Hi Sam, via here with Andrew Carruthers and today, what we want to do Andrew is: we want to talk about a flatiron, a tool, that's so used in the salon, but sometimes it's those little tricks and tips that can really save you some time with a flatter. Yeah and absolutely there's, there's so many ways to use it. That'S really what I want to share with you. So let's set you up with the tools for success. First and foremost, the Sam be a sleeker iron, we're using this one because of the rounded plates and the even tension because of the floating plates. So a really important tool we're going to prep the hair with red khun's iron, shape eleven really important product, because we have a hold factor of eleven. That'S going to give a nice hold without being overly sticky, and it has heat protection which is essential for this. We'Re going to going to also be using red kings, movability, zero, five, great products, love in that product. It'S is it's so flexible and there's so many ways you can use it and i'm actually interested to see how you apply this doing. Watching my friend and, of course, the ever-popular red can shine flash zero to one of our favorite shine products because of its lightweight feel but intense shine, and of course you got ta have one of these Sammy got. It has some clips alright Andrew. So, let's start out my friend with a large comb, I'll start there and here's what we're gon na do we're going to go through we're going to take a section now. I just want to show you how to do the technique. It'S called a flat wave, really cool, but let's make it look more of a finger wave. If you will, I never was good at finger way so Andrew I had to figure out how to do a finger wave. Never could do them in school to save my life and I really wish I would have learned how to do them, but now we've discovered ways to do things so, okay, so what we want to do, let's give you a visual of this and, on the top Section here, so I'm just going to take a top section, we're just going to put a wave into this, so think about a wave. It'S an S pattern, that's how it works. An S pattern first thing we're going to do. Is we're going to take our product of choice, our iron shape eleven minimum six inches away spraying, both bottom and top? Remember it is a heat protector, not an option, a necessity, especially when you're working with thermal tools. Okay, now think about the undulation. You want to create so I'm going to go through I'm going to create the undulation where it's going back and away from the head. First, so think about that and just carve it in so I'm just going to come in and I'm just going to scissor the section, and I just push it into the shape that I want. So I want that reach for the flat iron and I'm going to actually just heat that undulation in okay, so that undulation is there. Okay, then what I'm going to do next is I'm going to reach for a clip. So all I want to do is just tap tap. Tap, tap, tap, tap member heats our best friend as long as we're in control. Now, once I've got that the next thing I'm going to do is just take that and you're just going to clip that there. So that's your first undulation now we're going to come back the opposite way once again, just a little mist of iron shape, 11 coming back the opposite way and notice. My scissor actually just spreads that hair put your next undulation in, come in with your flat iron and then just tap tap tap tap tap, so all you're doing is you're just working down the section. Keep your undulation about the same and keep it even just a great way once again, simple way to create some ways I'll take a clip again. Andrew now watch me point into the sea curvature of the S formation. That'S where my clip goes now. I come back through and I scissor back the opposite way and I just kind of flatten that section out little miss once again. Just iron shape 11 come back through with your flat iron and just tap your formation in, and this is what's so great about this trick - is that you're able to see the formation immediately once you get it in, but you what's really cool. I think, and you a lot of times what we forget is we allow we don't let things cool down by using the clips and just section you just pin it in as you go, it's really going to cool. It was one of the things that Geneva Callen who's. Our our artistic director taught me is that it actually takes about 20 minutes for those bonds to completely cool inside the hair and truly form. So when your guests are coming and saying you know, I tried that iron technique that you showed me the other day, but it didn't stay in my hair honestly, nine times out of ten asked them this. How long did you let the form cool before you put your hands in because usually what they're doing is they're doing their technique? They get this perfect curl and then they do this. Don'T they say? Yes, they do immediately and I think that's the one thing. One of the principles that we tend to forget remember: there's heat compression if you're using a flat iron as a now here's my compression heat, compression and cooling. I think the third principle cooling is of 10:1. We tend to forget about because it's all based about time. You know we think that would because we're such in a hurry. We tend to speed up. But when you speed up what happens, is you tend to lose it and that's when people tend to say well, my hair doesn't hold a curl. It won't seem to hold it's just all the way that you're working with it. So now, Andrew I'm on that last section and then what I like to do guys is that on the ends anytime, you got layers on anytime. You do this and you might let's say you have layers. All I want you to do is come in with the iron go in vertically, because it's rounded the way it is see. I just went in and I just come in and I just go into it vertically and just give that a little bit more of a curl on the end of that now remember what Andrew said it's about allowing that to cool. So we allow that to cool and then when you go through once you allow that all to cool you take this out and when you take this out, you've got a beautiful wave pattern. You can put the sea formations as close as you want, or leave them as far away as you want, there's a trick that we do or we actually just kind of, let it feed into the iron. So you get this really cool kind of like a beachy wave, a beachy curl to it. You can actually use this as an accessory, just a dress hair when you're dressing. Here let's say you do an up style and you just want to go through and just pin that in so just a really cool way to work with a flat iron using some Clips iron shape 11 and just form the undulation that you want to form in Yeah another way that you can use this is actually as a curling iron, because we've created this with a rounded outer surface and rounded plates internally, you can get actual curls and circles. There'S a couple ways you know about this. Really. What we want to do is again we're always going to start with our iron shape, 11 to prep the hair and right here on the front hairline. What we probably don't want is we don't want her to look like Little Orphan Annie, so we're going to do this first section with a very gentle curl and it's all about basically the technique of how much you're actually twisting the iron and how much heat you're. Putting on it because that's going to affect your curl as well, so we're going to start with the iron open the plates down, we're going to take it around the hair and then we're going to curl the hair around one half turn. I'M going to start to move, create compression and work down to the ends. Now, as we do that again, the cooling process is really important, so we want to make sure that we wind it together and let it form how we want it to form so we'll. Let that sit and cool see that one more time Andrew on a section, because what I love about it is how it's so now. It has a sense of laziness too. It'S not so fresh in terms of working with a flat iron. I think I find when I work with a curling iron, it's too defined and for me that's too vintage. Looking now what I mean by vintage, obviously old - I don't know about you, but I don't know anybody that woke up this morning and said. I want to look old, so it's about up to you, teaching them how to update these various things, especially someone that curls, our hair all the time so once again Andrew. How do we do that? Alright? So again I like taking vertical sections when I won a leaner kind of curl, because you know, as we know, those vertical sections will keep things leaner. If I wanted more body at the base, then I could go in with more of a horizontal section start. My chrome farther towards the base, so that's another option. What I love about that too, that probably give you a little bit more lift at the base. Yes, absolutely cool and a lot of modern shapes don't have a ton of lift at the base. Have you noticed that the fullness is more through the side, it's very alien than it is mom, getting very a line right now. I think lush skirts are getting very a line right, very kind of like they kind of flutter out, not so much pin pencil skirts. Yes, anyway, all right, so an open iron plates down. We place it over the hair and we turn the hair a half a turn and turn the iron a half a turn. Now we start to move and then compress nice slowly out through those mids. You can rush a little bit more through those ends, because those ends don't need quite as much heat as those mids do we're going to curl that up and let it cool into place there. Now this guy's cool up front, so I can show you what that looks like if we pull that out, it just has a really light kind of movement to it. Now you know these ends. They curled a little too much because I want to slow thrown. So what can we do? We can stretch it out and just give it a little tap. What'S so great, as you can see, just the simple use of heat you can control what it is that you're working right and I think, that's what's cool about using a flat iron in a different way. Is that really what creates these curls? What creates smoothness? What creates volume is heat and tension right. So can you use multiple different tools? I know a lot of you probably work flat ironing hair before they were flat irons, you were using a curling iron to do it. You'Re just grabbing the hair and moving through it. Now guess what this is the modern tool that gives you a lot of different options, so I imagine this Andrew a tool that a client can actually go in and use as a flat iron and a curling iron. So there's anything you want to retail it's a SAM via flat iron, a Sambia sleeker because they can use it as both. So, let's go through now and let me share with you how you can take the same technique that I did over here with a flat wave but make it have a little bit more of sense of explosion to it. So obviously, the smaller something is the more explosion. That'S going to add to it once again, working with my iron shape, 11 coming through always combing the product through once we're there. Now we come through with a flat iron now watch what we're going to do. Take your flat iron and tilt your flat iron diagonally to the ceiling. Then all I want you to do is just push so I'm just pull pull pull. Now I put the next undulation in now. What I'm doing is I'm letting them sink in and I just tap each one that were there I'm there when I tilt your head over to your left, shoulder please Ashley your left, shoulder that a girl a little bit more to your left, shoulder good. So once you get a little top view on that now watch how I just come in. I just push the next undulation in I come in. I go the opposite direction with the undulation okay. I come back in opposite direction, so I just keep tapping that in and letting that fall into the iron, so now watch I'll get much more of a casual type of wave and a little bit more casual type of curl. With that, when you work with that, now, look at that one that one has more explosion away from the head as this one's a little bit more flat when you finger through these they're amazing. In terms of that they're very organic, looking, which I really believe, is a trend that the industry is leading more towards more organic and simplexity simple, but yet looks complex at the same time. Love it anything to add my friend on a on a flat iron. You know there's so many different things and we've actually published quite a few videos on different techniques with this iron, so go to our YouTube page youtube.com, backslash, Sam via hair and you're, going to find tons and tons of additional techniques using this sleeker iron. Robert Thompson: Thank you and your Team Sam for always sharing something fantastic!!!

David Campbell: I love your techniques and methods of using the flat iron. I respect and love a lot of Sam's message in this tutorial but there's one area that I disagree with and that's creating curls. As an educator one of the areas that I found to be lacking in our industry is the proper use of a standard curling iron, " click, rotate and control ". Even though it produces a vintage result I see young hair artist trying to produce base curls with a flat iron, it doesn't work and a shame that there interest is relied on a flat iron and not curling irons. Flat irons are good but let's not loose the fundamentals of true artistry.

Anita Lemel: Sam, you ' are doing a fantastic job sharring your knowledge and experiences. I ' m learned a lot from your movies, and every next time you making me surprise by your way of technical job. Never stopping.!! Warm greetings from Poland :)

TA L.: Sam, I love finger waves....the look of them on hair....I, like you, didn't enjoy learning them at school!  Thanks for the different techniques for accomplishing the same results with a modern twist.  So going to do this on my mannequin at the Salon today...to showcase the look.....see if one of my clients is interested. XO

Gary Harden: I also love using the tapered curling iron! So the curls get tighter at the bottom

Bonnie Miller: Sam Villa You are an amazing artist. You have taught me so much. I really appreciate your videos. Thank You.

Hayley Viljoen: You are always coming up with such inventive ideas. Which stimulates hairdressers to be more inventive with the guests in the chair I love it.

Chantelle Napier: love the first finger wave technique. I was rubbish at college with these too. gonna have a go on the block tomorrow. x

Lexi Hay: Can you show us how to use a 1-1/2" round curling iron on long hair to produce long curls without creating a lot of volume? Voluminous hair is not flattering on my smaller frame. Also, I don't have a lot of time to get ready, so I need to use heat to tame my naturally thick and curly hair into something more sleek and pretty. I will post a pic of my hair just after it was done at the salon on Instagram. (For reference). I just can't seem to master the technique. Thank you! (Instagram name= "minibux") :)

MsSw33thart: Enjoyed all 3 techniques... I will be using them!!!! Very educational

Maria Flores: Thank you! for taking your time to teach us the newest on the business.

So she says: I like that flat iron wave but the finger wave is Absolutely amazing!!!

Megan McMullen: I'm no professional, but I watch your channel to learn about hair styles. I love the idea about using the hair straightener as a curling iron. After curling your hair with a straightener, can you go in and use hair spray to hold the hair in place? If so, what's a good hair spray for super thick hair?

Robert Petsche: You're video quality and techniques are inspiring. Would like to see a head sheet for added visual benefits.
