Welcome to the life of hair, my name is James Atkinson. Thank you for joining me in this episode. These videos had been highly requested recently, and this is on curly hair. Now someone reached out to me a few weeks ago and said James I'd love to see you cut a shag on curly hair texture. Now this is really curly, my sort of curl. In fact note this isn't my sister someone said that to me, while I was cutting her hair, we're not related in any way, but it is a wicked haircut on curly hair. I absolutely love it love it love it. It'S something I offer to curly hair clients as a super alternative to having the limited options that sometimes people believe that curly hair provides. I think curly hair can be boundless, providing you're willing to embrace the texture, and in this particular instance, it looks really really retro. In the final styling, I made it really quite curly, but you can soften it out and have a kind of looser wavier texture to this particular look as well. It'S really really versatile and I think in 2020 you're going to be seen more and more people requesting shag haircuts. So it is one of those haircuts that is well worth. Investing that time, effort and energy into becoming really proficient out on the shop floor so check this video out. I'Ve got three. No I've got two other videos on the shag and it is one of those haircuts that is versatile for any length of hair as well. So enjoy this subscribe, if you haven't already smash that like button, it really really helps the videos get out there so that other people can enjoy them too, and I'll see you again next week for another episode of the life of half the first thing that we Need to do is split the hair down the center, then we're going to separate the front from the back from the highest point of the head to the back of the ear. The highest point of the head is very important when separating the hair into two anything below the highest point will give you too much hair in the front and anything behind the highest point will give you too much hair in the back. So be sure that you are going from the highest point if you're not sure place your comb flat onto the head when the head is in neutral position and where your comb touches down. That is the high point once you've done that take a small triangular section from the front hairline. This will be your overall guide for the entire haircut and it will be ultimately how long the fringe will be so be assured. When you're cutting curly hair, you cut it to allow for the curly hair to shrink once you've done that take a one centimeter wide section that encompasses that front triangle. It is very important because this will be your guide section, making sure the head is in a neutral position, elevate, the hair straight up and cut a 45 degree line, make sure the hair is coming out from the head 90 degrees and you are not over directing It left or right as this will affect the overall balance of the haircut once you've cut that line split it into two. This will give you two even guidelines, one on the left and one on the right. We'Re going to start on the right hand, side, because I am a right-hander, I'm going to push the hair into the center. This over direction will ensure that we get a even balance in our shape and we do not lose the length from the front hairline using the guide that you cut in the middle cut a 45-degree line with the over direction to the center. This third section will then also be over directed to the center line, and each subsequent section after this will be over directed to exactly the same place, a very, very easy and simple technique. If you think about it, comb the hair out at 45 degree angle and making sure that you're following your guideline got a nice clean line that travels towards the ceiling. You will note, as I come further down the head sections get larger because the hair gets dinner. We want to ensure that we have enough hair to cut and the density of our sections are not wispy over directing this final section to that center line. You will not have a lot of hair to cut off if the hair is a round shoulder length. If it is longer, however, you will probably have more hair to cut off. We are going to repeat this exact process on this left hand, side now we're making sure that we are over directing to that center line. Each time you will note my body position has not moved from the right hand side of my clients ahead. This is because I am right-handed and cutting up is always easier than cutting down. You will see that each section is still over directed to that center line, making sure that we protect all the weight on the exterior of the haircut, and this will also mean that we get a nice balanced shape at the end, always check for balance and length. Symmetry once you have finished your sections and cross-check, where necessary, once you've done this, take a 1 centimetre guide from those front sections that you have just cut and pound them into the back. This will give you a clearer vision of where you are going next. Take a 1 centimetre section down the center back, and the guide line that you just came out from the top section at the front will be clearly visible. Follow this section all the way down the center back, to ensure that you have got a great guide to start back section with, just like you did in the front separate that section into to down the center back and then do exactly as you did before. Taking a horizontal line over directing it into the middle, making sure you've got all your hair gathered nicely at the root as well and pushing it into the center. This over direction is super important as it's exactly like. It was in the front on this left-hand side. We'Re going to do exactly the same, we are going to remain on the right-hand side for right, handers and the left-hand side for left handers, and we are going to pull the hair towards us. This is ensuring that our symmetry and balance of this shape is even throughout, and if you need to use the mirror to check or physically walk around to make sure you've got the hair exactly where you want it. You must do that. There is no shame in checking check twice cut once and here we have the finished result, an absolute beauty in my book. One of my absolute favorite looks of the moment. It is so vintage. Yet contemporary. This haircut has gone madly out of fashion, but is coming back with a vengeance, and it's a haircut like I said in the intro that is really really important to have in your arsenal. I hope you've enjoyed this video and you've taken something from it. Never be afraid of curly hair, guys big piece of advice, always Club cut curly hair. In my opinion it doesn't need texturizing, you just create wispy texture, don't forget if you enjoyed this, then smash that subscribe button. If you haven't already bashed up thumbs up button, it really helps me with the videos getting them out there to the worldwide web, so everybody else can enjoy them too, and I will see you again next week for another episode and life of hair

Bianca Senisi: Very clear instructions, thanks so much! I just cut my own hair at home using your technique and I LOVE IT! I have tighter thicker curls than the model but the method still worked a treat. It's a universally flattering cut from wavy to curly heads, and not that complicated once you grasp what's being done. Thanks for making it easy and fun! :)

kiki atmosfär: Im a totally new hairdresser student and happy to find someone who just explains what to do and not all kinds of useless jokes and comments. Clear and easy to follow. The british accent helps as well ;) Thank you, you have a new apprentice!

Keziah D: This tutorial is wonderful. Managed to do it at home alone (took 1.5 hr and my arms are tired from pulling my hair straight up above my head) but it's the best haircut I've had and it's all thanks to your wonderful technique and explanation. Thank you so much!!!

agata: this is exactly what I want!! I'm going to show this to my hairdresser

Ella Levi: This, this is it, this is the one tutorial that finally gave me the curly cut I wanted. I did it myself and it took me about an hour but it was 100% worth it. Thank you!

Guadalupe Flores: I’m so glad I found this video, I just did this cut to my 19 year old daughter and it turn out amazing! We both have curly hair, I get it from both my parents and my daughter from me.

Sam: Fiz esse corte no meu cabelo ondulado/cacheado. Ficou maravilhoso, um volume lindo! obrigada, eu mesma consegui fazer em mim

Jacqui Byrne: Hi James love the curly shag, the shag is one of my fav' hair cuts. On another note did a root bleach today used your technique from a week or two ago. Can out even better than normal. So thanks a lot. Jacqui x

Joe Ramirez: I'm a barber I've grown my mullet for 8 months now and I'm at the point where I wanna do a mullet/shag cut on a woman! You're videos have helped a lot some practice on a mannequin and I should be good to go!

Melissa Culpepper: This is perfect for my hair texture! Yay! Curly-hair making a comeback!!! Thank you

Cassidy: I did this on myself and it turned out beautifully. Thank you!

zaker721: Thank you so much! All we ever see are people cutting straight hair or making the hair look straight. Now unless you really have straight hair maintaining that is labor intensive unless you are good with hair (I'm certainly not). More Youtube videos with curly or wavy hair would be appreciated. It's a sad thing when only one type of girl from a very specific set of ancestries gets to be pretty or feel confident getting her hair cut since she is the only type anyone learns to work on and the only one we see in videos.

Neetta Vaidhya: Thank you always love your easy way of teaching. X

Samantha Quintana: I just got this haircut today with a red brown base and fiery copper highlights. I have a round face and I didn't think it would look good but my hairdresser talked me into it. What the hell. It's just hair! I love it!!!! It's low maintenance, cute, edgy, and perfectly unfussy. This cut fits all face shapes.

꧁Southerngal꧂: ❤❤ this haircut. I've always had stick straight hair then started perming until a few yrs ago after my mom passed away. I find now my hair is thinning really bad. She passed at 93 and had a head full of hair. Wish I could get a perm and this cut. Ty for sharing this.

sandraenglandful: Best video ever! I’m a hairdresser and this is amazing

Alysia Burns: Love it! I had this hairstyle in the early 80s! I have naturally curly hair but have been straightening it and I'd love to go back to this easy care style and embrace my curls again. Problem is I can't find anyone locally who will do this. They all want to add a lot of texturizing which doesn't work well for my hair. Would it be rude to show this video to a hair designer?

Diane Thompson: Looks beautiful on her! I think it compliments most face shapes!!

paul Davies: Superb love it James ! Definitely going to give this a go thank you as always

Toni,s hair styles: Beautiful love it thanks James ❤️

leila hs: Dude i have to thank u i have abso no training in hair but i followed along to ur video and i think it turned out so nicely, i was really freaked out bc i did just the top layer at the back and left it there but ive just cut the rest of the layers and it looks SICK! Thank uuuu!!!!!

evelyn home: Hi James do to this virus I’m teaching myself to cut hair ....i have twin girls thank you for making this video so simple

TheFarkhondeh: Thank you so much for the shag haircut, I am so happy that it was done on a live model. Thank you

Sarah Lemillour: Very beautiful haircut !

Eleanor Chan: Blast, I'm seeing this video after following another of your videos on the shag cut. I still got a good result though but it was tricky figuring out some parts. This is easier to follow. I'll follow this one next time!

KittyCatChey: I’m in school for hairstyling but watching this solely for my mom since she has worn a 70s shag forever

ami tav: Hello. Loved the video and the end result! When it comes down to it, would you find this tutorial hard to really follow for an amateur, someone with curly hair locked indoors currently?

urszula trypuc: Thank you James. You demonstrate in the most understanding way. Is a pleasure to lern.

Kimmie B: Exactly like my hair in high school back in the ‘70s. Unfortunately everyone else had long, straight and middle-parted hair. I was teased unmercifully.

Lilmisscostumedrama: I love how he gets scientific with it!! I love this channel!

HAIR POLICE: I would like to have the same hairstyle! Good job!

April Hoskey: Such a fun easy cut. Thanks for sharing.

Joann Vandiver: For the past 20 years I've been asking for a shag hair cut. people look at me like they don't understand I may have to try this on myself. One thing about my hair is you really can't mess it up. I have curly thick wild hair thanks for sharing this video.

Maria Von Borstel: Love it

sura xx: cant wait to try this one as well! this tech vs the Shag / Mullet Haircut Vidal Sassoon - Long Graduation - video. my client has curly hair and i would like the shape of the other video. I felt like i would just do the Shag / Mullet Haircut Vidal Sassoon - Long Graduation - but then i saw this. and am curios if would i vary anything since she has curly hair?

Shenia: I love it! ♥️

Vickie L: I like this, but longer. Below my collar bone. Almost to my bra strap. I can't go short like that yet! I'm 58 and have past bra strap length curly/wavy hair.

Julie Peck: OK I have a question . My teacher is telling me not to hold my fingers like I do when cutting. The only reason I’m bringing this up to you is because I noticed you hold your finger the exact same way I do. With one slightly tucked under the other I guess not exactly even is what she could call it. So I’m just curious is that wrong to do or not?

Sharon Alley: Does this change at all/much with a side part? I imagine for the front you would overdirect to the part, maybe? But I'm not sure how to continue that into the back...

Ashley: yess i have this haircut and i love my hair so much my fav way to wear my curls

luigina bustillos: Thank you very much for your video, I'm a bit confused about the difference between shagg or wolf haircut. Could you give me a hand with it ?

ima jenn: Beautiful. I want this. In you last from the front you say "if your hair is longer you may have more hair to cut" what do you do it your hair is shorter and there is no hair to trim? (I have to diy since covid)

Brittney Garcia: Woooow her hair looks gorgeous

Chris Heang: Great and easy technic, can I do it for straight hair? Thanks

Odalys Ruiz: You are awesome! This is great! Thank you! ✌

Nasrin Davallou: Thank you for the great video, one question, if she wants the length shorter do i cut the the length first?, i know it sounds too obvious.‍♀️

Rain Wannasiri: Love the cut!!!!

Lewnidas Orfanos: Great video and haircut enjoying every minute

Sandrea White: Love it.

CARLO VÁSQUEZ: Fabulous . Vidal would loved it as well. Thank you .

Dini Kurniasari: Amazing..sweet modele..love you tutorial..very very simple but amazing result

Dante Velasquez: Excellent :-)

Heather G: Cool James...I had it cut like this with a perm in the 70s, but a bit wilder aka no diffuser.

Gail DeLa: I would love to see a side bang or comb straight back. I love the cut but not the full bangs. Thanks

facetofacelikemoses !: Hello. How is a shag different from a basic layered cut be it medium short or long?

ima jenn: Georgeous. I have to DIY due to covid + immune deficiency. I plan to see a stylist at some point for a Pro Job. I mostly have done this but my length is jaw length, so it doesn't reach top for over direction. How do I get the layers right for sides? I think I need a second guide point? Being short the back is tough. I have a bit of a weight bump @ the ends. Suggestions? I have most of the shape but need to refresh/fix scragglers.

Shel Ma: Hi James, is this a 75 degree haircut technique, inverted layers I think? Thanks, lovely cut.

Nawras Taha: Lovvvvve ur teaching. Sooo clear and great

Leon Yeshua: I fucking love all your videos man! Thank you so much !! Please don’t stop !!

Noshi Naqvi: Wao, love this cut

Arthur Gaboyan: Thank you thumbs up for sure.

Hina Malik: Good precise cut

Αλεξία Γιώργη: Το me a shag is ideal for curly hair. I want this haircut for myself but I have really straight hair. Is it going to work?

mironas xatz: nice one mate

HARLEYQUINN: She looks so cute and edgy!!

Sanna Selander: I'm about to do this to myself right now at 2am hehe

Alicia B: Is this kind of like cutting side bangs? Just... on a larger scale?

Maryam: That was beautiful hair cut , just camera was keep moving forward and back fast , gave us a headache.

Laura Kane: I hated my mother for a week after she gave me this hairstyle when I was 12. I cut it myself a few weeks later into a regular shag with fringe. Aren't things bad enough? If we're going to bring something back from the past can we make it the music instead?

Fabio Osorio: Brilliant.

HARDI PUTRA KALIMANTAN: Haircut indonesia present, goods brother

Moonscape19: Hi James! Just a random comment here. Look up the actor Luke Cook. I see a strong resemblance in you two. :)

Andy Mejia: What if I have really curly and tangled hair?

Bhavesh Valand: Nice

Fwrdan Daimary: Lovely

alicia flores rojas: Se ve muy bonita la niña

Kitty Noneya: Thanks for sharing

Debbie George: Omgbi almost got b this cut I'm so glad I saw this cause honestly I don't like it at all.

Natasha Manolagas: She is so cute!

So: I’m wondering if I could do it for myself or do I need someone to cut it for me ? I have no one right now to do that

alteredcatscyprus: Your eyebrows are fabulous.

Janice Foundas: If you find someone who even know how to cut hair please let me know!

jbean530: Farrah Fawcett hair is coming back, too.

linz: i want this yes

Parvin Masoudi:

Oooo oooO: the mica argañaraz print

Lady Cat: 1:43

Jessica P: .

K Conrad: Um...that’s not a shag LOL. That’s a layered bob. A true 70’s shag is like a lady mullet. Its like David Cassidy’s hair. Barry Manilow. It’s Carol Brady’s hair from The Brady Bunch. Nice try though.
