The last in my roller series, this video is dealing with the wonderful rollers called 'Clairol Jumbo Curls' or 'Clairol Big Curls'...the curls will be larger than a standard foam roller set but super vintage appropriate.

Today, we're going to talk about foam, uh, big curls, conair, big curls, foam flexi rods, whatever you want to call them. This is them and we're going to talk about how to use them so stay tuned. Hello! Welcome to lady and waking. My name is ashley. This is a channel dedicated to vintage beauty over 40, but it is also going to include lots of tricks for vintage styling of any age. So if that is your thing feel free to subscribe, like comment, i'm trying not to say rate i've said rate ever since i started on youtube because that's just sort of been the thing, but it's not really rating anymore, is it. It hasn't been for many years. So i apologize for that. That was brought up in some comments in a prior video, and i didn't even notice i was doing it um, so this is what we're going to be talking about today. This is what they call. I think these are called conair, big curls. This is a roller set that is sort of modern. I just recently found out about them, probably in like 2020 or so a friend of mine used them religiously on her instagram, and i was just amazed by the results. So they don't have quite the same result on me as they do on her and we'll talk about why, at the end of this video, when we're discussing the pros and cons. But this is what they look like. They are sort of a very, very thick thick foam with a wire on the inside, so once you bend them, they stay bent. They work the same way that flexi rods do they stay in your hair all night long. There'S no issues at all with that again, we'll talk about the pros and cons at the end of this video, but that's basically what they are. I usually use a setting solution to spray my hair damp. I usually start with dry hair on all of my wet sets. I do not start ever with damp or wet hair, so i sprayed my hair each strand wet or damp with a solution of water, which is basically three parts. Water and one part, miss curlette, hair setting potion now. This is not something that's easily or readily available. If you are just looking for something to help with the longevity of a wet set, there are lots and lots of options. One of my favorites is motions, foaming, wrap lotion and i'm actually going to do a bonus. Video today talking about all of the products and tools that i use for vintage styling, i feel like it's very important. I did a little mini version of this on tik tok recently, but i thought it might be good to do a spoken version of that as well. So this will be a bonus video today we're going to talk about your tools and your products. That are, i feel, like your must-haves for vintage styling. That said today, i just had my setting potion or my setting solution. My rollers and i just brushed my hair - really really nicely ahead of time or really thoroughly ahead of time. With my denman styling brush this sort of invigorates the scalp, it opens up the pores and i think it makes it more receptive to whatever products you use. So i do feel like that. That'S really important, i'm not sure what kind of a set we're going to end up with today so we'll see, but i actually used two sets of these rollers. They only come eight to a pack and for the type of roller or the type of set that i like, or the type of curl that i like. That'S, not really going to be sufficient. As a matter of fact, if you have thick hair and you try setting your entire head in eight rollers, it's more than likely going to take forever for them to dry, so i don't necessarily think these are the best. If you just buy one set. I don't really know what good they would do unless you were just buying them for the top of your head, which i have done before and then using another type of set on the bottom, because these are great for the top of your head. For obvious reasons, they give you a lot of volume, but they also give you a significant amount of of wave. These are not going to be a tight curl. Obviously these are called big curls for a reason and we'll see what we turn out with. So i'm going to go ahead and do the setting and the styling and we will get back to the pros and cons at the end. So with this set, i'm going to start with clean dry hair parted on the side and i'm going to use two packs of the jumbo big curls and that's going to give me about 16 rollers, total, but you'll see it doesn't really. You don't really have to put you, don't have to be really specific about how you split up this set, but i am going to take the top section, the crown portion at the back of my part and i'm going to roll it backwards and then bend the Roller forward and that's going to make that piece fall, have a little bit more volume at the back of my crown and then at the front of the crown right behind my bangs. I'M gon na take another piece about the same width about two inches. I'M gon na wrap it tightly around the roller and i'm gon na roll that backwards and then bend it backwards, and you can kind of lock those in together to kind of keep them in place. But i've just discovered that i like to set my hair straight up on the top with these rollers because they really do well with volume. And then i'm going to take all of the sections around the sides and back of my head and i'm going to roll them downward and bend the roller upward. So that's going to secure it into a downward position, and so all the hair is going to be curled under and i'm just going to basically go from one side to the other and all the way around the sides and back of my head again grabbing about Two inch sections spraying it with my setting lotion solution, pulling it tightly around the center of the roller and then bending it upward and you'll notice. These just really secure nicely, but after i've gone through and i've done all of the hair, all the way to the nape of my neck, where i sort of split it in half and then just do one side and then the other side after i've completed that, Then that's your completed set and i don't usually have to use a scarf to set it with, because i feel like that. These rollers have such a lot of body to them that they sort of protect the set on their own and then in the morning, i'm going to after they've completely dried, i'm going to remove them from the bottom up. So i kind of unwind, each curl and you'll see that it falls tightly like almost like a spiral curl it's tightly tight at the bottom and then more loose and has more volume at the top. So that's really really great for hot roller styles. For any styles sort of, like you know, betty from mad men or anyone that has a little bit more volume, this works really well on mid-length hair for a grace kelly style as well. So i'm just going to brush, through with my denman styling, brush, to break up the curls and after i've gotten the curls broken up. You'Ll see that frizz comes in i'll, take my curl shaper brush and i'll sort of start to shape the hair, and i just do that by taking the hair and pulling it tight and brushing the bottom around my hands so that it forms sort of a nice Under wave sort of like a page boy, it's not a complete page boy, but it is sort of a more loose kind of lauren, bacall style. So after you've gotten your hair into the shape and the the sleekness that you want. You'Ll notice, there's just not a whole lot of denting. You can see there at the top there's just a little bit of some ridge action going on not exactly sure where that came from probably just the way that i had them had the hair set. You can easily get rid of that with teasing, but after the hair is nice and finished you're just going to spray it into place and my bangs i couldn't decide what i wanted to do with them. I think i pinned them out of the way and then i take them down and put them into a little bit of a shaped curl, and then i pin them back so who knows, but that's the finished style. So that is the results of the big curls and, of course this is one of my favorite like loosenesses of set, i like a looser set, especially as i get older. I feel like it's a little bit more youthful, a little less a little a little more timeless um this. This type of a style um is very popular for um, like a bombshell look, and so when, when we have a vintage styling channel generally people who don't do vintage all the time will send him requests for looks that are popular and by far lauren, mccall or Veronica lake style, sometimes arita, hayworth, look, looser waves are generally what people want. There'S some pros, and some cons to this type of a roller set pros of this type of set is the the loose pretty resistant wave. So, basically, you can get this same sort of wave from a heated set from curling iron or from hot rollers. But if you are like me and live in the southern us or a place with a typically very humid environment, those sort of sets just don't hold. This will hold, even though it has the same look as hot rollers. So that's why i am such a big fan of this type of a roller, especially if i'm wanting something looser something that's a little bit more of a wave as opposed to a curl. That'S one of the best things about them. I love love, love the look of the curl that they give and the ease of the brush out. It'S a very easy brush out. There'S not a lot of you. Don'T have to do as much brushing out because you're going for a looser look anyway and the curls are already looser. So you don't have to take a very tight set and brush it and brush it and brush it until it's formed and shaped into the type of a wave or curl that you want. You actually get that almost immediately, so the ease of brush out is definitely a pro another thing i feel like it is um. Well, i think i already said it's just a great substitute for a heated set if you live in a high humidity environment. So those are some major pros. Plus you do get a nice, a nice vintage look. You can also do like a 90s vintage. Look with these. You can do an 80s look with these. They have all sorts of arrows that they would be appropriate for. So it's just a great great roller set to have in your arsenal now the cons. The first thing i would say is that you do get a bit of pull out. I have a few hairs, i don't know if you can see them that have pulled off of each roller. That is just from the grip of the foam texture. The texture is great for giving you a nice loose curl, but i have noticed that this type of foam, which is basically the same type of foam, um or sponge, that you have on a sponge roller, it's something about it. It grips the hair really tightly and sometimes it can cause a little bit of snagging. So there are some of these have a hair or two, but you don't lose a whole lot. So if you have thin hair, i wouldn't be that afraid of it. Another con is any type of roller set that you have to pull your hair tight and then bend to secure. They hold your hair, really tight. There'S not a lot of give so they're, not that comfortable for sleeping in it's a lot like flexi rods. I feel like that they are not very comfortable for sleeping on, not because of the actual product or fabric that it's made of, but because of the way that they hold your hair. They hold your hair so tightly that when you lay down it can sometimes pull, and it's not very comfortable. I don't find these very comfortable for sleeping on in spite of the pillowy texture, because they are so large um. They just sort of it's like having another pillow, and so your head is like in an awkward position. So if you can find a way to maybe prop your neck, so that you're not really on your pillow but you're, more laying on your neck supported, i think they would be a lot more comfortable. That way, i just haven't tried that yet i don't sleep in these a whole lot on my whole head. Typically, if i use these, it is just for a daytime set and then i'll take them out at night, but i have also been using these only on the top portion of my hair and then using pink curls on the bottom. So i haven't really noticed how uncomfortable they were for sleeping until last night, when i used them all over my head for the first time after sleeping um, another con. They are, of course, a looser set. So if you're somebody who's wanting 1930s or even 1940s, like more formed shaped styles, they may not be best for that. I don't think they're ideal for poodle styles unless you already have some curl or wave in your hair. I do not so, therefore i don't use them for that purpose. I use them only for a gentle waved set um betty draper style set that type of thing it's just not. These are not ideal for for tighter vintage, curls, obviously, but yeah. That'S really. The only cons that i could think of there's not a whole lot of cons. There they're an excellent set to have, like i said to substitute your your hot sets, but i don't think that they are better than flexi rods, because i prefer the type of curl. I get from a flexi rod set. I feel like it's a little longer lasting if i start out with a flexi rod set and i get sort of a more shaped - formed 1930s 40s curl. It will eventually relax over time and give me this. So i don't necessarily have to use this in order to get this type of. Curl is just not necessarily as quick but yeah. Hopefully that helps oh price. Another another pro is the price. These are, i think, six dollars for eight. So, for so that's all about the big curls we'll be going into just standard styling videos and makeup videos and even fashion videos from now on now that we've got this out of the way, because i feel like this was a great starter series for this channel. Just to kind of give you a general idea of what your favorite set may become, or what suits you best for what you're looking for in your vintage styling.
