5 On The Farm: Give Yourself A Layered Haircut With Only One Scissor Cut

Hard to believe, but you can give yourself a great layered cut with nothing but a hair tie and a pair of scissors. Just one cut will create long, even layers.

Hi and welcome back to five on the farm today, I'm going to show you how you can give yourself a haircut yourself without even a mirror, giving yourself long layers with only one cut, and I know that sounds crazy. Apparently people have been doing this. Some women have been doing this for decades, but I just heard about it a year ago, so I thought that I would share the trick with you what you do just wash your hair, and I want to see how long my hair is right now. Last time I cut it was about a year ago, but I use this technique then you're going to want to have you're going to need at least like shoulder length hair. I would say to be able to do this very well, but all you need to do is bend upside down and pull your hair into a ponytail. I'M going to use a brush Fitness. It doesn't have to be super neat. Okay, think I got it all they're. A couple straight hairs over here and then use a hair tie to make your ponytail high up toward the top of your head. You want it toward the top of your head, not back here by tight enough now, how long you have this, where you want to cut above the rubber band and where you're cutting that's the length of the shortest hair that you're going to be cutting, and then The longer length, of course, will be a lot longer. You can kind of see you can kind of see how how the different lengths are going to be just by where that rubber band is positioned. I want fairly long lengths, so I'm going to pull mine up a little bit longer than that. That'S probably pretty good, though now one cut right here, I'm gon na go down to where the rubber band is seems. Scary. Doesn'T it look at that? We move now now you can see. I have shorter lengths here longer lengths along here. It'S just kind of like a che haircut, see how much I cut off in the back and that's going to dry it out a little bit just kind of give you the whole whole effect. Now I don't want to put hairdressers out of business or anything, but I think that looks pretty darn good. How do you? What do you think, thanks for coming back to five on the farm, see you next time,

Epic Dyslexic: I'm 3 years late and finding this video in a pandemic and just wanted to thank you, hun! I'm severely immunocompromised and disabled and have been too scared to really leave my house but am also dealing with my hair thinning and falling out due to medical issues and this hair cut is perfect. Totally hides the thinning and looks amazing and is something I can do myself in one simple cut. You have no clue just how much this 4 minute video helped a random stranger and I can't thank you enough. I hope you are doing well and are staying safe ❤

K. PacificNW: I read about this trick in Seventeen magazine about 25 years ago and have been cutting my own hair this way ever since. It comes out better than hair dressers do! I call it fake long hair; you still get the illusion of long hair in the back, even tho a lot of weight and bulk have been taken out. This technique is very forgiving with thick hair like I have; it helps so much to have layered hair. P.S.....You can even give yourself a quite short cut this way; I've done it. Just cut the ponytail off much closer to your head. Great for older ladies who need shorter layers on the top to fluff up for volume. The exact same magical thing happens; perfect short layers all around! My hair is frizzy so I then put oil based hair product of some kind, then curling iron. Soft layered curls all around. Haven't been to a stylist in years.

Lynn M.: Wow, I needed a haircut badly but my gal has her hands full with a new baby. Anyway, I wanted it layered on top and just some of the bulk out of it. You made this so simple for this 68 year old, and although my hair was shoulder length lo and behold I followed your easy tutorial, and it turned out surprisingly well! Even with an old pair of fairly dull hair cutting scissors. I must admit I did pray first! ; ) Thank you so much and I pray this finds you and yours keeping the Faith during these difficult times! You saved me about $40 dollars that I didn't have as well girl. ' ) Romans 10:13

betsy brandyberry: My hair has been down to my hips & I finally got the nerve to use your cutting techniques & just cut it! I LOVE IT & inexpensive as well..thanks for posting. I just was 58 yrs old, blonde colored hair so I did a soft L'Oreal and a homemade cut! Thanks a million!  Betsy

Shelley Maryan: I never thought of doing it like that I will give it a try thank you I've seen so many videos of different ways to cut your own hair but this is the best one so far

Donna Gray: I watched your video and actully thought about trying to cut my own hair. After a REALLY bad self hair cut when I was younger, Ive been terrified to even try again. But, I found the courage and did this cut. Im absolutely amazed at how easy it was and how my hair came out!! I love it!!

Cheryl D: I just started giving myself this same hair cut for my long thick hair. Its the first time in my life everyone has told me how much they love my hair !!! Your hair cut looks great and there is no way I will ever go back to letting anyone cut my hair again but me.

fixitrod: My wife has been on me to cut her hair and finally looked up a way to do it herself... lol. It turned out amazing!!! Thanks for posting this!!! She used two hair ties to make it a little more easily to handle (her hair was almost to her butt). Pulling the pony more forward versus back a little changes the layers completely. Great tip! Thank you!!!!!

Kathy French: Did my hair this morning LOVE IT! Thank you so much! No more hair dresser for me lol. Oh btw yours looks great!!

avon2891: so I just watched this video and hubby was working late so I did it. Yep. Just jumped right in and did it just like you showed and.... I love it! it looks really good. Thank you. :)

Ana A: Wow! At first I thought 'this woman is crazy' but then when you finished I was like 'damn, that's amazing!'  Good job, it looks great! Really, wow!  Thanks for sharing!

katchoo82: I cut my hair like this!! Well done, good job x

Barbara G: This is great.I've been wanting to layer my hair for awhile now, I will try this for sure and save money doing it :))) Thanks for sharing the video.

Lidia West: Looks fantastic! Well done. So simple but very effective. Thank you for sharing ❤️❤️

muskndusk: It's interesting to see the effect of cutting in the "fountain" (top of head) position, as opposed to the unicorn (forehead) position. Looks great.

Keri Hatgirl: My technique on the farm is to tell my husband I need my hair trimmed, I take a seat, get caped and he trims my hair. Sectioned pinned up and each section trimmed in 1/2” increments with very sharp hair shears. Keeps my ends neat and controls the splits. I like my ends blunt as it keeps my braids looking well groomed, versus straggle ends coming loose. Any method that involved putting your hair in a ponytail before cutting is going to result in uneven ends when you saw through it.

Jerilynn86: Finally, someone that cut off more than 6 centimeters. I've seen so many of these ponytail hair cutting videos, but everyone just trims their hair. I'm looking at these videos bc I wanna take off about 8inches, but haven't tried it yet bc I haven't seen anyone else do it. So thank you so much. I loved the video:)

SouthernBellePrepper: Fantastic idea! I am always looking for ways to save money and this is great! Gonna try it tonight!

Belu: I just tried this and it is exactly what I wanted!! Thank you so much! Greetings from Chile :)

kanne123A: That's amazing! You look great! I'm sure by now your hair has grown back and you've cut it again. Thank you for sharing this wonderful technique. I may get brave and try it one day.

TheCajuntransplant: You go girl! That is one handy thing to know. Thanks for sharing.

crystal r: I cut my hair like this all the time... For a more layer look info it the same exact way but do section by section and cut each section spittle bit shorter.... It comes out so nice I love it.... It comes out better if u actually dry your hair and then straighten it then cut :) great way to save money

Josie: I got brave today and cut my hair with the one cut method.... It turned out great! Then i colored it and it looks really good. Adding up the savings and time to go to a salon makes me think I will be doing this from now on...

Road to Simplicity: Whew. I am always soooooo nervous when other people try this. Glad it worked for you!!

Kathy Harris: Hey sweetheart, you are right we don’t need hair salons anymore I have never been happier, I took the challenge and did what you did and I am so happy I could jump for joy and I’m getting ready to go a little shorter thank you so very much and God bless you your friend KATHY❤️❤️❤️❤️

Road to Simplicity: OH MY GOSH, I was so nervous reading this. I'm so glad you're happy!!! I haven't been to the salon for 3 years.

ginnylouhoo: Looks great. I'm doing it today. Thanks for saving me $40!!

Satinder Kaur: O my god I have tried it and result is awesome thank you I love this

Tina Hodgkins: Thanks so much, l've always cut my sons and three daughters hair but l couldn't work out how to drop the most expensive haircut, 'mine'! at around $35 l was walking out with just the ends of my hair layered, no matter how many times l asked them to chop it. My hair is abit longer than when you started so 'thank you, thank you, thank you for your video, l've watched a few others, but yours has given my the nerve to do it, maybe cause you make it look so easy, lol, heres to an extra $35 in my pocket. =)

Angel of Retribution: Wow. Honestly. WOW. I was skeptical. I thought it would be just a parody video. However, to my surprize, it's just about as good as a salon job.

TwoBusyCrafting: I love it thanks for sharing it look beautiful :D

prm7882: Bought scissors at the dollar store a while back and do a version learned at a high end salon workshop. they brushed all the hair back, twisted and cut: nap of the neck, regular ponytail spot and high ponytail spot. same cut, but we all looked different :-) love doing this.

gemsie10: WOW you have done a great job  I may just try this myself x

mary hershelman: You can also get the opposite look by hair tying to the back....called a schlob. Stacked in the back and long in the front.

Raven Vargas: Gorgeous looks like you had it done in a salon that cut looks so damned good on you

Heather Hammond: Thanks ..I had very long hair and have tried a few of these hair cuts with the pony.. The last one i did this morning with your Instrutions. Seems it all depends on your head shape where you put the pony tail on your head... Your head must be the same shape as mine because it worked the best.. Thanks again , very happy....

Manchester Moon: Wow! you are brave.... It is amazing how we hide behind our hair and how we worry about it being cut off. Hahaha. Nice trick. Thanks for the video

Kristan Pettigrew-Youngblood: Whut did you do today hunny? Oh nothing much...just cut and blow dried my hair outside! I love it!!!!

Chris DeLuca: I think it looks great!! I have to admit, I was a little nervous for you when I first saw you cutting! lol- I need to try this.

Robby Pickett: WOW you are brave!!! I've got a shaved head but I'm sending this to my wife.

Road to Simplicity: I doubt it matters as long as your hair is smooth. It works MUCH better with the long layers!!

Road to Simplicity: Freakishly simple, isn't it!

ginnylouhoo: Love it!

voyrrr: Well, we watched your video and went right to the bathroom to find a hair band after she wet her hair down. I brushed it up and tied it.... she decided where I should cut, and I did..... and..... at first we weren't sure.... there was a moment of panic, since my wife is leaving for a business trip in the morning.... but add some brushing and the hair dryer and SHAZAM! It looks wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing this great tip. WOOHOO!! (we also live on a mountainside on our small farm and saving money is ALWAYS on our minds. Thanks again!! IT WORKS!

Lyka G: Thanks, it worked for me:)

Kathy Harris: Thank you so very much I just got through doing the same thing thanks to you God bless you. Your friend KATHY

GettnBooted: good deal...my hair not near long enuff to try that...I wear a granny bob but I hate going to the beauty shop so the last haircut I got I paid attention to what the girl did and I put the top layer of my hair up in a pebbles pony tail...lol then I cut the under stuff short and merely trimmed the upper stuff along the same lines she had and volia...I had an bob that turns under perfectly on it's own and flips up when I want that too.  I save myself 60 bucks every three months and I've had plenty of compliments on it.

Road to Simplicity: YAY!!!! Glad it worked for you!!!!!

Sweet Pea: That's how i cut mine except for I put the rubberband all way to the front, where my forehead and hair starts, so front layers are little longer than yours here in this video.

Sue S: I just cut more than a foot of hair off. You are my new best friend :)

xXxItsEmily: It looks so cool, but I'm too scared to try this myself...

Breanna Eaves: Best layered haircut video ever.

Road to Simplicity: Thanks. Not sure how short you could go and have it work. I am pretty cautious about the cuts.

Love Taiko Love Life: I love you!!! What a bonny sweet lady!! X

ruqsar khanam: i really like it ..its good saves time and money ..ur really cool (Y)

Faith-Anne Popoola: Omg amazing. I will be well upset 2 lose dat much hair (mines short) xx

courageous1974: Great helpful video, and you are very pretty too :)

SteamUP: & easy clean up too!

Janet M1954: Also if you comb your wet long part hair on each side of your face bring it to meet...then cut...it will have the tapered look when you brush it back......AND...I will throw this bonus in....wet the bangs part ....make a ' V ' (point near the crown) pull this wet part just as tight as you can on the bridge of the nose and cut ONE cut...when you let go...I makes a PERFECT...curve down the temples...try this on a doll first if you are scared....Saves alot of money getting long bangs trimed.

susan gunn: looks good !
