If you’ve got short hair we doubt you’ve ever even considered this a problem but soaking your hair in chlorine every time you want to do some water-based activity is far from ideal. So much so that this puts a lot of people off swimming altogether.

Having a swimming hat line, red rings around your eyes and wearing a distinct Eau de chlorine scent is bad enough but heading from the pool with wet bedraggled hair isn’t a great look. We know a lot of friends who even time their swims around hair washing days but this does limit you somewhat.

We do start with a disclaimer, as we begin making this video, we genuinely don’t know how to keep our hair dry whilst swimming but by the end of this we are determined to find a solution so get ready to have a few giggles but ultimately hopefully we’ll all learn how you can enjoy your next swim whenever you like without the worry of factoring in hair drying time.

If you enjoyed this video, make sure to give it a thumbs up and share it with your friends.

If you've got short hair, I doubt you've even considered this a problem, but first us a long hair. Every time you go for a swim, soaking it in chlorinated water is far from ideal, so much so that actually puts quite a lot of swimmers off and it's bad enough getting out of the pool with red rings around your eyes, a hat line and that distinct Odour of chlorine, but leaving in a wet bedraggled look is enough to actually make some people time there swims for days. I need to wash the hair, which can be pretty limiting, so today I'm going to be doing a little bit of an experiment, and I want to start it with a disclaimer cuz. This is genuine and I haven't yet worked out how to keep my hair dry when swimming, but I've got several ideas which I'm going to try out so hopefully, by the end of this, we will have a solution to be able to go swimming and keep our Hair dry. Well, I guess I should probably start with a bit of a control. So while my hair is dry, I'm just gon na put my hats on, like I would normally attire up in a bit of a bun check, my hat on and go for a swim and I'll show you what it looks like at the end of it. Okay, I've done a decent swim, so it's time for the swimming cap reveal, for the control run, see what we're working with pretty wet cap. I'M imagining my hair is gon na be soaked through. Let'S have a look yeah, I would say that is pretty wet. Have a ring that I've got a good starting point, at least well, like I said earlier today, is a bit of an experiment and both from what I've been told from my little play on Instagram and things I found online, I have gone out and bought this Selection of swim caps, obviously of all you had these two GT end caps. I'Ve got a really expensive joking. It a free shower cap from the hotel to try out this little nylon, a virgin cap here, and then this one, which is something very new to me. With the ear protector and the hope that that's going to seal right around the edge, but there are so many different options out there. This one is great if you've got really long. Hair, apparently, which my hair is relatively long and there's quite a lot of it. So hopefully it should be able to fit everything else, underneath I'm gon na try a selection of sometimes the caps on their own, trying different hair styles underneath and a combination of various options here, all right, my hair is entirely dry, so I probably need to get Back in the full this time, I'm going to keep it fairly simple, but change things up slightly. So a lot of the suggestions were high, bun, which I normally don't do and put my hair at the back. Maybe that's just because I think it's more Aero offices less drag so we're gon na put it nice and tight, but right on the top of my head. So just twisting it like. I did before really tight. So I keep it in place and B to reduce the surface area. That'S potentially exposed to the water nice I'll hair bubble again, keeping it in place like a ballerina, I'm sure they're low, like one and now let me introduce this special cat, so I bought this after my research. I'Ve never tried one of these before, as you can see, there's a little extra bit for the ear, which means the Hat should be r2 still nicely around my ear, because that's normally where the water goes in. It'S also a hat designed people with a lot of hair and yes, my hair is very long, but it isn't actually that thick. So if you do have a huge amount of hair, then hopefully you're better to fit it underneath a hat like this, and I could help to keep it dry. Put it on and see what happens. I feel very pointy not sure that I would be a very aerodynamic like this sort of ballerina meat Smurf. So good luck all right, so I haven't ever used one these cats like over there before, but the idea is comes much better than my ears and it feels sort of secure can't hear very well. So if I'm shouting, I apologize and hopefully it's gon na steal, the water. That'S been a little bit loose around the bottom and I must admit, I'm one of those people as she wears my normal silicon hat fairly low. Don'T like water going in my ears, although doesn't normally stop it, hoping this well well. So, like I said, I haven't never tried one of these caps before and I found it on Amazon when searching for caps belong home taps to keep your hair dry. A brand called Zoma, it cost me 14 pounds 48 and the description this one made me chuckle, so the consuming cap for women and men for long or short, hair tear resistant, silicone with ergonomic air pockets. All right, I'm actually not sure what to expect. My ears felt a bit wet spits laughing around here. Oh, I can tell it's gon na be dry, so, let's reveal middle bit of the cap. Is dry ears. Are a bit wet you guys can see. I can't actually tell whether it's dry on top, but it feels it I'm going to reveal. Oh, yes, not bad, I would say well. It certainly felt really odd having the bun on my head and then we tie my tumble turn. If I like lays a resistance, but I guess it's just different to what is my normal, but I think that's the last place to get wet on your head and if you put a bun there and the great part of this cap it it's got more room For lots of hair so clipping the way forward, I do feel on either side. Smaller, my head is probably quite average size I think, and it felt a little loose from the ears. So maybe something like this for larger heads or people with lots of hair and if I could get a smaller version of this, I reckon could be the answer. Well, whilst I've got time - and I'm sat here waiting for my hair to dry, it should probably use this moment to share some of the research that I've actually found out, and I spoke to my hairdresser just to know how to protect my hair a little bit More from chlorine and yes, you can get some anti cooling treatments which you can put on before swimming to try and protect it, and then also afterwards, and a few of you even suggested, putting conditioner on your hair. Is it's gon na stop it drying that? But you need to be careful with these products as if it's anything that's going to be too slippery or slimy on your hair, that when you put a cap on and you swim a few lengths, it's just gon na gradually slide off. And then your hair's gon na get fully exposed that way. A talking of slipperiness try to avoid putting too much moisturizer on your skin. I'Ve made that mistake before slamming moisturizer on my face and then throughout the session that you just constantly kind of pull your cap back down onto your forehead and another one which I don't know how much evidence there is with it. But I'm on the same page. Here as Sarah true, so we spoke to Sarah true last year, just after some superstition and one of hers is come race day. She doesn't like to have clean hair. As you probably know, clean hair is just nice and shiny and smooth, but that doesn't necessarily bode well for keeping your hats on and with that thought, if you don't swim every day, then try to maybe combine your swimming with winning like with when your hand. These are washers aei caps, gon na stay on better and be it's a good excuse to give everybody a thorough wash afterwards all right. Well, as we know one cap on its own with my hair, just stuffed up inside it does not work so gon na. Take it to the next level, I'm gon na put my hair a little bit tighter in a bar behind my head and I'm going to be using this sort of spandex style cap underneath which you can find it pretty much any sports job. It is old school. I have to admit this: one cost me 3 euros 50 and I've opted for this over latex because they don't, if you've ever tried a latex cap, but try taking that off a long hair and it pulls your hair out. So you need to think about. You know protecting your hair actually after the pool as well. So hopefully this will be kind to my hair and it will keep it slightly further away from the water and then I'm just gon na simply put this one. This GT end cap on over the top. These are, I think, $ 6.99 in our shop, but any silicone hat. So it's a very different feel to latex it just a little bit kinda on your hair and it's a bit thicker as well. I'M a bit of patience here. Don'T laugh, miss you, but I am new to this type of cap, but I always put my cap on from the back just fine, it's a little bit easier. I felt like I want to have some like petals on my cap or something that would be cool. It'S nicely sure it looks wonderfully fetching right now streamlined silicone cap necks again, I put it on from back to front some people do front to back whatever you find easiest but play around. You can just rip it in one motion: put your hands inside like so perch it on the back, pull over to the front. Excuse me I'm just taking the pressure off my ears, just bas. I talk to you guys, so I personally always put my goggles on over the top just like so, but you might find that if your cap comes down really nice and low for sealing that getting your goggles won't actually seal, because your goggles obviously need to completely Touch your skin in order for them not to leak. So there's a little bit of a debate here of whether you want to do goggles first and then your final cap on over the top or the other way around. I know mark always specials goggles on underneath which looks really nice and tidy, but I personally find that I prefer to have mine on the outside, so I can adjust them, take them off more easily and another downside of goggles underneath you're opening up the cap and Water can go in much more easily, so today it's all about keeping hair dry. Oh what you do okay. I think this could be a long day as I feel there might be wet hair underneath here, but I'll get straight off in the sunshine. Let'S reveal that's wet right away through, let's see how to layer, let's see you guys can probably tell if it looks dry or not. Hmm this this feels wet here around the edges. I feel tried to touch anyway. Let'S whole neck. Alright, there you go, you can see the water line it was seeping through, so that means top very top is dry, but I think my bun feels it feels wet, but I'm going to unveil and see how wet that really is. I think I supposed to say it's drier than control, but it's not really acceptable, Michael just about wring out a few drops, I'm dry on top, but even with a really tight bun. I'M amazed that the waters got all the way through that in just basically five minutes of swimming. So then we need to try another version in a moment, but on the plus side it does mean that I've got to sit in the Sun and dry, my hair, but thankfully it's sunny and windy here at prices result. So we should get some pretty quick dry time, I'm taking it back to basics on this one, and it's been inspired by a bit of research on YouTube with the good old shower cap. I have spent zero pennies on this one, and this is my GTN cap, which I already had in my bag. So I'm gon na pop that one underneath, but first I'm just gon na put my hair up, as I would normally when I'm swimming just in a sort of ponytail and then cuz, it's so long. I just fold it back on itself. Keep it out of the way at the back. It'S gon na try and pop my GTN cap on over the top, and this is an experiment I'll see if it works. Oh gosh right. I think I need to get rid of this so just see. If I can tuck it out, the way, stop very fetching, and it's probably not gon na - do the job if anything is sticking out from the silicone cap from the odd lumps this just feels like a normal stem cap. Now, alright, I feel like I'm just going for a normal swim with it once I've got rid of my sexy little shower cap fringe, not sure the shower cap is gon na make any difference, there's only one way to find out. Okay, let's reveal oh, it's all come up in one I'm gon na have to analyze this first middle of the cat looks fairly dry and it's hard to talk to my hands away. I can't actually tell if the water is on the inside or the outside, so the proof guess is in my hair: oh middle is dry ish. These n bits are not. You know, timing out, see if there's anything too that's a lot better than I expected. I guess, with a few downsides day with this shower cap, you might want to put out in the changes when it was watching, but, like I said earlier, it doesn't really matter what we look like. If you can keep your hair dry, it's got to be a good thing. I feel that I actually might need to experiment with this for a little bit longer, because today, I'm only doing 400 meters at a time. That'S all we've realistically got time for, but maybe in its time I'm filming I might put shower cap on and not tell you guys and just see for myself a little bit different. I have just stolen none other than an Olympic silver medalist to plat my hair hair feeling quite quite spoiled. So I know this is Lisa Nord earnest, you guys same term recognized Olympics of medalist from the London Games and triathlon, and at least it always has wonderful. Fastener hair, when she races just happens to be here at play, it's just result when we're filming. So probably it should make money agreed to give my hair about this much hair though yeah might take you longer. So my theory now is my hair's, always gon na. Be really nice and tight in my head and less of the the long hair is gon na be exposed to the water, so if it doesn't get entirely soaked, so I'm hoping that the bits on the inside I released not gon na be damaged by the chlorine. Even if just these bits get wet, so that's the theory. I have had my hair plaited in the past from racing, although they don't don't you notice, if it's dry, because you're sweating so much anyway. So it is an experiment. I have to now decide what hat combination I'm gon na do with this, because this is obviously one of the measures and we can't try absolute every scenario. Wow I've never had that Lisa's gone so much effort. I'M gon na go to quite a lot of effort here and try a double hat combo, but take you up the Steph and I'm going to do one silicon hat just a normal silicon, GTO some cap and then I'm gon na follow and I'm gon na use. This one again so - and I hope that this is the double sealant and that will do the job, so you might have to take the flat side. But sadly afterwards, I guess I will have to say I'm gon na go with the back over the top. A little arrangement, so this is pretty much my final attempt and I feel like it could be the winning combination, because not much of my hair is exposed with the plat and then the normal silicon cap, on which I get a pull of salad. My ears properly. In a moment to try and seal that that I'm even actually can take my earrings off, so I think that will help with the seal. And then I'm gon na go with this over the top again so covering the the ears and hopefully sealing right around here, and I mean if water gets through that I tell it where we really go from there all right. Let'S have a reveal. I do feel that these were slipping up a bit, and that might be that I put it on too low, so I think the water was just coming in under here. Oh, I can hear it again. That'S nice right, first layer, first layer definitely got some water inside it. So another. Let'S go! Oh oh right! This bit is dry at the top round. The sides not entirely dry. I don't know what it looks like on my head. This feels very dry. All down here feels entirely dry in the middle. I think I should probably unplug it. I don't want to take my platter. Thankfully, sir, I have to undo this wonderful hard work. She'S put in conclusion. I can't see the mirror, but there's definitely wet around here, although the bits of my hair, which let me get more damage to the ends and well they'll its happy but they're pretty dry. So that's got to be a plus point that at least the chlorine isn't damaging all of my hair and maybe with the plaster, the hairdryer I'd be good to gates, go to a peg or I might funny the cap, but all seriousness. I actually think just from that last experiment that I could feel the water going in every time I tumble turn, so it does depend on the type of swimming you're doing and if you're someone who just does a touch turn, maybe there's a plus point there, because The water's always just going to be going this way and not going to me forth in the sides, because it's the ears that seem to be causing the problem. Well, at the end of the day, there are so many options and a few disclaimers we've all got slightly different head shapes and different styles of hair and different ways in which we can put our hair up, but rounding. All of that up. I would say that the tighter you can make your hair. The drive is going to stay. So if you can manage your plat, which obviously I can't do myself or a high bun, that seemed to keep my hair the driest and then when it comes for caps. Double-Layer seems to give double protection, which I guess makes sense, and that extra large cap seem to help keeping the ears slightly drier and obviously it gives really you've got more hair. There'S still so many different versions of that, and I did only ever swim for 400 meters at a time which isn't necessarily real. But if you're someone who just does touch turns and breast rate you're, probably gon na - find that all of those methods keep your hair dry, I think oh well, that leaves, for me to say, is: go away and experiment we've, given you some ideas, but do share Them because I want to know - and hopefully together, if we all work on this, we will eventually find a way which we can keep our hair entirely dry at the end of a full swim session if you've enjoyed. This then give us a like, and a follow over at GTM

Global Triathlon Network: Do you have any swim cap hacks when you go swimming? Leave us a comment!

Jane Marshall: The challenge is real! I spend almost as much time trying to get my hair dry, after a swim before work, as I do in the pool - I would pay more money for a swimming cap that keeps long hair dry

Alex Baum: So the method I’ve found is brushing conditioner through my dry hair before plaiting and putting under a cap. You still need to rinse the conditioner off, so not technically dry, but it blocks the chlorine and you don’t need to shampoo after. Good way of doing a deep condition.

Alex Spencer: As a guy with really short hair, I really enjoyed this video! I didn't even consider the struggle before seeing this!

therosko: I came back to this video to share a successful attempt to keep my hair dry. I wanted to make sure that I do not get it wet when swimming in low temperatures outside. What worked best was to use a regular swim cap and a neoprene headband on top. It worked for crawling for about 30-40 minutes (haven't tried longer, as it is cold...). I do have long hair, so I made sure to keep it as compact as possible in a braid, the end of which I flipped from the back of my head up to the top. I did chose a right headband to make sure that it does not let any water go through around the ears and it overlaps with the swim cap, creating a good transition. Hope it works for others. P.S. It would not make much sense on a hot day or in the pool, as it might be too hot.

Nonhlanhla Mkumbuzi: When you are a black person, this is even more complicated. Our hair is fragile already and prone to breakage on a good day. Add chlorine 3x a week and it's a disaster especially because washing and drying said hair is not as easy as Heather has it here, it's a whole production. This is all assuming you even get a cap that fits your braids or dreadlocks (If you do, you have to put them in a top knot which as Heather said is NOT aero at all). Otherwise, you have to change hairstyles and go for certain ones (which may not be the most flattering). Yeah, I really need to know how to keep my hair dry when I swim.

susan patnode: Thanks for trying to figure this out! Exercising 6 days week (some multiple workouts) and trying to do so without washing and drying the hair every day is a BIG challenge!! I’ll try the bun and double cap. Good Job!

brittney swanson: I'm grateful for this video/discussion, this has been a long-time challenge, first started off with putting on conditioner and like you mentioned my cap kept falling off, now I pre-wet my hair with water so at least the chlorine isn't sucking into my hair as much.

Gary Coronado: Oh man. I feel sorry for you Heather. All that waiting underneath the sun, with breeze running through your hair. Must have been a really tough day in the office/pool.

Ysriel: Thanks Heather and GTN for making a video for helping women in the sport. Ponytails in a helmet next?

Andrew McAlister: All that sitting around in the sun waiting for your hair to dry. A tough day at the office, Heather. :-)

Chris Bosso: While it won't keep your hair dry, getting your hair wet before the swim should keep most of the chlorinated water away.

Karichi Du Soleil: With curly/ frizzy hair, if you can’t keep it 100% dry then there’s no point.... cuz you’ll need to fix the parts that get wet anyway. Really wish I had straight/ smooth hair that I didn’t have to fuss around with so much. DX

Annmaree Dupriez: Thank you for the useful and practical content. Now the real struggle is porous blonde hair and chlorine! Would you like a green tint with your caramel ash blonde streaks?

Rosalie L: i tie it in a tight low bun and my cap keeps my hair pretty dry! i was surprised to see that yours didn’t keep your hair dry at all :o

OVOCNY CHECK: I would just point out that in water you are trying to by hydrodynamic not aerodynamic otherwise I appreciate the amonut of swims you had to do to shot this video :)

Cynthia Smith: Just wondered if the sticky stuff women use to keep wardrobe malfunctions from happening might help keep the ear section down tight as that seems to be the biggest problem.

Faith: I'm starting swimming every weekend this video has helped me thank you! Also pleaaaseee don't rub the towel on your hair you are literally giving yourself split ends scrunch your hair in the towel never rub .

trbeyond: Never thought I’d find a full 20 minute long hair video on hair on GTN.

Nico Lowrider: i used to have long hair before i got into swimming/triathlon. i've thought about this issue a few times before but haven't experienced it myself. the long hair even used to annoy me when i was "only" a runner though, as it's just a lot of maintenance and being an athlete who often gets wet and sweaty hair obviously doesn't make it easier. also, Heather has great hair, and plenty opportunity to show it off in this video ;)

TheStormborn: Ahh that swimming costume ! I need it. Sadly... as a girl with hair past my waist, there's really not alot I can do to stop my hair getting wet

Barazatti Ital: For me with long hair, three normal silicone cap layers works perfectly. Thank you for the video!☺

cheesonalcheese: I’ve got dyed hair and I’m worried about the colour being stripped out. I don’t want to wear a cap but it might be the only option.

Madlaina B: it is absolutely impossible to keep your hair dry if youre doing any kind of serious swimming workout. i would even say that if your hair is dry after your workout, it wasnt a hard enough/long enough workout. its just something you have to endure when youre swimming...

Barefoot Contessa: I’ve tried everything, I’d settle for just being able to stop the swim cap from sliding off while I’m swimming.

Pienimusta: Is being bald more aero? Worth to go for that 2% increased performance! The Papa Smurf shark looked great though ;D

sun fun: Please can you tell us if co - wash could be better for hair 2 times a weak ....

greenspace91: Thank you for doing this!!

della ware: you can put your hair in a plastic bag with an elastic around it and put your swim cap over it. that’s what I do to keep my hair dry

M. J. B.: Hi Question: how is such a situation made? When the hair is finally wet or clogged? Hallo Frage : wie so wirt über haupt so welsche umstände gemacht ? Wenn die Harre am schluss doch nass oder klampt sind ?

Francesca Donati: The braid is what worked best for me when I used to have long hair.

Elvis Jaeger Abdul Jabaar: Next video could be "Can you get sunburned in February ?"

Kate Dating Coaching: Do you know what your size head is? In UK sizes my head is 7 and a quarter (from horseriding hats) would be good if swimming caps were sized similarly

Firebird: Love the hair drying montage...

Mark Richards Tri: being more Duncan Goodhew ( ask your grandparents kids ) than Barry Gibb, i don't find wet hair to be an issue.

levi awomi: Thanks very much for all these experiments

Pooja: Is there a link to all the caps you have used here?

Gurrrl: I kind of want to not wear a cap so that when I’m swimming outside, my hair can get blonder but I’m a little nervous for some reason.

No Thanks: Her: I’ve got quite a bit of long hair Me: with thick hair at my lower back :/

Sentient #6: I'm a guy, I have long hair and I have been putting off swimming because of this. Apparetly not many men with long hair swim. Such a small niche, isn't it?

Eleanor: I'm not sure if you're still responding to comments a year later but I've just taken up swimming and I've ordered a silicone wig grip headband, so I'm going to try Step 1. Braid Step 2. Shower cap Step 3. Wig grip Step 4. Swim cap Wish me luck! (I'll report back!)

Burhan Qureshi: Silicone material cap is best for hair ? Yes, No ?

Dovid Goldstein: Please make a video on backstroke starts

camiel swart: Got short hair, but great video!

Jules Hargreaves: It's not hard to french plait your own hair, Heather. Just needs practice. Think of it as good for your shoulder flexibility!. Anyway, I do the french plait, but I always wash my hair after swimming even if it is not very wet - want to get rid of the sticky chlorine-ness, and hair washing is a good way of making sure everything gets clean. I only very rarely wash my hair at home. But my question is really on the goggles. Racing swimmers seem to wear 2 hats with the goggle sandwiches in between. Why do they do that?

🐸 maisa 🐸: i wore 2 shower caps, then a swimming cap, then 2 more shower caps, another swimming cap, and another shower cap *it didnt work*

Joy Levallius: Thank you!!!!!!!!

bv502: I have bleached hair so the chlorine will turn my hair green and it’s what’s stopped me from swimming for years now

PlanesTrainsAutos: I use all the products from Team Zealios. They sponsor a few pro triathletes. Amazing products. No issues with chlorine here.

Arash: To be honest, I think Heather was just looking for a reason to take some time in sun and show off her amazing physique!

Sandra O'Brien: they just fall off my head when I swim.

Rubber Soul: Okay I'm a guy, but a tight black TYR latex swim cap keep my hair dry ;-)

M. J. B.: Der Film ist Super gemacht worden ! ! Wie oft muste sie ins wasser rein für das zu machen ?

Callimachus T: Am I the only one who find her accent cute?

♞ demesne: my hair is down to my waist and have to use a school swimming cap. i can barely put my hair in it and it's my first period so the rest of the day my hair drips down my back and its SO uncomfortable.

Makayla Rubio: i realllyyyy like those goggles you have! brand?

Stevie Debaets: I'm a guy with short hair and watcht the hole movie

Roy Thuv: I miss my hair

Emilie Pham: 4:14 can't hear? I need to hear my coach telling us what to swim... :/

The_sad_gopnik: I have the same cap with ear caps and it cost me three dollars

Wintertyde: LMAOO I have swimming cuz of school and I have curly hair- that’s like £10 of product washed away

evilqueen 9099: My hair got soo damaged from the clorean

Bianca Buchanan: Use a swim cap

happy Christmas: What type of bra do u use?
