Welcome back to my channel, my name is samyu and for today's video i want to talk about protective styles as it relates to relaxed hair. Is it that we can use the same traditional protective style that we use for natural hair when it comes to our relaxed hair, and i want to share with you some of the measurements and regimens that i use to protect my ends from shedding and breakage. If this is something that you are interested in, please consider to subscribe to my channel leave a like on this video and comment down below - let's jump right into the video, so let's get into what is protective style. So protective styles are any hairstyles that you do to protect your hair from stressors and that in the sense means that, when it comes to like your comb, your brushes, your hair accessories heat um, the over manipulation of the hair. So you put your hair in a specific hairstyle that tucks away your ends and that you have a low manipulation. Some of the popular protective styles are like braids, whether box braids cornrows anything. So you put your hair up in a bun anything that tucks away your ends. So with protective styles, when you keep your ends tucked away, it helps to retain length or to prevent breakage. So you do grow hair every month right, but if you are experiencing shedding and breakage, you won't see that length acquisition. You won't get that length acquisition because your ends are keep on breaking, so you will never experience growth and length retention. Also. So whenever you tuck your ends, whenever you grow new growth, you will see the difference because your ends are also healthy. So a lot of protective styles are out there for natural hair that i do love in particular box braids, but they want to be like a type of braid in our feeding cornrow. I do love those the faux locses are my favorite also, and the thing is that with those type of hairstyles and even sewings too, because these hairstyles are not really meant for relaxed hair, and it's just so unfortunate because i do love these protective styles and i Do like a change. The thing is that our hair is not as strong as it is once it was, so we can't get away with wearing specific styles like these, because we will end up damaging our hair so because we relax our hair. The bonds in our hair are not as strong as they used to be, so the elasticity in our hair is not what it used to be. It'S not as strong as it once was, so we end up damaging our hair. We ripped out our hair, especially if we just got a fresh perm, so i tend to stay away from braiding my hair, i used to braid my hair when i was relaxed and trust me. The closest i'm getting to a bmw convertible is by braiding my hair, because my edges will start right here. Okay, i will have no edges here. My edges would be way back here, so i realized that box braids are not for me. Even the texture of the weave rubbing is so dry and coarse. It'S rubbing on your relax here, so i did not like that, but i would try to see if i could find some remedies to help alleviate that, but yeah it's whatever. I can probably just buy a braided wig or something and try to find a good way how to install it. So i can have that feeling. I would like to see it even some tight tension. Cornrows are not for me too, because it just rips my hair out. I do love these hairstyles, though i think they're super cute, and it's just so unfortunate, so i may have to research and see if there are methods out there that i can get away with wearing these hairstyles, because i think they're super cute and i do miss Some box braids, even when it comes to cornrows, for like my sewing, i asked my friend that you know she does relax here for a long time, and i asked her as a stylist that can i wear sewings and she said that not when i have a Fresh relaxer, she thinks it's best for me to do it whenever say four weeks after i relax my hair, i can try to get one, but not while it's fresh, because she said, if i have a bit more of a new growth, it can help to lessen The effects of putting my hair and breaking off my relaxed hair, but in that sense too, i'm still a bit apprehensive about it because with those new growths too - and you know, your relaxer is hanging out for your life, i think it can probably pull them out Too so i may have to look into properly oiling them and see if that could work, but even like the threads and stuff going through your hair. I think those are not good, like it just rips through your hair. So i don't know if you can oil the threads i don't know like. I need to figure it out, because i love sewing so much i'm gon na. Do it because i do love it, but i would try to probably not do it as frequent as possible. So that i don't disrupt my hair, also um, i could probably look into using, like you parts with the clippings, but not to do it as often because i don't want to stress my leave outs too and constantly flat ironing or putting heat to your hair, so That your hair can blend in with your u-part, wigs and stuff like that, so i will just use it probably like once a month or something like that, but not too often and when it comes to clippings extensions, i love clippings. I love me some clipping extension and my friend said to me: oh i see you do love these clippings. Just make sure that you don't use them too. Whenever you are freshly relaxed, so use it about four weeks in as well, so that your hair has a little bit more grip on the roots, so that the pressure is not too much strain on you. Your freshly relaxed hair, so four weeks in sounds good that i can put in my clippings because i do love me some good clippings and what i try to do is not to sleep in them, because i don't want the friction. So i try not to be lazy and not sleep in them, so every time i come in, i would just take them off and give my my roots a little relief, so i tend not to sleep in them at all. Absolutely not so. Those are some of the styles that i try to stay away from, and it's just unfortunate because i do really love how beautiful they are so for me not to be able to wear them. It'S a little bit. You know sad, it's really sad, but i do love my hair and do love my edges just so. I'M trying to grow my hair out as much as possible as much as i can so um when it comes to say putting my hair in a nice high top bun. The friction of having your hair so tightly pulled together too, can cause havoc on my edges. Challenge have any okay, so i'm trying to have lent acquisition and retention too when it comes to my leave outs when it comes to my edges, because i can't break them off so having that constant friction in the top of my head pulling my hair backward and Upwards, i don't like that and even using these edge control too they're so drying that causes your hair to be so dry and brilliant crips. So i don't really like it, and even if i do use it, i try to have like a wet towel or something just to wipe it out before i go in with my serum to comb my hair out, but i really do not like edge control like That i try to minimize how much i use it, because i know that it can wreak havoc on my edges, so i try to stay away from that anything that is too tight and cause friction on my hair. I don't want anything to do with it, because i'm really trying to preserve my relaxed hair. Everyone is different, and it's up to you. You can definitely tell me down below um any protective styles that you use, that other natural hair girls use. That you think, is beneficial to your hair and some of the methods that you use to alleviate or not cause any breakage to your hair, because i really like to switch things up sometimes um i mean i can do things, but do it in moderation, except for The box braids and the cornrows and stuff i do like my wigs - i don't use any glue. I just stick to the my got to be gel and just put on my forehead and put on my wigs, and i can just slip it off whenever i'm ready to go to bed at night. But the thing is that sometimes you get tired of it and you just want something different, but i do love my wigs and what i do. I don't even conroll my hair down. I just part my hair in the center like this and just flick it back and tuck my ends under and then apply my wigs and i find out that it's still as flat as me doing my cornrows. If i do it to the side it's more bumpy, if i stick it down in the middle and just slick it down with my brush, it looks exactly flat and put on my wig cap, so i found a solution to that that i don't have to control My hair, especially if i just got a fresh relaxer - i really don't, because your hair is a little more sleek and more straight, so the roots won't be as bumpy. So that's what i do to eliminate cornrow my hair to get that flat. Look in my opinion, however, what i do for in terms of protective style, to protect my ends is that if i'm home, i put my hair up into a bun that it's not rubbing on my shoulders like this or on my clothes, i will put my hair In a low button top my ends under, if i'm not yet ready for bed like to do my whole wrapping routine, i was just laying my silk or my satin scarf on my pillow and you know can lay down. So i have less friction going on. I feel more at ease doing that, even though i'm not sleeping and my head is still rubbing on something, so i just put that on my pillow or even the back of my couch to you know to rest my head back, so i have less friction. If i'm traveling, that's what i do to put my hair up into a bun or i just have a simple cup of my hair, this is a perfect time for you to wear your bun on the plane, so you have less friction when it comes to your Hair so always try to have preventative measures too, whenever you're traveling, because sometimes you know you may fall asleep on the plane and your hair is constantly rubbing in the back of the seat. So the less friction the better for you. I always try as a preventative measure, to take emphasis on my ends by moisturizing them and getting a frequent trim. I am not scared. I used to be a little bit scared about trimming my hair, because i'm like, why is it that i'm constantly cutting? Is it going to grow, but it actually helps? I try to get a trim as needed, but every two months, so, even if it's just a little bit of manicure the ends a little bit, i try to maintain my ends that really helps to prevent your hair from really breaking and shining try to keep up With your ends so always make sure to moisturize wash your hair every week. Do your deep conditioning treatment also do your protein treatment every month and your ends will love you for that, and what i do too with is. When i'm going to sleep, i make sure to wrap my hair every night, no matter how tired, i am, i've, never went to bed in a long time since i really took up this into hand since i've really started to place emphasis on my relaxer. It'S been six months now that my hair is actually doing very well, since i'm trying to do these new, routine and regiments. I took my hair away every single night, so it becomes like a lifestyle habit, so just try to create a lifestyle venture for yourself where every single night, no matter how tired you are don't find any excuse, spend an extra five minutes to tuck your hair away. Put your hair up in a nice wrap and put on your silk scarf or and you're also abundant to top it off. So that's what i do and that will help to protect your ends as well, and what i do for like the winter time too. I always make sure that i tuck my hair away, so if i'm going out and it's super cold, i don't wear my hair out. I just put my hair into a low butt, as i said before, and just put on a nice wig and that's what i do to protect my hair from the cold weather. So there are numerous things that you can do that can help to prevent breakage. For your hair that you don't have to go into the protective natural hair route, because it's it's not really meant for your hair, so natural hair is going to be much stronger than our hair. So there's just some hairstyles that natural hair people can get away with that. We cannot do so. It is unfortunate - and i did test that, but you know it is what it is. So those are some of the things that i do to protect my ends. So yeah i am not persification becomes still relaxed here. I am not a professional, but i do know what works for me. I do know that there are other styles that i can do to protect my aunts and, like i said it before, just make sure that you just moisturize your ends and try to top them away, especially when you're sleeping, don't be lazy. Take out your clip-ins and don't relate too much on the sew-in by doing too much slowly with the cornrows and the threads and just flat iron, your edges all the time and using these edge controls that are so drying for your edges, just minimalize how you use It everything you you do should be in moderation: don't don't overdo it so that you can protect your edges and you can protect your ends. So this is the end of the video. Thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate it and let us have a discussion down below what you think about these protective styles when it comes to relax here and if you do have any recommendation. I am willing to hear because, yes, i do miss some of these hairstyles, so make sure to subscribe to my channel leave a like on this video and comment down below. I will see you in my next one: bye,

Datchme Blessed: Every relaxed hair is different. U have to take into consideration that most of us who is relaxed have different Hair Type, different Density. Some woman like myself use box braids, or corn rows as a protective style for months and it aids in my hair growth significantly. I’m sure their or other relaxed hair woman who can get away with those styles. I personally would alleviate heat styling for me like using flatirons are detrimental to my hair journey so I avoid it at all cost.

Patricia lamptey: you're stating facts because I've had extreme breakage with these styles. I just learned to leave my hair alone and do these low manipulation styles. Thanks for the video.

Rachael Rae: I texturized my hair on May 4th. I've been doing twist and air drying on wash days. The growth has been insane. I've been so happy. I decided around July to try individual braids and crochet at the root to make twist. My hair hated it. It didn't break the hair, but it was very drying. I only left it in for about 3 weeks. I think I will just stay with individual twist without any hair added.

damnimshy: I wear old fashion cornrows and my hair thrives throughout my relaxer stretches. I tend to do them myself , so I don't have to worry about someone doing them too tight to cause breakage. Moisturizing your hair while they are in braid is a big must!!! Also , take into consideration that most of the hair that you lose in braids is shed hair. It tends to look like a lot of hair due to you not combing your hair everyday. At the end of the day , everyone has different hair types and different strokes works for different folks. I glad that you found something that works out for your hair and understanding what it likes and doesn't like. Great video !!

SayItLoud: I'm relaxed and get crochet braids at 10-12 weeks and it's really grown my hair out a lot. I do take care of my hair underneath though. I moisturize my hair and oil my scalp regularly! I get crochet braids done twice a year and wear them for 2.5 to 3 months. I got individual braids once and LOVED the look but they broke off my hair, they were too tight and too heavy and I was only 4 weeks post relaxer at the time... no bueno!

Aja Dozier: I think this applies to finer relaxed hair. I think those with coarser and thicker relaxer hair can get away easily with braided hairstyles.

Autumn BReeze: For Sew-in wait adleast 4-8weeks after relaxer, then use a sewing net over braids to reduce friction and tension. My last sew-in lasted 3months my hair was fine and had SO MUCH GROWTH.

Kelli Johnson: I agree with everything you said. Those styles are not for relaxed hair. I had braids earlier this year that took my edges right out. I’m using Pine Tar to grow them back out.

GoldenAngel: I concur. The solution for me is high or low loose bun when im stretching my relaxer. Braids are a no no for my thin relaxed hair

Life As Ezinne: Knotless braids work on my relaxed hair. I also keep my hair extremely moisturized when it’s in braids.

Jess Lopes: Low bun without gel or other heavy products is my way to go. You can also add a fake ponytail and it looks good

Kris Latoya: Seeing this takes me back to a story. Back in 2015, my birthday was coming up and I decided to get a sew in. I sent the lady a picture of my hair and I remember her commenting your hair is long, why do you want a weave. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SIGN but again celebrating 25th birthday, I wanted to switch up the look. When I took out this weave 4 weeks later, I noticed that there were rubber bands on the ends of my hair, I started questioning why knowing those can cause breakage and I noticed light ends after I washed. It just felt so different. By the time I got to the stylist and this was a new lady too, she informed me that I will have to cut it as my ends were broken. I ended up with a bob where the end of my hair was touching my nape. Gosh and my hair was doing so well too before that weave.

Meliza: It's about hair maintenance in between those styles, trims, etc. Use nylon thread for sew ins. Keeping hair oiled when in corn rows and never tight hence as why I do my own braids

Takeyah Onje: i’m currently wearing soft locs and i’m relaxed! i always make sure my hair underneath is moisturized at all times and i’ve had some new growth!

Bettye Opoku: I think it depends on how you take down your protective styles and how tight they are when they are put in. And it's a bad idea to get braids right after you are freshly relaxed. Your hair is super fragile when you have a fresh relaxer. And protective styles work for some people more than others so you just have to figure out what works with your hair.

Cats and Gymnastics: My mom stopped putting braids in her relaxed hair because it used to damage and pull out her hair.

Candycane: I’ve gotten a relaxer and a sewin and left in for 2 months I had no breakage at all maybe you needed a protein treatment before the protective style

shernet brown: braids definitely tear my hair out when I'm trying to stretch my relaxer

RelaxedWithDee: Great points Less is more with the edge control!!

Pierry wolphnie Condé: There is no way i'm gonna put box braids in my freshly relaxed hair. It doesn't make sense for me. I relaxed my hair every 6 months. The first 3 months i just really enjoyed my relaxed hair, baby my hair, wash and deep condition bi-weekly, moisturize and seal in beetween, scalp massage with my fingers with some great oils, doing a lot of low manipulation hairstyles and never put flat iron in my hair. 3 months later , when i have so much new growth, this is when a put loose medium box braids in my hair, this help me to avoid any kind of tension not only on my roots, but also on my demarcation line. I have thin edges so medium box braids its what work for me instead of the smalls and larges one because this is the perfect balance weight. My braids are not too long , not too tigh , and not to heavy. I know a lot of people don't wash their hair while in braids. I don't know where this idea come from, but me personnaly i need to wash my scalp so i kept to my routine. Washing my scalp bi-weekly as usual, i don't really deep condition but i put conditionner on my braids for 3-5min, rinse it out and use a mixture of half and half or water and the same hydrating conditionner as a leave-in in a spray bottle, i also use this mixture between in, once a week for moisturize/ refreshing my braids and i seal with grease.the moisture stay for a longer period. As a result, i don't experiment major breakage when remove the braids because i don't have lot of buildup, and the tension wasn't on my demarcation line. My physiological shedding as reduced also due to the oils that i use for my scalp massage, i don't lose to much hair and my length are very moisturize, healthy, with 0 frizz or split ends.have so much elasticity and shinny. It's look like a healthy, shinny very defined braidout kind a situation. Also i took time to properly detangles. Braids by braids with water for smooting my new growth , and oils to remove possible nots on my already relax hair and a rat tail combs as a backup to make sure that i remove every single nots before washing. This routine works extremelly well for me because as a results my hair is became not only long but voluminous, thick and darker. I used to have ashy brown color hair but since i started my hair journey it's become darker and darker. It's look black Everybody is different i guess. What's work for someone may have not for someone else but at the ends my tough is healthy hair became on a healthy scalp. If you don't take care of your scalp properly when you protective styling ,of course you gonna retain length because your hair is protected but your new growth can be fragil, dry and brittle. So basically you will lose your hair when the take down. This could be the reason why protective styles are not working for certain people. I wash bi weekly so yes i use a clarifying shampoo first. I always clarifying then go to a hydrating shampoo. It's impossible for me to neglect my scalp over my length.

Rebekah Joseph: Braided wigs are a way to get away with these hairstyles. I have seen some nice pics of lace wigs with faux locks, box braids, etc. Also maybe big or medium knotless box braids instead of small ones

Tracey Lennon: They use threading to tweeze eyebrows..imagine what it's doing to your HAIR!!

Yasmin T: So true when I had protective styles my hair was knotted and matted. And when you have new growth mixed in with relaxed it’s so easy to get tangled.. if I do get braids I will only leave it in for 2 weeks in and wouldn’t wash it while I have the braids . Also, I wouldn’t wash my hair the same day I take the braids out and detangle. When you’re washing it do not scrub your scalp. Put shampoo in a applicator bottle to make sure it reaches the scalp.

Kiara Ransom: That’s not particularly true its just different for every individual some people have a lot of breakage and shedding with these styles but at the same time it also helps a lot of people with treated hair protect their hair. Just remember that you shed a lot of hair shed everyday. I do agree with not over manipulating freshly relaxed hair but it doesn’t have to be four weeks. It all comes down to the health of your hair really also for some people genetics. There is no sure wrong or right way of how to treat hair in certain areas you just have to find out what works best for you.

Tino: I'm slowly becoming obsessed with this channel

Destin Julz: You can do braid & sew in just not 4-6 weeks post relaxer, don't put them in tight and don't leave then in for more than 6 weeks try that in then longer as u see how your respond to it. you can look at Brianna Rashay channel and Seun Okimi channel they have grown long relax hair with protective styles

Teleah: I just got a sew in at 8 weeks post relaxer. I plan on leaving in my hair for 2 months. A net was used braids weren't too small.. Im just hoping for very little to no breakage

SUNSHINE SANDY: I have relax hair, and anytime i try braid or cornrow my hair breaks alot.

CloudyWhistle: Yeah, well for me I just have my hair tied up in a high pony tail almost all the time haha

Yaya 17: I agree with you I took out my 4 weeks old weave and my hair is brittle and dry so much breakage

Kimberly Dixon: I relax 2x yearly and usually by the 12-16 week mark it is puffy.I have braids of almost any kind for protection

MELANIE: I wait 8 to 10 days after relaxing. then I get my hair crochet..I keep it oiled and moisturized. My hairstyle also make sure she doesn't Braid my edges tight nor does she attach heavy hair to the ends of my hair

Quacey: Braids overall is a no for me i did it once and i lost so much hair and my edges were gone.

Aicha V: Totally true ✅

Ergo Proxy: Are knotless braids and box braids good for when you’re transitioning from relaxed to natural? I’ve been transitioning for 5 months now.

Janice Asante: Getting braids breaks my hair so much

Yaya 17: I agree with you I took out my weave last night my hair is brittle and dry

Pat B: I think box braids are fine for relaxed hair ..but do them big ans moisturize one a week with a liquid spray leave in

Ruth Lombongo Andre: I love this styles too but my scalp itches alot what ever braid I do

Seasoned Queen: The thing is, everyones hair is different. If u have fine hair strands these r not for you but if you have thick coarse hair like I do, your hair can thrive with the proper takedown. Like my hair thrives with braids. Length increase, everything,. Its not the style, its how you take care of the hair under the protective style and how you take down the style after

HLBD: is it okay to use protective styles when transitioning

mstcherie13: I think braids and straightening my leave out broke off my edges on one side of my hair and it's never recovered its just like a twa in that area

דחשטףשף SHAYLA: This is why I don't relaxed my hair I let my hair be natural.

0tismadaline: Very true, l agree with you

SANDYTHEBLACKROSE TV: Damn I agree with you.

Alex Reid: Box and even knotless braids ain't it for real. The worst "protective style". I think the best is wigs and crochet hair with braids underneath

Jazzene B: my hair is thick and relax and I can do almost do any hair style and it grows except cornrows braid and lace wig tears out your hair line

Sherry Bogan: Your hair is so pretty i wish I can get mine that way or very similar I'm relaxed to but I mostly wear ponytail what products would work i have thin and soft medium length hair

YESHUA MAAME.: Is straighting ur relaxed hair good? And do u do it? Please.

Let's talk about it: I keep saying over and over again that I'm gonna stop wearing braids. I'm relaxed but when I relaxed my hair it seem so thin so I relax and within a day or two I briad it back up. But I'm trying to grow my hair longer and thicker but can't seem to let the braids go. Currently have knotless braids

Truly Blessed: Of course it isn’t because it’s tugging of the hair

Notty J: I just took out my braids and never will I do that again.

Hannah Wahid: Totally

Tekona Henry: Gurllllll it's the cry at the end of "ny edges would start right here" fo me!!!

Kimberly Dixon: how often do you relax?

Tofunmi Adenuga: what about knotless braids?

Jessye Mulamba: How about micro links?

Chanice Rich: hey sis where is you're top from I love it !

karfeisha olyia: Honey i had long relax hair but my hussy said braid my hair and thats was it my hair had to cut not going back to that

Uvuvwevwevwe Onyetenyevwe Ugwemubwem Ossas: How about doing some twists? Like rope twists?

Faustina Owusu:

Janay Wilson: What about quick weaves

Jacquelyn Johnson: They are not for you. Everybody hair is different.

libfuzzy: Your beautiful

Pink Lemonade: I think a lot of yall in these comments are in denial…

Kenia Sharpe: So stop relaxing your hair
