No Heat Curls, Sponge Rag Rollers Tutorial

How to make heatless curls, overnight! Create lovely, no hassle curls with these fun sponge rag rollers.

Although I would love to take credit for this amazing idea.... I am not the creative genius behind these sponge rag rollers. This is a (gasp) copied design! I first saw this idea on Pinterest (where else?) http://pinterest.com/hair4myprincess which led me to a very fun blog called "The Mother Huddle" http://www.themotherhuddle.com/diy-foa... which you should definitely check out!

I'm typically not really much of a crafter, but this is one of those projects that I could not pass up. No sewing or gluing involved, very quick and easy, fairly inexpensive, and a great end result. This needed to happen, and needed to be shared!

We have always loved the overnight curls created by standard sponge (or foam) rollers. I remember using these when I was a little girl, so they have been around for a long time! But "The Princess" doesn't particularly enjoy sleeping in them because the plastic clamps (which secure the rollers to your head) typically end up poking her at some point during the night. We have also had problems with her long hair getting snagged and tangled around the edges and hinges of these rollers, which can be a nightmare when it is time to take them out. And, as much as I love classic "rag curls" for certain occasions, they are not my favorite because the curls can end up being very tight and frizzy looking. These sponge rag rollers really are the best of both worlds. Nice, smooth, uniform curls, and no discomfort while you are sleeping!

We opted for the largest size of sponge rollers we could find, as we wanted soft, loose, and bouncy curls this time. You can definitely purchase smaller rollers if you prefer tighter curls though. The ones we ended up buying are made by "Conair" and I noticed at least 3 different sizes available and several other brands while we were looking.

These curls are going to come out a little bit different depending on how you wrap them up as well. We chose to wrap them up horizontally this time, which creates more of a tousled, natural looking curl. You could wrap them vertically instead for more of a spiral look.

Today, I'm going to show you how to make some sponge rag rollers you're, going to need some scissors foam, rollers, a plastic craft needle and some fabric. The first thing you want to do is take all the plastic off these rollers. This is how you do it. You want to clip it and pull it off. You want to cut your fabric into 1-inch strips I've, cut a little piece right here and I'm going to tear it now. Then you cut these strips into foot on pieces. Now you want to put this fabric through the hole in the sponge to do this, I'm using a plastic craft needle you can use whatever you have. That is small enough to work. I'M going to wrap the fabric around the needle and push it through the roller. Sometimes they are a little hard to get through, but you've just got to keep pushing now, they're ready to go in my hair, okay, we're going to show you how to put these in real fast and we actually haven't put sponge rollers in her hair for a While because she doesn't like sleeping with the plastic clamps and we've also found that the longer her hair gets, we've had trouble with hair getting tangled around the hinge and then when we go to take these out, it rips some of her hair out. So we're really excited about this idea, so you're going to want to make sure that each piece is tangle, free before you roll it up and then her hair here is damp. I wouldn't say it's soaking wet, but it is damp and then I'm going to start by placing the roller underneath the strand of hair and then just getting that first little bit started. And then you can just roll it up the rest of the way. And then, when you get up to the top you're, just going to finish this off, like you, would a rag curl and taking the ends of the fabric and tying them into a knot. So that's all there is to it. Of course, if you didn't want to go all the way to the top, you could leave it down a little bit so that the curls start down lower. You can do it, however, you want, and then something that you want to keep in mind is that you are going to have to take these out in the morning. So you don't want to get you're, not super tight. I'M just barely kind of tying that on there so that it will be easy to release. So I had that first row done: I'm just going to continue to work my way up her head and I'm taking about inch wide sections as I go up until this point. I'Ve put these in pretty haphazardly, but on this top row I am going to make a part first before I put these in just so that when we take these out, her hair will already be parted, where I want it, because it's kind of hard to part. After the curls are already placed, so I just made a side part and then I'll put the rest of those in alright. Here'S what her hair looks like all rolled up. We ended up using 15 rollers in total, and these come 12 in a package. So we ended up buying two packages and I believe they were around $ 4 each. You could probably get away with just one package. We used a few more because her hair is super long. So I wanted to take smaller sections but she's going to go to bed and then we will see how these come out in the morning. Hey guys we're back and she slept on these overnight, so we're going to take them out and see what we've got. I love these because they actually come out very easily and quickly there's nothing to snag. So that is what the curls look like. I think they came out pretty cute okay. So here's how the curls turned out. I really like these because they're nice and loose and it's going to depend on the size of rollers, you use, we got the biggest ones they have available. They also have smaller ones, which are going to create a lot tighter curls, but I think this turned out to be a pretty good method.

Wanda Metcalf: I never thought to do this! I'm going to try this on my step daughter. We always have fails because she can never sleep on the due to being poked in the scalp and discomfort. Thank you for the tip!

Magenta Dawn Sky: Thank you ladies! Brilliant idea, much easier than trying to roll rags in their own x

Jamie 0xJxxMx0: You can use tighter knots by using half bows. It's just like tying your shoes, but pull one of the loops straight through and pull the knot tight. When you're ready to take it out you pull on the end of the intact loop and it comes undone easily.

LisaFreemontStreet: I'm excited to use these for vintage styling. The clamp of sponge rollers makes a dent in the finished style since I brush to a smooth wave. This may solve the problem. I'll link you when I try it. ;)

Princess Hairstyles: Yes, we are loving these because they are so comfortable to sleep in!
