Hi everyone I'm Andrew Carruthers for Sandia. I want to share with you some tips that we've developed on how to create more visual interest in your long haired guests. I know a lot of you guys have Barbies and Playboy Bunnies as your clientele that just have long thick gorgeous hair and it's really challenging to get dimension into that hair a lot of times. So here's some cool tips on how to get that dimension. One of the things that I know I got scared of, especially after the late 90s and early 2000s, was creating too much short stuff on the upper surface of the head. Guess what prediction for 2014 from us? I think we're gon na start seeing this stuff fluff up again. So what I'm gon na show you is how to control that, how to actually add that into the haircut and control it in a way that doesn't feel 90s, but gives you it's fresh dimension to your long hair. What I'm gon na do is I'm gon na. Take some vertical pie shaped sections on this upper surface and, as I do this, what I'm gon na do is I'm gon na make sure that whatever is left out has a strong enough baseline for me that lets say just for giggles I shaved this whole thing Out which she still have a perimeter. Well, as I look at that yeah, she would so. I know that I have a safety buffer in there almost regardless of what I do up here. I'M not gon na completely destroy the density of the perimeter and that's one of the key factors that our guests always ask for is I don't want my ends to feel thin. You guys have heard that I know you have so what I'm gon na do with this pie shaped section: is I'm gon na bring it up and I'm gon na cut a strong inverted line, a really strong diagonal line from shorts along this way, and the reason I'M going to do that is I want my shortest point to be right at the part line, I'm using the 7 inch dry cutting shear, because when I'm working on this dry hair like this, what happens a lot of times if I'm using a smaller, lighter weight? Wet cuttings, all of that hair tends to push out of the scissor. The design of this scissor is to make sure that it traps the hair and actually cuts that thicker heavier dry hair. So it's a really important tool for this type of work. So you can already start to see them getting some visual interest in some movement right there yeah that's going to be cool, so what I'm gon na do is I'm going to take just a little piece of that and I'm gon na create my next pie-shaped parting And I'm always coming from that part now these don't have to be perfect as far as how far they come down it's more. What does it need in that area? So again, I'm gon na pull that out and make sure that I have plenty of density on those ends. I feel good about that. So I'm gon na elevate this up. It'S probably better for you guys to see it from this direction and it elevate that up and now what I have is. I do have a little guide for length over here in this corner. You guys see that if I've memorized what my diagonal line is up here with my fingers, I don't need a guide from this for this point, because I have my guide here and I have the same diagonal line here. I can trust that and, as Sammy likes to say, just cut the darn thing, so you can start to see I'm getting a lot more. Visual texture aren't I now. This is what we can get is more dimension from the hair, even though I still have strength and density in the ends, and the only way I'm going to do that is being willing to detach the hair as a detached over cut. We'Ve done plenty of detached under cuts now we're getting into detached over cuts. So let me show you one more section here, as I come into the back. What I want to do is I don't want one down the center and then two beside it. I think that looks too trite, so I'm going to keep them a little offset comb that out of the way come down into that point. I can come a little bit lower since I'm in the back of the head. I'Ve got more room to play. I'M gon na lift that up one more time make sure I have the density on eight. I need here. I feel good with it pick up a little piece from my previously cut section there at the the part line, get that same diagonal line with my fingers and cut. I love that her layers were so long because we're really able to see a pretty dramatic transformation from before-and-after and what I'm gon na do is I'm gon na spin her around? So you can see what it looks like from this side and then, as I spin her around, you can see how much more dimension I have there versus this side. So I bet you're wondering now. How do I work into this side and that's a really great question? Thank you. So what we're going to do is we're going to do the exact same thing with a little bit of a mindset shift now. This is the weak side of the hair. She'S got a really far deep side, part which a lot of our young young clientele are wearing right. Now, I'm going to continue with those pie-shaped sections now why? Up? If you look at a pie, shaped section whit's at the top skinny at the bottom, I'm effecting the hair towards the bottom, much less than I'm effecting the hair at the upper surface. Where do we want the visual texture on the upper surface? So I could put. I put the wide part of your pie shape here on the top. What if I flipped it upside down? You'Re gon na take a lot more density out of the perimeter and the layers are going to dissipate much quicker at the top. I challenge you to grab a doll head, try it out, so I take that pie shape section elevate up. I still have that little guide in here from the other side, and I get that same diagonal line with my fingers and I work out now. I'M still in this area of the head that has a lot of density because it is living more in the back on the other side. This is the part that it gets a little trickier because there's so much less hair right here. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take that same pie, shape section it's going to be a much more shallow section, I'm not going to go nearly as far down into the hairline, because I need more density, but the challenge with these types of Haircuts a lot of times with the farside parts is it's almost like. We have nothing on this side with all of this texture on this side. So this is a great way to address this. You can see I've parted it not as far down. So I leave the density here, I'm again going to bring up that diagonal that I've traveled all the way through the haircut straight up to the ceiling, get my diagonal. What I'm gon na do is I'm actually going to twist my fingers just slightly more so I leave just a hair, more density on this outside you can see I'm almost vertical and then I'm gon na cut that away. So what that does is it gives me that little pop of that texture right there in that corner, so on the front it doesn't look so unbalanced. It doesn't look like hey. I'Ve got lots of cool texture over here, but then it's naked on this side. I still have this pop of texture to show up on that shallow side. So again, guys work with these pie shaped sections, and you know we really challenge you everything we do get creative, try it in a different way on a mannequin head at home and just see what happens see what result you get, but we're challenging you now to Shift our thinking away from the fear of these shorter layers on the upper surface and start bringing back these awesome, textures your Playboy Bunnies and your buxom blondes and all we've women with great long hair, they're gon na love you for adding fresh new dimension to this Long hair guys, thank you so much for watching I'm Andrew Carruthers for Sam via you,

ProvocatuerBarbie25: Bravo Andrew, you are well spoken, a great communicator, and really made it easy as pie

Abrakadeborah M.: Love it, love it! I'm glad you are teaching this to others...I have always cut in extreme angles and left the fullness on the bottom portions and I over direct in the front to leave the weight/volume in the sides.

Elena Haldy: I love this.I love shorter layers too and this adds beautiful texture without compromising the weight at the perimeter.I am going to try this.Thank you Andrew!!!

immadomenow: Great job! Gotta try this. But BIG QUESTION: how would we keep it from looking like it needs to be blended with the remaining bottom layered hair? I find this to be my biggest challenge with longer hair clients that want the layers and texture but getting it to look blended and not choppy..have lines or noticeable disconnections. An advice? Thanks for sharing you guys are fantastic.

Adrian Rami: I got this don and its fantastic ! Thank you for really explaining how ! You are doing a great service to everyone that sits in a chair and try's to explain to the hair dresser what they want A+

Mary Morgan: Amazing. I had been taking out straight sections of hair. I love the pie shape to keep the length near the mid and end parts of the head. Her hair looks great and is a fresh take on a classic. Does not look like a mullet at all. Thanks so much for sharing You communicate and show visuals so well.

dee Carlo: I wish you show on each video the final look. Turn around the client, show the style.

JodiMSmith: This is a massive confidence boost for all stylist. Thank you Andrew x

Josiane Guay: GREAT educational video! My hair is kind of fine, but I want some movement in it because otherwise its flat! This is a genius way to do it without compromising its thickness. THANK YOU !!! -X-

Mary Hansen: Love it! I love that you sound like Drew Scott from Property Brothers! Home sheltering--gaining knowledge in hairshaping and filling a little of the HGTV void I can only enjoy at the gym, from the comfort of my purple sofa in my terry cloth robe! Thanks a million. I am looking forward to employing this cut and stopping obsessing about blending everything. Love the pie shapes and the disconnects! Liberating!

C: This stylist knows what he's talking about. Made my hair look and feel like a dream. Thank you!

Helen Bagheri: I really can't find the words that are good enough to describe how fantastic this video is. Thank you so much guys, I really enjoyed watching it :)

Moki Montanez: Looks amazing! I'm going to practice this technique. Thank you

Xoxomimi22xoxo: You are such an amazing stylist I really enjoy your videos, and your fun personality . I look forward to watching more:)

Sergio Basconcelo: Hermoso, me encantó la técnica muy sencilla y bella.

amy24ro: Hello, could you please also tell us how the hair coloring done for the model? Or the name of the technique used? Or post a video for creating movement and depth by using 2 colors (one lighter, one darker) but not necessarily with the ombre or balayage techniques? For example the model seems to have light highlights, darker hair underneath and it just looks different than what I've seen so far

GabriElle 504Singer: Absolutely LOVE this technique!

Fashionwork12: great technique im just wondering: since your cutting such a severe amount of hair off to connect the interior to your guideline point in the crown, how will the hair lay since its not being blended in through the bottom

SOLAR POWER FOR THE POOR !: Best layering video Ive ever seen,LOVE it! Thank You so much.

Aprill Roberts: Well explained & demonstrated. Thanks for sharing.

helenbeauty2009: Couldn't be better, you are a great teacher thank you for share, awesome.

Kimberly F: Great technique! Thanks for sharing!

57mobird: I just received this in my email today, and then Andrew said it was for 2014. But I don't mind that it's 5 yrs. old, because it's such a great technique. Thanks!

aryam: Excellent! Thank you. Will show this to my hair dresser.

Vero Sol: I just did my friends haircut . She wanted short layers and still have her length! It was a little challenging !!! But with this technique seems to be easer!! Thank you!

Amelia: I just recently found you on here and I love watching your videos especially the haircuts and the texture iron super cool! I don't like this technique and some others because it's too much guess work. I can see these kinds of cuts on some women that need that volume at the top, whats killing me why not just make a guide where her part is I mean she probably isn't going to move it to the other side. All the haircuts are dry... maybe you could also mention what products to use while your cutting hair I'm new to Redken products so I don't know much PM I'm good with.

Daisy123427: Great video and amazing tip. thank you. but just one question, I have really long hair curly hair. I love it but I feel I need to do something to it (apart from standard layers at the fronts) to give it a little more character. but Im really scared of it frizzing/collecting up. would this technique be safe to use on wavy to curly hair without looking like a poodle? how? thnks in advance.

Tarasaurus: I've always wanted a style like this for my long hair (about the middle of my back). To have layers kinda like this, but not loose the actual length of my hair. But I'm afraid this wouldn't work for my hair type. Would this still work for frizzy, wavy, pretty thick hair, or would it just make it kinda like a bigger poof ball? Any help would be appreciated

Shazvana: Great job Andrew, love your style:)

Sam StyleAndCosmetics: that was great, really interesting and great results, perfect.

Yaneth Arambula: Omg i just love the look !!! Well i don't really trust my hair to any one here in town so, I just did it to my hair by mi self and the result are amassing I just love how my hair looks .... Thank you

Angelica Bcruz: You did an awesome job! By thy way I love her hair color.

Ms_PG: Love this!! Thankyou!

Emilya Gerson: A before and after comparison photos would have been great x

Jessica Preston: I love this cut! My problem is how to ask your client if they'd be interested in a disconnect, I feel like most clients would say no even though its an awesome look!

Balwinder Jhamat: I have no words to appreciate to ur skill sir.i can only say I u r beyond perfection.i love long hair with volume but nobody did it for me.now I will show this video to hair stylist and try to get same volume with long hair.thanks a lot from .

missSINGINGISMYLIFE: what do you do about the ladies who have hair down their back, dont want any length off, but want layers up to their cheekbones? i always find length coming off the perimeter. or i end up seeing (on celebs) where it looks like there arnt any layers on the bottom (but there is at the top) at all bc its so long

315clau: This is exactly what I need, my hair is so heavy, but nobody seems to understand me, and that finish with a short layer

Brenda lomeli: i will show this vid to my little sis.whos graduating from cosmo  and high school.THANK U .GOD BLESS !!!

Hope Laird: Basically, you rock!

Shirley Hernandez: "Just CUT the DARN thing!!!" lol..that was soo meant for me!! Thanks:)

pamperu: I have a question. Is this technique will work in long but skinny hair?. I have my hair in lawyers but I would like to have sort layers at the back so it looks more thicker and fun hair. Should I work on shallow pies all around my hair because of the skinny hair?. I usually cut my hair by myself cause my stylist left town. Thank you!

Volanthius Klein: Awesome!

Валерия Пушкина: more works from Andrew!))

rachel lemieux: wish you would have shown a final close up.

dersebastian26: Great! Thx

Valeriee Araujo: Wow is there any way possible you can have a tutorial on how to get her hair color???!? Please please please(((: I love her hair

chrisg45: LOL, when he mentioned the 90s, & layered hairstyles, I wonder if he was referring to 'the Rachel' hairstyle. Though that was more like mid 90s, if I remember correctly. LOL I had that hairstyle, it was a cute hairstyle for the time, but a real big pain in the butt to style! But I know what he's saying-I'm always afraid to get layers all over because yeah, sometimes it looks thin towards the bottom, or I hate it when you can almost see what I'd describe as like a 'shelf' in the back, if you can picture what I'm trying to describe.

Leny Morris: Amazing

Charlye'Charleston: Please show how it looks after you've styled it a bit!

Kaj Te Briga: looks great

omaha nebraska: what's the color formulation on the model?

GIOVANNA PG.: SAM, ERES LO MAXIMOOOOOOO, SALUDOS DESDE PERU

Charak: "They don't want their ends to feel thin"   * chop inches off the thickness *

kusina koto: your awesome .... love it ...

Ercan DURAN: farklı modeller deneyin evde diyor ama denemedikleri bişey yok sanki ben bulamıyorum ki evde manken üzerinde denemek için
