In this video, Sam demonstrates how to curl your hair to create a loose wave or a loose curl using a marcel iron. Use this technique to create the illusion of natural waves in the hair.

Hi, my friends, here's a great question from Tiffany: how do you make that loose textured wave on long hair? Well, let's talk about how do you make a wave on long hair and how is it loose? How is it textured? That'S all going to be a matter of preference in terms of personality. So let's talk about a wave. Just simply want you to take a section. Okay and now I want you really remember, parks, it's not an option, it's a necessity, so I'm going in with redken spray starts. 15 love this any time. I pick up a thermal tool: okay, always going through and spraying at least a minimum of a 6 inches away. So I'm going to go in and spray I'm gon na spray, both on top and bottom. Okay, once we've sprayed that through going to encourage you to comb that through now, I'm gon na take just a smaller section here for you now. Here'S what I want you to watch the technique of this in terms of how we're going to establish a wave when it come through pick up your iron. No, I really want to understand my friends. Marcel is a professional iron. That'S important! Please put the spring activated iron down: that's for the consumer, add value behind the chair and ask yourself: what's the difference of the tool you're using compared to what the consumer is using, especially when it comes to a curling iron, you're gon na be able to do A lot more tricks with a Marcel here we go take the iron cord goes around. Your elbow client is facing the mirror in the salon. I'Ve, given you a 3/4 view here on this, so that you can see this, but you will be facing away she's facing the mirror you face away when you're on the right side. They had the iron goes in your right hand, so we simply come through. Iron. Goes in now, I want you to start right here. Look how close my thumb and index finger are up to the barrel of the iron, so you start up close to the barrel of the iron. I want you to turn your pulse. Read your pulse now turn and look at your time now simply slide your thumb and index finger down and around the barrel back up through in between your blade and your barrel, back to a pulse position, position slide and wrap back up to a pulse position. Pulse time, slide, wrap pulse time, slide, wrap now three principles to an iron Heat tension and cooling Heat. It'S working tension watch this now turn and drop your elbow. So now, what I'm doing is I'm getting more tension in that section, that's critical, really critical. Allow your iron to work notice that I haven't closed the blade. I don't want to close the blade, because if I close the blade, I might get a crease mark. Okay, allow that to bake now watch what I'm gon na do. I'M gon na take just my index finger my middle finger right over that and just feel the temperature of that. Once my the heat start, my fingers getting hot okay once it my finger is really getting hot, but what it's important is you measure the temperature? Okay, now, once I'm there, with the temperature, come back up to this position that you started now, the important thing is here: don't let the wave or the curl drop? I want you to hold here, bring the palm of your hand underneath and catch that look, how I've been able to catch. That what's important is this once you catch that, don't let it drop hold on to it. Okay, then I want you to come through and compress that now what I'm doing is allowing that to cool that's important, allow it to cool relax, be patient when you're working with heat. I want you to remember my friends heat. Is your best friend now watch? What'S going to happen, we're gon na release this now, when I release that look at what I get you're gon na get this type of curl. But what's really important is when I wrapped it, we were using two types of wrap, a spiral and a flat wrap. So when I was reading my poles and then I went to my time that created the spiral when I slid down, that was my flat wrap. So you looked closely at the iron you'll see it had a spiral on top and underneath the iron it was flat. Come through take the white teeth of your comb, come through comb through that hold on to that just to relax a little bit and then release and you get more of a wave. So this is your crest. Here'S, your valley, there's your crest and your valley. Now, Sam, how would i texturize that? Well, my suggestion would be come through with the texture iron hit it with the texture iron for then go in and do your wave now, here's another one. I want to give you. This is really really important. Let'S go through. Take this hair out of the way. Let'S say you wanted something that had a little bit more sense of looseness to it. Okay, now watch what I'm gon na do: you're gon na come again with your iron, so we're gon na come through with the iron we're gon na, come through with the iron and now watch, I'm gon na. Do I'm gon na flat, wrap it, keep it nice and flat and flat wrap and I'm gon na roll and close okay, allow that to bake relax. Remember Heat's your best friend measure these measure, your temperature, with your finger once you feel that temperature, coming through with your finger, you're, ready to move to your next position, keep it nice and flat slide the barrel of the iron out. Now. Look where the blade is, the blade is on the front side simply take it out turn the iron over. Now, the blade is on the opposite side, come through roll and clamp and now open. Can you see I rolled it? One direction I rolled it: the opposite direction. Now I'm gon na allow that to bake. This is going to give you a little bit more of a lazy, textured, curl or lazy. Textured wave love it. I prefer to call this a lazy curl. What I showed you before was more of a wave, so how do you create it more textured make sure after you're done start to work through these with your hands? Don'T work with a brush now watch once that's baked. Look where the barrels look, where the blades at turn it back over clamp where you left off and go the opposite direction, and when you go that opposite direction, what's cool is you're gon na get this really kind of trick of the undulation? The wave is the curl is going to go one direction and then it goes the opposite direction. The means to creating today's ends. Leave it out. Please leave it out, let's not make our looks, look so quaffed and so perfect, Crofton perfect to me it's vintage. Looking now, what's vintage looking mean? Oh, that's right, it means old. Now I don't know about you, but I don't know anybody that woke up this morning and said I want to look old, it's all about doing things in a different way. So now watch when I release this one look at the undulation I get out of that one as a last of what I got is the undulation I got in the last one and then once again work with these with your fingers and just come through. So I've, given you two ways, so you can go in and you can work with something that gives you a little bit more laziness, something that gives you a little bit more texture, type of curl texture, type of way. Hope that helps you out and answers. Your question, and thanks for the question, see you soon. You

Ruby Barrera: Sam just need to let you know that most hairstylists really appreciate you……..I really dislike reading negative comments when you have done so much good for our industry. Thank you for sharing your knowledge

Sarah Naftaoui: Sam, my mother is a beautician & she loves you're videos. She only buys your products no matter what. She even gives people overseas your website to get to know you and buy the wonderful products you have. You inspire her to become a better beautician. She says you should keep up the amazing work :)

megalopolis2015: This is great. I like how you work with curling and wave styles and give them an edge. I do love some old-fashioned looks, too, AKA Vintage. Someone can look classic and timeless without looking ancient. Part of it has to do with intent, as well as accessories, makeup, all sorts of variables. I am a firm believer in hairstyles and all the rest reflecting personality, rather than temporary trends. Thank you for showing us your marvelous techniques to give us even more ideas and options.

GenX73: Thank You for this!! I love the way you explain every step. I'm going to a wedding Saturday and will be using your "pulse & time" technique. Still I wish I could go to in person to get my hair done by you. Thanks again for the lessons!

Chury Hernandez: The whole point of using a Marcel iron vs. a wand is that 1. It's a professional tool 2. The avg. Consumer can try to do what we do but will never be able too therefore 3. Using a wand is the lazy way out. & just because he's doing it slow in the video doesn't mean It's going to take home 5 hrs doing those curls. I'm pretty sure he'll still be done before you. BOOM!
