Hi, I'm Michele O'Connor celebrity hairstylist. Today, I'm going to show you how to make relaxed, african-american hair look naturally curly. So today we're going to start with the tools that you're going to need to create this style. We'Re gon na need a gel we're gon na need to use flexi rods. Have a comb on hand as well as some type of a clip. A duckbill clip works perfectly. The gel I'll be using today is mazzani pure style, we're going to start off sectioning the hair. Today Jen is opting to go for a curly style that has a side part. So we're going to start with our parting about an inch and a half thick, keep in mind that we're just gon na twist the hair to create that naturally curly. Look. The gel will help us, because what we're looking for is the ability to pull that twist out without the hair being very stiff and flaking Jen tear is relaxed, and so we really don't need to over saturate the hair with product. We really just want the hair to mold into that twist pattern which is going to mimic curly hair so using just a drop, I'm emulsifying it I'm running it through the hair and then we'll start our twist. This is unlike a braid and the fact that it's just two pieces of the post 2/3 so we're going to take the hair and overlap them over each other, picking up new hair as we go along, and we continue on that double strand twist. Until we get to the ends of her hair because the hair is relaxed, the ends won't just stay together. So it's important to add some type of a curling rod. It could be a perm rod, it could be a flexi rod and now I'm going to wrap the hair around and roll the hair up on itself. All the way up, then we're going to close it, and this secures it prevent it from unraveling and there you have our finished first twist. You'Ll continue on in this same fashion, throughout the entire head of hair. Until you have twisted everything, bring it all the way down to the nape of the neck, and at this point your twists will be off of the scalp and you continue on until you get all the way to the bottom. You see, I haven't changed my pattern or change what I've done. It'S just off the scalp at this point and, as you can see, we've taken out all the rest of them, so you can already see where the curl and the natural look has come into play at this point, to create more volume, shake your head up! Keep in mind that this is relaxed hair that we're trying to look like voluminous natural curls. She went from very, very straight and basically with curls you're, really not looking for a definitive part, you're, just really looking for that very voluminous wild free, flirty, healthy and shiny. Looking hair - and this is what we've been able to achieve - that's how you get relaxed, african-american hair to look naturally curly, i'm michelle o'connor and thanks for watching

Joana: I am a dark-skinned, proud and confident Black woman. It is amazing to read some of the ignorant comments about this video from, more than likely, African Americans women who seem lacking of knowledge and history that all Black people do not have the same type of hair or that there are many shades of the Black skin. The bottom line is that we are all Black women and should respect each other regardless of hair or skin color. It is these same critical African American women who want to go natural but still use so many store bought chemicals to elongate their natural hair and do twists so that their natural hair looks curly - big contradiction!! Or they need to wear straight or curly weaves to hide their true natural, short, beautiful hair. Yet, they have the nerve to be judging who is Black or have Black hair. These women who made the comments and others of same narrow mind are hypocrites!! Black people in the Caribbean such as Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, Antigua, etc., etc., etc., and also countries such as Brazil where there are masses of Black people (far more than the United States) go to school, work, church, socialize everyday etc., etc with Black people mixed with Chinese, Indian, White, etc., etc., and know quite well that we are all Black people regardless of our color or type of hair....we have to live together and respect each other. My best friend is a Black woman mixed with Chinese - we don't have the same type of hair, but we always have fun talking and sharing photos on what we are doing with our hair. There is too much divisiveness among some (NOT ALL) African American women who want to turn their self-hatred on other Black women who do not look like them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=14&v=7Wm9k_VLkEg

Denise Nobles: Beautiful! Thank you for showing a "Relaxed" curl style...and FYI people. WE as African Americans comes in all skin colors and different hair types..she has a good grade of hair that happens to be relaxed...Geeezz!

Tammy Mitchell: Brilliant & beautiful! This is just what I needed to try the wavy/curly look at home. Thanks for the helpful lesson...Just became a new Subscriber!

Iris Owen Omoruyi: This natural hair movement is kinda backwards though, because it makes black women tear each other down. Wear your hair straight or curly for all I care. What really matters is education, it remains the only tool that will put black people ahead.

Libby Hill: Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial.  I have relaxed hair and would like to change it up to curls without adding heat and this is the perfect way to do it!!!  The model is beautiful and looks African American to me...disregard all the negative comments and please don't stop providing much needed info for us.  God bless you both!

Cyia Slappy: Haters much? The sister's hair turned out really cute. My 4b super thick hair is also better maintained in twistouts. I relax about 4 times a year, still treating my hair with the same care as when I was "natural." This keeps my hair moisturized and healthy. And I don't ever have to wear wigs or weaves, which saves me a ton of money.

Catie Castles: The curls don’t look natural but I still love it. I’ve been transitioning to natural hair for a year and a half and I’m over it. Gonna relax my hair and do this instead!

labodorlover: Not understanding the "race" comments, but THIS is my go to hair do, when i can't get to the hairdresser. But i do the braids instead of the twist, and while its still wet and let it dry over night . My hair is not as long as hers, but it is long. This is the perfect style for afro american hair if you want to grow your hair out. This is a great way to give your hair a break, and it last for about 2wks.

ALKAMIST: This is exactly what I do to my hair and I love the look my hair is in a short bob so it waves all the way through

Bronnie Davidson: Awesome! Thanks for the tutorial, and you ladies are lovely :-)

L. Christine Jones: very pretty! great job

Chantel Taylor: yayyy!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU! Finally I've found the perfect way!

lucy bolton: How long do you leave the rods in for?

Shawn Ruth: Beautiful job!

Raissah Straayer: nice video can someone tell me how long to leave the twists in the permrods before taking it out?

Lemons19902010: Beautiful!

Berly Henry: LOOOOOOVED IT!

Style Domination: This is amazing!!

its_be_linda: When she started shaking her hair I thought she was gone kill her Loved the video thanks helped so much

gokaren: I like how professional this vid looks

Alya Moktar: I just relaxed my hair. When can I curl it using the tools mentioned again? Like how long do I hv to wait?

Dol _: She has a healthy hair :) oh my god my hair would be a nightmare if I did this

ode2reading: Love it. I so regret relaxing my hair. I have been trying to achieve a natural look; I'm going to try this.

Sandra Brown: Absolute beauty

Rayvelynn Lee: Beautiful

tina mcclain-patton: Jesus... I am much lighter than hair I am black. Both parents are African Americans. People are so ridculous. Great video! FYI I also get a relaxer.

Claudia Gonzalez: Great video! Wtf with all the hate racial comments. Its curling relaxed hair, which by the way 99% of curly haired humans do no matter their race. They have the right and freedom do whatever they want to their hair without having to deal with all this race baiting.

Jazzmine Leigh: You get relaxed hair to look naturally curly by making small Bantu knots. Lol the curl is tight from root to end when you do it that way. Hers was a tame way to curl your hair without adding heat, maybe. But it didn't mimic natural curls by a long shot.

Teanna Bell: I love getting my hair washed at the salon

dolans // multi: nice job , it looks very pretty but not natural.

Jennifer Rosales: Wow ♡

83'Jude: WHOA!!! Can I try this on my pixie?

Yolanda Venable: Good technique so that you don't have to use a curling iron.

phillippa kong: i love it absolutely love it but how would i maintain it or would i have to do it each night? help anyone?

gokaren: These comments? Really? I have 4c hair. I dont have extreme African features but l am black. I have tried to embrace my hair naturally and l can't TAKE it no more....it hurts...time consuming...product consuming...so l am gonna let perm stay in for a little while and then flat twist. Its my hair and takes less time. I got places to go and stuff to do and l dont wanna keep wearing wigs n weaves.

FallnAngel07: People there are biracial people with 4c hair. Many are on YouTube. In the same way that darker skin doesn't mean 4c hair, lighter skin doesn't always mean 3a/3b hair.

Tiara Cameron: wow really beautiful and natural looking curls

Renée Eli: Black women already have naturally curly hair :) and it's beautiful

Dee Glam: she's totally black.... we have the same exact colour and I actually know people way fairer than she is.... and we like 100% black ....Nigerians in fact

Elvira Alligue: where you get the gel

Kayla: to me if I saw that woman across the street I would not think that is her natural hair pattern

Erica Hale: What length is her hair because i would like my hair to look exactly like that for school but im not sure if my hair is that length

mirielle mabi: wawoo that's great awesome

LoveTris •: what the name of the gel

Britney Ufomadu: +marish long i thought the same thing except for that " her hair looked curly already" thing

Gold D: Urgh. Don't know what I was expecting from Ehow.

oumousolo: that doesn't look natural, it looks like you used a half inch curling iton

Lisa H: It still looks like a set that's straight. Nice though

ash86marie: The hair model looks like Zoe Saldana

Lions of War: So cute model

Mudather Elnoor: Perfect

Miss Ma'am: Why relax naturally curly hair just to go out of your way to try and make it look naturally curly???

Teanna Bell: that's pretty

Zainab Atanda: This was posted on my birthday!!

kelly Goodman: that doesn't look natural and I also have 3 type hair

Nobody: eHow a trip I swear to god. Someone said this girl ain't even black LMAO

Toni Covey: I am 100% black with relaxed hair and the models texture of hair is the same as mine when healthy. Healthy meaning, no split ends and not weighed down with product and heat damage. I can completely believe that's what relaxed african american hair looks like when it's healthy. I've seen it on other ladies too. Instead of hating I simply complimented them on their hair and asked them where they get it done or what they do/use. So over the years I've been able to achieve relaxed and healthy hair. Well, at least for the most part...I don't keep up with getting my hair trimmed like I should lol.

kelsey: This doesn't look naturally curly at all!!!

Oluwatoyin Owosho: is it going to be curly forever or no

X Period: Probably should have used someone with 4c hair texture

Vanessa told you: how in the fuck does this look natural?

Latonia Butler: I love this but I have natural curly hair and my mom uses a flat iron to make it flat and she just washed my hair and it gets curly sooo this is a stupid video and I thought u would Learn something

Supreme Ascension: she single?

L: Why is it always titled African American. It's black hair not just American

Marish Long: um first of all this woman looks mixed. I'm only saying this because most relax heads(of type 4 textures which is what majority of black women have) have more textured coarse looking hair after relaxed, her hair looks like it was already pretty loosely curled before being relaxed (like type 3) and so the texture isn't that coarse. This title should be changed to "how to make type 3 relaxed hair look naturally curly" Just because not all black women have type 4 hair(although most do) so it wouldn't knock out the few that have type 3 hair.

Carmen Ice: That doesn't look any bit natural. If anything that looks like she curled her with a curling iron. This coming from a girl with 3a-3b-3c hair, and every bit black. So please do try again, lol.

Maal Sannai: I'm not racist or anything but she knows she can easily curl her hair because she has softer hair they always use the lightskin girls because it's easier but I need actuall black women with that kinky hair but they don't do that

FallnAngel07: I'm going to completely ignore the good hair bad hair debate in the comments. All she did was twist her hair and put flexi rods in. That's not making it naturally curly, thats just adding flexi rods. Y'all need to learn to love your curls instead of putting chemicals in it and then curling it.

Brianna Bryant: The girl getting her hair done ain't even black so... Bruhhh

MixedWhisper1977: You shouldn't need to go through all of this though, just wet your hair put some conditioner in your hair ( leave it in ) then put some mousse in it ( or gel , mousse works better ) then scrunch , as it starts to dry scrunch a little more, the more you scrunch while the hair is still wet ( not damp but WET ) the curlier it will get ( loose/looser curls ) once you get the desired curliness then stop scrunching and let it air dry the mousse will do the work and set. once dry flip head over and scrunch again to break the mousse cast , you will have voluminous touchable conditioned soft curls that stay in place when you flip your head back over , I do not relax my hair anymore but when i did this is what i did, i have 3b and 3c hair and when i relaxed i never relaxed to the point of all the protein bonds of my hair being broken completely , i relaxed to a 2c - 3a , I guess thats what they would call a texlax or something , if you relax the protein bonds totally out of your hair this method might be a problem . you shouldn't need to relax all the texture out of your hair to flat iron it straight anyway , you shouldn't need to get rid of all the texture to maintain a flat iron job , if you dont relax all the protein bonds from your hair then it should be pretty easy to go back and forth between straight and curly . Curly just add water , conditioner . mousse and scrunch and straight flat iron . SIMPLE .

taataa._ S: that is not African american honey✌
