How To Make Fancy Hair Pins

Here's a little slide show tutorial on how to make your very own fancy hair pins out of knitting needles. You also get a bonus of two hairstyles with which to play with your new pins!

How to make fancy hair pins, you will need knitting needles, a needle and thread glass, beads, epoxy and toothpicks. Also, some wax paper bend your needles in half. I bent mine on a drumstick. Well, I had my husband Bentham. I strung the glass beads on regular old thread in the pattern that I wanted. Then I lay them out of my paper. Mixed up, the epoxy got plenty of epoxy on my toothpick and then I drop the epoxy between the beads and the knitting needle and in five minutes I peeled it up off the wax paper and tada. This is what it looks like in the front and then there's the back and, as you can see, you have four brand-new fancy hair pins. How about a couple of hairstyles showing you how to use them hi? So I'm going to show you the two hairstyles that I did with these hairpins they're really easy. So this should be pretty quick. The first one is JJ's pretzel bun modified only slightly now. If your hair is shorter than mine after you do this first wrap, you can go ahead and pull it through, but since I have extra I'm going to wrap it one more time and if you have more than me, you can wrap it a third time all Right now this fit we're going to pull through, but instead of pulling all the way through just kind of pull it up into your loop, so the end doesn't stick out and spread it up. Just a bit now take our hair pins, like so see ya. Now it would have been neater that I watched myself in the mirror, but you get the basic idea: that's how that one goes pretty cool huh all right. The second one is just a really loose rope. Rope braid fun, but I guess the key is loose rope. Braid so send your ponytail wherever you want the middle of your bun to be and the room in a rope braid now, usually I really torque the heck out of it, because I want it to really stay and be you know as tight as possible this one. We don't want tight, so gently lift in one direction and then twist in the other. Only instead of making it really tight, you want it to be kind of big and loose like so, as you guys have seen Myra braids. This is really loose for me, but that's the effect we're trying to get so loose rope, braid pack, the end all righty and then we're going to bind now don'tdon't ight. This is it. This is a soft bun, so be gentle. You just want to go around. Then, of course, tuck your hand under alright and it feels about right, then we'll do our hair pin. I don't feel my comes to me silly. Someone is that number one right there marry. Let'S see Alex yeah nice. So there you go, Turpin's turned out nice and they, I think they did already have fun playing with your new hair pins. You

Laila al Bahir: How wonderful! I know I'm going to make a set (or a few sets) for myself and for friends. Thank you!

Stacy McDuffie: you have truly turned hair into an artform! Lovely! You have also inspired me to grow my hair out. Thank you for your videos

Cindy: I love this idea. I got myself a set of knitting needles and made my own. I LOVE THEM!!! I just have to decorate them now. Thanks!!

Caki3119: I absolutely love your hair!! and your tips and hairstyles are gorgeous!! thank you soooo much i love it!! :)

poetchick4Jesus: I am now the proud owner of 4 sets of these things (all different colors), and I LOVE them! I would always have to cut my hair whenever it got too long because it was so thick that claw clips wouldn't hold it up. These are so much easier to use than chopsticks (and less dangerous!). They are a quick and easy fix to "how do I get all this hair up and out of my way" and they hold all day! I've gotten a lot of compliments on them, and a bit of "What ARE those?" Thanks so much for sharing the idea!

Bethany Morford: I love this one. I do something similar, but this adds a little more class!

Christine Reilly: hi there! I just bought a package of four knitting needles, so excited to make them into pins. thank you for inspiring me=)

Amanda Lutterman: Beautiful. I'll have to practice for my daughter's hair =)

Joanne CraftyRapunzel: I love those hair pins ... thank you for sharing

peacekermit: Thanks for posting! I love yr hair!!!! That's another project that I'll have to add to my list of things that I want to make :o)

Jennifer JenniferT: I love this ideas. I have old knitting needles and I used buttoms with a shang on the back. I have some big rinestone buttoms. Thank You.

gullinvarg: Thanks for the video. I'm glad I'm not the only one that puts my hair in my mouth when I'm working with it. ;-D Also, good to know how to make some "rugged" hairpins. I tend to snap the plastic ones sooner or later. FWIW, my hair is about as long as yours (or maybe a touch shorter), but thinner.

GuatemalaN1991: Wow, When I first saw this I thought really??but its sooo cool!!! Your hair pins are soo pretty, I'm definatley going to do this!!! Thanks!!!!!! Ps, how did you bend the needles and do you have to have a particular size of needles?

poetchick4Jesus: I did want to add a little bit about making them. I bent mine around a chair back (the kind with the poles in the middle), and I discovered that to get them even, bend them about 2/3 of the way, and then focus on bending the longer side to match the shorter. I wire-wrapped my beads on, but I don't recommend it, because my hair tends to get snagged taking them out. I don't like how the epoxy backing looks, though, so if I make any more, I will probably use glue combined with thread or GSP line.

Camila Cestari: looooved the loose rope braid , perfect

china33ful: That's genius! So creative! I knit also & never thought -_-! So glad I found u! Thank you, thank you, thank you!,!!!

T. P.: This really looks great! You have a beautifull hair :) And..yeah...I'm sure it takes a LOT OFF patience to have so LONG hair :D Regards!

gullinvarg: BTW, I got size 0 (2mm) and size 1 (2.25mm) needles (plus a 20 needle pack that goes down to size 000 or 1.5mm). I'm these are thinner than what Torrin uses, but the larger sizes I found came in my least favorite colors. Unless you're just going to use them for embellishment on a style that will stay on it's own, I suggest not going below a size 1 needle. I'm guessing Torrin used size 3 or 4 in the video. Size 1 went through most of the button shanks with plenty of room to spare.

torrinpaige: They're the smaller ones with points on both ends. I can't remember what type they are, as I don't knit. But as long as they're pointed on both ends, they'll work. :o) And the ones that aren't make great hairsticks.

GuatemalaN1991: @torrinpaige, thanks, I brought some knitting needles in a 4.5mm. Also, does it have to be epoxy glue or any type of glue? Xxx

rosieknitter: @torrinpaige They are called Double Point Needles, you can usually buy them in packs of 4 or 5. Great idea I'll have to see if I can make some myself.

JenBsweet: I love your videos! your so awesome!

Hope Wiley: You are so pretty in blue. The color just looks great on you :)

Jay Whyte: Stunning hair!

Dianna M: looks great i love ur hair styles

Misty: I tried this but my knitting needles snapped in half, they want to be either straight or in pieces... are there special needles I should be buying?

Hillary Green: WOW! Amazing!

Nela Lipe: looks great!

Joanne CraftyRapunzel: Have you ever used a glue gun to glue the beads to your hair pins? Just wondering if it would hold like the epoxy.

torrinpaige: @rapunzel19611 I have never found hot glue to hold especially well over time. I'm sure you could try it. I am very messy with hot glue, so I don't use it all that often. I also end up burning myself on the danged glue gun. Always. LOL.

S8S5S8: Wow, you truly have gorgeous hair!

bluepoppy: hi there, ive been trying to work out what you do with the thread? do you just snip it off? many thanks

MySunAndStars: gorgeous and omg your hair is so beautiful

gullinvarg: Last bit. :oD I found that I got better results if I bent the needles around something that was twice the diameter I wanted until they were at about a 90° angle, then switched to a cylinder that was the diameter I wanted. Your mileage may vary.

myhealthyjourney4life: DO you buy chance make these and sell them? I would love to buy some already made.

Maria S.: wow CONGRATS, very nice videoooo will try to make them too! thanks !!!!

Joanne CraftyRapunzel: I kind of thought maybe it wouldn't hold so well. So off to find some knitting needles (in the thrift store maybe) and the epoxy. Thank you for your answer

Jane d’Arc: Thanks for your reply.I ll get my handy husband to do the same.

torrinpaige: My hubby bent them around one of my drumsticks. The needles area a lightweight aluminum and they bend pretty easily.

malyy000: thanks, now i'm pretty happy with my hair style, before this video i was really unsatisfied with it.

gullinvarg: Got the supplies to try this, but I'm going to use some fancy buttons (the kind with a shank on the back) and string it on to the hair pin/knitting needle before gluing it. I also got some beads to try this just like the video. I could "almost" get away with just stringing the button on and not gluing. ;-) I'm using moderately large buttons (3/4" - 1 1/4") so I'll just have the button without additional embellishment. I got buttons that coordinated with the needle colors.

torrinpaige: @Gurumeen1 Yup! I just snip it off once the epoxy has dried.

torrinpaige: @GuatemalaN1991 My husband bent them around one of my drumsticks with just his hands. I've never found the double sided ones in any other size but this - and right off hand, I can't tell you what size that is - 6-8 inches is my best guess.

LindieLee: are these the knitting needles you used? 7" (18 cm) Susan Bates Silvalume Double Point Knitting Needles Size 6 (4 mm)

Sophie O.: When you knit and you don't want to murder your double pointed needles lol

Sandra Casagrande: love your videos. do you know how to do the updo that women used to wear in the late 1800's and early l900's. It was all proofy up front and then the poof went down toward the back. I think barbra streisand wore this do in one of her moves, fannie bryce???

torrinpaige: @KaylaCandy15 It is, and thank you.

Jada Knight: Im so jealous she didnt even use bobby pins my hair is not as thick or long an i  always have to use booby pins wow so cool love it...

torrinpaige: @GuatemalaN1991 epoxy turns into plastic, which is why I use it. You can try another glue, but I'm not sure how another type will peel off the way paper. LOL.

misselarisse: wow you say pins, I say it can hold my entire hair :)

Jane d’Arc: How did you bend the needles?

turtleplh44: where do u get those hairpins...????

Kiss Knit: You Rock... No More to say...

charl0tte666: woow i love your hair.... kissess

torrinpaige: How weird. Mine are just the cheap aluminum double pointed types. As I do not knit, I am at a loss to the many types they have, but I just got mine at Wal-Mart, so they weren't anything fancy.

Breanna Smith: @torrinpaige Double Pointed Knitting needles

psykokitty7: you are so cool

gullinvarg: OK, so it wasn't the last bit. ;o) The needles I got are Boye model 6307-1. The number after the dash is the size, all sizes are part number 6307. In other words, size 3 would be 6307-3. You can google "Boye 6307-2" (or whatever size you want) to find them online. Be warned that each size comes in a variety of colors (pink, purple, blue, gold, etc), although web sites tend to picture silver. You quite possibly won't be able to order a particular color if you order online, but I could be wrong.

pemchem: *face palm* .....are you kidding?

Steph Pappas: wow you have long hair
