Trying Heatless Curls On My Curly Hair (Watch This Before You Try)

COMING IN HOT with HEATLESS CURLS. Hot as in hot mess that is

There are many different options we textured-haired people can do to create styles on our hair and this is one of them! Important things to note:

Unless you have naturally straight/ loose wavy hair, results will not look as good as they do on the TikTok stunners like @lillyvanbrooklyn .

However, I have a few key tips if you decide to give this a try!

-the hair needs to be wet/damp when wrapping, otherwise, your natural waves curls, and coils will not take to the rod shape

-using styling products like leave-in conditioners, frizz cream, and even wrap foam will help give the hair shine and hold around the rods.

-a brush nearby will be your best friend so you can keep the hair smooth while wrapping

-twisting the hair away from your face before wrapping it around the rod will help secure it in place and smooth

-DONT be like me and allow this to FULLY DRY to set. This can take anywhere from 12-48 hours so be patient or be disappointed

Let me know below if you want to try/have tried! OR if this post told you to not even bother LOL

Every time I watch these videos, I always thought wow. I could never, but I can't speak from inexperience. So, if you're going to try it out well roll the clip now I absolutely do need to spray in or just apply some kind of leave-in conditioner. If I don't, I will be a frizzy disaster. Here'S the thing, though I can't do this on slightly damp hair, so it needs to be decently damped because you want to make sure that you are truly smoothing out any kinks and curls and frizz and everything. That'S naturally in your hair, while you are wrapping it's just that this is going to take about three to six to 12 hours to completely dry thousand years later, I think we're finally dry. I put makeup on low expectations, let's unravel Shelby, let's try separating okay. So I definitely messed up. I thought it was dry. Obviously wasn't, however, although it's cool and it might be good technique for more wavies or even a little bit of a loose or curly. I don't believe it's gon na work for me.

Sarah Serabian: YASS thank you for trying this Mell so we don’t have to i really was curious and now feel reassured it’s okay to skip this one

CT1010101: I have mostly 3A curls and it works great for me. But it does take legit 24+ hours to dry and I live in a desert. I use a bandanas instead of that rod thing and it's a cute hairstyle that I can go out in public in while I'm waiting all those many hours for it to finish drying.

Sliver Lining _: Lol back in my teen years I tried all the heartless curls and straightening methods. There’s only one straitening method I’m aware of, it does work however it’s hard to get most of the strands and there’s always something kinky. As for the heartless curls..... always kinky lol even if you’ve successfully done one of the methods and it somewhat did what it was supposed to, the top is always kinky. The hair usually over curls too since it wants to be curly naturally lol looks so strange. Can’t even figure out how to compare it haha. it never works My hair is really curly but your curls are tighter. Still doesn’t work xD

megleland: I have fine/thin/2C-3A. If I did this on wet hair it would look as bad as yours did...BUT it flat irons easily (would be more curly if I never straitened). The overnight heat-less curls are a great way to style for the second day on dry hair. Gives me those "beach waves" or 70's "body".

Tan Rose: Yah-flashback to childhood and mum putting foam curlers in my 2b,c hair and INSTANT FRIZZY 'FRO!!! It was shocking (& not pretty like little Orphan Annie!) I remember my friends showed up for Brownies and I ran to my room balling my eyes out (cuz they SAW me!! .... (197-something by the way! LOL✌)

CherryBeeBee: Not sure on the curly hair with it but it definitely works wonders for wavy hair at least, tried it on my human hair wavy wig. I washed it once and after it never looked as good as when I first got it but i did this and it is so beautiful again

heidii: It looked beautiful out the gate so I have no doubt you could get even better results.

Amanda: didn’t work on my 3c curls and I gave it a solid try. Fell for the marketing ‍♀️

Lashawna Brady: @manesbymell. Yes damp hair...and add a anti frizz serum and you have to smooth out(brush out) your naturally culy hair and then wrap your hair around curler. Completely Dry.

Tereza Cholevíková: I have just a bit wavy hair naturally. Tried this few days ago. Slept. Woke up with a nest on my had. Ended up with a bun and washing next night.

Reise Piece: I think you’d have to blow dry or straighten your hair first. Might as well use foam curlers at that point though ‍♀️

J Love: You have to comb scalp hair slick then put a old school fabric headband on top of scalp like pulling a halo over your head. Then wrap 1 inch sections around the headband tight while adding more hair but dont pass 1 inch thickness. I have curly thick hair and it works that way. Run blower on cool to make sure scalp is dry. The drier your hair is when doing this the quicker it dries. You're putting too much hair and its loose so your curl pattern even though its thin is still noticable. Also that fabric used on that tool is not gonna work for curls it wont let you wrap it tight to form a new curl pattern. That tool is for limp straight hair

Autumn Feldpausch: Lol the comment on the hair drying..yes it takes a long time to dry..like all freakn day sometimes. I've found that it will dry a lot faster using no conditioner but after a week of no conditioner I have dry undesirable tresses

Samantha M.: Even though it's probably not the intended result, I genuinely think it still looks good as a curl pattern

Aurora Rivera: Girlyyy to get better results you have to lay your hair flat on the thing and not twist it while you wrap your hair around it

daftoptimist: I’m a wavy and I love mine. I put leave-in and mousse or custard, dry my hair to about 90% with a round brush, and wrap it up, putting my bangs in velcro rollers. Works out great most of the time.

Bbymks5: My hair would never dry!

sha: I feel like if you flat wrapped it instead of twisting & used a foam it would’ve worked better. Treat it like a flexi rod set idk

Morgan Veller: My sister has slightly wavy hair and has one of these and does her hair with it every night and it looks fabulous on her! I could never with my 3b hair

Rai Land: I love your videos. I’m a wavy girl and while your videos have helped me too but I really watch them for my spouse and baby! My MiL never taught him how to handle his curls. Now I’m helping them both *love* their hair instead of fight it. ❤

Pamela Averrett: As a wavy, it works, but I still have to hit the roots with a flat iron…. Which defeats the purpose of no-heat style

Rightonlimes: Yoooo I was just thinking about this, I have curly hair and this would look terrible on my hair. Thank you for taking one for the team.

Carla Flores: I tried this on my self & it works:)! The trick is to Blow Dry your hair Straight first and then proceed to do the rest. I'd say give it another try Mel

TruthLiesBeneath: I knew that was gonna happen. You need to blow out your hair. Girls with real curls can’t do this. This for people with wavy and straight hair

VAwitch: Like you, I have tight 3C/3D curls (I've been called a blonde orphan Annie when my hair was super short). I can't see anything that doesn't involve heat doing much to relax my curl in a flattering way. Or a LOT of product to weigh it down while drying after a comb-through.

Néné: Your hair is so gorgeous no matter what you do to it.

106andie: It definitely works on blown out hair, I’d suggest blowing it out but not flat iron after to prevent heat damage.

Mandie Atwood: For me only damp was fine, but I definitely had to weigh her down with some curl cream to tame the beast! That's what helped me, BUT as you well know, we are all very different! Like some beautiful snowflakes ❄, no two curly/wavy heads are the same! Oh, and Mel, where'd you get that super cute gold link/coin chain combo??!! It's like, killing two birds with one stone! I wonder who came up with that term. Always with love! ♡♡♡

Donna Stapleton: Truth. I always just roll my eyes at these! However i did see the very timely straw hair on a little girl that turned out AMAZING! And i can agree id have to do tiny sections and some oond of masive hold stuff !! But id love to try it if itd give me some curl back!! Ill be the old lady w curlers in my hair all the time

Elizabeth Erne: That satin material and the way you wrapped it are why. Find one with different fabric and do not twist the hair. Comb it flat.

Sydney Rue: I remember this video where you tried all the TikTok trends. This works decently on my wavy hair but for people with this right of curl in the hair I’m sure it doesn’t work as well

Kalea Loper: Straighten it first then do it and see what happens make a video so we an see

Amber A: I have to start with blowdried straight hair, so if I've already straightened it one day, and want a different look for the next day or two, I'll do this. I do have to VERY lightly spray it with water. After wrapping, I'll use a little bit of hairspray and go to bed. A little hair oil after removing it in the morning, and it's good to go. All that to say, it can be done on curly hair.......but only if you straighten it first, which defeats the purpose . But if you've already got it straightened, might as well ‍♀️

Black Tinkerbell: Try it on blown out hair ? Xx

Adrienne Brailsford: Works great on my blow dry hair and day old wash and go it preserves my curl and stretches

NIKKIA KING: So the scarf curl wrap you did in the other video was a better success huh?! I'm not really sure how using a scarf would be any different than using the rolled silk tool that you used in this video when you got the much better desired results. Now, your approach and technique in this video was definitely different from the other one you did with the scarf but I'm not sure you gave this a fair chance. Well... for one, you started with blow dried hair in the video with the heatless scarf curls video but you should have gotten the same results with this silk rod tool as you did in the other video especially if you had started out with blow dried hair. Also, another person noticed and commented that your technique was different too and I must concur with them (they mentioned the way you wrapped the hair around the tool was different, and I noticed that too. You twisted the hair as you wrapped it around the tool instead of smoothing and combing it through as you did in the heatless scarf video. Therefore, your results are going to be way different lol. Another difference is that in this video you try this with wet hair and with the other one (scarf heatless curls) you did it with dry hair and got better results and you were more patient with drying time but obviously no real drying time involved but you let it stay in overnight. I'm curious as to exactly how long you let it dry for was it overnight or not because if not that be a major difference too. Why would you rush one way of styling it and not the other, but if your hair is dry versus wet starting out you got to realize you're going to need to double your allotted time for drying if your trying to do this "heatless" also. Making sure your hair is completely dry before you take the hair tool out is definitely key and will give different results. Your technique and approach using the scarf and the silk rod is different but had you used the same technique and wrap method then you would have probably gotten the same results. I think you should redo this video and do a comparative analysis of dry vs wet hair for both tools, and keep the techniques the same that way your giving each tool a fair shake. This is blow dried hair on each tool vs wet hair on each tool (scarf vs silk rod wet vs blow dried hair)...‍♀️ just a thought

cool mom: I have curly hair and I've been wondering if I could get this to work for me I'm glad I didn't buy it cuz it turned out just as I thought it would.

Julie: Doesn’t even work on my 3a curls lol!

jenifer wendt: I do this on my blow dried or straightened hair it works well

Veronika Mcduffey: Not working on my head even if I tried for 2000 years

xeroxing: I would recommend that you straighten it with a flat brush and a blow dryer straightener until completely dry and then because you have curly hair you must not twist the sections when wrapping.

JC7 Blessed: 2000 years later so what u saying is thats day 730,000 hair... I mean I mean wha... winter routine update pronto n upfronto!!! please and thank youuu

Chrystina O.: This style NEVER works for me either! Hair be too curly ;) lol

Olivia Rule: Thank you for trying this so I don’t have to

Pragya Singh: I want to see if it makes a difference if you use some styling product with it too, like a mousse or something. Would you be willing to retry it with a styling product too?

Witchy Aunt Lana: My hair would just never dry.

RhiannonChann: I'm a looser curly and I have to blow-dry straightish first, otherwise it does not work out

Perla: That front curl looked good though

G: I love it!

SiaDeCursed1: I wouldn’t touch this "technique" with a 10 foot pole, it screams to me wavy frizzy limp tangly hair all over.

diana cooper-havlik: Yup…I totally get it!

Daniella S.S.: I think the after looked better than your before so im confused

Jessica: it's not going to work for you because you have natural awesome ass hair and look like a little angel

Rio grande lily: Would not work on my frizzy wavy hair either. Unless I flat iron it first

Alyssa Hamlett: If you're gonna try it try it with your hair soaking wet also put a silk scarf over it while you sleep because you're just creating frizz moving about your pillow

Daryl M: Super cute… JUS saying

J Mac: Yeah my hair isn’t even that curly and that method doesn’t work on me. I have wavy roots and cow licks.

Radio Vive: Maybe if you blowed it out first? I think that would work a lil better with some foam mousse?

Sanne C: Mell this. Wouldn't work for me either. I have 3a and can't with all the love in the world straighten my hair. :(

Zoe: Really is suitable for people in the 1-2 category, and not as thick hair

blue&red: This didn't work for me either honestly I think it only really works for straight hair the best, i threw mine away honestly a waste of money in my eyes

Heather, of Crunchy Leaves: That was freaking cute though

Anna D: I don't know if maybe this was the problem, but for one you twisted it while wrapping around.

Momma Bear MaryAnn: I think you might need to straighten your hair first.

FlowerPower 233: Mel did you go blonde again?

CQ: I believe this is for people with straight hair... I don't think you're supposed to add curl on top of curly hair....?

K dam: U have a naturally pretty dace

Princess: You resemble Kylie Jenner

K dam: Face
