hair.

Chinenye Joy: I am in Nigeria so we never get this particular kind of event but natural hair is still kind of an issue in some work place and like you said it's trash. Love you girl ❤️

Pamela Davis: First of all, your hair is still the bomb! Love the wash and go you are sporting in this video! Secondly, I'm not sorry that you had to go through this and no disrespect to everyone that made that comment. This hairdresser (hair lady) not only showed how ignorant she was, but her arrogance in putting on you the responsibility of her job unfortunately is not uncommon. The minority (not you) doesn't know how to handle the majority (that's us)that makes lots of money for large corporations within the Black hair care industry! You didn't lose focus as to why you were there and persevered to complete your assignment. There is a lesson in this for all of us...and we all know what I mean! Your handling of this situation is part of "the ongoing talk" that our young people will have with their families! It's a skin toughener...and we keep it moving! Great story, thanks for sharing!

Chantel Wensley: Yup this is the everyday....good job speaking up queen. Sidenote Ive lost my hair completely for the third time in my life it's devastating...I have to do yet another big chop cause I'm having out with about 15 percent of my hair. I have 4a/4b ...soft as a bunny, fiiiine hair. So I've always treated it with delicacy as an adult and once I learned what was happening anyways, I think I have hair issues due to health stuff...I'll have to dive in deep into your channel, maybe I'll find something that can help me.nive been wearing wigs for the last two years and I just can't do it anymore. I look awful with short hair as well....so that doesn't help anything haha

Quantavia Morgan: You do so good when people are rude because clearly I would have flipped

Apara: People make it seems like black hair is this mythical hellish mess to do...it's really no harder than any other curly type. A good conditioner, some water, wide tooth comb and patience, and you fine with detangling. Styling is easy because out hair naturally molds easily due to its shrinkage and coils. No need for hairspray to make it stay like straight hair.

Phathi's Creations : Girl... I love your stories. I laughed the entire video

Gayle Brown: Jillian, you handled yourself very well. I enjoyed this

MzAmie1127: Thank you for sharing this experience. I have experienced this so many times and did not always respond with your finesse and objectivity.

Johanna Earthly Ramos: Oooh girl!! You’ve got all of your big sisters in here with major side eye through this story . You’re certainly the professional one. If only you could’ve heard my responses to that “hairdresser”. And you’re so BEAUTIFUL!

Kelsey T: When I went to cosmetology school they taught us nothing about our curly, coily hair and I went to a black owned cosmetology school. They had to follow that book to a t. I do hope that is changing now that more women are rocking their natural hair.

S Maxwell: Wow unbelievable! So you your profession is doing hair but yet you can’t do “all” hair types especially in that industry! I think you handled that situation EXTREMELY well..

Myrna Andre: I was relaxed, working in DC and made my way to a salon for a short haircut...speaking French, 15minutes as the 2 owners were talking about me. Once done, I told them that I understood everything they said that I was leaving as obviously they were not OK doing my hair...yeah I am fluent in French. They apologized profusely and did my hair for free. Ignorance!

Pink Lobelia: It’s funny watching you reenact your experience but I know it wasn’t funny in the moment. I had a bad experience with people who have no experience doing my hair (told me to relax and had two stylists flat iron due to their poor planning). Never again.

Yaya’s Living: You are a great story teller!

Yahel Israel: Ohhhhh shit I'm first. I love your channel. Fuck giving her any benefit of the doubt or being Fair. Her attitude was never fair towards you. Her attitude told her true feelings. And the sad part about this is that you have BLACK WOMEN who don't like to do natural hair

Kay: You're hair looks amazing! Karen should have kept it moving

Improve my pronunciation: I’m loving your videos. storytelling and skits, man!

ODEAN LAWRENCE: You know what...I'm just pissed right now! First of all, where does she get off speaking to you like that! You know what, if she had asked me, "What are you going to do with your hair?" I would've replied, "Well, what did those girls, over there, SAY THEY were going to do with THEIR HAIR???" Followed by, (because I just LOVE calling people out ) "Look, if you don't have the 'SKILLS' to do my hair type, you should just say so instead of feeling you've been put in an awkward and uncomfortable situation...i can do my own hair so just chill! Me on the outside Me on the inside And second of all, IF YOU ARE GOING TO CALL YOURSELF A HAIRDRESSER, THEN STAND-IN-IT AND TRAIN TO DO ALL HAIR TYPES!! THAT IS WHAT I THINK A REAL PROFESSIONAL WOULD WANT TO DO!!! BECOME BETTER AT YOUR CRAFT!! TRAIN TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE ALL HAIR TYPES...THAT'S IF YOU REALLY WANT TO MAKE YOUR MONEY, YOU LAZY ASS PREJUDICE B****! And Jill...I commend you for holding it down and showing some class, but I still say you should've let her have it! Well in my head I say that because ultimately, I wanna do my job, get my coins and leave!

Unlike No Other: It's a good thing she didn't actually get a chance to touch your hair/head with her funky energy. We don't want any neg transferences anyway.

Minimal: You are a good story teller this is horrible.. The people who casted you should have hooked you up with someone who can style natural hair. The twist out is popping. All those micro aggressions for nothing huh

Melisha Weston: Congrats for booking the part!

Sable 711: I hope that they're teaching student cosmetologist how to do all types of hair now! I used to frequent the beauty school and I used to try and get my hair done at the mall and the white cosmetologist had a little black lady in the back that they would bring out whenever somebody black came in. I was perturbed because I specifically asked if one of them could do my hair. It's a shame your beautiful twist out wasn't shown in the picture

Sandy B: Oooh bless you for not going off! She was very unprofessional and should not have been on any set if she's that limited in her "skills". Did you at least give her the looks that you gave in this vlog?

Jamaican Beauty: Man listen! It's a shame for a person to be a hair stylist on a set and can't do BW hair, she should have been ashamed of herself

Beatrice Dillon: WOW!!! Are we still going through the regarding our hair? Mmmm, Lord please bless them.

Ash Smith: 2:37 thank you for answering my question before i asked

jmadtoyou: late to this, but, yeah...keep your head. continue to move forward gem

Movie Man Greg: Aye, just in the intro, but your hair looks great

awujoola robin: I KNEW I was a subby!! GEM CYN Collab for the culture!!

Pamela Frank: NM the hair issue (which is unacceptable), but let's talk about basic courtesy & respect: this broad came up to you & just demanded information from you without identifying herself at all!??!?!!!?? Not only that, why would you know what NEEDED to be done; having just arrived & without a briefing, how could you be expected to know what the shoot needed from you - that's what the hair & makeup artists are supposed to know & make happen - am I mistaken?!?!??!!! NOT OK. Then instead of leaving well enough alone, they lead you to believe your hair needed to be loose when it didn't, it could have remained pulled back - REALLY?!!!?! Oh hell no. You are better than me, I need to take notes from you on patience and grace, because I don't know that I can say I would have handled it as gracefully as you did. That we have to endure such treatment is just....

Trice G: She was too rude

Theresa Ragland: Hi GEM Natural because twins have to much hair for her beautiful Queen's

Tracy: She probably would of slick it into a bun. If she could manage doing the slick.

vicky fox: 2:29 if you know, you know

Eve Favorse: It’s sad people are ignorant of their narrow-mindedness!

Movie Man Greg: You slick with the little trash pop up lmfao

9 Kids: Unless she did and didn’t want to, people,

vonnie B: Oh wow amazing, I saw those

Kētta’s Coils: Good morning, dear heart.

shanikia ervin: Hey J

Tees Napz: Wooow!!!

Valerie Yates: Wow. Not surprised.
