Hi guys welcome to the new Regal gentleman Studios. Today, we've got Shabazz in the chair. How are you mate? Oh good, thanks now. Good luck! I'M very well thanks man very well! So what are you thinking of doing today? Um, so I'm going for an old classic. Okay, Johnny Depp inside haircut, okay longer at the front, yeah tapering it around the sides: okay, um and then hopefully you can sprinkle your magic in there. I can try mate. I can try. Okay, let's have a look. What we're working with now! We'Ve got that bit of the head shave: okay, it's only down the very bottom, but then what we've got to remember, we've got to do. We'Ve got to then connect in all of this length to that length. That'S already there, which is really really hard to do, because it's so short and then so long and then we've only got if we'll even length at the top. We'Ve only got like that much load to blend it in so that's that's the challenge straight away. Yeah! It'S probably a doable challenge, but it's still a challenge and then obviously we want to put a fade in there. So what I was just thinking you should do is go for more of a kind of tapered effect. If I was honest with you, because that way, we can get away with leave them all and through here we can still add a bit of a taper through the neck. We can go down and open five even zero on the on the neck as well. Yeah yeah all right cool, all right. Well, um do you have to get started? Let'S get started, then yeah yeah: let's do it cool man awesome, so I'm gon na start, first of all by separating the top to the back inside. So I want to do a horseshoe section in this, because you wouldn't really want to cut the sides in and based on that video we want to try and keep some length through the corners. I just I think, you're going to suit it lows mate. I think I can just see you. I can almost see the end result. I think it's a little really cool um, so yeah. So what we need to do is just try and get this back in size cut in perfectly as we can so all I do. I want to drop it down a little bit at the back, because again, when we were going for that kind of 90s Vibe, we need to leave. It'S always like a slightly rounder finish, but obviously because we're putting a bit of a modern Twist on it by putting a taper in there or some sort of fading element in there. I still want to try and leave as much length as possible, so we want to leave a little bit of length through that corner as much as we can get away with. So I'm going to use I'm going to start on the right hand, side I'm going to use the bottom here as my guide to blend it up. Okay, so we're going to take all the backing sides off and then we're going to be mainly focusing on the top. So are you aware you're definitely sure you want to lose all this hair? Oh don't make me second! Guess myself just do it all right man, let's do it now, let's start with the Clippers. Now I'm gon na work through the back inside I'm gon na just start to blend this out as best I can so. I want to try and leave as much length as I possibly can up here, so we can still bring this back. Essentially that's what we want to try and do now. I'Ve got my guide in now, so I'm going to use that now to work into the backing sides working from the right hand, side cross just taking my time with it. This is already speeding up a lot of the haircut anyway, so we can take our time. I'M doing clever overcome like this and, as you can see, I'm just going taking it shorter. Obviously, but I'm not going like really make a sure, because I want to still incorporate the the tape Rod even the fade in there. At some point, maybe I could even do a feed down the bottom there now under here now, so where what made you go for the sort of Johnny Depp star, then what was it about? The look that you really liked um? I just wanted something where I could potentially keep still the length of my hair, yeah um and I'm quite into the classical Cuts. Okay um, so I know undercuts have been making their way back as well. Yeah and there's also been like a shift away from Fades. Yes, and I think all Barbers are getting sick of doing it as well um. Well, I think when you do anything a lot, it does get boring right. You know what I mean, I'm sure anyone gets bored of doing the same thing over and over again you know yeah, but another big problem is trying to actually find someone who knows how to do men's long, hair well, yeah, because the High Street Barbers, you know, They'Re good and they're very well versed when it comes to the Fades yeah, but when it comes to the longer hair and then blending it and texturing it, it's almost a very gray area for them. Yeah. It'S it's a bit of a kind of um. If you, if you, I suppose, if you weren't trained in the in the area of texture and messy Bed Head hairstyle stuff, it is obviously people are trained a lot more now in like the fade and the classic haircuts, so you're going to be taught, I think What what I've noticed is that there's a lot of um there's a lot of barber colleges now and teaching people to do a haircut more than teaching people to do like Barbara in a sense, and don't mean that doesn't mean that sound negative. But that's kind of. What'S happening right, um, and what what I'm finding is that obviously fading is, is still a really really popular hairstyle right, any sort of fade is still popular um, so when you're being taught to feed and obviously the the main focus is the fade, the top isn't Really the main focus, then: that's when, like the lack of scissorware, comes in that's from the lack of of understanding different textures comes in, you know, because when you're doing a fade, it's all right, different textures, really matter, but at the same time you've got to kind Of give you you know, you've still got to understand how to use the Clippers, how to frame the face things like that. So you can't really blame the barber. You have to blame the educator, so I think that's just where it's commercial, I think there's just a lot of that. I think there's just a lot of a lot of haircuts being taught more than more than the industry being taught. You know um. I think that's where the problem, the problem lies, really um I'll. Tell you how to fix that, because if you want to become a barber, you have to be an apprentice like an actual Apprentice, which means you have to win. Absolutely no money do more work than everybody else: um and clean toilets and clean floors and go to shops for everyone and get everyone lunch. The problem is what you don't realize during that time. Is that you're learning valuable skills? You learn how to run your own business yeah, you know from the ground or from the very bottom up, you're learning how to do that, but the problem is obviously you know in a society that we live in. Everyone wants everything now you know what I grew up in. I grew up in dialogue mate. You know, I mean I grew up in the world of dial-up internet. I had to be patient right, you know I say yeah I have no. You probably have no idea. No okay, exactly so, I grew up in that anymore. Anyone who's in the third season over and on the sons were exactly where I'm coming from, where you'd have to share the phone line. So if your mum was on the phone, you couldn't go on the internet right, um, a vice versa right and then that's a tragic yeah, exactly yeah exactly stuff like that. We grew up in an area where, like Evan just took ages really, but we didn't know any different, so it didn't feel like it's okay, it was still amazing um. But obviously now, like my kids, my kids skip intros on Netflix all the time. So, if we're never watching like if we're not streaming something or what's like normal TV there's, there's attention spans so short because they've got to sleep throughout this they've got to sit through this. They just don't do it. You know what I mean. So it is quite a it's quite a tough one, really mate, it's quite it's quite hard, so I guess Society hasn't helped with this. I guess just now, isn't it so that's why people are being taught like you know to learn the job in like uh many weeks, 12 weeks or whatever um the little Lennon said become a barber, but what they're, not what the learning is to become is to Do a haircut and that's the difference and I'm not not trying to put any colleges down. That'S, but that's just my opinion on it. You know I thought that's just the case and the problem with that is obviously you know. You can't learn everything in that amount of time. You start to go on the shop floor and land, but if you go on the shop for and become a barber, you don't have time to learn because you're cutting hair every day, you know you're getting people walking in you've got to do whatever you think is The right thing to do so you don't have the time to just to own your craft and learn. You know we I had. I had a year to watch, you know what I mean I didn't have YouTube, then I didn't have anything else like that. So I said I said all The Barbers that I worked with. Who was all on the same training as me, so we all we all we're offenses. We all spent a year and or two learning the trade starting from the bottom. You know all that sorts of stuff, so it was quite hard to it's quite hard to kind of um to do it nowadays. I guess you know everyone wants to become a barber, so they'll learn a quick way to do it and when you start training as well, yeah um did you work with all different types of hair varieties or um. So that's curly. Obviously the shorter head and longer hair, or was it like a standardized? No, no, it was um. Oh yeah. We worked with every every everyone yeah I I worked an AM in a suburb of Liverpool, which was quite mixed. You know a lot of mixed um yeah. Make a bunch of people um different ethnicities, different lengths of hair, like long hair, wasn't popular when I was starting off it was. It was mainly, you know, short back inside, so that was a really popular one um, So that, obviously you know the the longer hair came in later on for me um, but I started working with with hairdressers who went into men's hair, so I started learning to Become become more comfortable with long hair, not to not to feel long hair, you know it's like. It was always a terrifying thing if someone walked in the barbershop and they had long hair, my God, you'd look at each other like who can go to the toilet. Now, who can who needs to go to the shop now you know who could get out of doing the haircut? That'S all we used to do we used to figure out a way of getting out of doing the haircut. You know anyways now, I'd be the first one to jump at it. You know what I mean if that was the case um, but yeah a lot of the time it is you know it. It was a lot shorter. It was a lot of like I was. I was taught by a guy um who who also knew how to use a texture. Reader also knew how to take out a point cut and and all that sort of stuff. So you know I got taught a lot of the texturizing techniques that I'm teaching people now when I first started so, whereas that's not thinner, they're, not done technical being taught anymore, really, because the hairstyle's on on necessary for these type of finishes. You know what I mean: I'm not like around the world globally, most people, I still have a fight right or, if you're, having like gelled, hair and flip, like sort of slick back um. So obviously the day it has what time has changed a lot? Yes um. You were First Learning, but if someone wanted to pick up the barbering stuff now and learn about it now, how could they do that? How could they do that? Um? There'S lots of ways to do that nowadays, um what I'd say the best way to do it is do a lane lane from the from the bottom. You know start an apprenticeship um, that's what I would probably suggest would be the best thing to start with start an apprenticeship, yeah and then once you've got the basic understanding of being in a shop. Because don't forget it's not just about cutting hair. It'S about camaraderie! It'S about being able to talk to people it's about being able to advise people, consult with people yeah and deal with people. You know anyone who's, anyone watching if you're, not a barber, but you are in the customer service industry. It'S hard! It'S hard dealing with people. It'S expectations. It'S everything else right, so it is a hard it's a hard industry to be in. So you need to get used to that as well um. So that's what I'd suggested go and do an apprenticeship that'll be the best the best protocol and then once you've got your feet in the door of a shop and you're comfortable in the environment. Your surroundings, then, obviously you'll start learning from in that shop. But if you want it, if you want to learn quicker or you want to pick something up a bit quicker, do things like further education, you know go and maybe learn how to hold a pair of Clippers. First then how to hold a pair of scissors correctly. First then jump on board to you know you could do one of our courses. For example, you know learning the basics, it's like anything really. It'S like the foundations of a house. If you miss the foundations and you're building a house that collapses right, yeah same thing with with my job, if you don't learn the foundations, you learn one technique or you learn just a specific technique for a trend. You get the problems that you're giving me you get the problems of the car. You know people can't cut the top people, can't texturize people can't manage longer hair if you're just learning one thing yeah, you might be doing it really well, but then, as soon as the trend changes you're left behind. So if you learn the foundations of of cotton hair, as in like head shape, face shape how to line a hairline out, probably what you're looking for to create uh strengthen hairlines things like that when you learn all that everything else is adaptable. You know what I mean everything else you adapt to. What is it you do yourself, I'm boring, I'm an accountant, not boring mate, not this Sammy you're, not! I bet you're busy this time year right, oh yeah, it gets crazy, yeah, yeah, totally yeah yeah, so the other haircut I was potentially going to get was like a buzz cut, wow and also dyeing my hair wow, okay, okay, so a big change, yeah man um! It'S I'm still considering it hopefully uh it might do it next month or so nice. I mean start off like this now yeah for sure keep some length in the Chinese style. First before you go, it's like the extreme, but yeah yeah. You might convince me not to do that. Well, you might you might really like this haircut, you never know you know you. Might you might really really like it? This could be your go-to haircut for for a while from now on, you never know. Well, you might, you might still want to go down to that new surf, doing the doing the feed and what another day Jennifer's close and then going from there. I was toying with the idea of doing that to mine as well, if I'm honestly but um, there's a fair, no from the wife. So I was like okay, though, because she's a colorist, you see. Well, she was a colorist, so she could do my color. For me, but she's a no there's a no-go mate. Unfortunately, so you know me to do what I'm told. Obviously you know I just like to you know like to take someone else's advice, all right, yeah before I start getting ripped by the guys on the comments. Yeah, but you know I'd love to have done that I used to have color years ago. I used to get loads of color in my hair, but it was never. I'Ve never had like a buzz cut and then um, like sort of like bleach, all over kind of thing I used to get like highlights and stuff like that. You know yeah, thank God. Damn it was just aren't floating around anymore, like you know, I'm sure they've. All gone now, thank you, I think like right after I mean when we were talking in the consultation, my only my only sort of worries where they were like the style looking good because of how thick your hair is. Do I mean when I was saying about to scent like a mushroom? That'S why I was nervous because I don't know how it would fall. It'S not as you've got such thick hair and it's got the wave in it. It might not fall how you you definitely wanted to so that was my concern so yeah it was. It was more of a worry about the actual style working because of how thick your hair is more than because, like your hairline's, not strong enough or you know anything like that at all, so yeah you've got good hair mate very good. I think you just need to maybe I mean I'd probably say you might need to use a slightly more intense conditioner, um and maybe use it a bit more often to start with, just because it does feel quite dry. Um yeah, I mean if you only recently watched it as well. It'S not you know it still. It still feels a little bit dry, so maybe you need to invest in a slightly more air, more intense conditioner, I'd say right so take the top out now and then this is where we're going to start bringing in that connection as well to create that sort Of Jolly there kind of 90s Vibe, that's our video that air we kind of watched. So I want to see that down the middle. I don't want to cut it into the middle okay. I'M gon na start through the back so center part into what we call a t-section. So just above the crown I wipe this down here like that to either side like so I'm gon na find the length underneath there we go. Can you see that I cut that in we're going to bring everything to the back okay? This is what will create all that length. Come to the front once you dry, the hair off, I want to break it all up. Just working small sections left hand side to the right good, so we're getting gradually longer as we get to the front, make sure break it up. What does that mean break it up means where we've put a straight line in I'm gon na break up the straight line. I'M gon na make it a lot more choppy, so it just takes the heaviness out of the way so by breaking up what is essentially very thick hair sitting in a straight line. I want to make that look a lot more natural. Tell me: how did you find growing your hair um extremely difficult? Did you extremely difficult? It was, for example, from my sisters for 11 from my mum resentment from my dad um, especially it does right. It was going to family weddings and everyone's commenting. Oh, why don't you get it cut, really yeah, but then, after about a year and past the awkward stage, then I think it started to get its Merit as long as you're getting the love shown then yeah, then people were like. Oh, no, I'm kind of glad that you did it um, but yeah. All it takes is you know, just knocking off a bit of abuse and you'll get there yeah of course, yeah. Just just uh carry the building right, yeah yeah and I'm just gon na work. In horizontal sections now so we'll connect the back in a little bit more there and we're working over to this. We want to leave The Fringe graduate that longer, so I'm going to use the back as a guide and get more length through the front through all different communities. What we're going to do if I need to come down, probably to like, say the nose, I would say, that's a good length, I'd say about there, but I still falling nicely. I'M going to do now, of course, at a nice angle, to match up to the back I'll go with shorter through there. Well, that's just a little bit cleaner. Are you into gaming yourself, yeah yeah, unfortunately, for the last couple of years haven't been able to do as much but yeah I'm really looking forward to go to war fight. Oh right, yeah, yeah, yeah Ragnarok, I think is it wow that'd be awesome. Yeah I'd love to get back into me, but I just know I just I'd completely ruin everything that I have now I just sleep yeah I feel like I feel like I feel like I'm constantly doing something you know like every day. I don't know if anyone else feels that way, but I think since cover that just feels like much busier but yeah in general. You know so well how was covered for you then um covered for me on a sort of personal level. It was really hard like I struggled because I've never had that much time off in my life on a business level. Again, it was really hard because um, obviously I was closed down, so that was really tough yeah, but on the flip side it made our YouTube channel really popular, so it was kind of. It was a bit of a kind of pain for pleasure situation. I think, without covert we probably wouldn't have grown as quickly. We had a lot of videos that just went viral because of I don't know, because everyone was talking about their own hair yeah. Should we have a few videos go viral and then it got like we did. My mother did that interview? Didn'T we remember for a Yahoo or whatever it was in the states, did an interview on that and it just it just got really um it just got really popular. You know, so I think it just came from that really. So, on a whole, it was all right yeah. It was just obviously set in situations quite tough on a sort of personal level because trying to homeschool, which is really hard, yeah um. You know little things that was really tough um and do you have a goal set in mind? I think when the studio opens up properly, we've we've definitely got a goal. Then you know we've got a goal to become we want we want to. We want to get really enthusiastic and Barbers to come and share the specials and build and build a community that we've that's kind of what we've always wanted to do so I'd say: that's that's our goal. Now! That'S my goal anyway. My goal is to build up this space and get you know, load the creative people in here where I can bounce off and we can try and help further their careers as well - and you know that's kind of yeah I'd say that's my goal now. So that's the goal I've got now we work seven days, no, no three or four days now I did used to work. Seven days, though I used to where I used to work seven days. Every I mean I used to be the guy. Who did the Sundays? You know what I mean like: I was that guy um, but yeah. No, I yeah. I done all that mate. I think anyone who's who's now got a work-life balance is always all worked. The the the long days and we've all put the we've all grafted to get to it. You know what I mean: it's not like. It'S just handed to us. We never. We never grew up like you know where I grew up. It was it's not like a wealthy place at all. You know um, just a regular sort of working class suburb in Liverpool, so it wasn't like anything there wasn't like. We were fortunate or anything like that at all. You know. I was fortunate that I was. I was looked after well, but we never we weren't fortunate in terms of of of cash. You know so so working through the middle now, because it's a match right, that's what I'm gon na do now. I'M gon na blast it through I'm gon na put a little bit of a bit of scattering on it and I'm going to put a little bit of grooming cream in there. So the skeleton, because only because you've had long hair and your scalp could be quite sensitive and it could be a bit dry. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to spray a little bit of scallop tonic on there. I'M gon na dry that in a little bit it feels quite nice as well so yeah, it's quite cold, it's quite cold, yeah yeah so and then I'm going to put a little bit of grooming cream in to the hair itself, not that much all right there. We go now we'll do I'm going to dry the hair, because I need to cut into it. Okay, I need to really really point cut into this, so I'm going to blast the fruit, my fingers and then I'm going to start a section it off again putting foot into the ends. Well, what we'll do now is what we were talking about earlier on. It'S going to break you up now, thin It All Out To The Ends, fall a bit softer a bit more broken up foreign foreign. I like parties and stuff for, like the friends or the family and stuff like that and people just like not knowing who they were. You know what I mean because they're just saying that we're like a topic of an aircon coming into the engine now just to thin the hair out a lot so I'll, make it more manageable, a bit more make sure it matches up to the other side. A little bit there I'm going to do now is I'm going to copy what the guy did in the video all right nice. Let'S do it so I'm going to wet it down there we go now. What I'm going to use is I'm going to use a Pomade on this now the reason I'm going to use the Palm eggs. I want it to stay, looking wet, okay, it's a good way of getting it to look wet and stay. Looking like you apply the Pomade in wet hair and then this is an oil base for me, so it won't it. I you I've got this in my hair now and all I do is do a dry shampoo before I get in the shower, once you get in the shower, don't wet your hair, get your shampoo rub it through then do another shampoo and it comes up. Okay. Okay, but it's the best way of getting a good wet, look all right, so he's not that much okay, my hands! Now we do exactly like the video okay with the hair over push the sides back like that, lift it over again push the sides back and what you've done was you pull it all up the product in like so and then he just went and let it Fall forwards right, that's what I remember yeah! That was it that was it and then you end up with that. Johnny Depp I mean. Do you want on your face that much though, or do you want it to be a bit more off your face? Well now I can see a little bit better. I would probably do a little bit off your face if I was honest with you, man, I'll probably let just fall a bit more like yeah, like that. If I was you and that kind of fall just heavy and over the intentional unintentional falling off this yeah yeah, exactly yeah the intentional or intentional yeah there, you go. That'S how I'd probably do it more like that? Just because it's out your face, then I mean so. I would probably do a bit more like that. The death inspired the taper. Essentially that's I came over. Let me lift you up. Oh wow, I haven't seen this. You have it more on your face. If you want to Maple, I don't really think that's always we'll play around with it. For me, it's a little play around. Oh wow, it's essentially, I love it. If you've got the taper in there, you've got the you've got the the undercut in there. You'Ve got the same sort of longer Fringe, try to incorporate every single thing that you wanted, along with the same shape. So that's what you see on the back inside so you've got a weight in the heaviness in there and the length yeah, but it still Falls. It'S amazing to deeper looks great man. What a big change that I was not expecting that when you came in I was always I don't know what is it, but I love it. I love doing these costs, but it looks so good, especially when you've got the fade in there just add a little bit of something else, so it's nice that we kind of we tried to we. I think we incorporated it quite well. If I'm honest, I did. I didn't think it would work. I think I said that's either nine in it before when we had a little when we um when we had a bit of a break, it was just like. I wasn't expecting this to come out as well as it did. I really was the height of the undercut and and everything else that was going on, I was thinking. Is this gon na work, yeah hug, you right now, there's no social distancing. If you want foreign. Thank you mud. It looks great. It looks really good man yeah. I wasn't joking about that. That'S great man! This is my good man all right guys now have you ever thought of being your own boss? If you ever want to have like a work-life balance, you ever want to create content, build your own audience or join a platform where there's passion behind it and also passion for men's hair League of gentleman Studios is open for applications. Look at the link in the description to find out more

Ad Lad: Dan, don't think you know how much of an influence you have on people's lives. A haircut may just seem like a simple thing but you have no idea how good it feels to get exactly what you want. You're a legend, mate!

Boris: Great cut as usual! Shavez seems like a genuinely nice guy and a good client, asking Dan open-ended questions that brought out his passion for hairdressing. Of course, Dan's communication skills are second to none.

Adventure and More: OMG at last someone that actually understands that there is no substitute for years of proper training, Dan you have reiterated what I tell people that you cannot learn this trade in a week, well done mate for saying this online. And for the first time in 40 years of cutting hair a customer phoned and asked if I can cut hair, of course I said yes, however to my surprise he wasn’t being stupid it was that he had been to 9 barbers who turned him away as he had long hair and wanted a scissor cut, unbelievable!

Dave Card: A stunning haircut Dan, and a well deserved hug. ☺️ I cut my son’s hair on Saturday using a few of your techniques, I got a hug too.

willbe939: That haircut belongs in the haircut hall of fame! Fabulous work Dan!

Fratboy Fitness: You can tell how happy he is at the end

Mikey: This man is the best on YouTube. These videos will all age so well. Classics never go out of style.

Chris Amxy: Dan, that was an amazing style for this young man. You are definitely the master of what you do, and we're learning along side of you. Way to go!

mike adriano: Dan's power level is over 9000 It's on another tier! Great advice and cut as always. What a transformation

Erris Sevillano: I haven't had a barber explain exactly what I was thinking in my head. I'm not a barber, but I've always been pretty OCD with my haircuts. I've realized from jumping around that a lot of barbers just apply what they've learned to every head. Obviously, not all heads are the same. You are the first I've heard to explain that there is a lack of scissor work skill these days.

Kyliito: Another masterful job like always, Dan! This might be out of the blue, but could we potentially see a video of yourself getting your hair cut one day? Would be interesting to see how a true professional like yourself would like your hair to be cut, and how you're like on the other side of the chair

rosebankross: Excellent haircut Dan, as usual. Lovely to see how happy the guy was with the result. Thought he had quite nice year to start with too. I do envy guys with straight hair.

M. S.: After watching a few of these, I am convinced I can give my husband Dan's current style. I have a KM10 and clippers. Who cuts Dan's hair and would you mind sharing the blade/clipper length? My husband agreed to let me clean him up! Great videos!

Stig Cannavaro: Great job, Dan, as always.

Steve Scheide: When I was in school I wasn't taught point cutting but I was watching Dan's videos. I started point cutting on clients on the shop floor and my teacher actually stopped by and said "where'd you learn that?" and I had to say YT. It was frustrating to be in school, paying a lot of money, to then be getting a real education from Dan and others like him on YT. Now that I'm a professional barber, I understand that there will always be something new to learn. Dan's videos are a true blessing to come back and watch again and again, picking up new techniques and skills. Thank you to Dan and everyone at RG to helps makes this content.

barry maple: Agree you can't learn everything in weeks or months but its a start for many in a new direction ( I have) and gotta say one of the best things I've ever done. Giou Eem: I wanna become a villain and take revenge on all the barbers in the world because they allways cut too much and messed my hair up. When i do that you will be the only barber i spare because you allways cut as much as the client wants and you make sure you don't cut to much by asking them again and again.

Hera & Hyde: Barber turned him into Johnny! I told you magic real!

Ty: Commented on another video of yours saying the cut wasn't great and since this one is actually really good I felt I should leave a positive comment as well

Mary Elizabeth: How many old heads paused when he referred to Johnny Depp's haircut from back in the day, "an old school classic" damn I'm old.

Octazooka: Goated barber! Maybe one day i will come here

Piero Del: what clipper are you using in the video @Regal ?

Hamster boy Khabib: Well done. Lost weight. Proud of you
