In this video I show you to to an easy at home tutorial on how to low light your own hair. In order to add depth, darkness deepen your existing color and and add dimension and contrast to your blonde. Here I am using a demi permanent color by color brilliance, mixed with a demi permanent developer. I explain that since we are darkening and there will be no lift, that there is no reason to use ammonia and harsh chemicals when all we want to do is lower the color. I show how to do this with a simple technique using a highlighting comb and foil. I do only four rows of foil low lights. With a simple weaving technique anyone can do. Avoiding the pieces framing the face, in order to leave them blonde to mimic that which the sun would do to the hair for a natural beautiful look. I explain that a little goes a long way when low lighting. Especially for the look here where we were going for a subtle soft low light that would aid also in toning any brass that was present in the hair. Processing time is quick. You dont need to leave it on long for you are using a demi permanent which acts fact due to the fact that it doesn't need to lift only deposit color. I left it on about 10 minutes. Checking every five minutes. You can leave it on from 10-15 minutes. Making sure not to use a color too ashy for this staying with in the neutral and warm tones. Because blonde hair will talke ashy tones more than other colors.

Okay, guys, today's video is going to be about low lighting you're already blonde hair, or I mean I guess the technique can be used for any colored hair and just I will be showing you a low lighting technique on doing it on yourself. So I'm going to again make it basic and easy for anyone to follow at home. So the reason I'm doing it today is kind of in the fall in the winter. You know if you are blonde and you want to kind of deepen the color, but you don't really want to go brown or darker. I think adding some more lights does give some dimension to the hair, a little bit of warmth or coolness. Whatever low-light you decide on and it actually because of the contrast in the dark and bright or the light blonde, I think it actually gives it kind of like a brightness to the blond because of the higher contrast in color. What I'm going to be showing you is just about like two lines of like two foils on both sides of the head, and I mean I'll just show you. What I will be using today is a demi-permanent color, because if I'm going darker, there's no need to be using such a harsh developer, that's like 10 or 20 volume. So I'm going to be using the demi-permanent creme developer and this is aged beautiful. So it it's good, for, I guess aging hair, but technically I mean is it's just means that it's more like sensitive to the hair and will make it so geared so the same with demi-permanent hair. It'S it normally leaves the hair in better condition than it actually is. So the only thing that demi-permanent hair color doesn't do is lift so brighten, but since we're going dark, there's no need to use any harsh ammonia. So I'm using ion color brilliance and I am using in eight, and so I probably I would say about a level ten in my fondest pieces and about maybe an eight and a half or nine. And so I want to bring it down a little bit to an eight and tone it. So it's a neutral so and, as we know, neutral, adding a neutral to blonde it'll actually make it a lot ash here, because it's already so bright. So I'm going to be mixing equal parts, one ounce of color and one ounce of developer. Alright. So like I said this is not a all over low light, so I'm going to be using strips and so I've. I said I wanted to do about two levels. On each side, so I'm going to start under and work my way up, obviously so that hair is not in the way I'll start on the left side, kind of do a side part and bring this hair over and with lowlights. You always want to start away from that piece of hair, that's closest to the face, so you want to leave that blonde closest to the face, because naturally that's how what the Sun would do to the hair so to grab a section of hair and where I Kind of see that there are like darker pieces, I want to try to follow that so grab that section and just weave through where you want your dark pieces. So it doesn't seem like much right now and when you see that store level I mean the poor. Like lines of soil, but it a little goes a long way, then you put your already mixed color and you don't need to add a lot. I mean if, like when bleaching, you want to completely saturate the hair, because you want it all, even and to all. Whiten, but this your home is kind of just Tony there's hair to a low light and when you're doing a bleach highlight you kind of want it like tuck in the corners and make sure that it like stays on, because also it it'll stay on a lot Longer than a low light, color will so you just fold it up and make sure that it's sealed you don't need to do the corners and then bring it back to that middle part. Grab that section coming all the way back, leaving some hair here in between that piece of oil and the next section, because then you don't want just like black piece, or I mean a dark piece on top of a dark piece. So again, we start where you kind of see that existing old low light and you kind of just weave on through pieces that you want to make darker. Then after you have your sections kind of weaved out, look at it. If you see that one is like way too blonde, and you can see that you probably don't want to turn out just take it back out like I said, a little goes a long way, so you don't want to get as much as you would when you're Normally highlighting where I would be doing the opposite: there's folding that offense and doing the same to the other side, obviously, and now you've let this develop or process for about ten minutes depending on how dark you want I'll, just be checking mine, so my may even Be ready in five minutes and then I'm going to do the the route to defuse it a little bit and then we watch out so um so, like I showed you just it kind of just did two levels in each set of lights. Of course, if you wanted to do some more you just kind of keep going, of course, there's a lot of ways of placing the low lights or in sectioning off the hair. This is, I think, the simplest way to just add some low lights and the easiest way of just separating it out the hair so process for about five minutes and chicken. Okay. So here we have the results for our our low-light and I use the a ten. The Aidan - and I just weave some pieces through, as you can see, it's very subtle, which is the look we were going for and I think it came out good. It toned out a lot of the brassiness too, which is also another reason why I liked it or I want it to do it so yeah, it's not necessarily just to go darker. I mean you don't see like these dark streaks all over so hope. This was helpful and you give it a try. Alright see you next video subscribe,

test channel for you know who: I am a 40 yr old man trying to learn how to highlight my wife’s hair. I swear I’ll never accuse her of spending too much $$$ at the salon again! DAMN YOU COVID!!!

Tammy Lele: she has to be the most talented stylist ive seen...she has this calm true nature to her character..not the "look at me"..you mostly see. This is what i want to learn from ♡

Simone T: Elle I'm a retired hairdresser & love your relaxed attitude to blonde your techniques are great & the colours you choose suit perfectly ,in fact as a blond-a-holic I am going to finally pop in some lowlights. Take Care from Australia & keep up the great tutorials. xx

Laura Devlin: I just wanted to say Thank you...I just tried this at home, I used a 7,1 ash blonde because my hair is slightly darker than yours and I did 3 levels of lowlights and it turned out beautifully! Got rid of the yellowy/orange look I had and looks really natural! I've never attempted this before and was pretty scared. I also followed your hair cut tutorial and gave myself a trim....THANK YOU! Keep the tutorials coming, you're amazing!

Mildred Ervin: Revlon ColorSilk 43 Medium Golden Brown. Section hair. No foils, no cap. Do your roots and occasionally do whole pieces. You can do full back, lower section. Twenty five minutes, rinse, condition. My old highlights look refreshened for $2.99. I do my very blonde eyebrows at the same time. Done and done! I'm going to breakfast!!

ellebangs: yes I rinse out the foiled pieces in the sink, while still semi in the foil to prevent any color fall out and any water to get to your blonde hair you dont want changed. ANother trick is putting conditioner on the blonde hair in between foil pieces. To seal and shield the hair from lowlight color. Because hair color does not penetrate through oil based products :) Good luck!

AD P: Thank you for the videos and sharing your expertise! Love your tutorials, very easy to follow. It's unfortunate that some viewers seem to have nothing but negative comments to share! (Umm, Ms. Flores... this professional hairdresser creates these fabulous videos to teach us all professional styling techniques that we can do at home to enhance our individual beauty. And she does an exceptional job explaining these styling techniques in a way that we all can understand and actually put to use. Finally, Ms. Flores, in my opinion, your negative comment must be due to your own insecurities and clearly points out your lack of intelligence...) Love the exceptional videos! Look forward to seeing more!

Courtney Tracy: You make everything look so easy, love your videos!

Christy J: Hello Elle. I have been watching you for years. Thank you so much for sharing your videos. You just make it look so easy and it is after watching you. Thank you. I do my hair much better than the salons. And you have been a big help with that for a very very long time. I've never taken the time to let you know that so I'm taking the time to do that now. :-)

Samy Rae: Thank you for this :) I just went blonde, and I'm wanting come contrast. I think I'll do this! Seems super simple :)

Kelly Anne Buckley: Thanks so much for some excellent videos. You've really increased my confidence in doing home colour. Great job xx

Mackenzie H: Well this was a throwback LOL. I'm used to her videos over the last few years but I'm actually about to lowlight my hair and came across this. Drink every time she says "um". So cute she's grown so much.

KaitlynnNicole: So helpful!  Thanks for the awesome video , not many people do it right and so glad I saw this before just going in and doing it randomly myself

Alicia Capozzi: ♡ Perfectly done. Made it seem easyish and I feel confident trying. Thank you

princesszelda: I have tried a few of your tutorials on my own hair and they always turn out good!!! Thank you for your tips! Also, you are absolutely gorgeous!

Jaja Gaborh: I’m at beauty school right now and I love your channel. Your attitude is professional and calming. Thank you for taking time of your own to put out those videos. You help me a lot

Lori Smith: QUESTION: "Do the root to diffuse it a little bit" you said right before you processed. You returned in shot hair completed (looks great) I'd like to know what 'doing the root' means? Can you explain the technique, set time etc. My hairdresser (friend) added too many for foils, my hair is now 10 level all over. I'll be doing this myself as to not hurt any feelings :) I'll be using 8N also, but obviously will need to add more rows. Thank you for posting a video such as this, allows one to do a correction ourselves.

nanikaos18: TY SO much! I recently had a cut/color FAIL & am FINALLY on my way to having cute hair again *Whew! Tues, I happened to buy the exact color you used BUT I was too chicken to do it lol I know results vary, but by watching you teach how to use the product "live", creating beautiful, natural looking, dimensions like my goal to have again, you encouraged me to try. I got excited when you mentioned your roots. Woohoo! The finishing touch I'll need! THEN you left it out. :o( Would you please explain?

annieq: This was very helpful - I like the way it was presented and your hair is gorgeous - you are too.  Thanks for taking the time to teach this technique.

Kristen P: you have saved me thousands of dollars!!! I use different products (on my naturally dark brown hair I use Garnier nutrisse LB1 to lighten it all over and then I low light it with natural instincts medium ash blonde) but your videos are so incredibly helpful on how to actually do it— thank you!!!!!

Christy Wright: Thank you so much for this. My hairdresser totally messed up my blonde hair with grey and it was so aging. Decided to DIY from your video - outcome great!

jerilee hughes: I love how she comes off very real. not like most YouTubers who sound conceited. she like listening to a friend.

opchick05: I actually followed your directions...the results turned out BEAUTIFULLY.  I'm so thrilled.  It looks like a salon did my low lights.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

LAW: Thanks sylvia! trying to let my gray come in and this will be perfect!! :) xoxo Lori

CRE Love: This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

Melanie Wall: Thanks, that was very helpful and a simple way of doing it. I can't wait to try it out :)

Gemini Fae: This video was so helpful! Exactly what I've been looking for but couldn't find!!! Thank you!

Mrs. Rhodes classroom: I have extremely fine wavy hair that’s probably around a level 7. My hair isn’t thinning but it’s so naturally fine it appears that way. I’ve tried coloring it darker and my scalp shows through even more. I followed this tutorial and used a level 6n shades eq, probably about 6 foils total and I’m blown away by how natural it looks and how effective this was at creating the illusion of fullness. It really didn’t take too many foils at all, I’m blown away by how it came out. Thank you so much for posting these tutorials are awesome

wiscowsinwoman: Thanks for sharing your techniques with us - the colors you've chosen look fantastic on you. I've been home coloring for a long time, but now going lighter with the help of my salon. I might try to eventually go back to doing some touch-ups on my own at some point, but my overall goal is lighter. Like your dimension!

fabulous fashion: I'm amazed a professional is willing to share so many great tips. I like to do my own hair so I very much appreciate the information.

djw8888: Your "after" hair looks really nice! Thank you for sharing your method. :-)

Lynn S: Excellent video, very easy to follow. Thank you!

Laura Devlin: Hi, I have a question for you. Should I lowlight my hair and then tone it or tone it first and then add the lowlights? I love your videos, you've been very helpful and informative. Thanks a lot

Jane Stern: Love your how~to insights! Is it ok to follow your low light instructions but use a complementary low light color using Clairol Root Touch Up carrying the color thru the low lights ~ it seems more user friendly for an inexperienced diy hair touch up. Any insight is appreciated!

K M: great instructional video. i also used an 8N and it came out subtle and broke my light ash blonde up perfectly. thanks!

Selena Bone: That looks great! I have grey ahro and want to add lowlights for demension. Don't want to pay a Solan price and want to do it myself. This was a super easy way to add lowlights and I hope mine turns out just as nice as your did. Just need ro figure out what color to use so it doesn't look to harsh. I have naturally dark brown hair so I'll ask for advice when I get to Sally's.

Rebecca White: Fabulous tutorial!! I'm doing my hair also but have a quick question.... I always wear a side part so should I start from it? Or still part it down the middle? Thanks a million!

Laura Dominey: Yes, I'm going to try it, thanks! And what a coincidence, I just bought 3 different colors of Age Beautiful and 8N was one of them. That's the one I'll use. Love the way your hair turned out.

lynnie rodgers: What a fab video and you make it look so easy... Thank you for sharing too... The colours at the end makes your eyes really stand out.... Glad I came across your videos this morning x

Patriot4Life: So beautiful! I love your videos. Very knowledgeable and relatable.

Susan S: Great job! Looks fantastic.

2007reb: Very helpful, thank you! Your hair is gorgeous btw !!

Sharon Stelzer: Thanks for the very helpful video. I've winged this on my own before and appreciate the chance to see a professional share her techniques. As for the rude people making fun of anything about your appearance, perhaps they would like to post a close up of their faces and we can discuss and critique. I'm sure we could provide them with some equally catty criticisms. The "ums" are a tad distracting but I haven't noticed them in your other videos. I assume you were a little distracted here, as we all are sometimes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and know that most of us really appreciate your tutorials.

whitewave68: Thank you so much for instructional video! You do such a wonderful job teaching us how to do this at home. Thank you Silvia!! You’re such a sweetheart! I just had 1 Question do you use a level 10 developer?

Amanda Andrews: Thanks. This was really helpful. I feel comfortable doing lowlights on my own.

Holly Goulart: I just found your videos and they are SO helpful. Thank you so very much!

Gia R.: Thank you for providing these DIY videos...they are so helpful! 1. Is it okay to lowlight hair when it has product in it. Or should this be done on freshly shampooed hair? 2. I have the developer you suggested for toning your hair. Can I use this developer for lowlights or should it be the developer you suggest in this video? (I don't know if there is a difference and I don't want to assume. 3. How long should I wait to tone my hair after adding lowlights? Thank you so much for your time!! : )

Deborah Perry: thank you! was trying to figure out how to add a few low lights! your hair turned out beautiful!

Jennifer Robertson: You make this look so easy. I tried it and I'm not coordinated enough to do this :(

pinqkat: Really appreciate your work, always learning something valuable from you.

Misha Deblair: I love it! Great job!❤❤

MissCharmsie: Blows my mind how people will take the time to pick you apart and then finish their comment by saying, but you're great! have more confidence in yourself etc...really?? Lol anyway, Sylvia you rock! I hope these people don't get you down, they get to me at times and my following is nowhere near yours! Keep doing your thing Xoxo

DiDeeDi: Than you so much for this video Elle!! I love to DIY videos...yours are by far my favorite!! Huge fan!! P.S. I've read some of the comments about the "ums" and I never noticed until I read the comments! Ignore these rude people!! XOXO

opchick05: I'm trying this on my next weekend off.  Thank you for the great tutorial.

Cat: You are amazing, thanks for making this!!

Lisa Manning Music: Great video, very helpful thanks! :)

Blue eyed Bandit🦋: I love how to show all the steps.

Tracey Ní Breitheamh: Wish l couldget up the courage to do my own.....you make it look so simple

Rosanna King: BEAUTIFUL!!! I'm going to try this!!!☺❤

Shawna L: I am a licensed cosmetologist. It is very possible to do a partial highlight or lowlight on your hair at home. Depending on your color level you need to watch what tones are using as going to neutral will make the hair look muddy. And also watching the width of your partings. As that video showed those were very large partings and sections. You can't just grab a big chunk of hair because it makes the color or lightener harder to penetrate through all of that hair thus leaving bleeds or hotspots.

Maryann Maisano: I loved this .. thanks   My hair is so fried right now. I think my stylist was high because its breaking and way to light..  I am going to use a dark blonde on my roots and the same color to add low lights ..  Hope this will also calm down the dryness  ..

Scott Zuke: Excellent job, thanks!

Trixxie Mullen: Thanks for the very helpful tutorial. I home colour my hair (one block blonde colour). Using tint and peroxide mix. I am considering trying lowlights I have had lowlights professionally done but find it too expensive to maintain. If I follow your instructions will this be fine on my already dyed hair? I have heard horror stories of dyed blonde hair going green when a colour is added.

Musicmaker 4HIM: Great tutorial! Thanks!

Lady Sofia Hadid: Hello silvia, I bleach my roots every 6 weeks. Three months ago I got professional low lights. Now I have bleached roots and the low lights start like 6 fingers down the root. It would be very difficult to redo the same lowlights for a DIY. I wonder if I have to eliminate the old lowlights to start again.

Angel Lucia: Took me hours to find the perfect video for adding a little brown to already bleach blonde hair, we even look alike! Thank you! Wish me luck I'm about to do this now xx LovefromEngland

Jennifer LaCosta: Trying this technique to refresh my green hair a bit, since the stores are closed where I buy my dye! Thank you!

Sis and bro forever and ever: demi permanent does actually have amonia, just not as much as permanent. it goes into the cuticle unlike semi permanent making it last longer, where permanent goes into the cortex of the hair.

brigt123: Thank you for the low light video going to try it now!

R: Hi... I stumbled across your clip while searching for info on low lighting. THANK YOU! I don't watch much on YouTube but have to say how refreshing it is to view a REAL person. I noticed there's been some rude comments made toward you. PLEASE just ignore them completely. They only want to illicit a response from you to feed their insecurity and narcissism.. they'll soon find someone else to infect with their negativity. Ignore and rise above. What they say is truly a reflection of themselves and their lack of internal fortitude, so take solace in that knowledge. And, yes.. you could pass as Lindsay Wagner's daughter! You're absolutely gorgeous. Don't change, and DO keep up the wonderfully informative clips. I'm off to try my first lowlight experiment. All the best x

GerF777: Awesome! Thanks! going to give it a try :)

AnnemieM: Your hair looks great. Thanks for the video. I color my hair blonde and I like to put some lowlights in my hair, But what happens when a month later I have to do the blonde again? will the darker strands look strange when the blonde color overlaps the darker pieces near the root. Will it bring in a 3rd color at the overlapping points?

Angelic healing ❤️‍🩹: Hi thank you for your great video how do you choose the correct colour of lowlight for your hair?

Beata L: Hi Sylvia, can you let me know what you do to your roots? How do you blend it out with your low lights? thanks! and love your channel!!!

Emmy Bacher: I can't believe you can do that on yourself. Excellent!

lisa kendall: Got it, made it look simple n easy. Thanx

ellebangs: yes in know that normally happens when you use a too dark color or too ashy.. Even a neutral (N) can be too ashy but normally only if its bellow a level7. So my advice is to keep your lo light above a level 8 and if still worried stay more with in the gold tones. Even though gold doesnt sound appealing to blondes, in this case its a good balance to making it way too ashy!

Maggie D: Do you low light the roots as well. When do we do that? :)

Bren Ten: Wow stunning, and informative.

Ashley R: Hi I’m just wondering when you are doing lowlights is it the same shade as your shadow root? Or are they two different shades? Thanks

Buckle Toy: Thanks for this tutorial! Quick question though. When you said you were going to wait about 5 mins and then do the root, what does that mean?? Please let me know because I dont want to do it wrong. Thanks

Kristin Carr: When using demi-permanent color (I bought one today you recommended in another video!), am I supposed to used a developer specifically for demi color? Or is regular developer okay?

You Tube Uploads: LOOKS GREAT..I am going to try this today

mandahoney0719: You mentioned towards the end that you diffuse your roots with the color. Did you apply it to all your roots or just the foiled roots? And how long on the roots? Thanks :)

Lady of Neener: Looks good wish you had shown doing the roots too after nightlight and how you do the dark underneath .

MindyKay: I flippin LOVE your hair!! Lol. You mentioned putting some on your roots, can I ask how long you left it on your roots for? Love your video's to pieces!!

T Brown: I have natural light blonde hair. My cut is similar to yours. I want to add low lights. How many layers should I do to achieve a nice look? Also what shade should I go?

Amy Bolinger: I am in love with your videos - very DIY with my hair these days as I rarely plan ahead and then desperately need the tresses addressed. Also, I just moved to a new area and CANNOT find a stylist that speaks the same language as me. Basically I want your hair :)

Lpg 8: I like your hair so much more like this than platinum blond.  This color really complements your skin tone and the platinum looks kind of drab, at least on my computer.

Everything Wendy: Love this, thank you! I was hoping to find a way to add some dimension to my blonde. When you said root touch up, did you just add some more 8n to the root of the sections? to help with brassiness and even it? Thanks!

GoodKarma: Beautiful girl, informative video! Thanks!

littlepixie12: This is great ... Im going to try this tomorrow! lol Can you please do a  root video? I know you mention at the end that you did your roots to diffuse the line but did you do all the roots or just the top?I know that sounds stupid but just want to make sure lol. Also you only took the roots to the regrowth right? Or did you take it to overlap a little bit of the blonde?  thanks! love your color

Katy Drew: Those tones together look cool.

TrailerParkBarbie: love it! i'm trying to achieve this color, but its hard:((((((((

G-MAN1326: Did you tone your hair before you applied the lowlights or after?

Christy Fair: Very helpful video. I can't wait to try this. I am a dirty blonde naturally at the root and have my hair too solid blonde right now. I it is a 10 right now so should my lowlights be like an 8n? Thanks!

Billee Burkhart: Wow,. That color makes your eye color pop. Love it.

Elyzsabeth Ahne: Please, just curious--can someone lowlighting at home use ammonia-free permanent color instead of demipermanent color? Thanks in advance.

Susan R: Thank you VERY helpful

T MacD: Thank you, very helpful
