Pin Curls | Simple 60'S Hairstyle Tips - Ern Westmore 1961

Hollywood beauty guru Ern Westmore explains in detail how to achieve a simple pin curls set 60's hairstyle using hair clips.

"Do you have to set your hair every night? I'll show you how to eliminate that night after night setting with properly made pin curls. You can do pin curls using bobby pins, or as we demonstrate here, a hair clip hairstyle. using hair clips, you can do stand up curls, forward or reverse curls, side curls etc.

First, your hair must be thoroughly cleaned. Second, remember that small strands make tight curls and large strands make loose curls. Keep the hair strands wet. Make a small circle at the end of the strand and roll it up to the scalp to create the curl. Insert the hair clip above and below the entire curl and there you have it."

Do you have to set your hair every night In just a moment I'll show you how to eliminate that night after night setting Hello, I'm Ern Westmore Today, I'm going to show you how to eliminate that night after night setting and cut it down to once or Twice a week with properly made, pin curls Here are some of the old fashioned methods of making pin curls At first they were made with crossed hair pins like this, Or they were held together with a toothpick like this.. The pin curl is no longer known as such.. Today it's the `` sculptured curl''. This is the stand-up curl.. It may be turned right or left backward or forward.. It'S used for height or fullness. Here'S the barrel curl.. It simply rolls up and stands away from the head and is used for fluff and fullness. This is the `` forward. Curl''. It'S used to direct the curl up and toward the face, And this is the `` reverse curl'', which is used to direct the curl away from your face.. Now, here's the best advice for making clean, smooth, sculptured curls, It's the hair, clip Curls and waves, will be smoother and lasts longer.. First, your hair must be thoroughly clean.. Second, small strands make tight, curls. Large strands, make loose curls Now .. keep the strand wet, because you can't make a lasting curl unless it is fairly wet. Next, the strand is driven This flattens and stretches it. To do this. Use your thumb and index finger at the base next to the scalp. Hold. It firmly then draw the comb in the direction the curl is to take.. Now then, make a small circle at the end of the strand and roll it up to the scalp like this ... This is the `` reverse curl''. Whatever you do don't twist, the strand Now insert the clip above and below the entire curl, and there you have it.. Now then, the stand-up curl, which will give you height or fullness and when brushed correctly, will last until your next shampoo is made like this. Combing straight up and slightly in the opposite direction from which the curl is to turn. Hold the strand, taut and roll. It all the way up the stem like this. The opening in the center should be almost as large at the outside of the curl, Now hold the top of the curl firmly and insert the clip completely through the opening at the base of the curl.. It is best to put small wads of cotton between these rows of curls to hold them in place while drying. The next thing I'll show you is the brushed out result of the correctly made sculptured curls, Correct, sculptured curls, look like this when brushed out, They can be brushed in to any style. You wish Smooth waves, fluffs or folds and best of all you'll only have to set your hair once or twice a week. Remember there isn't a woman in the world who can't become more beautiful,

Rose Lonsway: There isn’t a woman in the world who can’t become more beautiful.

PFridell: My mom could pin curl her own hair with one hand after she had her stroke. I don't know how she did it!

kreepykulture: This is so genuinely helpful I want to try pincurling soon and most modern tutorials arent the most informative lol

Rogue849: My grandma was born in the mid twenties, and well into the 2000's she was still pin curling her hair after washing her hair. I never understood why. Now that I'm learning more about these times, I do.

Michele: They certainly make it look labor intensive. My mom would put our hair in pin curls every Saturday night. It was a lot easier than the clip shows.

Anonymous: They make it look so easy! Whenever I try to do pin curls it ends in tears, I’m so bad at it

XxXShevampXxX: Ern Westmore must have been a very busy dude back in the day cuz I can't tell you how many videos I've seen of him explaining stuff like this lol. He had to have been cranking em out quick. I'm glad he did so many of them though, I really enjoy watching them all. Especially when I'm trying to go to sleep. I dunno why but they also help when my anxiety decides to start fucking with me for no apparent reason. Sometime I'll watch one if I feel a panic attack coming on. It doesn't always prevent it from happening but it does sometimes and if it doesn't stop it, it at least makes it a little more bearable usually. It's a good distraction.

Praise the Most High: Thank you for this video. I'm in Beauty school right now, and the topic is curls. I was looking for some intake on pin curls and figured this would be a wonderful lesson to learn from someone who was closer to the times of it's originality. Nice to see that not much has change, and I'm being taught authentically. Confidence level increased! ☺️✌️

KillBabe: Even after years of advancement of skill and products, This tutorial is way better than how they taught us in cosmetology school. Lol

Denise Herud: Ironically I was doing my night pin curls when this came on I use Wen, and the whole system is no hot tools besides a blow dryer and round brush—and at night u put ur hair up in dry pincurls pretty much exactly like this only on dry hair(so ur style holds overnight). Short hair gets small curls like this, while my looooong hair gets big curls about the size of a soda can. It took me forever to figure it out, finally having a Wen model actually show me how she does it—this vid is exactly spot on. Only diff is I use Bobby pins not those clips bc they’re hard to sleep in—the fat end digs my scalp...Bobby pins don’t do that(I failed and gave up the crossed hair pins like they showed—too hard). This def holds style so the next day u just take out pins and shake out hair—no curling or flat iron, just perfect hair I haven’t had a split end, broken end, or ‘bubble hair’ since I started using Wen *and* this pincurl method. Been doing this since 2012...yea guys may think it’s weird but the result is always worth it when they touch my hair

Niki Y: Oh my gosh! I'm getting my long hair cut short tomorrow, I'll be giving this a try!

Regina Shakirova: This is the best most informative explanation of pincurls available.

Vintage Kitty: I just love these Westmore videos. That family was so knowledgeable!

Jennifer Hansen: These videos are so much fun to watch!

andrea bella: 60’s? Looks more 40’s-50’s? Looks older to me but anyway, fun to see

Lori Bollinger: I can’t imagine going through all that. Me, hair dryer, hot rollers or curling iron. It’s so interesting to watch the techniques of beauty throughout the decades.

Julie Cramer: Wish I had someone who would curl my hair!

hellie el: Ern Westmore - is he part of the Westmore Hollywood hair/makeup dynasty? Very nice video. Thank you.

Yvonce’: I love this. I will try this at home.❤️

Julie Black: When i was little, my mum used to pin curl my hair for curls and waves. However, my grandmother would offer to braid it, for the same results.

Lee A: My aunt would do this she had quite thin hair but if i was to try this it would take forever as i have thick wavy hair but i loved watching this it brings back fond memories of my aunt in the mirror back in the day !!❤

Cissy2cute: Like Cynthia g, my mother pin curled my hair too. And oh, how it would hurt sometimes if I got stuck with a pin. No matter what, they were never comfortable but something to be endured. The end result was very nice though.

nita ntx: Так здорово интересно

Mary Webb: Great job as usual

Sandra Denise Kennedy: I can't wait to try the cotton ball trick!

John McGovern: That is so beautiful!

Pixel Kirby: Wow what a coincidence this was posted just when I'm all about pin curls haha

Freya Lenton: I’d love to have enthusiasm to make my hair nicer lol. I applaud them

Adeline Fischbach: Favorite period... love your videos ❤️

Solution: what they apply before curling ?

tep.mp3: So pretty

Alicia Vintage: This is awesome

Unfinished, Unbothered: Only issue for me is that my hair is waayyyy longer that this. Structured my hair length is early impossible.

The Pochade: I remember my mother setting curls in her hair and then putting on the bag/shower cap hair dryer machine.

Uhhlaneuh: I’m sure Ern Westmore did so much hair

Dreaming Dreamer: I can’t imagine trying to sleep with toothpicks in your hair!

Ecks Dee: i have naturally curly hair

gabriellakm: So adorable end frase

Harriet Brown: Why did he say not to twist it? What’s the effect if you twist it?

Person Incognito: My poor stupid mother and grandmother would torture my hair and my head this way trying to give my naturally very thin hair curls that would stay. They thought they could train my hair to be curly, they had no idea it was genetic and the curls would never stay.

Heather Bailey: Wow, that looks so hard!!

yelloworangered: I used to try to pincurl my hair. What a nasty mess. Thank goodness the 60s came along and all I had to do was part it straight down the center and go.

TinkerBell: Cute

DaniGamerWarrior: Explained well and done in a pretty way... that last line though, super cringey. Yikes.

JR Pacer: I don't think long hair was the thing then....

Tee Ramirez: ❤️

Simir Johnson: Tried it on my pubes, but the results were not good.

Robert Underdunk Terwilliger: Back in the good old days when you could mansplain women about hair ...

becca moses: this is a good tutorial and all, but wow that model’s hair is so thin

mishmash65: I always find it so funny that these tutorials are always narrated by men lol it’s just odd

mishmash65: I’m so confused as to why a man is presenting a vid on how women should do their hair LMAOO

Rana Sudem Uçar:

Mary J: I just want to make sure I understand..... This old man is telling women how to do their hair???

Equinox: That were beauty Youtube channels xD

JUDITH MENDEZ: That one dislike though

NIcholas Bilski: Does anyone else think it’s hilarious that a man is teaching how to make pin curls?

Selinor578: 0:30 ARRGGHH she's got 666 on her skull!!!!

lemurian chick: How was this the early '60s? That style reminds me of "Father Knows Best" or Mid-50s.

zynbw: I don't 4c this in my future

M.A.C: Why is a man giving instructions?

Brichanise Terrell: Interesting they didn’t wash their hair everyday. Jesus bless

Just Jules: It’s annoying to see these plump “men” always involved in ladies beauty tutorials.

F C: A man instructing young ladies dot their hair in the sixties? Lol come on. They couldn't hire a girl?

Diseño Nocturno: Que feos peinados, cortes, todo horrible

aquafox: why are men tutoring in most of these? Were these trends set for women by men? I’m not American, I’m genuinely asking about American fashion from last century

Hana White: This crap wont work on us colored folks
